A question from one of my Patreon supporters: what was the uniform of the Knights Templar? In this podcast, we discuss the attire of the Templars and the meaning behind it.

Sworn soldiers of Christ, Poor Knights of Christ and of King Solomon's Temple, wore a Cross over their heart. During their first few decades of beggining it was elongated Latin Cross, after time they wore the Croix Formée, followed by Croix Pattée, and early 14th century selected officials of the Order, wore Croix Moline.

Very interesting. Are there any sources explaining specifically where the crosses were located? Were they in the middle of the surcoat as many artists display, or were they smaller and only on the top left corner of the surcoat? There seems to multiple variants displayed, although the one with the cross in the middle is amongst the more popular depictions.

Great question! I believe on their mantle in their regular attire, it appeared on the left shoulder. But when garbed for war in their mail and surcoat, the cross was across the chest.

Real Crusades History I thought the red cross on the chests were for knight and the red cross on the upper left were non-knights.

I've been very interested in the Knights Templar for a while. My father knows much more about Christianity and religious knights than I do, but we've been contentious about this for a while. He says the Templar bore the Cross of Lorraine, the one with two bars on the cross instead of one. I always thought they were under the red single cross. He says that all the images and info about them with the red cross is false history. He says the red cross was used for healers. Could anyone enlighten me on this? Was the lorraine cross their actual emblem and the red cross false or is that what they wore until they were granted the red cross in the 1200s?

In guessing you meant Masonic Knight Templar? Because: A) you would NEVER be able to know if your supposed great granddaddy belonged to the original templars due to them being gone since the 1300s B) photos didnt exist during the time of the original Templars C) theres no way u can trace your family line THAT far back without some ancient proof

The Bible never condemns the actions of a soldier following orders on a battlefield. In fact, the New Testament has examples of soldiers who had faith in God-Jesus commended a centurion’s faith in Matthew 8:10; and another centurion, Cornelius, was saved in Acts 10. These men of war were not rebuked for performing the duties of a centurion, nor were they told they must change professions. Most tellingly, some soldiers came to John the Baptist as he was baptizing in the Jordan River. The soldiers asked John, “What should we do?” This would have been the perfect opportunity for John to tell them to stop engaging in warfare, stop killing, or stop being soldiers. Instead, John replied, “Don’t extort money and don’t accuse people falsely-be content with your pay” (Luke 3:14). Being a soldier is not inherently sinful. Paul uses the soldier life as an illustration of spiritual truth (see 1 Corinthians 9:7 and 2 Timothy 2:3). Other references mention battles and warfare (see 2 Corinthians 10:4 and 1 Timothy 1:18). Ephesians 6 contains an extended comparison of the Christian life and warfare (verses 10-17). If being a soldier (and doing the things soldiers are required to do) were sinful, it is unlikely the Holy Spirit would have used soldiering as a metaphor for anything good.
