Argentina has tried time and again for well over a century to move the capital away from Buenos Aires. The two most serious sets of attempts were in the 1860s-1870s (when the major interior city of Rosario was proposed multiple times, only for the president to veto it all those times) and in the 1980s (when the Patagonian near-coastal city of Viedma was proposed by the then-president).

Moving the capital of South Korea from Seoul to Sejong, a new city built from almost scratch, was the brainchild of the government in power some years ago to relive Seoul's legendary congestion. Well, a lot was built down there and several ministries actually were moved down there, but the employees who were relocated did not move their families for the most part. Living in Seoul is what all Koreans aspire to, it has all of the nightlife, all of the best schools, all of the top universities, in short, EVERYTHING. Relocating to the provinces is considered a huge step down in the ultra-competitive society that is the modern Republic of Korea. So, while employees' jobs were moved there, the employees themselves, who went there to work kicking and screaming, either commuted each day from their Seoul homes, which can take a few hours each way, or they rent tiny apartments for themselves in Sejong while the families stayed in Seoul, and the traffic northbound on Friday night and the traffic southbound on Sunday night or (more commonly) early Monday morning is indescribable. As soon as the opposition party took power the move was abandoned/greatly decelerated, but those ministries which did relocate, at least in part, stayed.

The USA moved it's capital from Philadephia to Washington D.C. China moved it's capital from Nanjing to Beijing and Japan moved it's capital from Kyoto to Tokyo.
@francishong79487 ай бұрын
The case for China is somewhat of a misconception. It’ a complete change of regime rather than “moving the capital”. Beijing has been the capital from the Yuan Dynasty (then named Dadu) till beiyang period of the republic of china. Then Chiang Kai-shek had success in the northern expedition and changed the capital of the KMT controlled government from Guangzhou to Nanjing, which is another historically important city. It remained the capital of the ROC up until recently when they officially changed it to Taipei. On the other hand, the CCP never really had Nanjing as their capital but rather changed it several times based on their controlling area, from Ruijin at the start to Yan’an and finally Beijing after they consolidated power. Calling all this mess a “move in capital” would be a bit weird as the two regimes coexisted for a long time throughout this mess of a period with various different capitals, and I’m not even taking the 20+ warlord capitals into account. And unlike pretty much every other example of the actual same government moving to another place, Beijing has always been the more populous and important city throughout the time, and the reason behind it is more of “it’s a more convenient place for my own government to control” instead of actual benefits. And Nanjing kinda remained Taiwan’s capital for a long time, making it more clear that it’s not an intentional change of capital like what the video is mainly about

Fun fact: Philippines capital city was moved briefly from the City of Manila to the young and newly founded Quezon City (which now a part of the Metropolitan Manila area and also the biggest and richest city) during the 1948 (under President Elpidio Quirino) until the early 60’s under President Macapagal which makes sense before since majority of the government offices are located in Quezon City even in 2024.

Another reason why Brazil changed their capital to Brasilia was because due to European powers, the eastern coastal regions were more developed than the Western provinces which were just forests. Due to low development and facilities in the central and eastern regions, they moved their capital to Brasilia in order to develop the centre and the east and also attract new investment which was part of their 'Go West' Policy

Spain moved its capital in the 1500s to Madrid because in Toledo the Archbishop had too much power, and also King Felipe II wanted to build a very big city the Toledo coulndt become due to it already having a very defined urban structure, meanwhile, Madrid was a little town where the King had some hunting grounds, so it became the new capital and transformed into the city it is today over time.

Another reason why Indonesia moved it's capital because there's recently founded earthquake fault near Jakarta that called baribis fault The Baribis Fault (Indonesian: Sesar Baribis) is a geological feature located in the northern part of Java. This fault, estimated to be 100 kilometers (62 miles) long, stretches from Purwakarta to Lebak Regency and is a threat to the Jakarta metropolitan area because the fault is partially located within the metropolitan area itself.
