Historically this wasn't too uncommon. Until the steam engine age, there was generally little difference between a trade ship and a small - medium warships. Only the largest warships (ships of the line with 3-4 decks of guns) were structerly different. And, even the most peaceful ocean going warship had some canons, as pirates are significantly less cool in real life or in a galaxy far away.

@@jrggrop Yeah, the battleships in Star Wars are, weird when space combat has a WW2 aesthetic. I like to describe them as WW2 battleships, but with only their secondary armament. So, like an Iowa with no 16 inch guns, but just 5 inch guns(turbo lasers) and 40mm anti air guns (laser canons).

Given how unpredictable the countless situations you face in the galaxy can be, it doesn't surprise me that many ships offer huge room for upgrades. Otherwise your ships wouldn't have much appeal to potential buyers. Customization is the theme here. After all, it plays into the realistic "used future" aesthetic of the Star Wars Universe.

This came back to reminds me of the "Space Shimakaze" purposes I had a bit while back. Essentially I would imagine due to its extreme modularity the CR90 can be easily transformed into a fast and manoeuvrable proton torpedo launcher. Given the size of the cargo bay and those two massive turbolasers, one could even fit firepower equivalent to a Y-wing squadron in there. And in practice, This heavy torpedo armed Corvette can either have a squadron of X-wings distract the Tie-fighters while accurately jumps right on top of a Victory and such and just cause excessive damage to the ship, then quickly jumps into hyperspace, or to pretend to be a civilian ship until it got up close. This tactic I think will work well with the alliance's hit and run tactic, and even in fleet battles, multiple such corvettes accompanied by escort could deal serious damage to any capital ship.

The party I used to run SW d20/Saga edition for had a Wayfarer medium transport. It was basically a CEC space Semi trailer. They were working for the Legends New Republic shortly before the Vong War. They eventually convinced CEC to modify the design, basically stacking 2 drive sections together, welding them onto the front of a cargo pod, and putting a hardpoint for detachable pods on either side, they called it the Sojourner. The party [if anyone is interested] was: -Wiley T. Ewok: the group's pilot, he was an escaped test subject from Warlord Zsinj's labs [the one that made Piggy and Gara Petothels co-pilot] -Dac Mason: Corellian Jensaarai on a mission to investigate the post-Empire galaxy -Arctan Voss: Iktochi Tech [the "designer" of the Sojourner refit] -Bernhard Arnhel: Human Dark Side Marauder that Dac took as an apprentice after Goku-ing him [he was a random encounter that the party spared and took as a pet]

In one of my peculiar Empire at War games I was down an entire fleet and only my single CR-90 was left to fight an Imperial Star Destroyer. Through exceptional dodging skills, ample use of turbo boost, and a lot of flanking... this single CR-90 defeated an ISD and a Victory single handedly and saved a Rebel space station. Unfortunately the captain of the CR-90 perished soon after as such antics from said ship were not witnessed again and the ship soon destroyed in a future battle. (IE I got too burnt out whittling down an ISD with a single CR90)

First off... love the channel. The content. The execution. Nicely done. After watching this video I suddenly had a thought that also asks the question "Why so many?" My question? Why are there so many GR-75 transports in rebel fleets during combat. The battle of Endor. The battle of Scarrif? Who would want to go into battle on an unarmed transport? Any ideas? I have only one answer myself. A death wish.

If I was a pirate I would have my capitol shop be a cis recusant class destroyer, with several stolen cr90 corvettes, a victory ii, a nebulon b and C, and I would have a quasar class, probably filled with droid bombers, stolen tie fighters, and t17 torrents. My personal fighter would be a geonosian starfighter. The way I would get ships is by sitting on hyperspace lanes and boarding suspecting new rebulic scum.

Rebel doctrine pertaining to the CR90 reminds me of early American naval doctrine. Where merchant vessels would be outfitted with cannons and after the war, returned to their regular tasks. Not to mention the use of gunboats which were favored by Congress as they were inexpensive, quicker to produce, and could run heavily armed (relative to the size of the ship).

My ship would be a raider class corvette it’s a similar size with somewhat less weaponry but it has hanger space for 4 ties and if your a rebel and add racks of a sort you could fit at least 6 a wings maybe 8 or maybe 2 x wings and 4 a wings. I think that the fact that it comes with a hanger and some decent firepower makes it great right out of production but imagine what you could do if you modified it I feel that if you did it right you could double it’s default firepower because of that I like it more that the CR-90

A CR90 - with a hangar added (without the Die-Fighters or if it has fighters then Droid-Tri-Fighters that can be launched when under attack!) - would make an ideal starter ship! You can carry cargo, passengers and most pirates would think twice about attacking you (note: Why do I not want fighters? Because those require crew, while a single person can operate a CR90 with droids (a few astromechs to do maintenance and a droid-brain to help fly the ship and operate the weapons and some B1s and B2s for defense while the ship is on the ground (wouldn't want it to get stolen like my beloved Ebon Hawke was in KOTOR2!))

I never understood why they never put another set of cannons on the sides of the forward cockpit. Doing so would give you 4 forward-facing weapon emplacements each with 2 barrels each with all of them having a clear field of fire firing that would not interfere with any of the others

Love the corellian designs. As a capital ship the CR-90 was my go to. Back in the revised edition of the RPG (WotC) I managed to fit enough firepower into one that I could and did go toe to toe with star destroyers. All legal too, as in within the rules of the Starships of the Galaxy book. Granted she cost a pretty penny (3 mil iirc), but worked great as a homebase for the group.

CR90 has always been one of my favourites and would be an awesome ship to have as an independent. I think my first choice would be the VCX-100 though, much smaller and easy to manage (and pay) crew, that incredible CEC modularity to make as dangerous as you want and big enough to be comfortable in, my only criticism of the YT-1300 is it is very cosy for more than 2 people the VCX has extra living and cargo space.

I would imagine that the empire would have used Corrilian designs as patrol ships and anti-pirate for worlds near to Corellia and possibly further abroad. Not for the mainline navy, but for smaller scale tasks that needed to protect less important worlds and of the sort that might occasionally be drafted into protecting ISD's during local missions. Sort of like other patrol ships like the Tartan-class, Arquitens-class , and Gozanti-class. I would imagine that locally produced ships of all kinds were in use to save lugging replacments and other supplies across the galaxy when a locally designed patroler might be just as sufficient for sub-star destroyer tasks.

This is like asking why so many African or middle Eastern rebels have so many 'Technicals', aka Toyota Pickup trucks with machine guns mounted in the bed, or why Somalia pirates used speed boats and fishing trawlers. They are simply pressing into service the cheap, common vehicles they have at hand. The CR-90 is just that common that it can be purchased or stolen easily, likewise many independent merchants, diplomats, business people (*cough* Pirates *cough*) and groups have them and when they join the Alliance they bring the ships.

CEC is a definite standard of quality for independents in the Star Wars universe. I think, starting off, a trader would aspire to one of their light freighters, with the eventual goal of something like a CR90. However, cost would be a major factor in who can get one. A Corvette is a pretty major investment for a private company. Not only do you need a dedicated crew for the thing, but you need at least enough credits to finance a loan to buy one, plus wages for said crew and maintenance needs as well. It's about the same size as a Falcon DeLacy Anaconda from the game Elite (and its sequels), but with more compact hyperdrive tech. A CR90 fitted for freight could supply a colony in a single trip for months if planned carefully. That's a substantial amount for a tramp freighter.

If I was operating any kind of small group in SW, I would definitely use the CEC YZ-775. It's about 1/3rd the size of a CR-90 but packs a lot of firepower and similar modularity to all the other CEC ships. Personally I'm a fan of smaller ships and crews so the smaller YZ fits my needs well.
