It's just one part of what ruined it, same with Carnage being in a movie not rated R. Yes, a rating shouldn't determine whether or not a movie is good, but when the characters the movie is based on are fundamentally violent at their core (Carnage especially), you are distancing the adaptation more from the source material simply by depriving them of that violence and just giving more reasons why it's bad. Venom doesn't necessarily NEED to be over the top violent, but once Carnage came into the mix, that argument goes out the window... like it's literally his name lol
@LightningAdrianАй бұрын
@@GearsofCoss While you do have a valid point about that, it can still end up being bad if that’s the ONLY thing you change about Venom 2 and nothing else. Also, Carnage has literally appeared in cartoons that are mainly for young audiences. Just thought I might remind you of that.

The fan film "Venom: Truth in Journalism" (2013) by Joe Lynch and Adi Shankar still stands as the only good live-action portrayal of Eddie Brock / Venom. 6:03 - Also, today I learned that in 1997 after Marvel went bankrupt and sold the rights of their characters to various movie studios, David S. Goyer wrote a script for a Venom movie that New Line Cinema was making that was going to focus on Eddie Brock and Cletus Cassidy's rivalry without Peter Parker / Spider-Man in it at all because New Line Cinema only had the rights to Venom and Carnage and it would've starred Dolph "Ivan Drago" Lundgren as Eddie Brock / Venom, but it got cancelled because New Line Cinema did not like David S. Goyer's script and probably also because of the middling reception "Spawn" (1997) movie got and so New Line Cinema eventually sold the Venom movie rights to Sony Pictures who would use Venom in "Spider-Man 3" (2007) movie and Tom Hardy's Venom movies...

I agree with a couple of your points. But saying topher grace venom was 3 feet to small is off in my opinion. People in modern media are conditioned for venom to be this 9ft hulking behemoth. And in doing so lessons the person inside the suit. Venom was big because eddie brock was big. Making venom the size of the hulk takes away so much of the host. In my opinion making venom roughly the same big athletic build of eddie brock would be perfect. Making him 6ft3 260lbs like his original how Todd original made him in his debut. But unfortunately no one will bulk up to play a modern eddie brock when you could just CGI the whole thing. No practical suit to where like topher did. No need to put on muscle and get more in tune with the character . Just CGI the whole damn thing and call it a day. I'd rather have a smaller more personalized venom on the big screen one day than this goofy god forsaken, poorly written slap that we have now. It does no justice for the character of venom when you boil him down to his basic traits of being a big-muscular-jokey-alien-goofball, that looks the same no matter who weres the suit. There is so much story potential for this character, but unfortunately this is what is going to be in the minds of modern fans when they think of venom. Just another big goofy roided out alien idiot. After watching Last Dance and its (un-earned) emotional ending all I could think was "This would be more impactful if any of the movies had been done better." Venom could be amazing, you could even do it with off-screen references to the violence to keep it PG-13 (silhouettes, blood splashes on the walls, screams, etc) but the problem for me was that Eddie Brock stopped being a character. In the first movie, the main parts of it had Eddie trying to deal with this impossible to control power while also still trying to maintain a loving relationship and his life in general. The buddy comedy stuff worked for the most part and it felt like a real struggle that any person suddenly finding themselves in this position would have. By the time Carnage rolled around though, much like Tom Hardy in real life, Eddie Brock had just...given up. He realized he couldn't control this creature so there was no point in trying. His movements, his choices, and Tom Hardy's acting became lifeless. In Last Dance Hardy moves across the screen like a puppet, a man not in control, because he isn't. He's simply a vessel to get Venom to his next step in the plot. It's not until the end where we see this change...and it's disappointing. Maybe we can get a good Venom movie eventually but...only time will tell.

While the Venom movies are very goofy and silly, they can at least be earnestly fun and entertaining nonetheless however, I do wish we could get a genuine Venom movie that dives into Eddie Brock's psychology as this lucky Catholic guy who has the worst luck and resentment for Peter Parker that bonds with he symbiote becoming the black alien menace Venom himself and that interwoven hatred for Peter Parker is what makes Eddie and the symbiote into the perfect bond thus becoming Spiderman's poison, aka Venom. Venom is the personification of Peter's dark ambitions/mistakes, and one thing I always liked about him is that he actually was immune to Peter's Spidey Sense; thus, Peter can never know when Venom is going to attack him, as he could be watching him wherever he goes or jump him when he least expects it and that legitimately scares Peter as it puts both him and his loved ones in danger, and that makes Venom a great villain. Over time, Venom and Eddie Brock have grown to become heroes/anti-heroes. In the comics, it feels more naturally earned as Eddie sees how he lies to himself and is self-destroying to the point where he finds common ground with the symbiote. The two learn to become better people and now Eddie is a father and good friend to Peter which feels satisfying to see how far he's come. It's a shame how much missed potential there was with Venom movies, even if the films are somewhat fun, and the way Sony is insistent on using Venom without establishing Spiderman just felt lacking sometimes when we really could've gotten something a bit more fascinating and psychologically complex in tone and horror. Personally, some of my favourite takes on Venom include Spectacular Spiderman, 90's show and I think Tony Todd was a phenomenal choice to voice Venom in Insomniac Spiderman's 2 game (even though Venom's characterisation in the game was fairly generic and underwhelming)

But they were entertaining and did well with the tone they were going for. But I do hope we get an accurate live action depiction of Venom, and it needs to have Spiderman involved.

They actually are far more comic accurate then most adaptions, the issue is that they adapt Venom's original 90 "run" which is not normally adapted.

I’m a huge Venom fan, I remember being introduced to the character when I was ten and he completely changed my life. (I’m autistic he was special interest for years straight) I was obsessed with Venom and the movies and I bought every venom comic I could. As I got older I saw how the movies didn’t take the characters seriously and was very disappointed by venom 2 and its villains to the point of a near breakdown, I saw venom three last night and although it was bad, I cried so hard at the end because it was like my whole journey with venom from when I was little came rushing back to me at once. I know the movies are not good and as a reader of the comics I do get frustrated with how they portray the character but the first movie will forever be iconic to me no matter how bad it technically is, but I love Venom in any medium he’s in, the movies had an effect on me that will last for the rest of my life

Number 1: you CAN'T make a Venom movie without Spider-Man, and I'm NOT going to listen to any contrived arguments as to why they can. Number 2: Eddie Brock ISN'T a bumbling idiot comic relief guy.. He's a beefcake with serious anger issues and an inflated ego of himself that is only amplified when the symbiote consumes him. 3rd: Venom the character isn't a dad-joke spewing, annoying fat jonah hill type friend, scaredy cat that he is portrayed as in those dreadful movies either. Venom as a character deserves a thoughtful and mature adaptation, one that fully captures the depth, horror, and complexity of Eddie Brock and his symbiotic alter ego. To achieve this, a shift toward an R-rated format-be it a film or a TV series-is not only ideal but necessary. The darker themes inherent in Venom's origin and storylines require a more mature exploration, especially if the character is to stay true to his comic roots. A key aspect of Eddie Brock’s Venom is Spider-Man’s pivotal role in his origin story. Spider-Man is central to Eddie's downfall and transformation, as their intertwined destinies drive Venom's rage and purpose. The symbiote, originally bonding with Peter Parker, amplifies Peter’s darker tendencies before being rejected and finding a host in Eddie, who shares a deep hatred for Peter. This narrative not only builds Eddie's character but also provides the emotional and thematic foundation for Venom. Omitting Spider-Man diminishes the character’s depth and reduces him to a standalone antihero without the necessary layers of motivation. Leaning into horror elements would elevate Venom’s story, particularly through body horror. The visceral transformation that Eddie undergoes while bonding with the symbiote-a fusion of man and alien-lends itself perfectly to terrifying and unsettling visuals. The psychological horror of losing control to a parasitic entity adds another layer of fear, as Eddie struggles with his identity and battles the symbiote’s influence. This approach was hinted at in *Spider-Man 3* but should be expanded upon and logically fleshed out. A proper exploration of Eddie’s descent, his rage, and his eventual bond with the symbiote can create a haunting yet compelling character study. To do justice to Venom, Sony must avoid rushing his story, as they did with *Spider-Man 3*. The symbiote’s journey-from Peter Parker’s initial bond and transformation, to his rejection of it, to Eddie’s eventual bond-requires patient storytelling. Developing Eddie’s character before the symbiote comes into play is essential to make his downfall and subsequent transformation into Venom both meaningful and impactful. Similarly, Peter Parker’s experience with the symbiote, including its effects on his personality and his struggle to rid himself of it, needs to be fully realized to set the stage for Eddie’s journey. An R-rated TV series would be an excellent format for this story, as it allows for the detailed character development that Venom and Eddie Brock deserve. A series could explore Eddie's personal struggles, his professional downfall, and his complex relationship with Spider-Man, all while delving into the symbiote’s horror-inducing influence. If a TV series isn’t feasible, Sony should follow a well-structured film template that carefully builds both Peter and Eddie’s arcs, culminating in Eddie’s transformation into Venom and his evolution from villain to antihero. Lastly, Sony must avoid making Venom a goofy or comedic character. While Venom has moments of dark humor in the comics, his personality is far from comedic. The character should be treated with the seriousness he deserves, leaning into his terrifying and morally complex nature. By embracing an R-rated approach and committing to thoughtful storytelling, Sony can finally do justice to Venom, creating a version that is both true to the source material and resonant with audiences.

It’s impossible to make a good Venom movie without Spider-Man. I wish The Amazing Spider-Man 3 should’ve been released in the fall of 2016. From there we should’ve have Tom Hardy as Venom and by the end of ASM3, they would say that Garfield’s Spidey is taking a break from crime fighting (or by production studios’ case that Garfield’s Peter Parker is out because Spider-Man now appears in the MCU) and now Venom is the one who will continue that path for him.

It’s like having Joker with Batman, Silver Surfer without Galactus, Wolverine without the X-Men, Thanos without the Avengers - nobody cares about origin stories that can’t tell the actual origin story. I don’t need a story on the actual Joker if there’s no Batman to balance the scales. Don’t need a Silver Surfer story if he’s not tied to Galactus. Don’t need a Wolverine story if he’s never met the X-Men, and don’t need a Thanos story if he’s not fighting the Avengers. The problem with Sony is they’re taking all these characters that simply don’t work without Spider-Man, and trying to create universes around them when the star has and always will be Spider-Man.

Venom's problem is that other than Blade and Deadpool, the comic industry thinks R rated/ adult comics just have more sex, violence and swearing. Most 'mature' comic adaptations rarely capture the complexity that the character works. Blade worked because Snipes fought for it and no exec cared about it until it became a hit, and Deadpool works (mostly) because Reynolds fights for the character and there character already has jester qualities.

Venom is probably one of the best Marvel characters ever created. And my favorite. But his connection to Peter Parker is obligatory. Even Insomniac, who didn’t make Venom being Eddie Brock, understood that Peter needs to have it, in order for "Venom" to be created. Venom isn’t a talking parasite. Venom is the bonding between Eddie Brock and the symbiote. Both of them are Venom. There’s no "loser coming from space", that’s a goofy storyline made for the extremely underwhelming films. Peter Parker has to be corrupted by the alien’s power, like a metaphor to drug abuse. We need to see the descent of the character, for when he removes it, an enraged Eddie can, then, bond with an enraged alien. That’s a recipe for an extremely powerful and dark story. Not a comedic one, at all. While Topher Grace’s Venom may not be anyone’s favorite portrayal of the character, it’s still the most truthful. Simply put, Spider-Man 3 should have ended with the black suit being removed, for a 4th film to be entirely dedicated to Venom, because the character deserved more than 10 minutes of screen time. I even found the design to be interesting, with the webbing mimicking Peter’s suit. But yes, physically, Venom should have been bigger and more menacing. As Venom was created in the 90’s, oldschool readers took more time to get accustomed to the character, and many comic book authors still don’t like him much. However, this ‘newer’ generation that grew up in a time where Venom was everywhere, we know the character is obligatory in a good Spider-Man story. We just want the scary, menacing, big, murderous, definitely R-Rated Venom we deserve, on the big screen.

It's impossible because Venom has such a intricate backstory. It´s like trying to cram the Phoenix saga in one movie. For the solo movie they skipped his villain origin and make him a hero, but then it doesn´t make sense why he looks like a monster. I find it off putting Venom murders every opponent he meets, it's such a contrast with the silly antics Eddie Brock/Venom do. I don't mind him killing the big bad, but eating the guy who extorts Mrs Chen is a bit much. It's not what movie Eddie Brock would do. I can't imagine this in rating R where Eddie Brock is so nice that he gives a homeless woman 20 dollars but will also tear off the arm of a SWAT agent.

It is not even impossible, he is such a versatile and moldable character that masterpieces can be made with him, even with the concept of "Symbiote". Now, there are some people who have taken over not only this character, but each and every one of them, and they have a very disoriented and closed vision of them, trying to make things different, but worse. Is it easy for them to do something good? Yes, but the creative team doesn't know how to listen, and doesn't know where they come from or what the characters are like. Too bad, because we had the best actor and the best Venom design. You can see even in the marketing of this third one that they didn't even put any love in it, and not to mention what they did to Carnage...

I think the character of Eddie Brock and the black symbiote are too tied to Spider-Man to not be able to appear together on the big screen. If they could exist in the same cinematic universe where they could interact with one another as well as Venom to be able to do his own thing it would help flesh him out as his own character while still being able to feel like Eddie Brock and at least have some retention of what defined the character in the comics.

Great video! I think one of the biggest issues we've seen so far in these adaptations is them not wanting to give Eddie Brock is due; they just take a few elements but don't look at his, admittedly messy history and use any of his depth. Since I was a kid in the 90s, one thing that kept me interested in Brock was his messy, flexible morals; he'd curse Spidey in one breath & then turn to Johnny Storm & say he & his family are amazing heroes. There's always been some level of humour in the books, but I feel the Hardy movies focus too much on the goofy, married couple aspect & not enough on the horror, despair, & potential toxicity of their union. Also, Eddie Brock is just a schlub but not a man who NEEDS redemption in the movies. I ultimately think Eddie Brock's story is one of messy redemption & finally, like Peter, accepting responsibility. The movies don't ever get us there, in Raimi's he's an entitled douchebag to Gwen & wants revenge on Pete. In the Sony movies, he's a guy who fell backwards into cosmic weirdness, but ultimately is trying to be good; there's no ugliness to them. It's beyond removing Spider-man from their shared origin; he's hollow. Venom villains that always stood out to me were the Jury. Orwell Taylor & his friends hate Eddie Brock because in one of his first appearances, you get Eddie killing a nameless guard at the Vault prison and saying it's unfortunate, but part of his "holy mission against Spider-man. The guard was Hugh Taylor, a beloved Guardsman and son. This was one of those moments where Eddie was confronted with the occasional evil he did; sure he would make sure to go out of his way not to hurt innocent people when fighting Spidey or Carnage, but that didn't change the fact that he's killed, traumatized & maimed people who meant no threat to him. Over the years, things like that haunted him and he stopped hiding behind the idea that the symbiote did it, Donny Cates' run REALLY has him face his past & evolve into a hero. This is getting long, sorry hah, but yeah, Eddie Brock has so many aspects that are left out of these movies & suffer as a result. Eddie's a guy who had a rough start to his life: mom died right after he was born, father abused him so he put everything he had into academics & sports, but still that wasn't enough, so when he started to break the Sin Eater story, his father paid attention & he saw the potential for happiness. I think that was the core of why he ignored journalistic integrity and didn't do his due diligence. From there he would constantly fall, even after thinking the symbiote was the key to happiness, they would have fights and concerns over who's corrupting who, then guy seemingly gets cancer, gives up the symbiote, in his dying days goes to work with Aunt May at F.E.A.S.T., gets turned into Anti-Venom & gets a new lease on life, loses Anti-Venom to stop Spider Island, etc. The guy's led one hell of a life and there's tons to pull from, but the movies only pick and choose & are missing too much of the core, so it fails. That's just my opinion hah.

Why Is It Impossible To Make A Good Venom Movie? Geraneral problems with adaptions: 1. Studios always disrespect the original source material and ignores its most important details. 2. Studios always want to rush things with the plot and skipp important development parts from its source material. 3. Studios always want to rush things so they can fork in major characters- and story events that requires a proper build-up for. 4. Studios want money at all cost, and even when they have guaranteed R-rated material that will sell, they bring it down so they can fork in PG-13 audience = butcher its original intention. 5. PG-13 audience have no patience, nor understand enough its source material so a R-rated source material gets wasted- and/or ruined by them for there quick fix. Venom movie problems: 1. Venom as a character is BUILT around the existence of Spider-Man. For Venom to have his powers and abilities, the symbiote must have been attached to Peter Parker aka. Spider-Man for some time and then after Parker gets rid off it, the symbiote finds Eddie Brock and there shared hatred for Peter Parker aka. Spider-Man grows there ambitions. 2. Venom and Eddie Brock works in a union - the battle for control combined with compromission. Eddie Brock is strong enough to hold his own for the control as long as he feeds the symbiote once-in-a-while and does so by taking out low-life thugs and evil doers = The Punisher's anti-hero style, witch works for the angry, butter Brock who found new purpose as a crime fighting anti-hero with opposite nature of Spider-Man's save-all-at-all-cost code. 3. Venom's greatest rival is Spider-Man, but his greatest foe is Cletus Kassidy aka. Carnage and established early on as unlike Eddie Brock & Cenom who works in a union - Kassidy with Venom's offspring Carnage works as a single-mind with the sole interest in bloody murdering sprees, chaos and cruel suffering as only motivation. While Brock & Venom at times- are in need of dealing with conflicts of interest, Carnage is out of such problems and with Carnage being the offspring of Venom, his powers and resistance is strenghted = further makes Carnage a most evil foe where Brock & Venom develops a shared contempt for Carnage's existance. 4. The Venom comics beside his fights with Spider-Man, are either focused on his many fights with Carnage, or taking on enemies from the Life Foundation OR dangerous murdering criminals like Sin-Eater OR fighting other known Marvel giants like Juggernaut, Rhino, Morbius etc. Or teaming up for a common cause with anti-heroes; The Punisher, Ghost Rider, Wolverine, Hulk etc.

It shouldn't be impossible but Sony MADE it impossible when they started a series about Venom without the reason Venom even came to be in the first place. Hell, even his name wouldn't have existed without Spider-Man, he wasn't a random alien that came down and just said, "Hey venom sounds like a cool name, i'll pick that!" His ENTIRE character and reason for being is centered around Spider-Man and the shared hatred of both Eddie and the Symbiote, scrapping all of that from the start means you are fundamentally failing at depicting this character correctly, and it shows throughout the trilogy.
