It's a well designed mask (in a vacuum at the very least) that doesn't work perfectly for the character, but services them to an appropriate extent and doesn't detract from the film itself much if at all in my opinion.

Glad im not the only one, ive have been in online discourse involving Sam Rami spider man for years and have never herd anyone complain about the mask being bad. Maybe complaints with going with a hard mask over CG/Make up or something but no complaints about the mask itself being bad. Feels like im in an alternative reality the way hes talking about it in the video. I think it loosk great.

As much as the concept of a mask tracking the facial movements intrigues me, I doubt it would translate well into the big screen. It would look goofy and impractical. The one we got looks PHENOMENAL in any scene involving fire or similar lighting. The design is honestly really good while maintaining some form of realism.

I completely agree, I have bever hesrd about this complaint before that the Mask is bad. He was a maddened tech guy hiding his identity not a art major or a guy who would walk into a common costume store to buy a mask to throw bombs around and fly at high speeds and altitudes.

With all due respect, the mask *is* explained via the scenery in Norman’s room; it’s given a mini montage, prior to the infamous mirror scene, where we see a series of ‘war-like’ masks… that’s where the design, in the story, comes from and, honestly, I love it!! Yes, it’s not the ‘ideal’ design but it was a big step up for the time and the highlights of purple (via the lighting) creates that Goblin image, while keeping it grounded within the Rami universe; I think to call the mask outright ‘terrible’ is disregarding the world building Rami and co spotlight within the film itself but each to their own.

I agree, I think ultimately they went with the best choice they could make. They couldn't use that test makeup face because it would probably be too scary for kids, and would take a huge chunk of the budget as well. The Goblin also has to have a mask where he's unrecognisable and can remove it quickly when he needs to. The designers were smart enough to allow the audience to see his eyes during key moments, yet not enough for Norman to reveal his identity. Personally I like the mask.

In all of batmans movie, batmans mask has looked worse. But the Green Goblin in this movie looks wayyyy cooler than I couldve imagined as a kid who had only seen the spiderman cartoons. All of the characters on the cartoons were put to shame in this live-action movie. Still my favorite spiderman movie, but yeah I was a kid wearing spidey underwear at the time too so I mightve been fanboying But to this day I wouldnt say it looks "bad" Id say it looks 2000s

I think its fair to say most people these days don't mind this mask because frankly...we've never gotten anything better. Harry Osborn's suit, while cool, doesn't scream "Green Goblin". The Goblin look for TASM2 is just too bad to go into, and the re-design for NWH is underwhelming. So in hindsight, this mask isn't all bad when you consider it at least tried in some capacity to look like its comic book counter part. But I'm sure that in the near or distant future when we get a faithful adaptation, the flood gates of negativity will open on this Green Goblin look.

I think the reason we got the mask we saw was that it wasn't just how uncomfortable it was to wear it, it was mostly aimed for stuntmen. Dafoe was against it and wanted to wear it himself since he was fully committed to the role. Since it was worse for comfort, we eventually got the unmoving mask.

This mask actually was truly a memory defining, and probablby contributed to make the movie the staple that it still is today' It was scary, sophisticated, and didn't remove one bit of Dafoe's performance. I never heard of any criticism about it, but it fitted way better into the story than a weird prostetic mask. Osborn is a scientist, not a designer. Maybe the mask is too present throughout the movie, and we should have seen more of Dafoe's evil faces, but this mask was legendary to me at the time.

The suit was clunky and bad, but the mask works so well with Dafoe and Raimi. It makes the green goblin formless in a sense since the mask doesn't need someone wearing it to keep it's shape. The green goblin could have left behind Norman and we wouldn't know. It works really well with the way Raimi both makes makes horror and believable camp. Much of the movie straddles that line well. The body armour went full camp, but the mask is great, and a force of nature like Dafoe makes it work.

I think it'd be difficult for them to have those scenes where he "argues" with the mask if it was made of a softer material. The cold, unmoving metal sitting on a table or hanging on a chair gives off a vibe that I don't think would work very well with something like rubber. It also makes him seem more invulnerable, since it's apparently bulletproof material. It wouldn't make sense for him to be easily defeating armed police and military members if his mask wasn't bulletproof. I think the ideal design would be one that folds open, similar to Iron man's helmet, maybe with an articulating jaw or eyebrows, but I like this design more than any of the rubbery, expressive ones.

I like the mask! 1. It looks like something that a madman with engineering skills would come up with. 2. It creates a contrast between Goblin as a tech based villain and Spidey as an organic based hero (once they made his web shooters biological). 3. It set Goblin's look apart from all the foam rubber monstrosities from previous generations of media, like Star Trek and TMNT, which in the early 2000s would have felt super dated and hokey.

I love the mask, and in the movie, we can see Osborn obsession with the weird masks in his studio. The glider suit had no helmet only those googles and some kind of mind scanner. I can see Osborn evolving that to a full helmet which fits with the new more grounded superhero tone. The viewer wouldn't buy Osborn spending 3 hours every time he wants to wear his wearable silicone makeup mask.
