Dudes. You need to step back a little. Remember the phrase "out of time". When Marty goes back in time, he is removed from 1985. Even though his actions in 1955 change things in his present time, he is still yet to return to his present time. Marty is behind the ripples, rather the epicenter. He is the cause to effects that happen in the future, where he is not. The question is, what happens to someone who is out of time? Is everyone's knowledge of them suspended until they return? Does "someone" else take your place in your absence? Oh man, I think my brain just took a shit in my skull.

When my wife and I watch a movie, one or both of us usually points out mistakes (just for fun). But when my wife gets a big one, I'll jokingly say "Oh, you just have to ruin everything you know that?" So don't ruin it. You did a good job. You brought up a few things I hadn't thought of. Yes, I wouldn't hire the guy that sexually assaulted my wife. And no matter how much I liked it there (rich or poor) I'd probably move away from that high elec. tower behind the house. But if you take just two things into consideration, they made lots of people laugh, and they made lots of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ doing it, then they got everything absolutely spot on.

@Saoirse McLeod If Marty is still the same even in the better 1985 that means that there are an infinite number of possible timelines and when Marty changes the past the only thing that he's doing is hoping through different timelines but his physical body is linked with whatever events happend in that timeline which explains why he was fading out of existence but at the same time didn't retain the memories whenever he was in a different timeline

My theory always was that Marty's personality didn't develop the way it did because of his parents, but in spite of it. If you think of it, everyone in the original family is a weird loser, but him. I'm sure George and Lorraine used the same methods in his up-bringing they used on his older siblings. However, somehow Marty realised that his siblings and his parents are 'idiots' so he conciously started to develop his own personality. And in 1955, he managed to pass all that to his parents, so in the alternate timeline, the alternate Marty got the up-bringing he needed to become the same person as the original Marty. Does that make sense? :D

I've always assumed Marty's backstory to be something along the lines of this: Back in elementary school, young Marty and his friends pass by Doc's house one day, and they start telling wild tales about Doc being a "mad" scientist. Eventually they dared Marty to go inside Doc's lab, to which Marty, after being called "chicken", reluctantly does. He doesn't see Doc at first, but Doc watches Marty gaze in wonder and curiosity around the lab. He confronts Marty, and Marty, having just heard all those wild made-up tales about Doc from his friends, starts to either put up a fight or run away. But Doc sees potential in Marty, and maybe a bit of himself, so he kinda takes Marty under his wing. Over the years, he teaches Marty things his parents never taught him, like how to stand up for himself. He was almost like a second Father to Marty. (That backstory kinda sounds better in my head. It doesn't translate as well to writing.) TLDR: Marty is so different from his family, and he has such a strong friendship with Doc, that I've always assumed that he turned out so differently BECAUSE of his friendship with Doc. At some point when Marty was a kid, he met Doc, and Doc took him under his wing and helped shape him into the man he became. (Sorry for the long comment, I just wanted to share my thoughts about this with other people.)

My theory was that George McFly, being a successful science fiction author, might have been involved in the creation of Star Trek and Star Wars. I know it states in the film that this is his first novel but he could have written short stories for Science Fiction pulp magazines which were popular in the 50s and 60s. It's not too out there, Roddenberry might have talked to George who could have planted the idea of Vulcan as the name of Spocks home planet and later maybe he chats to a young George Lucas too.

That would be a good explanation for George's apparent wealth. As you pointed out, this book was his first novel, but he was already wealthy enough that he had the BMW and the fancier trimmings on the house. All of that wealth had to come from somewhere.

Read a theory decades ago (I think it was in Starlog magazine) that there was a Marty from the 'rich' (end of movie) reality, and he knew and assisted Doc Brown in his reality as well. But because Doc was aware of what happened to the Delorean he made sure to have extra plutonium stored in the car prior to the experiment, and since the other Marty owned and drove the 4x4 truck he was a much better driver. As a result, he goes back to 1955, managed to avoid running over the baby pine tree, finds a safe place, re-fuels the Delorean, and immediately returns to 1985. But because he did not stick around long enough to change any other history - the Twin Pines Mall still exists, his parents met the way it was explained in the beginning of the movie, Doc Brown is shot dead by the Libyan terrorists, and the other Marty now finds himself in the original 1985 that our Marty left behind.

So sad though. He's probably wondering what he did wrong to timeline, when knows he did everything right. This isn't the family he remembers. They're idiots! Not to mention his mentor is dead. Without an heir, Doc's equipment will probably be sold at auction. Somebody else will get his hands on Doc's time traveling notes. Perhaps someone not as altruistic about time travel?
@anthonykelly7248

What about this idea? In the movie, Marty adjusted the time machine to arrive back in 1985 a few minutes earlier than he agreed, and was able to watch himself get chased and go back in time. So what if, Marty actually returned to his original timeline, where the new 1985 actually didn't start forming until after Marty saw himself vanish back in time. For example, when Marty ran over to Doc's body and started crying, it was a minute or two before Doc got up. So perhaps it is possible that ALL Marty's start out with the loser version of his family and then come home to the successful version.

Anthony Kelly but then he should have some kind of memories from it...even if it’s foggy or slowly coming in...but he doesn’t...if he did then it would have shown through the second and third movies...what I really want to know though is if Marty came to the alternate 1985 and Biff thought he was in Switzerland...was there two Marty’s in the alternate 1985 at that point??

@@anthonykelly7248 the problem I see with that theory is the proof the timeline has already changed. Marty arrived at the Twin Pines Mall at the beginning of the film to help Doc. Well, without getting into why Marty is still the same, or the recent comments from Bob Gale filling the "why don't they remember him?!" plot hole: I imagine it took some time for George to become a successful writer. His main gain from Marty was confidence, but that doesn't mean instant success. I'd bet that he and Lorraine bought the house before he reached success with his writing. There's no pictures of him and it had been 30 years so they may have kind of remembered what he looked like but not really. He was only there for a week and although he did all that influential stuff they surely remembered him but didn't remember what he looked like exactly. Also I don't think it's that bad but they live in the same house. The parents may have bought that house when they first got married and the family just grew up there. My grandparents still live in the house my dad grew up in. I think people moved less back then. Just because you make more money doesn't mean you have to buy a bigger house

I was under the impression that there was another Marty in an insane asylum or that he'd been killed by Biff in the dark time line. but it's not unusual for the traveller to be uneffected by the changes as they are protected from them. Some people speculate there is a Marty missing from the timeline he has an intact truck. the one with the proper memories of his family for that timeline is just missing seemingly. But Doc does the same thing too - he hops around and is uneffected too. Not that I really want to try to disentangle the timeline in the BTTF movies as though I do get it in a broad sense - the very fine gritty detail is likely to give you a headache. It's like asking if a John Connor exists that doesn't have Kyle Reese as his dad.

There's this french youtuber called Le Tropeur which speculated that the traveler was slowly affected by the timeline change. That Marty was slowly changing his personality based on the new timeline, he didn't stayed long enough in the nightmare 1985 to start to become like the Marty of this timeline, but the fact that he stayed a while in the timeline where he's the son of a rich and confident man created the "Nobody calls me chicken" character trait.

Not that he any reason to vanish as he was still born as normal. But then there is the other question of which version of Marty the 2015 one is - as that one seems to be a product of the timeline Doc removed Marty from - so he never time travelled. which suggest his Doc was shot dead by the Libyans.

Loraine met Doc. Brown in 1955, and would've remembered he's a scientist, so once she found out George was a nerd, why wouldn't she have introduced them, and why wouldn't they have stayed in touch? If Marty's such a nice name, why isn't his older brother called Marty in the new timeline? The book George received in the mail was the author's copy, which means it's _just_ been published. It's probably not even on shelves yet. The whole 'chicken' thing was explained really well in another video I saw. Basically, this version of Marty would've been brought up with the mindset of not letting anyone bully him or call him names, which is why he gets so upset at being called 'chicken' in II (and 'yellow' in III).

By the way, in the 4th draft script, Marty says to Susy (yeah, Jennifer was supposed to be named Suzy at first, no idea why they changed the name though) that Doc went directly to his home, and hired him to sweep out his garage. He also gave him an offer he couldn't refuse : 50 bucks a week, free beer, and total access to his record collection. In other words, he wanted to hire Marty in particular, and knew exactly what to offer him to get him to accept. What I'm wondering is why the heck would Emmett Brown even have a record collection. Unless he collected them for Marty. Okay, maybe it's a bit of a stretch but we've been stretching this whole time so, you know, what the hell. Anyway, Dr. Brown didn't meet Marty, he seeked him. Him in particular. From what Marty told Suzy, Doc came to find him a few years before the day Marty went back in time. Weird, right ?

A long time ago (having seen the movie in 1985), I pondered the notion.... "But what about that version of Marty we saw go back to 1955 at the end of the movie? He would have grown up in 1985B, where there was no story about Lorraine falling for George through him being hit by a car, and her helping nurse him back to health. So.... he would have reacted completely differently, and things would have played out differently the 'third' time, resulting in 1885C, with an even different outcome, and (assuming he didn't fail to get his parents together and thus cease to exist), this cycle would keep repeating...." *head explodes* I had to just accept that either that has to do with alternate/infinite universes, or some other hand-wavey just-so story, in order to make it work.

@schmeedpeterson9627

Exactly! Remember it can't be both. When new present Marty, ending part 1 which also starts part 2, goes to the future with Doc and Jennifer to save their kids from trouble there is an older Marty, as well as an older Jennifer, in that future who has had an accident and could no longer play the guitar. This old Marty couldn't have existed since that was in the same future of this new present. It's like if you travel to next week, assuming you remain in this same universe, everything that your person would have had set in place for next week will no longer be, including your existence because you didn't stay in the present to subsequently end up in "next week." All you did was skipping all events of this week. To that future and its inhabitants you would have had vanished a week ago, remaining as you are today for a whole week and showed up to them, again as you are today, the same as when you would have vanished. Just like when doc sent the dog a couple of minutes ahead in part 1. They didn't have 2 dogs when the dog arrived later,_to the dog's perspective (_ but he came back to their perspective) he just skipped ahead in time... For this alone definitely not also having an older of the same character who has "timejumped" with them in that future.. One could possibly, logically, reasonably think going back to the past you can possibly be there both you and your old self in the same universe since that history is already set as it is reasonable to believe that time is experienced linearly. You could possibly be watching, witnessing your younger self doing all you have already done. But going to the future shouldn't work this way...Unless it's not the future of the same universe. What we see in part 2 is an old Marty from a different universe whom young Marty encounters in that future. It's an older Marty of a different universe who may have had been to a 1955, possibly the same 1955 (see my other response explaining how the time spawned a new timeline from each single point he initiates a jump... from the present in this case) but never took a trip to the future. Hence this Marty remained in that present there becoming "a" future, older Marty when a different Marty comes from the past (present in this case) of a different universe. So there isn't an older Marty either in the young Marty's universe, our Marty, because he didn't stay in the present of his own universe to make that happen. Which would also raise the question "why bother changing that future?" Since it is not the future of his own universe. Cause that would not change anything in his own future where his kids would be in trouble.🤔

@WhiteG60
@WhiteG60 4 ай бұрын
@@txdomino There are two Docs and two Martys in every timeline. At the end of BTTF1, Marty sees himself get in the Delorean and leave. In BTTF2, Marty sees himself from a distance in 1955, 1985 and 2015 and is talked about existing in 1985c (Biff Version). Doc talks to 'himself' in 1955 when 1955 Doc is setting up the wire and asks 1985 Doc for the screwdriver. There's no 2nd Doc in 2015 because Doc was already an adult in 1955. Doubtful the second Doc is still alive in 2015, so the 1985a Doc says he got work done to extend his lifespan. The only REAL hole, then, is that Jennifer effectively disappears from 1985b timeline altogether, meaning there's a 1985d where Jennifer just vanishes and the Marty that left in the Delorean at the end of BTTF1 gets home later in the morning of BTTF2 without Jennifer. Obviously he never marries her. Marty's parents see Marty and Jennifer looking at the truck and talking while standing at the door, and then presumably go back to their morning. So Marty from 1985b gets back from 1955, he gets home and everyone is asking where Jennifer is and what he did with her. The other possible explanation is that there's infinite universes. Eric Stoltz Marty is one universe, MJF Marty/Claudia Wells Jennifer is another and MFJ Marty/Elizabeth Shue Jennifer is yet another. So what we're seeing in BTTF2 is similar events happening in that third universe. What Marty and Doc (and Biff) have been doing isn't changing the future. They're simply going to one of an infinite number of universes where what they did simply is always what they did. Since there's infinite universes, every single action, every single person takes every single day has an infinite number of alternate versions where they did things slightly differently. 1985b Marty could have been out all night watching American Orgy at the local theater for all we know.

when Marty changes something in the past, it takes some time for it to affect the future, a very slow ripple effect, it takes him a week to start to vanish, the way i see it, after spending some time in the new 1985 the time ripple eventually caught up to him and this is why he has anger issues in the 2nd and 3rd films

The fact is we never really see Marty’s childhood. Marty, out of his family, was already seemingly the one who was most normal or put together. His family isn’t rich, but they’re not poor either. It’s not unfathomable that the same Marty in this timeline,who’s the youngest of three children, wouldn’t be drawn to an eccentric man like the Doc Brown as an escape from his mundane everyday life. I think the whole reason that they didn’t leave their house was because Marty’s father wasn’t a best-selling author yet. That book was his first major hit during which they would’ve been taking better care of the little house that they had rented and perhaps even bought it. It took a lot of time and effort to become What we see at the end of the movie. While their lives may have improved because of changes in their relationship with each other and George’s increased confidence, it was a lot of little subtle things that caused small changes and made major improvements. It took years of hard work for George to get to the level that he was at. During that time he had a loving relationship with Lorraine that wasn’t based off of an accident. Lorraine was a more loving and happy individual Who honestly loved George because of the man he was and not out of circumstance.In the process of this all their two oldest kids learned what hard work was and how to have a real loving relationship. This lead to themselves becoming different people. Their daughter in seeing that her parents had a more genuine, real relationship learned what real love was. She saw what a confidant man her father was and never developed some of the insecurities she previously had which were similar to those her father had before he met Marty. She became more confident in herself which in turn would allowed to success in other venues such as her career and have proper relationships in her own right. Their oldest son grew up seeing the hard work George was putting into his writing and developed a similar work ethic taking him from fast food to the office.

IF Marty B does not interrupt Marty A in 1955, his parents will have the same future BUT which Marty would get to use the lightning now? How does Doc store 2 time machines in his barn this time? Do Marty's just keep piling up in 1955? Going back to just Marty A and Marty B, if they both drive their time machines side by side toward the cable and they both go home to 1985 at the same time, now there would be 2 Marty's in 1985 BUT one of them would leave in the morning with Doc and go missing for 30 years while one Marty remained with a time machine.

I know we're not supposed to think too hard and just enjoy the ride on these movies but it's always been something i've wracked my brain over. See, I was always wondering how the 'two marty' theories worked out but then I played Bioshock infinite and it kind of gave me a idea on how changing the time line could possibly work in Back to the Future. I was thinking that changes could happen to the timeline all at once at the point the person goes back in time because that still has to happen. So Marty sees himself go back in time in B2tF1 and in my theory everything was the same as before he left, TILL the Delorean left but the instant he did, the timeline instantly changed both the past and present to incorporate the changes marty made. Doc having a bulletproof vest and him having new parents/new car. BUT the movie is full of inconsistencies so my theory doesn't really work. Marty and Doc, I normally would assume were exempt from changes due to them being the instigators of said change and/or using a time machine, BUT now that I think of it, the telltale game debunks this idea as Doc's future self gets overridden inside the Delorean at the end of ep 1 when the past changes despite that not happening to Marty or him in any of the movies. Not to mention 2015 Bif fades away when he returns from changing the past in 1985.......which also doesn't make sense as if he changed the past he couldn't have returned to the 2015 Marty and Doc were in because that timeline would have changed but the plot needed him to get the car back to them as they would be stuck in 2015 without it IDK.

The Vulcan thing isn't actually as much of a plot hole as it seems to be, as the name "Vulcan" didn't originate with Star Trek. Not only is it the name of a Roman God, but in the 1800s it was theorised that there was a planet closer to the Sun than Mercury and it was given the name "Vulcan" while they looked for it. The chances that doc had a sniper rifle he made himself specifically to shoot Marty’s rope down means Marty had to have died & doc corrected the murder. Also when he threw the rope down to Marty in btf 2 when biff was about to run him over, there’s no way doc knew he’d be at that exact spot unless Marty already died from it & doc corrected or altered it. It’s all docs fault lol. Also in #2 doc knew the exact moment the rain was going to stop meaning he’s been there,.-& he left Jennifer in an alley... he probably made a call to the cops or something to get Jennifer to see her future & learn from it. That’s docs whole thing! He needed Marty to experience everything physically to stop him from getting so easily angered by being called chicken & loose everything. It’s no coincidence that doc knew Marty was trapped by biff on the roof with a gun to him. Biff must of already shot & killed Marty, doc went back real quick & saved his life as Marty jumped off the edge of that building.

memories are funny your mind begins to make them more than they are. the longer time you go without refreshing that memory with the real person you get a totally different person in your mind. they could look at Calvin Cline in the present and think he was the one they knew as kids. even if they made friends with him they only knew him for 6 days and then 30 years passed. its like a big football game where you scored touchdowns in that won you the championship back in high school and got you into college where you fell in love with your future wife.... you would remember the game for those touchdowns but you won't remember the face of the guy you tackled at the goal to make your winning touchdown. you won't remember the name brand of the ball used... you won't remember the food you ate just before the game... those are minor details in your life not what was important. to Marty's parents they remember 5 important things. Biff's bullying, George overcoming his fear, the dance where they first kissed, the advice that George got (which he thinks came from Darth Vader), and the popularity the self confidence brought. they downplayed Calvin's involvement as being just the best friend that flaked when they needed him most. they didn't judge him afterward but George was the one that came through for Loraine and found his confidence when confronting Biff. If you listen closely in the future they even give credit for them getting together to Biff and not Calvin. Calvin became some kid that they never saw again thinking that he didn't really care. Loraine named the kid Marty after George's great great great grand uncle who was stabbed in the belly in Virginia city in the mid 1800's. the memory of the name Marty didn't stick it was just in her subconscious. all you kids in your mid 20's keep thinking there is no way they forgot him... get back to me when your 47 and we will see if you can remember someone you knew 30 years ago for 6 days... bet you can't even remember their hair color. once you hit the age of 30 your memories start to fade. George probably thinks aliens are real and the sci fi we had that shared the same names of the characters and planets are all being influenced by those aliens. He changed the names of the things he experienced so that the aliens wouldn't come melt his brain. as for the Marty thing... time didn't catch up to him yet... the ripple effect left him as the old Marty when he came back. according to the time it took old biff to vanish in part 2 after he came back forward 30 years to return the time machine to Doc and Marty... it took 8 hours for the change. Marty came back from the past at 2 am to see Doc shot... when he went back to his house he fell asleep and woke up at 8 am to catch Dave and Linda eating breakfast before going to the office and George and Loraine coming home from their 6 am tennis match... 2 am to 8 am that's 6 hours. 2 hours later the poor Marty's memories would have been rewritten so that he is now rich Marty and he will not have remembered the times he was poor... that's why at the end of part 3 when he comes home and see's his family he utters the line "Thank God your all back to normal again." even tho they are the rich version. history has to cement itself in place via that ripple effect and 30 years takes 8 hours for the ripple to reach. that solves that mystery.

There are only two timelines, and two Marty’s. Marty A rides a skateboard, is somewhat athletic. He goes back into the past, runs to chase down his father and rescue his father from being hit by his grandfather. He sets into motion the events that lead to Timeline B. Marty B is born in this timeline. He is rich, and owns a pickup truck. He travels into the past at the end of the movie. Since he drives a truck around, he isn’t as athletic as Marty A. Doesn’t arrive in time to save his father from being run over by his grandfather, so Timeline A is reset, and Marty B ends up back in the future of Timeline A. Marty A creates Timeline B, and ends up in Timeline B. Marty B creates Timeline A, and ends up in Timeline A. Marty B gets screwed.

I'm going to just say... no I think the reason marty didn't change was because, ok it works like this marty remembers the old timeline (his original life where he hadn't influenced his parents) and everything was just bad and the reason he remembers is because he was the one who traveled through time and therefore was left un effected meanwhile after meeting, befriending, and helping his parents he change the future to be better because he helped them become better people and therefore made his family successful (this movie also plays a lot on the bootstrap paradox) and so there was no "Marty B" because to everyone else there's only been 1 marty and also he was gone during the time of the timeline change example in Back to the future 2 when they leave marty's (was she his girlfriend or just a friend? anyway) when they leave her behind Marty asks what's going to happen and shouldn't they go get her and Doc replies "No everything is fine everything will return to normal as though none of this happened" and I think it's the same case for everything else it's just Marty had an affect that changed everything around him except for himself.

so after rewatching all 3 films I can say without a doubt that 1. marty's life changed because he helped his dad stand up to Biff and therefor not go into poverty due to being pushed around. 2. the only one Doc could've interferred with was saving marty from the tunnel or anything from the future as he states he was in 2015 for 4 days. and 3. it's a great movie series it stays consistent and follows through with the logic it sets up very well. bonus 4. because Marty told the original Doc about what would happen in the future (he will build a time machine, he will die, and that he goes back again and has to find doc in 1885) this means that the whole time Doc had some clue about everything that was going to happen.

Well, here's the thing guys....when you create a time machine, the first thing you MUST do, is protect the time machine. That means, you must orchestrate an event to bootstrap the timeline so that the time machine ALWAYS gets created, and that you ALWAYS have it get created. This means, yes, Doc Brown orchestrated the entire thing. This is why Doc never went back into the past himself, because he knew that he couldn't be the first one to do it....it had to be a controllable third party, that way it gets him to build it and gives him the person to create the static point in time. It's easier to use a poor guy in the middle of copy-paste street with not a lot of future potential because if a severe change happens, it is less drastic and far less "famous" (less eyes on you means less eyes on the machine). So he picked his target, befriended him by a myriad of audio equipment, and had him sent into the past.....the "new marty" still has the same love for music, so he probably still played to those same qualities and provided him with that escape. The other idea is that it takes time for time itself to catch up, as seen by the disappearing brother from the photo....and marty does eventually change his behavior (and doesn't hit that car which ruined his future). We never got to see his full mental change by the end of the third movie, but it was slowly hinting toward it.

My theory is if you're ripping off something from another timeline, such as the "Darth Vedar from Vulkan" and the other stuff, then something else would have been created in its place in the new timeline. Just like you can't kill your grandpa paradox, once you take something from one timeline, something else would take its place. A lot of new ideas tend to happen around the same time anyway so someone skating on a board and then someone making it even more popular a few years later wouldn't be too far fetched.

Big question I have is part of the problem in bttf3 is the DeLorean runs on gas and Mr Fusion only powers the time circuits. Why can’t Mr Fusion power everything Doc needs in order to invent fuel. What does Mr fusion power in the future? Wouldn’t it be electric cars. That would seem obvious. Doc should have had his car remodded with an electric engine while he did the hover conversion.

I actually thought that's what this video was about. I have my own theory on that, but in general I think there's a lot of "self preservation" going on in the BTTF universe. In other words, the reason the room is the same, and his parents don't recognize him is to avoid a paradox in whichever timeline you are in. Just my take on it

so George doesn't publish his novel until well after star wars and star trek so he would have to use some other name for the alien and the planet. Marty A goes back in time, messes up the past, fixes it but the future is changed slightly, so Marty B is a little different but still the same enough to meet Doc and end up in the past again. He's still lost and confused enough to run into his dad and make the same mistakes Marty A did, and fix it with Doc's help. It's entirely likely that every time marty goes back, a new parallel timeline is created where things are slightly different, until maybe one time he fails. Doc knew the time machine works, his clocks in his lab aren't slow because he set them that way, he sent them back in time so he could see if they would be slow. The night he tests it with Einstein was the first test with a living being, he knew the car wouldn't hit them, but he didn't know fore sure if Einstein would survive.

I like this idea: Eric Stolz’s Marty is the prime Marty, the very first Marty before any time travel. Think of present day Doc before the Delorean reveal. He’s a scientist with some decent inventive ideas, but by his own admission, he’d never made anything big that actually works. So why was he so confident with the Delorean (to the point of putting Marty in harms way of it driving over them) when a moment after the actual time travel test, he was in shock about it actually working? It’s because he knew it worked before the actual test, because Stolz’s Marty already time traveled back to 1955. Remember right before the mall scene, Doc calls Marty to make sure he was coming on time. I submit that originally, in the Stolz timeline, he slept in and was late to the mall meetup, and showed up right before the terrorists arrive, so Doc has no time to tell him how the Delorean works. So Stolz’s Marty jumps in the car after Doc gets shot, and accidentally goes back to 1955. Now, after meeting with Doc and with no idea how to get back to the present (since he wouldn’t have the videotape to explain the 1.21 gigawatts to past Doc), Stolz’s Marty decides to survive in the 55s the only way he knows how: playing music. He decides to steal a popular song as his own every so often before the original artist creates it. This would give an in-universe explanation as to why Huey Lewis (the real life artist of The Power of Love) is a mere high school musical judge. Stolz’s Marty “created” The Power of Love before Lewis finished writing it, so Lewis never became famous. It also explains why he’s so defensive on how Fox’s Marty plays it “too darn loud”. Because he knows how it’s “supposed to be” played, because he wrote it but can’t prove it to the world.

Here are my thoughts on this... I've heard various version of the Marty B/ Marty II, which in some form or another basically assumes there to effectively be a multiverse of various timelines, and as a result of different "versions" of Marty traveling through time, those various Martys each effectively end up in one of the other timelines other than the one the are actually from (and maybe create new ones in the process). IMO this is just not how the "universe" works in BTTF. It is just one universe that changes as the result of time travel, rather than there being multiple universes, multiple Marty's from different universes, etc. The biggest pieces of evidence supporting this are the photos and newspapers that change in the movies when the timeline is altered. In a multiverse scenario, they wouldn't change. Instead it would just be the newspaper, as-is, from one timeline simply ending up in another as the result of time travel (similar to the argument of their being different versions of Marty rather than it all just being the same one person). They would have to get a copy new copy of the paper/photo from that other timeline to know what is different. They are even VERY careful about this in Part III... early in the film in 1955, Marty and younger Doc go to the library and find the photo of older Doc in 1885 standing next to the clock from the clocktower. After Marty goes back to 1885, the photo is of both of them - not just Doc. At the end of the movie, when Marty pulls the photo that he took from the library out of the wreckage of the destroyed time machine, we only see Doc... but the other side of the photo is damaged, completely removing the area where Marty would be standing. As to why Marty is pretty much the same person (but not necessarily entirely), it actually kind of makes sense from a certain point of view. We know that Marty is the youngest of the three kids. He's still in high school. Unlike his brother Dave, for example, who goes from working at Burger King at the start of the movie to having an office job at the end, Marty is still going to school like he already did. And while not 100% confident in himself (i.e. Marty's concern about sending in his tape to the record company and getting rejected), and also often being late to school... Marty otherwise seems to have his [stuff] together more so than much of his family before even going back in time. Despite his doubts, he still goes up to audition for the school dance, and does so rather confidently until being told that his band is "too darn loud." Marty also had a girlfriend, so he doesn't suffer from the same degree of dating doubts as his sister. So it stands to reason that Marty, especially while still in high school, would be the least effected by the change in his parents being more successful, etc. If the movie started out with Marty several years older, we might have seen a difference more similar to Dave's, in which Marty may have had a lower-means job to start with, but was better off after the past changed due to his parents being more successful, likely being able to pay for their kids to go to college, etc. The one change that Marty arguably does go through (which is touched upon briefly in this video through a still image with text) is the whole thing in the sequels with getting upset when being called "chicken." Now, my understanding is that the real-world explanation for that character trait in the sequels was to give Marty more of an arc to actually go through. But within the context of the movies, whether intended by the filmmakers or not, is that he goes from being kind of a "chicken" at the start of the first movie when he has doubts about sending in his demo tape, etc., to then being upset about even the idea of someone saying he his afraid/chicken, etc. That could be the result of him having been raised by the more confident version of his father than he was before the past was changed.

I'll start by saying as much as I love Back to the Future, it contradicts it self through out the whole series. That being said thinking about how Marty is the same is actually simple if you think about it. The movie established that Marty "A" is with a family that are losers, how his parents met, he has a girlfriend, ext. Marty "A" knows Doc "A" and its established he is friends with him from the very beginning. Doc "A" always had a vision of making a time machine and Doc "A" NEVER met Marty back in 1955. Doc "A" calls Marty "A" to the mall to show the time machine he built. Doc "A" tells Marty "A" he got fuel from a group of terrorists, the terrorists finds Doc "A" and KILLS HIM ( YES, DOC "A" IS OFFICIALLY DEAD).... Marty "A" escapes in the time machine and goes to 1955. Marty "A" alters the meeting of his parents before he meets up with DOC "B!". The Doc that Marty "A" meets is officially an alternate version of Doc "A" as soon as Marty "A" makes contact with him do to the fact that Doc "A" never met Marty. Marty "A" and Doc "B" figure out what they have to do to send Marty "A" back to 1985. Marty "A" makes the letter for Doc "B" to read, and Doc "B" reads it after Marty "A" is sent to an ALTERNET 1985. Marty "A" Goes to an ALTERNET version of 1985 10 minutes BEFORE the events of Doc "B" getting shot. VERY SIMILAR to what happened to Marty's "A" timeline Doc "B" gets shot. Marty "A" sees Marty "B" escaping the terrorists in the time machine going back to what can be a whole nother theory of timeliness. Marty "A" runs to Doc "B" and sees if he is alive or dead. To Marty's "A" surprise Doc "B" is alive do to the fact that he read the letter. Marty "A" now has to live in the reality that Marty "B" has left behind.

I always thought that, as the timelines change, they affect everything currently within that timeline. Since Marty and Doc are not within an affected timeline at the time of its change, they are not changed by it and can retain the memories from their adventures. If they were changed by their timelines, then their memories of what they did would be erased since the reason for changing the timeline is no longer an issue. For example: Doc rushes to Marty to help fix his future family in BTTF2. During the movie, we learn that everything started once Marty crashed his truck in a drag race against Needles. At the end of the movie, Marty is in the drag race, remembers the event as the cause of all his problems, chooses not to race, and goes away being a better person. Now, Doc doesn't need to rush to get Marty, nobody in the future needs saving, and everything is okay...but Marty retains his memories of the adventure. Since Marty is not in 2015 when he changes his future, he can remember the events of 2015 rather than immediately forget everything as soon as he stopped the race. There are multiple examples of this happening to Doc Brown, too. 1955 Doc says he doesn't want to know anything about the future for two reasons: #1, it can change the course of events; #2, since Doc is stuck in 1955 (and be affected by Marty changing the timeline), he doesn't want to be tempted to toy with the timeline change. For example: "Marty, told me that he's supposed to spend the weekend with his girlfriend at the family cabin...but they don't have a family cabin anymore. I need to fix this." But 1955 Doc knows that events need to unfold in their natural course. There are far more examples throughout the trilogy where the characters point out differences or remember information even though the timelines change. Also, the same happens with Jennifer remembering her future self, Marty remembering the old west, Doc remembering the time and date of Marty returning from the old west, etc, etc, etc.

I would be more than willing to bet that you could remember exactly what someone looked like 20+ years ago that you only had contact with for less than a week and not every day of said week, then on top of that have a child that you've been staring at for 16+ years as they grow and change, I'm confident you would be able to just look at them one day and say "ya know you look exactly like that one guy 20 years ago that got me and your father together that we talked to a dozen times. The only possible way is if they found a picture taken in that week of Marty and they either look at it every day or they just Happened to stumble across it when he was the same age and looked exactly the same, yes you just watched the movie so it's all fresh in your mind, try remembering the entire movie after not watching it for 20+ years.

How did they not remember the kid that gave them so many hints of the future and hooked them up? And why are his successful older siblings still living there? Because his sister still asks which boy called the house. Also, there was another Marty in the alternate 1985. He was in Europe. Marty ended up in an alternate universe. Okay, if we're going with that explanation, I can fill in some details of how the deed was done. You remember how when Marty first meets Doc in 1955, Doc uses a mind reading machine on Marty. It appears to fail, but what if had a recording function? The headset was too primitive to trandsmit information to Doc directly, but he had a copy of Marty's mindset as of meeting him, from timeline A, before any time travel occured. At the end Doc is left with a paradox, Marty had changed the timeline, even if he's restored his own existence, the Marty that grows up with the new timeline B will be a different person. Now Doc can control his own actions, but he can't exactly recreate the Marty who took the actions that led to the Delorean being sent back in time. Even if he befriends this new Marty, what are the chances that he will act exactly as he did before at the critical moment. Doc had an entire week while Marty was trying to get his parents back together to study the Delorean, so he knows how to put one together in timeline B. I postulate that as you suggested, the version we saw at the start of the movie was partly staged to conform to timeline A, both the video footage and Marty's memories. How does he recover Marty's memories? With 1980's components he can rebuild the mind reading machine to play back the memories, and even imprint them as well as copying them. If 1980's components won't do the job, he could finish the Delorean early and go into the future to find stuff, even if he didn't have the plutonium yet. How? This Doc knows a bolt of lightning will work, and someone as smart as Doc could probably figure out a way to duplicate it. My guess would be a generator set and heavy duty capacitor bank feeding to an overhead wire. He could jump to the future with gold and a bunch of items that would be instant antiques like 1985 mint comic books, and as a backup against not being able to acquire a futuretech solution , hides a second generator set/capacitor bank in the old mine, having bought a 100 year lease. As long as he has those two units, one in 1985 and one in the future, he could go back and forth as needed, so he doesn't need to get things right first time. We know that futuretech includes devices that can induce sleep via neural induction, and that even videogames use neural interfaces. 'You have to use your hands? That's like a baby's toy.' With that sort of tech, and the science behind it which pretty likely to be available in research libraries in the future, it's pretty certain Doc could rework the mind reading machine to recover and view the memories. Meanwhile, he befriends Marty B, and learns his habits for one he can use. At some point near to October 1985, he replaces or upgrades Marty's Walkman. It includes a memory copy/imprint device and settings that imposes suggestibility and can even transmit subliminal commands when music is played or can induce sleep. Doc can also monitor it remotely and tell when it is in use. He knows Marty frequently listens to it in bed. At some point during the day when Marty is using his Walkman, Doc implants the command to listen to music when Marty goes to bed. When Marty is in bed Doc then induces sleep. The mind reading function then copies Marty B's mindset and transmits the pattern to the main machine. It then overwrites a slightly edited copy of Marty A's mindstate (missing the last few days from using the Delorean to getting to Doc's house in 1955) onto Marty B. Either than or it simply suppresses Marty B's mind state and imprints Marty A's mind state over the original. The Marty that wakes up at 1 am is already living in timeline B, but has Marty A's memories, which means the first 20 minutes of the film is basically a giant dream sequence of him reliving his previous incarnation's last day before the time jump. He goes to meet Doc, who has set up things to play out as they had the first time, and jumps back in time. closing the loop, all the way up to Doc copying Marty A's memories again in 1955. The timeline isn't perfect. This go around, Marty hit's Old Man Peabody's Pine tree, and the suggestibility function was still on when he uses the Walkman to terrorise George, which is why George capitulates so easily (though that may not have been needed). But what of Marty B's actaual memories, hasn't Doc effectively killed the Marty he remembers befriending in the B timeline? And if he restortes them, isn't he killing Maryy A? Well if I was Doc, I'd either have the Walkman slowly restore Marty B's memories over some days, wihtout overwriting Marty A, which Marty will assume is just the changes he made to the timeline catching up with him, or if Marty B's memories were just suppressed, the same thing happens. The slow restoration allows Marty B to come back to himself and fit with his timeline B family, while still having the memory of having the memories of Marty A. Neither Marty 'dies' and Doc ensures a stable time loop, avoiding paradox.
