Having studied this topic a good deal in the past, I tend to be with you on it; the U.S. played an important role in helping to out spend the Soviets militarily, which may or may not have been a deciding factor in the collapse of the U.S.S.R., but one thing is for sure: the Soviets did way more to destroy themselves than we ever did!

The US didn’t play any role. Reagan was absolutely scared of the Soviets who were more advanced militarily and strategically. The key factors were Gorbachev launching Perestroika and the mass strike of the Polish workers who were later joined by other Eastern Block countries.

A key thing Reagan did that many overlook was work with Saudi Arabia to drastically lower oil prices on the global market, this was a major hit to the Soviet economy that has historically been heavily relied on selling natural resources.

Wait what? Where do you get your information from? I distinctly remember the events leading to the end of the Cold War. The Soviet Union at the time, had its top boxer make an entrance into professional boxing world with their best athlete, who initially wanted to take on our U.S. World champion at the time. Instead, the U.S. champions best friend decides to fight him! As a result, he sadly ends up getting fatally beaten in the ring! Enraged by the loss, our U.S. champion decides to fight the Soviet Union boxer on his turf to avenge the death of his best friend and defend the honor of our country U.S.A! I remember this famous boxing match between these great athletes, after 14 rounds of endless bombardment of punches from both sides, the underdog Rocky Baboa not only wins the fight but also wins the love and respect of the Russian people! Both boxer were extremely exhausted from their exceptionally long fight but then our champion, Rocky Baboa gives his final speech "During this fight, I've seen a lot of changing, in the way you feel about me, and in the way I feel about you. In here, there were two guys killing each other, but I guess that's better than twenty million. I guess what I'm trying to say, is that if I can change, and you can change, everybody can change!" - ending the cold war!

With many of those questions, I often feel the answer is D) all of the above. The same answer applies to "Why did Hillary Clinton lose the 2017 election" or "Why did the Roman Empire collapse". Very often with critical points in history, there isn't one answer to explain everything imho.

Definitely true, but often people over focus on one thing (and sometimes it is the wrong thing!). For example, I know people who say it was all Ronald Reagan. Not just that, they only mention his "Tear down this wall!" speech as a catalyst for ending the Cold War, when that is far from the truth.

But a sentence plagiarized from Pink Floyd's most popular album ... I'm skeptical of the influence of that sentence. If anything, the "tear down this wall" thing was the least consequential of all factors involved. "ich bin ein berliner" probably had far more influence because it demonstrated to Eastern Berlin that the United States wasn't going to abandon Germany. I live in Germany. Everyone here is still talking about "ich bin ein berliner" but "tear down this wall" has been forgotten except by history buffs.

The Cold War didn't end though... the only thing that happened of major import was the splintering of the Soviet Union, but hostilities between east and west still remain to this day with politicians bickering and trying to one-up each other.

You could even argue the Cold War was just a continuation of the great game (the great game was like a 19th century Cold War between the British Empire and the Russian Empire over control of Central Asia). You could argue after WW2, the U.S. took the place of the UK as Russia’s main rival. If that’s the case, than the Cold War wasn’t really as ideological as people think. It was really just two superpowers fighting over geopolitical dominance. In a sense, capitalism vs communism was not the cause of the Cold War but a symptom of the Cold War. And that can explain why America and Russia are hostile today. The only thing that hurts this theory is that the USA and Soviet Union had tensions before FDR became American President as following the Russian Revolution during WW1, you had the first red scare and the US and it’s allies invade Russia during the Russian civil war and through the 1920s and early 1930s there was tensions and the U.S. didn’t regonize the USSR until Roosevelt became president. Than both sides came together to fight the Axis powers in WW2. But I still think that theory holds true as I still think the Cold War, or a version of it, would have occurred after WW2 between Russia and America even if Russia hadn’t become communist. Not only that, but during the proxy wars of the Cold War, both the United States of America and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics backed regimes that were authoritarian and in a lot of ways just used capitalism or communism has buzz terms. Both US-backed dictatorships and Soviet-backed dictatorships committed atrocities in the name of the geopolitical battle between two super powers. But that’s how I look at it, the Cold War wasn’t really capitalism vs communism as it was America vs Soviet Russia. The ideological battle was just frosting on the cake, it was something both sides had to argue about.

One additional factor in the end of the Cold War/the collapse of the USSR - many Soviet citizens saw Gorbachev's reforms as just more top-down control. His government failed to garner widespread public support. Regardless how we in the West view 'Gorby' to the Soviets it was just more crap from above and they were tired of taking it. To me, the Cold War and to some extent the Second World War ended when West Germany and East Germany unified, once again giving us one Germany. But like the beginning of the Cold War there isn't one specific date and time in which it ended. As with the beginning, it was a series of events within a few years that ushered the end.

I think it was a mixture of Reagan’s tough anti-communist policy, the US economy having incredible growth and the West progressed. While the Soviets failed to sustained a modern system in a world of the internet and Gorbachev bringing bits of Capitalism and Democracy and westernizing the USSR.

History is immensely complex because it's impossible to simply point to one event being the reason for another because those events are always influenced by the events that preceded it an so forth. I would argue that the Soviet Union never truly recovered from the scars of WW2 (you can still see it in Russia's population pyramid) and Stalin's rule, which crested a state reliant completely reliant on suppression and oppression to function. The leads to the rule of Brezhnev which caused the stagnation and decline of the economy and country. Gorbachev's actions were an attempt to fix the issues his predecessors left him, but he ultimately shattered remaining illusions about the Soviet state and gave the people of the republics (and satellite states, remember his abandonment of ruling through oppression applied to enforcing the Kremlin's will onto them as well) the means to act, leading to the collaspe of the communist world behind the iron curtain. Interestingly the major communist state that survived this turmoil in the east, China, liberalized it's economy much like Gorbachev did (Deng Xiaoping actually started such reforms well before Gorbachev), but refused to allow any dissent to the parties rule, quite infamously demonstrating the means they would go to to do so on July 4th, 1989. Interestingly enough, it seems that China's leaders realized Marxism-Leninism's crucial flaw after the death of Mao, that in Marx's theory Communism was an evolution of capitalidmm that was to be achieved in a highly productive capitalist society. In otherwords, a strong economic foundation is needed to achieve Communism. Quite predictably in hindsight, the Soviet Union and China's attempt to turn agrarian societies into socialist utopia's were unsuccessful, as even though successes were achieved, especially in heavy industries, by rejecting market economics the economy of the nations were not efficient enough to enable the nations wealth to grow and spread among the population. After the rule of Deng this became the CCP's justification of the abandonment of traditional Marxism-Leninism's, that the country had to first become rich before it could become a Communist paradise. Of course under Xi Jingping nationalism has become a far more important justification of the party's rule (this is a story and discussion for another day), but economic development driven by market forces remains a key priority of the party, and so far their immense success in doing so has begun to make the Chinese model appear to be a viable alternative to the liberal western model of states, a development that has scarred many in such western nations, including myself. Of course one could also argue that the Chinese nation is uniquely suited for such a model of governance thanks to the legacy of dynastic rule, bringing me back to my original point the history is infinitely complex. However, it is only through the futile attempt to somehow understand history in it's entirety that we can truly understand the world as it is today.

To be honest, I personally think that the economic pressure from the Afghan War and the arms race with the Americans during Reagan's administration took too much money from the Soviet government to the point that the markets barely had food (*cough* * cough Venezuela *cough*) and the people just went mad at the government, therefore leading to it's downfall, and as someone who has ancestors from the Soviet Union, I can confirm the country did speak Russian, quite well even. Also, during Gorbachev's and Yeltsin's leadership the oil prices went down, and oil was the main trade factor for the Soviet\Russian economy. Great and informative video though, Mr. Beat^^!!!!

Actually the Cold War ended by mistake. The President of East Germany put out a statement that the border crossings at the Berlin Wall would be opened. People rushed to the crossing points thinking they had already been opened and when the border guard tried to call somebody higher up for clarification no one would answer the phone so he took it upon his own initiative and opened the border crossing into West Berlin. With that one act the Cold War ended. It took a -few years for it be official but the Cold War ended the night the Berlin Wall fell.

Interesting. I would add a couple of comments. At the beginning of the Soviet Union most of Russian were peasants and extremely poor. The Revolution may have had good intentions but with a leader like Stalin I would argue that few systems would succeed. Having said that the Soviet Union moved forward. World War II resulted in 20 million lost lives and devastation to their economy. It was with help from the allies that Russia was left to fight on the western front and allowed devastation. They recovered enough to provide a challenge to the West. When Gorbachev came to power he recognized the stagnation and heavy load of trying to continue with the Cold War. What would have happened if his proposal to cut back on the militarism? And lastly, like Vietnam, the war in Afghanistan was a development that certainly was costly to the Russians. And of course we helped fund the opposition to Russia. In the end their system and the greed of those at the top made failure predictable.

This was a beautiful and informative video, you deserve credit for a lot of your historical and political accuracy! But, I will interject my historical/political viewpoint: 1. Truman's containment foreign policy didn't contained communism b/c it continued to spread. 2. Detente didn't stop the Soviet Union from expansionism in Africa and Central America, nor its Global (KGB) spying or its many other attempts at subversion of Western Political, Economic and Scientific espionage. 3. When President Ronald Reagan came to power he did change the U.S. foreign policy and became more aggressive in its determination to end all policies that didn't work in favor of the U.S. Therefore, R.R. did in fact--push the U.S.S.R. over the edge at the right time that they were in serious Economic and Political Quicksand time of internal disruption! Plus, funding the Rebels of Afgan. did put the U.S.S.R. in a serious foreign policy problem that led to a humiliating defeat of a declining Evil Empire that murder over 20 millions of its own citizens! To downgrade R.R.'s legacy in contributing to the End of the Cold War creates a false historical narrative that only empowers delusional left wing historical revisionism! The difference is that China was able to unite (most) of these ethnic minorities before nationalism became such a big thing. Nationalism didn't exist much until the 19th century, and only rapidly began to spread throughout the 20th century. China had united those groups before then.
