I love the phrase “Tuition Reel” if I apply that term to my career than I basically went to Harvard university. I learn from every video. Thank you for going to the trouble to put them together

Too bad! I’ve been on a roll with three great reels in a row - Daiwa 8300, Airex Larchmont, and a Mitchell/Browning 488 Sport. At the same time I’ve had my share of failed tuition reels. Some of my fails this year have included a Ryobi Powerful No. 4, a True Temper 747, and a Jorgensen 616. I learned a lot from those failed reels. It is never a total loss (although I rarely feel that way at the time.) - Chris

Every now and then, the tuition is worth it! Thanks Chris. Glad to hear you are on a roll - Dennis

Hey Dennis, Thank You for another outstanding instructional video! One method that I have tried successfully to remove a frozen sleeve is to use an ultrasonic cleaner. The ultrasonic cleaner seems to break up the rust into tiny particles that tend to work their way out from between the sleeve and the post. I realize that in this instance it may not be worth the effort but sometimes there can be an emotional attachment to the reel or other reasons to keep it original. Thanks again for all of your wisdom that you pass along. Take Care!

Ouch... salt water really eats away at anything it touches, especially if left over time to do as it likes. When the reel was put away it was probably still working fine. Next season, this is what you end up with.

Hello from Australia. I love your videos Dennis, they are really informative and have helped me fixed a number of reels that probably would have hit the trash otherwise! Do you know what the difference is between the Sea Line reels ending in H? The non-H models seem to come in gold finish and can be switched to left or right side. Have you come across many 'non H' Sea Lines?
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle Жыл бұрын
I believe that the H was initially meant as an indicator for High Speed. I have not seen the reels without the H designation in this series. The originals had a black aluminum frame. The later models were made in black and gold - Dennis

As always, great video. When I moved out to Northern California in the late 1970s I was pretty much a freshwater fisherman. It was sometime in the early 1980s when I was introduced to offshore fishing for Salmon. My first saltwater reel was a Diawa High Speed. I have no idea what model I have. My guess is a Sealine 20. The only information I have is the line capacity. 20lb.- 280 yards, 25lb.-220 yards. The reel is in excellent condition externally but I would like to examine the internal parts to clean/grease and to see if it needs parts that might be worn or damaged. Can parts for this reel still can be found?

The parts are hard to find, but items like the drag washers and springs are still available. I have a few if you find you need them I will see if I can match them up - Dennis

@@2ndChanceTackle Thanks for getting back to me. Sometime this week I should be able to do a service. The reel looks exactly like the one in the video except smaller. I stopped using it after a large fish spool me out back in the 80s. I'll keep in touch.

have you ever tried electrolysis to loosen or remove rust?

I soaked a very crusty seized plumbing valve in CLR for 1/2 hour, tried turning it again after the soak and it turned easily. Maybe something like that would work here.

I have not. I need to learn more. Have you used the approach? On the soaking with CLR, I have used that and have had mixed results
@surfcat2051
@surfcat2051 Жыл бұрын
Soaking that bridge in CLR or some other solvent would have been my first approach. The the heat and force you put on the gear shaft was obviously more than it was designed to take. You can always look for a used bridge plate etc. Those are nice reels. Since it was free or very cheap you're still ahead of the game.

@@2ndChanceTackle I have not, but it seems very simple and cost effective. the KZbin videos make it look easy anyway. Not that it works or that I actually searched, I haven't seen anyone using it on fishing reels or parts yet. Just guessing It could be another tool that can become handy in the shop.
@surfcat2051
@surfcat2051 Жыл бұрын
@@secretbassrigs from what little I have seen with that process I think you can remove surface rust but the oxidation btw the sleeve and shaft would not likely be reduced to any significant degree. Like I said that is based on what I have seen.

if the post wasn't too badly pitted this would be an easy fix, but is still boils down to if the reel is worth the extra time, or cheaper to replace the part if available, if not, parting it out would recoup your cost of the reel
