Great interview. Loved the history. I have found something y'all may not have yet. Smokey did work on them. The first generation Cleveland head was a direct port valve was center of the port and the push rods crossed each other and the cam had the intake and exhaust lobes swapped. I have some pictures of them it's one only known engine to survive cause it kept kicking out the push rods. But I don't know how to post pictures on here for you to see

This is one of the best interviews of 1970's Drag Racing era I've ever heard. WOW! Reverend Cleveland sure knows his stuff! I grew up in Fremont, CA and watched these guys....Rooted for Glidden (I owned a 340 Duster) when he traveled through with his winning Arrow....Anyone that could change from an long established loyalty of FoMoCo to Mopar and never suffer a long learning curve to "get up to speed" is a true HERO! Glidden worked his behind off against many talented and well educated racers. Reverend Cleavland might want to Hit up the Turlock Swap meet if he ever gets the chance....I've seen RARE FoMoCo NASCAR parts pass throught there....I remember one year looking at a set of Cast Iron Boss 429 heads and some early style valve covers for the same at a guys booth. Great interview...hope to see more of this amazing treasure of wealth. 👍

I've been racing a 70 351 4V Cleveland in my 72 Torino for years and I love it. I have turned it 8k on more than one occasion and it's still pulling. The heads have been significantly ported and milled and I run a solid roller cam. It's an awesome engine. My car is heavy so I'm not setting any records but it runs strong and has one of the nastiest idles I've ever heard uncapped. It's nice to see this channel and others who love the engine and have this depth of knowledge about these engines. Keep up the great interviews!

I had a 70 1/2 Falcon that I bought at the auction in the “Red” lane. All that was wrong was that the lash was zero clearance on a solid cam and the firing order was the 15426378 instead of the right one. Got that and milled the heads a little bit and did a valve job. Also put some gear in it. It was really mean.

@@DragBoss351Cleveland Unfortunately I had to sell it when we were married. I look back 40 years and that car really hurt to let it go. It was right in the Goldilocks zone between driving and racing, with slicks I was able to run in the 12.90s just in Drive and loading the converter. My 67 Mustang was a bit rowdy and had a 4 speed. I was running in the high 10s with it on Slicks , a .060 over 390 with a 428 crank so I had to sell it too. I kept my 67 F100 390 car engine. and my wife drove her late grandfathers 69 Galaxie. These were better for hauling kids. I finally got a 68 Mustang coupe with a nice 289 4 speed. I really miss them all. I lost most of my vision. It has come back some but not enough to get a license. But I have enjoyed building engines and sharing knowledge where I can. But I miss that 70 Falcon, Black, taxi cab interior, the flat Ford Motor Company dog dish caps and beauty rings. Walker straight through ovals and 2.5 pipes with the voluptuous exhaust manifolds. That car was just neat and what Ford should have been building since 66.

We broke our pro mod so once we packed up I finally after 3 days got a chance to walk to the grandstands and actually see a race but as I walked by his pit and you got to think at that time I was 30 years old I turned into a shy kid and could not even walk up to him nowadays I look back and regret it so bad because I found out how good of a people person he was and I just set the time did not want to mess with him cuz he was working his butt off and he was by himself. What a lovely man. Just brilliant. I love these interviews, you have created a platform where us little guys/ fans can learn the finer details of our heroes. And I thank you for it. As an aside I remember reading in an American car mag of some canted valve heads for a small block Chev that were lurking around Smokie's damn garage and some photos for proof. Apparently they were there for testing. Do you know anymore on these.

Thanks gibbsey. I am trying to bring back pro stock history and all those involved. Most are dying off, so I want their words and memories to live on. I have heard of those heads. See if I find some info, others may chime in. Thanks mate

I believe the Mopar Polysphere heads were the first canted valve production heads in 1955. Offenhauser did some canted stuff in the 1930's but i didn't count that. The Big Block Chevy, I hear they actually got it more right on the mystery motor than the production motor and the Cleveland which is my favorite canted valve engine by far. I'm not really a ford guy, just a car guy. Bit the Cleveland and FE have a spot in my heart for sure.

Awesome interview, lots of great info and awesome history! Does the Rev. have a site somewhere online? Either of you guys know anything about Pro Stock Engineering in Paramount, CA? I remember seeing an article in Hot Rod Magazine on the Cleveland builds they were doing towards the end of the Pre-500 Inch era. I went by there a few weeks later as my grandparents lived about a mile away, to get a t-shirt or sticker and was promptly shooed away, after hearing the owner cursing Hot Rod for publishing the article. I haven't thought about it since till today. I wish my dad and grandpa were still around to talk to, as they both were deep into the Southern Cal Hot Rod and Sports Car culture. They more into family when Pro Stock took off, but knew all the locals between Torrance and Compton and out in the S.F. Valley, Vic Edelbrock, Ed Iskendarian, Keith Black, Ed Pink, Carol Shelby, Ken Miles. Some guy named George Barris used to practice airbrushing in my grampa's garage in Compton in the early to mid '50s. Dad used to get free prototype parts for his flathead Lincoln powered Model A roadster from some of those guys, and grampa used to frequent Ken Mile's shop with his MGs and Triumphs.

My first car I bought for $1500 was a ‘73 Ford Mustang Mach 1 with a 351C. It was nothing special but I worked on it doing the usual stuff a high school kid could do working on a McDonald’s budget. Loved that car! It was T-boned by some dingbat who ran a red light. I bought it back from the insurance company and stripped the car. Things got interesting when I bought a second ‘73. It was a nicer optioned car with the C-6 trans, gold down rear seat, staggered rear shocks and rear sway bar. But what was really cool was the 1970 4V quench chamber heads and the ram air induction that the previous guy put on it. Later on I tore that engine down and it had 4 bolt mains and the oil pan had baffles. I was a very happy 19 year old. The highlight from that era was when I beat a brand new late ‘80s Corvette on the street with a car I had pieced together with parts paid for by working at McDonald’s for $3.25/hr. Still have that car and it will be passed down to my girls along with a ‘69 Mach1. Thanks for posting this cool Cleveland info Drag Boss. I really enjoyed this video!

Paul, there is a wicked history enjoyed hearing that story. Glad you still have the cars. I bet you’re happy at 19 years old. I got my first cleveland at 16, but not even get in the car until I was 18. It was running a Weezer, it sounds like you still have a smile on your face from blown past that 80s Corvette. Thanks for taking the time. So true about its very biased history from late 69 to the 73 cut-off. Really strange to have a dynamic missile like the Boss 302/Boss 351 heads and the other 4V 69 to 73s. Then no development till Yates and Rush NASCAR alloy headed 357s from 1983 on. A 10 year gap of Nothing-Ness from Ford.
@DragBoss351Cleveland3 жыл бұрын
That was your death of the muscle car, for sure, you started to see it with 79 fox body, and that still took until 86 When I remember it taking off, alloy heads started in 82, nascar stuff not a lot running them as the exhaust was so high, no headers.
