Off topic a bit, but I introduced the Shabbard into my D&D campaign. It's non-magical, it just lets you draw and sheath your sword as a free action.
@paulcoy90604 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't it be considered "Interacting With An Object"? Like opening or closing a door. That would still give you a Free Action available.
@azruldanish4 жыл бұрын
You are right it's already free
@predwin19984 жыл бұрын
@@paulcoy9060 Not exactly. While you are largely correct, you are only allowed to interact with a single object for free during your turn, so you can't draw your sword *and* open a door for free on the same turn. With the Shabbard drawing or sheathing your sword does not "consume" your one free object interaction for the turn. This is of course based on my knowledge of the 5e rules and terminology and I can't tell if this is actually how it's implemented since I don't play with @Arctic Banana's group, and it might also be slightly different if they play in another edition of d&d, but based on the given description, this is what I can tell.
@arcticbanana664 жыл бұрын
- In 5th Edition, drawing or sheathing a weapon uses your Object Interaction action. You can also draw your weapon in the same action that you make an attack with that weapon, which 9 times out of 10 makes the point moot. - It's been a long time since I've looked at the 4th Ed. books (my group has never played 4th Ed. but I own the books), but I think it's a Swift Action. - In 3rd/3.5 Edition (the one Shad has previously said his group plays) and in Pathfinder, drawing a weapon is a Move Action, unless you have the Quick Draw feat which allows you to draw as a Free Action or draw a hidden or concealed weapon as a Move Action. - AD&D 2nd Edition (the edition I learned to play D&D with, and my personal preference (mainly due to nostalgia)) is a Godawful mess in general, with at least three different rules for drawing weapons between the Players Handbook and the many rules supplements (specifically _Oriental Adventures_ and the _Rules Cyclopedia,_ and maybe _Combat & Tactics_ and the _Complete Fighter's Handbook)._ The easiest rule is to add the weapons speed value to your initiative. In short, the Shabbard frees up the action you otherwise would have needed to use to draw/sheath your sword, allowing you to do something else with that action, and depending on the Edition you play, not needing to spend a Feat slot (Quick Draw is pretty useful, though). [Edit - Formatting for readability]

@metanightmare44544 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure you're right. At least that's what I saw. On another note, I thought of another possible point in favor of the back scabbard. I think the back scabbard would've been pretty useful for people who were limited to effectively only have one arm. I realize that's a very situational benefit, but sometimes a fighter might have had their off-hand occupied doing something else and the extra freedom would've probably been appreciated. Alternatively, we should consider people who were actually handicapped. Obviously, it'd be ideal for a handicapped person to never have to fight, but we know that's not always how things play out in reality. In either scenario, I can see having only one hand making it a major pain to sheathe or unsheathe with a side scabbard.
@Loaderdani4 жыл бұрын

@@Loaderdani The trouble then is that you wouldn't be able to take the cloak off, and they can be quite the hindrance in a fight (plus it probably wouldn't be as aesthetically pleasing for the cloak to be crumpled up under the belt. Shad, I gotta say, one really good reason to wear a sword on your hip rather than your back is for ease of weapon retention. If somebody tries to grab my sword from my hip, I can immediately grab the hilt with my hand to prevent the person from drawing that sword while it is under their control, and can use my other hand to mess up their plans, or use both hands to hold onto my sword. I can see much more easily than if it is on my back. If somebody grabs the hilt of my sword while it is up behind my shoulder, there's not much I can do about that. If it is on my back, any attempt at weapon retention uses far weaker muscle groups at a significant disadvantage. Not to mention that I cannot even see what is happening back there, and it is nigh impossible to use both hands effectively. This, I think, would be my personal reason not to carry on my back.
@linhhoang13634 жыл бұрын
I think the only scenario when a noble wore the sword on their back would be when they were riding on horseback to another place, in a group (or with his bodyguards) which was relatively safe. Wearing on the back would be more convenient and less cumbersome while riding.

Nice video as always, I see three other points to be mentioned here: 1) Drawing from the side can help you deflect incoming blows (as Fiore show it in the 1 handed sword section) 2) In a time when material are not cheap, and wearing long belt and long dress is to show how wealthy you are, extra straps seems pretty fancy 3) I think you said it yourself in previous video, since a longsword is symbol of the wealthy, why would you park you ferrari in the backyard when you can peacock the shit out of it
@MrWhiteVzla4 жыл бұрын
The second point you mentioned is something most people tend to forget when making the argument of where the sword should be placed. Cloth and leather weren't cheap or abundant. Yes, you can design one that will be for the sword on the back, but that would cost money. LOTS OF IT. The type of money that only a very wealthy person can afford. That's why most weapon wearers used it the cheapest way, the hip.
@sheikranl39494 жыл бұрын
Another possible reason why swords weren't worn on the back: Most knights and noblemen who were depicted to have swords on the sides, were fighting on horses. As you can see with Shads own backscabbard at 14:49 it reaches really far down, even reaching the legs. I'd imagine riding a horse with your scabbard sticking in your horse or bumping from your horse all the time wouldn't be pleasant. If you would be riding a horse, wearing a sword on the side seems much more comfortable. And after all, knights and noblemen were the people who thought about war the most. They didn't really care about the troubles of the peasant footsoldiers, unless it would impact the battle significantly. Wearing a sword on the side simply did not. It may actually be the other way around. As Shad pointed out in a different video, there would be danger of hurting your allies when you would draw your sword, because it requires more space.

That is a very practical back scabbard, I love how easy it is to draw and stow. I think the biggest con, that you don't mention is that it does not do a good job of protecting the sword from the elements. Rain, dust, mud, seems like it would easily gather and get trapped in with the blade where a traditional scabbard makes more of a seal with the hilt of the sword. Plus, being on the side means your cloak could further protect it from the elements. It does look very cool though and makes for functional use.

I'd say there's also a defensive advantage to drawing from the hip, in that as the blade is drawn it can be brought across the body, thus leaving the belly less exposed during the draw. Drawing from the back effectively exposes the belly during the entire drawing movement.

Similar to the way i would carry my assault riffle on my back during a march when I was doing my military service. As soon as we we in a situation where it might be needed, we would carry it in “patrol” or “side” carry.
@mrobligatory.52344 жыл бұрын
If you had a dagger or a short sword it would solve the problem of needing to actually draw the sword in an ambush (or do you have enough time in an ambush?) Edit: I reread my reply and I’m making some corrections, what I meant with the problem of drawing the sword is that if you use a “normal” scabbard it would take a while to get the whole thing it your back and draw it, sorry if the start was unclear (sorry if I’m wrong or rude).

In my experience, I never once wore my rifle on my back while marching. When on a forced march we always carried it slung over the shoulder for quick and easy access. However, I do think that you make a valid point. Swords might have been worn on the back while marching, but once on the battlefield they were either moved back to the hip or tossed to the side and recovered later. I believe that the Metatron has stated that was what the Japanese did with the nodachi. They wore it slung on their back while walking/marching aand pulled it off their back and tossing the scabbard when they needed to use it.

One other reason against the back scabbard I can see is that it's not dry. In a classical scabbard, the sword is stored in a dry and somewhat weatherproof sheath, while the back scabbard you demonstrate is open. If the weather then was anything like it is today in Europe, that means a lot of wet days when your sword would have gotten wet or even drenched by the rain. If you don't want to spend a lot of time caring for your sword so that it doesn't rust, the dry scabbard option seems like a pretty big advantage.

You are onto it. It is all about "what you need to fulfill your goal and role." It comes down to most-practical-options, practical-capacity-limits and having-the-equipment. E.g. 1 feudal noble knights had good equipment, though probably not the best capacity or practicality (nobles never plan to sacrifice their OWN lives - no one does). E.g. 2 conscription troops with minimal equipment, okay capacity and high practicality (equipped better, can be sacrificed if necessary). When it comes to putting s**t on the back, you can put on one big thing before pulling it out becomes a nightmare. You either have weapons, a shield or a bow on your back. Shield is the most practical choice considering that it works as back armor when not in use and is a necessity for low-experience conscripts that would die before developing significant parrying or dodging skills. In other cases, carrying a bow would pretty much make you a dedicated archer with the projectiles you also need to carry, similar to heavy machine gun parts of today (that's carried in teams because the whole thing weighs a lot). For carrying extra weapons in the back (multiple swords do not NEED back space), that would make sense if you have something big (but not heavy) you cannot stuff anywhere else. Such as a spear. Though carrying long stuff on the back is super impractical indoors, as it gets stuck to every surface. You cannot carry heavy stuff on your bag without seriously draining your strength. If you have carried a backbag weighing multiple pounds, you know it gets tiring even at very light loads and no conditioning eliminates that feature. The constant resting weight on your back prevents your upper-body muscles from properly resting. The real issue is that you cannot take that stuff off your back ever. If you do, your hands get full of stuff and often you have to drop some stuff to keep things practical. When you drop stuff, all that effort carrying the stuff is wasted if you end up just dropping the stuff. There is an aspect to carrying stuff that people miss when they solely focus on full loadouts. A lot of troops had limited weapons if any at all. It was enough, because very often you needed empty hands to carry stuff. That stuff includes LOOTED WEAPONS AND ARMOR. There was a joke of the time about Finnish Winter War was something like "no point in giving Finns weapon aid when they get plenty from Soviets" (that tended to get captured because Soviets tried to use out-numbering tactics that backfired). Hence the back space is very useful for general hauling of low-density stuff. Clothes for bandaging, emergency dry-rations, pieces of wood (for makeshift bridging, laddering and general balancing), etc.. Also, human pack-muling is a thing, especially when looting enemy stockpiles and no wheeled hardware is available.

Doesn't Shad's design still leave the upper part of one edge exposed? I would think that would be a very practical reason not to use it if you were traveling as it's going to let moisture in and not protect the sword from the environment. A big part could also be simply that when sword is on the hip, it is protected under your body, arm and potentially cloak from the elements. You won't get rain so easily on the hilt or worse, into the scabbard, if your sword is on your hip. On the back, it literally begs for rain to get into the scabbard. This may happen when the sword is sheathed, but also, imagin having to unsheathe your sword in the rain. The first thing which surely will happen will be rain getting into that scabbard. Not sure how much that can damage it, but it definitely won't be good for the blade once you sheathe it back. Also, your back scabbard with split on its side may have a big problem with water getting in all the time in general. Scabbard is there to protect the blade, not just to be a place you place it into when not in use.

Not sure whether this is worth mentioning or if anyone else has observed this already but there might be an important disadvantage at wearing the sword on the back, namely when you unsheath it. In fact observing the way one has to lift the arm over the shoulder to reach the hilt and pull the sword out it gives the impression to be leaving a big portion of the torso exposed to attacks. This might not be such a big disavantage (not an expert to be honest) but still the motion itself seems to leave two critical soft spot exposed, namely the lungs area and the armpit, to the mercy of an arrow or perhaps even a knife attack at close range. On the other hand unsheating the sword from the side gives more the impression of putting the shoulder right in front on the chest for the time it takes to unsheath the sword, thus protecting it. By the look of it one might as well think that, in this second case, the motion itself may be as well intended to slash an enemy right when unsheathing the weapon or - in case of a sudden attack at close range - give the chance to use the shoulder to ram into your opponent and shove him backward buying one time to pull the sword out. Moreover, being the sword a quite long weapon it may be tough to unsheath it from the back if in a tight spot or indoor where there might be obstructions right over one's head that may render the unsheathing motion awkward and slower.

14:40 -ish my suggestion of a reason to put sword your away: You're defending a castle on the ramparts and need to help shove off a scaling ladder before more people come up. That's something you'd want two hands for. You wouldn't want to abandon your sword in such frantic close-quarters/limited foot-room fighting, but if you fought the invaders off enough that you had a second to breathe, disposing of that ladder could be incredibly valuable in terms of defending your castle.

That is a good point but medieval armour was specifically designed to protect the wearer and part of that is the wearer needs to be able to have free range of movement. This means that the armour still gave the wearer the ability to still do everything they would normally be able to do. If you don't believe me check out videos of people running and jumping and doing cartwheels in full armour. As FoereaperGaming said though, it could just be that it is hard to do after an intense workout such as fighting in a battle for potentially hours. That said, you really only need to draw the sword before the battle/fight so there would be no need to worry about drawing it mid/after fight.

@cheostian48474 жыл бұрын
To be honest, I think the hip scabbard is better then back scabbard. Reasons: 1. if it's heavily raining / snowing, the back scabbard is not protecting the blade from the elements (as 2/3rds of side of blade is bare in order to slip it in and out) on hip scabbard it is in a sheath (basically 100% coverage) and if you wore a cloak you could cover it more while still being able to retrieve it if need. The back scabbard likely wouldn't work even with a slit in the cloak. 2. If your lined up shoulder to shoulder with your allied army people, you are much more likely to slice into someone or elbow someone in the jaw trying to draw from that back scabbard then a hip one. 3. As mentioned by someone else, you now somewhat lost your ability to carry your bedding and other gear on your back in a backpack while traveling. 4. Try doing for a 2 hour hike through a bush with a back scabbard compared to side scabbard and see where the weight actually feels better. Hips hold weight better then shoulders if possible to place the weight on the hips. That's why many backpacking backpacks have thick hip straps on them. the shoulder straps are often more for balancing the weight rather then carrying it. If you don't need weight compressing your spine and back, and instead sitting on your strongest part mostly (your legs) then it's better.

I'm actually almost done building a Shabbard myself for a calimacil sword. We've also been considering the third strap but this settles it.

The reason why. Probably because they couldn't make custom back scabbreds like you. Love your videos Shad.

If you think about it, just about everything was custom made back then. You'd tell a tailor what you needed, and how you wanted it, and they'd make it. A lot of skill merchants like leather tailors, didn't just have a surplus of merchandise all lying around. They couldn't mass produce items, and had no room for error/product not selling, like in today's economy. (Not talking about shirts and trousers, but leatherwork for scabbards/harnesses/packs, etc) A smith would have more wiggle room when it came to this. They'd probably have a few basic swords or daggers on display. I'd highly doubt armor would be though, except maybe a shield.

I think a major con that has been overlooked is security. If someone sneaks up behind you and unsheathed your sword it is relatively easy to do, by the time you realize and turn around you are already disarmed. Whereas the more traditional position is tucked under your arm at all times, and like you mentioned most swords would be concealed under a cloak which makes the standard method even more secure. The only easy way for someone to unsheathe your sword would be from the front, their attempt would always be in your eyeline so you can react accordingly.

interesting, I tested Shads theory. I went ahead and timed shad on his draw, is hip draw was 0.73 seconds as opposed to his back draw which was 0.69 seconds so I guess he was right is a Very slight difference in draw speed with the back scabbard being slightly faster. So yeah he was right.

I think the main reason people didn't wear swords on their backs is that is very easy to disarm someone if they wear their weapons on their back. Imagine a policeman carrying his pistol on his back as oppose to his side, veeeery dangerous thing to do in my opinion

14:02 One reason I thought of is to switch to a ranged weapon. In this case, sheathing your sidearm is feasible because there presumably aren't any opponents in melee range, so it makes sense to switch to a bow or crossbow. Another reason is if you wanted to quickly mount a horse, in which case the backscabbard has the additional advantage of not interfering with mounting or riding the horse.

You mentioned cloaks as protection for the rain getting in the way, unless you make the cloak with holes to run the belts through to put the scabbard outside the cloak. But the rain itself is also a problem. It gets into the scabbard, soaking the inside lining, and that rusts a blade. A scabbard with a much larger opening (like the Shabbard) would let in more rain. If you want to put it in a fantasy setting, maybe add some magic that keeps the rain out of the back scabbard, whether it's put on the scabbard itself or on the cloak. A Repel Water enchantment would do nicely.

a 2nd hood to cover the scabbard could also work like a cloak with a 2nd hood sown behind the regular hood that folds over the back-scabbard when it rains.

A better way to waterproof the blade channel would be to line the upper part of the channel (the part that's open on the side - just a thin strip along both sides of the part that would be closed on a regular scabbard) with short brushes (e.g., trimmed horsehair). L This would impede water getting in, but shouldn't impede the blade coming in or out - as long as you don't make the brushes too long or stiff or something. (There's always a way to screw it up.) Not watertight? Well, no - but check this out. With regular use, the brushes would pick up oil from a properly-maintained blade - and thus the brushes would repel water, for the same reason that waterfowl have oily feathers. (Hence the saying, "like water off a duck's back".) Even if it never becomes 100% watertight, it'd be a great improvement.

Personally i don't like fantasy settings where magic is used for mundane things, it makes the magic... less magic.
