Hungary was involved in ruling the Austro-Hungarian Empire. One could argue that even the Hungarian Kingdom was an empire, considering how many nations were under the rule of Hungarians. No offense there but Hungary was one of the major powers we struggled against. Along with the Ottomans, Poles, Russians

@@abunea Yes, the kingdom was a major power at that time. However, after that everything got downhill. We were under the ottomans, then Austrians(like even in austro-hungary time, we didn't have any major influence outside of our borders(like it was more of a parasite situation)) then after the breakapart a straight 100 year struggle just for our freedom... For last 600 years everything was just for our freedom.

I had the oportunity to meet a romanian veteran who fought at Stalingrad about 10 years ago. The poor soul still remembered in detail a lot of things about his battle and how his fellow soldiers were killed near him daily. He even still knew army songs and poems from the war. I was just a kid. That man sparked my interest in ww2 history and history in general. Was such a powerful story to hear and picture. God bless his brave soul

Much love to Romania from France, and yes, it was larger and overall better equipped than italy. We all seen italy in ww2... Despite its good navy, The italian army wasnt as good as Romania. correct! , Romania was made like a sandwich between Nazy Germany and Soviet Russia in 1940-1941! we despise soviets...so...from 2 evil empires , we choose one , to survive...i think , hard to be in charge of ruling Romania in 1939-1941, don't know what to choose Hitler promise in June, 1941 to Ion Antonescu to give back Moldova to Romania (occupied by USSR in the previous year , 28 june, 1940) if Romania will join Axis for Operation Barbarossa...so...the rest is history ...even nowadays Republic of Moldova (ex romanian land until 28 june 1940) is a buffer state made by Russia against NATO *(Romania is a member NATO since 2004)* that's why *Russia of Putin wants Ukraine to not become NATO member* ...see current tensions in the region , Russia wants their neighbors as a shield ,BELARUS is pro Russia and is an ally of Putin ,and Ukraine want to escape from Russia and to choose her path (pro E.U. and NATO) , but Putin say NO! As a romanian, I am happy to find this accurate video of my country’s history and a very important moment. I had the chance to shake the hand of King Michael and his wife-they came to my school, without cameras and media, he was so humble, simple and the only true leader Romania had in decades. He was in his ‘70 and people still remembered him with great respect and love-outside my school there was a small group of older people who spontaneously gathered after finding out about his presence and shouted monarchic slogans. It took me years to find out the true information about this historical moment and what a great impact it had on the war- shortening it with 6 months and saving millions of lives, as Romania was the pain provider of oil for Hitler’s Germany.

@@_bob9740 Bobby do you get this butthurt over Finland switching sides in the Lapland war? It seems you don't understand Realpolitik at all, you'd expect everyone to fight to the last grandmother in some autistic fit out of Hitler's playbook. Romania had already capitulated to the Soviets. They didn't "switch sides" until they had already lost and tried (and succeeded) to reclaim their territory. Meanwhile Hungary actually did betray the Axis well before, Horthy tried to make covert alliances with the Allies, Hitler discovered the betrayal and as a consequence Germany occupied Hungary and outed Horthy.

*P.S : THE VIDEO GOT MONETIZED AFTER 1 DAY. But its start was slower because of this.* Hello Guys! I had to re-upload the video because it was marked as 'demonetized' by KZbin. I spent about 100 hours researching, writing, drawing, animation for this video. And I liked it very much. I am quite satisfied with the final product. But it seems that sometimes, even if I create educational content without "forbidden words" and only with good faith and transparency, my hard work becomes worthless. Looks like this video is demonized again. I don't want to ask for anything from anyone. All I want is to be allowed to do my work without being told by an algorithm that I don't deserve to be monetized. And because of this, the video is not suggested, is not viewed and dies slowly. 100 hours, maybe, for nothing. I am not trying to play the victim here, but if YOU really love what I am doing, and if you can of course, please consider to support my long hours on my patreon : www.patreon.com/Knowledgia Anyway, Thank you so much for your time to watch my content!

For those who consider this a betrayal... Romania and Germany fought together but were not friends. Germany signed the RM pact with Russia in '39, trough it Romania was forced to give up Basarebia to Russia. Then in august 1940 trough, another pact at Vienna Romania was forced by Germany and Italy to give Northen Transilvania to Hungary. In September 1940 Germany forced Romania to give South Dobrogea to Bulgary. So in a single year, Romania lost close to 100 000 km of land and 33% of the population (6,8 million peoples), without pulling the trigger once, and Germany was the main actor in that. So Romania and Germany were not comrades or something, Romania simply fought for its survival, and in the yard of two behemoths that decided by themselves to play war. If there is a betrayer here, that's not Romania...

They turned against their former allies without notification, just in one night. it was not a betrayal, according to you. About the territorial losses: they belonged to other countries before 1920. So, if you consider from a Roumanian standpoint: you are right, they were deprived of the territories. From all the other neighbours standpoints: they simply gained back what was lost to Roumania. Fun fact: the 1940 decision on the resigning from Northern Transsylvania in favir of Hungary was iinitiated by Roumania by the Axis.

Two of my great-grandfathers, that I know of, have fought in WW2, have been captured by the soviets and sent to Siberia. One of them escaped, along with a group of soldiers, and they literally 'walked' back to Romania. It took them several months to cross Russia, constantly hiding in the woods, and trying to survive. They had to work for farmers for food and clothes, they also learned how to speak Russian during that time. After a long journey they reached the city of Brasov, which is a large city located in the center of today Romania, where they were recaptured and sent back to Siberia. Imagine that shit, man...I can't even comprehend how they must have felt. However, after a short period, Romania switched sides and they were freed. I don't know what happened to my other captured great-grandfather, but I remember a few stories from his wife, my great-grandmother, from during the time he was gone. She said that it was much better when we were allied with the Germans, she said most of them were quite polite and that they were trading small kegs of beer and chocolate with the peasants for food. But after we switched sides and the Russians came, it was horrifying. They were raping women and stealing even though we were 'allies'. They regularly came to peoples homes to take their food, and especially alcohol, by force. My great-grandmother used to hide my grandmother and her sister in the attic under blankets so the Russians wouldn't find them when they came looting. Communist pieces of shit, they set Romania back 50 years. And we still suffer because of their actions today, being lead by remnants of the communist regime and their off-springs. EDIT: And what we see going on in Ukraine today (March, 2022) is a reenactment of what Russia did during WW2.

In 1939 was a secret pact (Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact) between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. Its clauses provided a written guarantee of peace by each party towards the other and a commitment that declared that neither government would ally itself to or aid an enemy of the other. In addition to the publicly-announced stipulations of non-aggression, the treaty included the Secret Protocol, which defined the borders of Soviet and German spheres of influence. Germany, through this secret pact, helps the Soviets to occupy part of Romania, then goes to Romania and tells them that it will help Romania recover its Bessarabia and Bukovina if Romania offers oil to the German war industry and wages war on the eastern front until the defeat of the USSR. Germany betrayed the USSR and violated the pact. Germany played a perverse game in which it helped to dismantle Romania in order to later play the role of its savior.

There is nothing inhonorable in betraying the third Reich considering how disgusting this state was for Slavs and Greeks that used to live there or under their occupation. In fact Germany itself exists mainly due of the betrayalm when Polish king had granted Prussia independence in 1657 to make sure they won't do anything against the Commonwealth. Anyway, honour is something that is not really useful in diplomacy or war and as history showed us, it was used only to blind people and let them die for someone else's interests.

You missed an essential event: 23 August 1939. Foreign affairs ministers of Hitler and Stalin signed the alliance agreement (Ribbentrop-Molotov pact). It was just a week before the official start of the war. By it, Europe was split in two. What happened with Poland (occupied by both Germany and USSR respecting the demarcation line) also happened with Romania, but by proxies. Romania was invaded in 1940 from 3 sides, by Russia and by two of Germany's proxy, Hungary and Bulgaria. It was impossible for her to fight all these invaders at once or reject both European socialist empires without the help of Western democracies. A similar act happened at the end of the war, when Churchill and Roosevelt replaced Hitler in a new secret deal with Stalin (at Tehran and Yalta). Again, Romania was thrown under the buss, given to Stalin in exchange for Greece.

Before Trianon, Hungarians were a minority in their own country, constituting just 40%. They could keep the other 60% in check with the joint effort of Vienna, but even Hungarian nationalists wanted their own ethno-state since 1848. Which they got through Trianon. They did lose the provinces where Romanians, Croats, Slovaks, Ukrainians were majority, but that's hardly an injustice. There are so many Romanians in Transilvania, that if it would be occupied by Hungary today, they would constitute the majority in resulting (expanded) Hungary.

It should be noted that the king also had been negotiating the coup with the US, UK and Soviets and was given some assurances which ended up not happening. For ex, he was promised Romania would be named a co-belligerent country at the end of the war, not an occupied one. But once the war ended, Stalin said it is occupied and Roosevelt/Churchill both backed off and let Stalin have his way, per their Yalta conference split of Europe. Based on the promises King Michael was given in 1944, the coup seemed like the best option.

When you are a country that was systematically under siege since the Roman Empire becouse of their geopolitical status, that was attacked by the Ottoman Empire for almost 500 years ( wich was unsuccessful and stopped them to enter central Europe) when the USSR constantly taking out territories for their own benefit and getting involved in the election of another sovereign state, and the Austria-Hungary empire was betraying almost every leader that Romania had. Where was the west then, why didn't they helped Romania I wonder. They were to preoccupied to rage war on other states from other continents and enslave their people I guess.(Even under the Ceausescu regime they supported Czechoslovakia when they had been under threat by the Russians, even tho they had been communist they did not stand and fought for what was right not letting the USSR influence spread further) I wonder what country survived for more then 2000 years being attacked by 4+ empires? @The Nova renaissance Romania had a secret alliance with the central powers before ww1. The reason why it was secret is because there were many Romanians in Transylvania which was occupied by AH and if they made the alliance public it would've made Transylvanians think they forgot about them. In 1914 when ww1 started, the king at the time Carol I wanted to join Germany's side however the rest of the politicians didn't approve and Romania stayed neutral. By 1916 the situation changed, Carol Ist was now dead and replaced by Ferdinand who chose to enter the war on the Entente's side and liberate Transylvania despite Ferdinand being a German himself

Hungary tried to switch sides but was caught in the act. The son of the acting regent Admiral Horthy thought he was meeting Allied representatives to discuss Hungary leaving the war. It was a ruse and instead Horthy's son was captured by Otto Skorzeny's special troops. Hitler asked Admiral Horthy to meet him in Germany to discuss Hungary's situation. While away German troops seized power in Hungary. When Horthy returned he was greeted by German troops, driven to the palace, and was instructed on what he was supposed to do to appease Germany. In the end Germany seized complete control anyways.
