I played through this entire campaign - the campaign was pretty damn short and didn't really take advantage of the scale of the island or the combined arms.

I call total BULL SHIT on you! this game is about 6 hours in length when you have the Sack to play it on Hard core. That,s the only way to play this MASTER PIECE. And that,s not even including the Bonus missions ether. Then one has the DLC that is about 3 hours long. So you really don,t know what your speaking about. I played this game when it 1st hit the shelves until Code master pulled the plug. There were 5 of us that played and done nothing but owned the STATS on the board to this game, from 09 till it,s passing. Their is nothing about any mission that I don,t know. And that,s not bragging at all, that,s just being up front honest.

I love this game, unfortunately I got my hands on it in 2013 when the servers were already down. I agree that the campaign could have used more combined arms missions or vehicle focused missions. And I wish it was longer too, but it's a good game nonetheless

I agree, I think they just had some hardware limitations to be on the consoles. Going into the PS3 explore island or whatever there is soo much dead space that was not used in the game.

The original Operation Flashpoint was my first open world experience and it blew me away. One mission stood out for me. US spec-ops mission to eliminate a Russian supply base in town far behind enemy lines. The player was given no path to follow, no hints nor cues, you were just placed with a silenced MP5, pistol, knife and night-vision about 15-20 km from the objective at night. I stumbled north and found my way to a road and waited there. Eventually a UAZ came by so I took out the two soldiers riding in it with my MP5 and stole it. With this I managed to drive within 2 km of the target relatively unhassled. I then got out and snuck into the town. After silencing most of the guard with pistol and knife, I heard a huge convoy arrive full of soldiers, trucks and a couple of BMPs. I thought I was finished, two hours of mission time wasted (no checkpoints in this game). Then I saw it - an MI-24 sitting in the middle of a lot. I ran across and jumped in, it was both refuelled and armed. I had never flown a helicopter in this game yet but I immediately started her up - I had eliminated all the enemy soldiers in the immediate surroundings and the convoy was fast approaching - I rose up into the air and spotted the convoy for the first time, clumsily manoeuvring the helicopter as I learnt the controls and lined the convoy up for a strafing run. I eliminated most of it in one run and then continued to circle, strafing the town until the objective was complete before flying back to my extraction point on the beach. This was 15 years ago FFS. The Operation Flashpoint series has had some amazing people working on it. I really enjoyed Dragon Rising too, especially the squad control and AI. For the first time with that game I sat back and directed my squad, micromanaging the combat. No other game had ever managed before, or since, to pull my away from solo combat and manage my squad. The Arma series wears the crown for modding, multiplayer, community. But Flashpoint is the daddy of today's Mil-sims and many of its features still haven't been bested by its successors.

I went from N64's GoldenEye to Operation Flashpoint and I too was blown away. When the level in GoldenEye introduced the tank, I told a friend that war games were coming, and I was right. I mostly remember being blown away on how using a mouse for a shooter was amazing. You could literally and quickly aim at a bloody pixel ffs. Going back to a console controller is a joke in comparison. I'm going to go and play that mission you mentioned, but one thing, are you sure you had a knife? I don't recall ever seeing that in game.

Yep, although you have some details wrong (no pistol, and not nearly so far from the objective) that mission still stands out as one of the most tense and best designed in the series. The other mission that stands out is the one where you are alone in the forest and trying to make your way to the evac point. So many ways to do it, so many ways to die.

The Professor for me, 1.4k hours on Arma 3, I reeeeeeally don't mind the Arma controls, stance modifier is slightly finicky but the thing that lets it all down is the overall responsiveness. Arma is seriously bad at small things.. Like opening doors, and walking up stairs, it hurts. Oh and then the performance lmao, I'm not expecting 120 fps constant, but at least 80 on a multilayer server should be achievable, not impossible.

Same. The mod scene was epic back then too before the community became a bunch of whiny, elitist mega cunts which forced a lot of the best modders to leave due to the drama. I lost interest in the whole series shortly after ArmA 1 because of this, as much as I still love the games. If you were around in the early days you may even recognise my user name. I ran one of the first mod teams from before the days of Buzzdozer and the ability to import your own models. Our first proper mod was a flipped M113 made to partially resemble an AAVP7A1. We had a ranger and marine pack too which was a retexture of the original infantry models.

The AI in the game can actually be annoying as hell. Sometimes they're dumber as a bag of rocks, the next they're SpecialOpsRangerCAGDeltaSEALTACPPJ's a second later. For example, when I used to play, shooting the enemies were easy, they dropped like flies not even shooting back sometimes. But a later in another mission, they were all dead eyed snipers literally killing my entire squad under 5 minutes.

As a Chinese, this game was really weird to play, mainly for its voice acting. I'm a-okay for gunning down Chinese soldiers in a war sim game, but the voice acting for Chinese soldiers was in an uncanny zone, that they have pretty good pronunciations and authentic accent, but the scripts they use were horribly translated.

My problem with this game was a mission later on, where you and your squad had to capture a small village, then defend that same village until help arrives. I've never been able to get past that mission, and there are no cheats or GOD mode to get past it, so basically I've never experienced most of the single-player campaign! I'd install this game and play it right now if I could get past that level, the game still looks and plays great even after 8 years!

I know what you mean. What I did was holding the right side with my squad. So basically you stopped flanking enemies. They came through the Woods from lower ground and than came into the village. So if you were positioned in the village you were overrun but if you stay just outside the village on the right you could see them coming. Hope it helps.

Dude, I played the dragon rising singleplayer back when I was a kid and it was awesome. It was shocking to have a first person shooter that didn't hold your hand (back when I was a casual console gamer) and I got frustrated but it was worthwhile to get through the campaign on the hardest difficulty. I used to daydream at school about how I could get through the missions as efficiently as possible without dying. And this game was intuitive to me as a middle schooler, which is really saying a lot.

The game was limited by the console centric design choices. Like the original Operation Flashpoint games and the Arma series has shown, a game like Dragon Rising relies heavily on user generated content in order for it to have any lasting appeal and any chance at a successful sequel. This was ruined by the multi platform pipeline development that Codemasters continue to use while developing their games and the tiny amount of RAM and processing power of the 360 and PS3 meant that the PC version which was the only version of the game that had any chance of ever becoming anything was limited by the same restrictive factors. I speak from experience of being a content developer for both the OFP:DR and Arma games in the past.

Look at that fucking UI, it's BEAUTIFUL. Back in those times UIs were clunky and kinda ugly, but the UI in Dragon Rising is just so damn beautiful. The yellow matches perfectly. The font is beautiful. The design is amazing. The team who worked on that game truly were a talented bunch.

Codemasters were masters of failure. OPF:DR is THE biggest disappointment I ever had with a game ever. It just didn't felt like the original Operation Flashpoint anymore. Perhaps if it wasn't named OPF:DR, it wouldn't be such a big disappointment but since it was named as such, they couldn't avoid expectations. I think that among many problems I had with this game, was the consolish tone down of the gunplay really. It felt fake. "Plastic" if I could say so. It was making me absolutely cringe. Design, story, ui (and more) wise this game had a huge potential I'll admit, but they just dumbed it all down too much.

Wow its 2019 days from 2020 I just logged off of arma 3 and I was just thinking about how much i missed the AI in OPFPDR, Watching the ai move literally blew me away I remembered them being better than ARMA 3 but forgot how much better. I really loved the full control I felt I had with just the controller reticle selector thing. This game was only really stifled because the american population was still totally obsessed with COD they literally thought any other shooter was an attempted rip off of call of duty or halo or maybe battlefield. A decade later and i have never seen bounding AI like that. that code clearly had threat direction and i bet every item laid has a cover or concealment tag or attribute to them. That AI was actually scary at times. I have heard rumors that AI is not getting that much better because some companies that make software for the military/s are contracted to NOT make it better. I could see some truth to this in some respects its either known or speculated that BOHE has a branch used for military and made VB2. I also believe that BOHE is an incredibly toxic company just from the head to the toes. They are extremely arrogant and defensive about anything, I'm willing to bet there is a very bad culture there. Everything that causes their failure's seems to make sense to me.

My biggest issue with the game is that it took a huge steep back from the orginal console Operation Flash Point: Elite. Elite had around 30 main missions, I guess you could say it had a second game in it that had 15-20 missions taking place around the citizens and them rising up, and then like 20 more odd side missions. It's the one thing I miss about the days or the orginal xbox and PS2, full games and maybe some bonus content.

The repetitive dying in seemingly unbeatable situations that I'd come up against at the same point in a level was what stopped me from playing through the campaign on Dragon Rising. I remember one mission you and your squad had to get to an enemy occupied compound at the bottom of a long sloping hill. All you had at the start of the mission was 3 magazines for your rifle. In order to get down there you had to suppress the guys shooting at you. Of course each time I would either get a lethal wound since I was in open ground or I'd run out of ammunition and again get shot and die. Couldn't get any further through the campaign- very very frustrating. Maybe it would have been different playing with actual people in my squad so I could get better revives but I never did figure out that level

And developers who care about more than just making a quick buck. Codemasters only pushed this shit out because they had a messy split with BIS and they wanted to put a dampener on the release of ARMA by using the established brand as selling power. The thing mostly failed because of the niche nature of these kind of games. Most of the people interested in them knew the story behind it all so they didn't really care so much for what Codemasters did and instead went with BIS and the ARMA series.

It's a limitation of the game engine. It can't really handle all that much which is another reason it failed even compared to the original OFP. You had a limit of 4096 units per faction in OFP. If your machine, the server and everyone else's rig could handle this then the engine would run it. There were 4 factions in OFP. West, East, Civilian and Resistance (who could be friendly to any or all, or none of the others). In terms of scale OFP was massively ahead of its time. I remember CTI (capture the island) games that would go on for hours with like 50 other players (and hope you don't drop out as there was no join in progress back then). It was so satisfying being part of a team that worked together with proper roles. I always ended up being a taxi of sorts lol. I'd shuttle troops and equipment around the map in a Blackhawk or HIP (if playing as the Soviets) and fly like 3m above the deck haha. Good times. You couldn't do any of this kind of thing in the Codemasters OFP, it was way too limited. Plus there was a tether range limit to the host (no dedicated servers as far as I remember) of I think 2km, or something else pretty pathetic given the map size so if you went beyond this you'd be teleported back in range or die depending on the way the mission was set up. It's an utter joke. If you play it single player all the time then you don't run into these kind of things, but if you played it as MP even semi seriously you'd see just how much of a failure this game was.

My pain with this series is deep since I moderated the official forums since CWC (first hosted by a third-party network before Codemasters created their own) and even ran a fan site. I loved the original and put many years into it and the community, only to have Codemasters try to take too big a slice of the COD/BF pie at the expense of what made OFP great in the first place. I agree with this video in that the modding was a core issue. Meanwhile BIS went in a different direction and played on OFP's strengths, but at the same time never really addressing the weaknesses. So many problems that existed in the original OFP are still in ARMA 3 today.

I totally agree with you. It really is shame that both companies are such opposites of each other since if they literally were together more tight it would mean their games would be absolutely flawless in every way. But as you said, even without that, if the modding community would be there for Dragon Rising and source code more free for all the creative people out there, it would definitely have a different fate compared to what it got to now. As someone who played the very first Cold War Crisis Flashpoint, i was very curious about this one back then and thought " Oh shit, continuation " But there was just something missing, since it was lead by Codemasters this time instead of Bohemia so you could really see and feel the difference, something was off and you just knew it was not the exact type of game that should have that name unless Bohemia would be involved more in it. Regardless Arma and Flashpoint will always remain these really cool gems even tho they both might miss out on things from each other that they could benefit from. it almost makes you want to throw a party for both companies and say " Yo guys... lets connect and work on games together instead of dividing shall we? " x D

Looks like fun but a military sim is indeed nothing without the modding community.

I played the campaign of Dragon Rising (cooperatively) with two friends when it was new. We all liked the way the missions played out. As you say, the game is "polished", but we felt that what Codemasters tried to pass off as an online experience was pretty awful (NO dedicated servers???). Once we finished the missions, there really wasn't anything else to do, so we moved on....to ArmA.

This is the first game where I got section attacked by the enemy. I got busted on a stealth mission, and the enemy used smoke to cover movement, and BOUNDED INTO ME across fields. I got suppressed and flanked and I wasn't even mad about it

I got this game about a year ago through the Codemaster's bundle, and honestly, I haven't played it all that much. Dragon Rising is like having an awesome, pretty girlfriend who has horrible parents.

One of the only complaints I have of this great game was that the map size was huge for the game yet never fully used especially the stratovolcano on the right side or the salt plains, second naval base, etc...

Why did it fail, maybe because of the long ass name?

There was little to no content after COOP, no modsupport, so many game breaking bugs and if I remember correctly some of them were only fixed in a dlc that cost money. There were other things too, but these are the first that I remember.

Zoltan Csikos Are you serious? :D You do realise that Arma 2 still thrives, more than this game did or ever will, because of mods. It was released 8 years ago... 8 years! Not to even speak about how DayZ, originally a one man made MOD, made Arma 2 surface again when it was already 4 years old. It topped Steams most popular list for a long time when DayZ mod got popular! Just to underline how youre making a fool of yourself with your comment, I wanna tell you that I bought this on x360 when it was released. I had played and loved the original Operation Flashpoint on PC back in the early 2000's so ofc I wanted to see a next gen version of it. Then this abomination came and it was nothing like was promised and nothing like the original OFP! Why is this meaningful, you might think. I wasnt expecting mod support for the game as I was a console player at the time. It was the game breaking bugs, laggy and broken MP and lack of content that destroyed the game for me and all my friends who bought it.
