The way I see it: all India has a “colonial hangover” even now. All my Indian friends live and work in America, travel to India every year or more, happy with their lives and the whole setup. They do not much care about political matters, what happens to the poor in India, they are not particularly patriotic, and those with high incomes are amazingly stingy. (Of course, there are exceptions, but they are marginal).

India could have been entangled actively in the bloc politics of the Cold War, and could have become more vulnerable to bullies from both camps. Though we faced a Chinese attack in 1962, we always favoured them not only for mere historical relations, but for strategic interests. We wanted a good neighbour in Asia, since Pakistan was hostile towards us from 1947 itself. And Nehru was not at all naive about Chinese intentions. When strains began to develop in Sino-Indian relations, he kept himself in regular touch with intelligences of both superpowers in regard to China.
