You are so funny...but all your points are spot on. I live in Canada, and I hate winter....2 weeks of it is enough for me, especially as one gets older. As you said, the snow turns to dirty slush when temperature rises, and everywhere is wet, dirty and slushy. Not good in COVID19 times. Plus it is BONE CHILLING cold in winter! And 6 to 7 months of it! Anyway, like your content and particularly your bubbly nature. Subscribed to your channel 1-2 years ago, but you disappeared right after! As an expat myself living in Singapore for 5+ years, I slowly started to feel insecure as the job priority is shifting to locals day by day and not getting PR as well. Hmmm, i'm not so sure about the friendly part, i know they are not angry most of the time that's for sure 😛 but customer service wise, we're kind of terrible but i think it's cos of our culture to generally not speak up most of the time. Many years ago (i don't think they do that now) some shop assistance or the shopkeeper actually follow you around, even in a shop space of 5m x 5m size 🤣 and you keep having to tell them you'll look around yourself. I actually feel that Singapore is still not safe enough, so i'm glad we're having 200, 000 cameras soon 🤣

Yes, agree. Singaporeans have a lot of improvement when it comes to the "softer" stuff like public speaking, voicing opinions, getting out of their comfort zone, being unafraid of failure etc, and speech and drama is a good instrument or medium to promote these. I noticed Western countries (thinking about America primarily, because they talk so much!) seem to place more emphasis on speaking and oral culture. There's the obvious differences like being encouraged to speak up more in the classroom (culminating in the emphasis on case discussion in business schools), but also on debate and expression of opinions both in the media (free speech lol!) and in daily life. However, the drawback of placing such emphasis on these is that less-well-thought out opinions can hold sway simply by virtue of being the loudest, and also sometimes verbal fluff can be encouraged over substance. Whereas in Asian cultures it is the opposite. The emphasis is placed on listening and absorbing the wisdom of teachers and authorities (political, familial etc), and also on maintaining harmony. The drawback is that people tend to not voice out concerns and sweep things under the rug, and that is where learning to voice opinions tactfully, not being afraid to come out of the comfort zone etc has value. Whew! This comment turned into an essay.

So, you're originally from South Africa? Ok, I'm curious. Clearly, you are Caucasian but of which decent, exactly? I have a friend from S. Africa & he ever spoke in Afrikaans. And it sounded pretty Dutch-esque to me but here's the thing: his lineage goes way back to England! Pardon me since before you & him, the only South African that Singaporeans know well is Wendy Jacobs, wife of Singaporean soccer legend Fandi Ahmad. Her heritage is anyone's guess but she's living proof that S. Africa is a melting-pot of cultures, contrary to what History otherwise strongly suggests. I'm guessing... you are of English decent?
@intheworldofmari
@intheworldofmari 2 жыл бұрын
South Africa is indeed a melting pot of cultures and we known as 'The Rainbow Nation' To understand our history one will need a whole lesson on it as it is so complex... But to answer your question in short - I am a mix of European descents - French, Scottish, Dutch etc. and some Bangladesh as well actually.
@Z4U3398
@Z4U3398 2 жыл бұрын
@@intheworldofmari 'Rainbow Nation' - an apt monicker... ;^) Considering just how diverse your heritage is, thanks for sharing! Honestly? I can relate to that. People have asked me, "Big guy, what are you? Malay or Chinese?" Me? Javanese. Arab. Pakistani. Dutch. Sumatran. Indonesian Chinese. And God knows what else. And in true blue Singaporean style their response was: "Wah. So complicated. Nevermind. You are Malay, ok?" Lol! 🤣 The conundrum of the eclectic heritage individuals: most people of homogenous ethnicity just can't relate... 💁🏻‍♂️
