The ''A > B > C'' logic doesn't apply here. Rather, the ''rock, paper, scissors'' one does. Most characters are strong against some, but weak against others. Anakin lost to Dooku because the latter's Makashi was weak against the former's Djem So. Anakin lost to Obi-Wan because he couldn't penetrate his Soresu defense wall. Obi-Wan lost to Dooku because he was simply an inferior duelist and Force user. Just because Obi-Wan was able to defeat Anakin doesn't mean that he'd be able to defeat anyone whom Anakin could. That's not how this works.

Exactly. Its all about match ups. Soresu was pure defense and vulnerable to a master Makashi, yet Soresu was the perfect counter against Grievous 3893 lightsabers, and also against Windu's Vapaad--its stated Windu would often tie with Obi Wan because Obi's style was too passive and did not feed into Vapaad.

A thing i want to add to further add to your explanation is that Anakin was too agressive and Dooku really didint had any time to use any force powers, otherwise he would pretty much die. All the time he had to use it, he choose to use the force on Obi-Wan, because he was the biggest threat. Sure, Anakin won and was stronger, buuuuut Dooku didint tought he would have won, since the last time he fought both, was Obi-Wan who held for longer, so... Also, there is precedence for *SITH* being able to crush the force shield of someone stronger than him. See Bane against the battlemaster at the Sith Academy... Rank doesnt always have something to do with it. Especially if the force user is caught off guard. See Palpatine's fight against Yoda. They both were strong enough to pass each other's force shields... But all the time they did that, they both were caught off guard. And that's what happened. Obi-Wan was caught off guard, and Anakin didint let Dooku get enough room to get funny.

In the official book "Revenge of the Sith" it says that Palatine told Dooku to go easy on Anakin because he wanted to turn him against the Jedi. This is why he easily dispatched Obi Wan yet never used his powers against Anakin. Dooku was able to hold his own against Yoda the most powerful of the Jedi in a duel as we saw and was ranked THIRD most powerful Jedi force user under Yoda and Mace Windu. Thats the official story.

You nailed this. Your explanation is at the very least what I feel was happening in this scene. Dooku was immensely powerful but old compared to Kenobi. Similar to how Anakin's form V had too much momentum for Dooku, Obi-wan without Sidious would do the opposite. His form III would halt all momentum and lead to odd stand offs. Life in the first fight, where multiple times in the Clone Wars they end up pausing completely. The younger Kenobi kept re-engaging. This older more masterful kenobi without Anakin present would allow those moments to continue and force Dooku to take the imitative every time. I feel like the two could have a near never end duel by the time we reached Revenge of the Sith, with very little damage being done on either side. I do feel that Sidious was doing nothing more than making the room a Dark Side Force Nexus/Vengeance. He was blotting out the light side like the eclipse blots out the sun. He didn't weaken Kenobi's shield there was no shield. Even Anakin receives a fairly forceful force kick and is knocked rather hard. He just doesn't have the ceiling caved in on him by Dooku. Also without the light available to Dooku to draw on he was weak. I don't think he was fully committed to the dark only to his ideals. Like a reverse Jedi he was a slave to the separatists. He had become what he mocked the Jedi for being. Without the lightside he was no match for Anakin's dark side. His pain far out weighted any grief Dooku had ever felt and he was not ready for the full force of Anakin's wrath when his ability to use the light to center himself was peeled away. Also the reason the for no relationships was it led to what Anakin did, hold of his anxiety and than feel free to release it on an enemy as "evil" as Dooku. It was "okay" because it needed to be done to win. Yoda was very ... stubborn or determined to never let students slip to the dark side ever. Not realizing that if he trained and mentored even the most grey Jedi and just bent a little he could have prevent much of this mess. Anakin was groomed by the temple to be a weapon by not recognizing and normalizing his pain. Dooku didn't have that kind of pain to fuel him, he had peace and intellect, and truly was being evil to effect change not to be blatantly evil. Anakin clearly was capable, willing, and ready to be evil. With the light side and the dark Dooku could have held off Kenobi and Anakin to a stalemate but with only the dark only Anakin. Only Anakin was in charge in that room other than Sidious. You are so right that he knew Dooku was more balance and possible stronger than Anakin but he was old. He wanted to make a combination of himself and a Sith assassin all in one and he found it in Anakin.

It was stated in the novel that Obi-Won had trouble connecting to the force while on the ship has if something was casting a shadow over it. This was being caused by Sidious. After they were captured by Grievous (who was not in on the whole Palpatine being Sith thing), Palpatine dropped this damping effect allowing Obi-Won to fully feel the force again so they could escape. The novel also pointed out that Dooku was about to be overwhelmed Jedi and managed to fling Obi Won in an act of pure desperation.

Antaqua R Yea... He told Obi-Wan the truth about Palpatine* (Edited that) because he knew that he wouldnt belive or was just going to join him. That's what he wanted. Turn Obi-Wan to the Dark Side. Second, he brought the captured jedi back to the arena and tried to make them surender, because Palpatine needed a war to gain absolute power and kill the Jedi Order from bottom to top. If all the 200 Jedi (including Anakin) were to be killed there, then the Jedi Order would have been so crippled, that they would have lost the war right then and there. And the whole point of the war was to kill all the jedi at once. If the jedi felt like losing the war, or if it didint lasted longer, they would either sneak out some masters and padawans or never really trusted the clones enough so that they could be wiped out at once. Also, Even if Count Dooku managed to kill all the council members and even Yoda, a premature lost of that war would rob him of killing the entire jedi order, so he needed the Jedi crippled, but not dead. And if you pay attention, Count Dooku was counting the jedi numbers all the way through... It was a calculated decision based on orders, not a civilized notion of honor. You just need to see what he did to his master and all those inocents on the Clone Wars. He was just a fancy Sith Politician.

AgoodSAMaritan Obi-Wan would have to run or he would lose if Anakin didn't get cocky there. The reason he chose to jump from that exact point was that Obi-Wan told him not to try it. Anakin took it as if Obi-Wan indicated Anakin was not powerful enough to make the jump which pissed him off so he tried and threw the duel. But in fact, Anakin was already quite far stronger than Obi-Wan at that point. He was younger and faster and the knowledge of the dark side was giving him powers that Obi-Wan couldn't use.

Pechna ¨ That's kind of why it was lame. Anakin was really powerful and should have easily made that jump over Obi Wan. Look at the jump Obi Wan made in Episode One where he jumped up to that platform while they were fighting Darth Maul. Just seemed strange that Anakin didn't make it far enough over him to stay out of reach of the lightsaber. Seems like he would have anticipated Obi Wan slashing at him while he was flipping over him. I still love the movie and the scene that follows is my favorite part of the movie, where Obi Wan is upset and telling Anakin he was the chosen one and all that.

Easily your best video. A lot of people overlook the subtle details in this final fight between Anakin & Kenobi vs Dooku. Right before something happens to him, it cuts to Palpatine performing gestures of sorts to disrupt Kebobi's force wall. Dooku couldn't penetrate his defenses and the battle was really about Anakin vs Dooku... Palpatine didn't want Kenobi interfering with his business again, so they made sure he was knocked out of the fight asap. For those who question his force wall, hard work beats talent when talent never works hard. One's dedication to the force is what strengthens them even more... That's Why he matched Anakin in a force push standoff. Obi-Wan is strong in the force, he was extremely dedicated, that's what it is really about, strengthening your own connection to the force itself.

I'm sure this video is going to go into way more datail than I can, but here are my possible reasons: A. Anakin got cocky against Obi Wan B. Anakin beat Dooku in part thanks to Obi-wan tiring him out C. Different styles are more effective against some styles than others, i.e. charmander beats bulbasaur beats squirtle type deal.

It's the same way Vader being in the suit forced him to become more powerful in his strength of the force, since he no longer had the speed, and daring lightsaber maneuvers he'd had before the suit. This is so wrong. Dooku was far more experienced and a little more powerful than both. Sidious didn't need to interfere, those were obviously just silly grunts of faked expression for the good guys. As you see he was able to force push both anakin and obi wan. In the end it was Anakin's use of the dark side and his anger that let him win, as he has the potential to be the more powerful, yet is still young. Also, Obi Wan's experience and anakin's cockiness are what caused the outcome of their duel.

I actually really like this theory, makes everything much clearer as to why Obi-Wan beats Anakin when he is much more powerful (That along with the Obi Wan having a deeper connection to the force during that final battle and working as a part of it) along with how Palpy making Anakin stronger while fighting Duku leading to his reaction at being betrayed at 04:08 and 04:10

Sidious had no plans to train Anakin until it was brought to his attention when Qui-Gon found him and brought him before the Jedi Council. Maul was meant to kill the Jedi one by one and was Sidious' true apprentice, but when he lost in hubris to Kenobi, Sidious sought a replacement and Anakin was perfect.

War Machine After the rule of two came out, if you were not sith, you did not get the title Darth. It was different than the Jedi handing out the title Master all over the place, it meant something. He was a Sith, but you are right, he was very likely expendable, but he was still a Sith. True Sith died out thousands of years before the movies events. True Sith were a species, and they gone. Both from the galaxy of star wars and star wars canon. Since all that is just legends now. But in current canon, Darth Tyrannus/ Count Dooku, was a Sith lord.

I always wondered why the camera was focusing on Palpatine during the duel when he was strapped to the chair, but I failed to notice that it solely focused on him only when Dooku was about to attack Obi-Wan with a Force ability as well as after Obi-Wan was knocked unconscious when he shifted his gaze from Obi-Wan back to Dooku and Anakin. Another thing I noticed was that when Sidious shifted his gaze back to Dooku and Anakin his face muscles relaxed, whereas when the camera focused on him beforehand his face was tensed up in concentration. This implies that his manipulation of the duel was only in regards to Obi-Wan and him shouting "Get" was a signal to Dooku saying "Get him! His shield's down!"

Dooku is much more powerful than Obi wan in the force, and the makashi is well suited for fighting Soresu, in fact Dooku was one of the few who could be a real threat to Obi Wan, and i absolutely disagree with this way of guessing power levels, like 1 beats 2 and 3 beats 1 so 3 beats 2 ... this isnt taking in account the specialisation and affinities of characters toward each other fighting style, Obi wan shield of force was broken many times by lesser users of the force than Dooku, Darth maul did it Assaj too during the clone wars and it is stated clearly than one of Soresu problems is its weakness to force based attacks, because the user focuses too much on the defensive techniques with his lightsaber, i think rather that Sidious asked Dooku to lure anakin to the dark side and not fight him at 100% because in the clone wars serie Dooku bested anakin many many times, he didnt even use force lightning on him in this duel, which is a proof that the mission assigned to dooku wasnt to kill Anakin, but gain him as a pawn for future plans (like they did for assaj or savage opress) ! and the surprise in the face of Dooku in the end isnt because he was not excpecting Palpatine to execute him for failure (this is the sith ways after all) but his understanding that luring Anakin to the dark side during the duel while not fighting him at 100% was the way that planned palpatine to kill him ...

I think this is one of few times it actually comes down to style. Soresu is great for wearing down aggressive fighters, but because Makashi isnt an aggressive style, Obi-wan was forced to a bit more aggressive himself, which I feel he is a little less adept at.

Windu and Dooku fought to stalemates, he never beat Windu, the same with Yoda. However, Windu never used his form to its fullest when dueling since it required him to turn dark to use it, and that wasn't something he did unless it was required, and a normal duel with friends wouldn't require that. Also, Windu could also use the opponent's dark emotions against them and would empower him, which is how he beat Palpatine. People give Dooku too much credit. Qui Gon also fought Dooku to a stand-still.

There is actually an explanation given in one of the comics (don`t ask me which one xD). Obi-Wan`s saber defense had reached a level were it was practically unpenetrable. However, this came at a cost. Due to him focusing so much on defending against every possible attack that his enemy could make with the lightsaber he became vulnerable to physical strikes like punches and kicks and he also became vulnerable to force attacks. We see that several times in Star Wars Clone Wars. As far as I can remember he was never defeated by the sword in Clone Wars, his defeats came at the force abilities of his enemies. Asajj Ventress and Maul both managed to land force based attacks on Kenobi but they were unable to defeat him with the sword. While the force barrier is "passive" it still takes some concentration to keep it running, and Kenobi chose to concentrate on something else instead. He wasn`t weak in the force, he was actually quite powerful, but he did not employ the passive force wall because it would take away from his defensive skills with the sword.

I've never really thought about the concept of a "force shield" like that, but I've always assumed something along those lines. I just figured that Obi-Wan's concentration was broken, and that's why he was susceptible to the force pushes. If you're distracted, you can't counter moves in martial arts; so would it have been the same with the mental battles going on that we can't see. For instance, look at when Obi-Wan and Darth Vader both tried to force push each other on Mustafar. They were so focused and in their "empty mind" state (a martial arts term, for those who don't know what that means) that they were able to match each other perfectly, and their powers just locked into stalemate. That's what I've always assumed it was. Concentration. The force shield idea seems to match up with that perfectly. Thanks for giving me the term, Star Wars Theory!
