In the second game, Nodirbek was in a difficult position and Kramnik was close to winning. However, Nodirbek stopped the clock and called the arbiter, claiming a three-fold repetition. Kramnik was confused, but the arbiter checked the previous moves and confirmed the repetition, resulting in a draw. This demonstrated Nodirbek's brilliant presence of mind as a young player from Uzbekistan.

This is ludicrous. It should be straightforward for computer to figure out whether the position is repeated 3 times and automatically stop the game. Why is there a need for human intervention?!

The game is not automatically drawn if a position occurs for the third time - one of the players, on their turn, must claim the draw with the arbiter. The claim must be made either before making the move which will produce the third repetition, or after the opponent has made a move producing a third repetition. By contrast, the fivefold repetition rule requires the arbiter to intervene and declare the game drawn if the same position occurs five times, needing no claim by the players. -from the internet. i did not know about the five fold repetition.

In an armageddon game, with precious little time on the clock, deliberately stalling with an unjustified arbiter call would be advantageous. Is there a penalty if the claim turns out to be wrong?

can someone explain why it's a repetition when the last 3 moves weren't same squares
@stagna1959
@stagna1959 Жыл бұрын
It does not have to be last 3 moves. Same position means all pieces are on same squares and same player has to move.Player can dance around with bishop and queen and after 10 moves to arrive into exact same position he had before In OTB it is sometimes hard to determine, but with modern DGT tehnology you can check computer . Without DGT pieces and board and when players are not writing their moves on scoresheet, it is sometimes impossible even for arbiter to make sure whether it was 3-fold repetition or not.
@lutimstrickshots9253
@lutimstrickshots9253 Жыл бұрын
@@stagna1959 Yeah, that happened to me in Rapid. We don't write scoresheets and the board isn't DGT either. I was playing with an IM and the position definitely repeated thrice but for some reason he said that it doesn't. I had no proof sadly and the game continued. But luckily, the position was already drawn and I drew the IM!

Why didnt he play Qd7 ? 2:09 1. Qd7 Be5 2. c7 Bxc7 3. Qxc7 and it is time to resign Even club player can convert passer and extra knight now , black has no counterplay whatsoever I have no other explanation that Kramnik was very rusty, did not play OTB games for a long time and just panicked in time pressure But this was fairly common endgame, what a shame he let it slide to draw

@stagna1959
@stagna1959 Жыл бұрын
@@ioan.cristian200 Kramnik had 11 seconds on clock+ increment when black played Bd4. And Qc7 did not help him at all , it blocked c-passer. Qd7 would make possible to push passer and black had to sac his bishop to take it. In his heyday he would see it in 1 second. Ex-champ was very rusty here. You have to practise tournament chess constantly to stay sharp.

@@stagna1959 fair enough, but you have to understand that it's not just the situation of the exact position, you need to consider the whole game and the pressure that would have been in the players, do you honestly think you would have been able to spot that move if it didn't automatically hit your brain with 11 seconds, with 11 seconds you can barely calculate, and somehow he missed it, but for a former world champion I agree that's its a bit surprising

@@aryannegi3670 It is not black turn after ...Bd4 .White to move ! Time stamp was 2:09 There is no check and only white queen can play Qd7.Kramnik even hesitated couple of seconds and then played useless Qc7. 20 years ago he would not hesitate at all in same position having same time on clock.
