The fact that they didn’t try a price drop beyond very limited discounts makes me wonder how tight the profit margin was.

If it was priced at the same price point as an actual cruise, then I think it would have made more sense and been profitable but it definitely was overpriced. For $1200 per guest per night I could stay at a 5-star hotel in a major city and eat a 6-course meal for every meal. Or even if you want to compare it to an actual cruise ship, you can go on high end cruises for $1200 per night per ROOM for a balcony suite and that includes all your food, entertainment, amenities, etc. It was just overpriced for what you were getting.

I have been on other cruises including budget ones like Carnival and high end like Viking. Cost a lot to do Disney VIP tour for max of 10 hours one day up to 10 folks. Food extra. Park tickets extra. No immersion in story. Again Disney has value, moderate and deluxe options depending on what is affordable for you. This was high end and unique. That is reality in our stratified society. I wish everyone could experience first class everything but we would have to build a different world for that.

I imagine that the executives in their first meeting about this disaster had a conversation that went along the lines of Gennaro the lawyer from Jurassic Park: “And we can charge anything we want, $2,000 a day, $10,000 a day, and people will pay it. And then there’s the merchandise…” When the lone voice of reason said that this is not meant to cater to only the super rich and regular families should be able to enjoy it, they said, “Sure they will. I think people underestimate the roadblock Disney put in place by not allowing direct reservations from their website. We are huge Star Wars and Disney fans. We've stayed at almost every Disney World hotel, and went least 5 or 6 times in the last year, but the place was running for at least 6 months before I even realized it was open. I could find cost on the site, but even that was a pain and there was no way to book. No where that said you couldn't just book online like every other vacation destination in the last 10 or 15 years. We kept waiting for it to be open to the public, would look every couple of months, but it never did. Sure, this would probably have been easy if we were willing to use a travel agent, but we shouldn't have to. If Disney doesn't care enough to open it up for easy booking to regular visitors, why should we care enough to go?

In their hubris, they thought they were cultivating a new generation of Star Wars fans while completely ignoring us legacy fans who have supported the franchise since the 1980's. Disney priced themselves out. We were just in Orlando last month and spent $1600 for a 1 week vacation at Universal Studios. That’s including park tickets for all 3 parks with park hopping and staying at the Cabana Bay hotel. The one day that we went to MK was the worst experience we’ve ever had. Pirates and Haunted mansion were down more than half the day, the park was easily the most crowded we’ve ever seen, even before Covid and the wait times for everything was over an hour. Disney is way too expensive for what it is now for the most part and they are now seeing the ramifications of that.

I don't think they are worried with pricing considering they are drawing crowds from the entire WORLD not just the Southeast or even the whole US. Disney World is one of the most famous theme parks on the planet. It's not the 90s anymore, if you go you are competing for space with rich tourists from everywhere from Germany to China to Australia, etc. I went a few times as a kid, and honestly I've just accepted I'll never go again, it's not worth it. Go to any of the other Disney parks in the world if you want the Disney brand specifically, I've read that it's actually cheaper if you plan ahead to go to places like Disney Tokyo or Disney Paris from the US than it is to spend a week at Disney World, it'd definitely be cheaper than going to this Star wars immersion.

One of my relatives works at the Cruiser. I was down there just a month ago and at that time he mentioned another angle not covered in this video. His complaint was about the marketing. See, we’re a Disney family, MK opened a month after I was born, several relatives of mine it’s the only employer they’ve ever had. One uncle just retired - started working there at age 18 in the 70s. I’ve visited the parks dozens of times and I’ve never even lived in Florida. So when I asked my cousin “what’s that?” when he told me where he was working, he was annoyed. He said one issue is wealthy people booking stays and not realizing it’s an immersive geek-fest. They just see the price and assume it’s some great resort. They show up and want nothing to do with the immersive stuff. You can treat it like a hotel but if you’re looking for a great resort with typical resort features, this isn’t it! It’s crazy to me that they built all this, I love Disney AND Star Wars, and had no idea this existed. The failure was probably able to be corrected. But the current Disney management has no fear of making huge changes…..

I think the advertising was lacking too but that was probably part of the issue. They couldn't just advertise for this like they can for WDW or Disneyland as a whole. Totally agree. All this immersive interactivity was SUPPOSED to be in Galaxy's Edge, but then the locked it up in an underground bunker behind that paywall you mentioned. The average Star Wars fan and the die-hard SW fans were pissed that the SW "land" we were promised turned out to be a shopping mall. We thought we were going to get the SW version of the Wizarding World, you know, something that had more than 2 rides (one of which doesn't work half the time), an icee stand, a sausage cart, and a casual dining space. Where were the characters we knew and loved, the ones we used to get during Star Wars weekends? Where were the wandering aliens and droids? Where was the ride-on alien mount we were promised? Honestly, they put more into Pandora than they did to Galaxy's Edge. And then they said, Hey remember that experience we promised you? Here it is...but you gotta pay more than a cruise for it. Come on in! But the average SW fan doesn't have that kind of money. Even most of the diehards like me don't have that kind of money. And Disney always, always, always was wrong to set GE in the sequel era. (Poseidon Entertainment's channel has a great vid on how and why GE should be re-themed away from the sequels). This was just never something I was going to spend the price of a used car on, even if I could have come up with that kind of money.

Honestly, I think the biggest failure is multiple things, but I think mostly is the price tag, WAY TOO EXPENSIVE. Then you find out that you're kinda shoehorned into having limited access to Hollywood Studios when they feel like letting you in, shouldn't be forcing every guest to not have access to the park it's attached to when it comes with a ridiculous premium price. Lastly, it's a one-time experience for the most part, for the few people it not only appealed to but could also afford it, there's pretty much no reason to go back unless you wanted to try new food or dining options.

I have family and friends who I'm sure would have loved this but couldn't afford to go. Side note: everything has some kind of cost to it. So yeah - we're always making choices on what we're going to do with what we have available to us. Though I'm not sure people fully understood what this particular option was. But in our middle class blue-collar neighborhood, none of the parents could ever afford to take us on this kind of trip. I do believe the immersive bunker like experience was a good idea again in theory. If you’re really into playing and imagination, being interrupted by some regular folks just strolling through your game is a little jarring. If you truly want to stretch your imagination then putting yourself in experience like this would just be incredible. For us it was the price. Also maybe it was too immersive. I like the idea that the crew of the ship is part of the Star Wars universe but I'm an introvert too. Maybe instead if a complex story they could have done a simple mission similar to the bounty hunter game they already have. They could have worked the rest of Disney World into the story as well. Like saying only their captain knows how to get to this magical land of happiness that's ruled by a kind creature known for his big round ears I hope they turn it into a star wars hotel

Disney is always on the leading (bleeding) edge of investment and technology. All companies have things that don't work, but strong companies keep to their core and dip their toes into new adventures. I applaud them for trying this very unique and complicated venture.

It must have been insanely expensive to operate if that was the price point needed. Retheme it to the original three movies, cut the price to $1,000 per day for a family of four, replace half the live action with on-screen performances embedded in the walls rather than live actors, and see if that works.

I am in the camp of someone who's been desperate for an experience like this since I was a kid (not necessarily Star Wars themed). I think the only large-scale production that's come even close to it is Evermore, and that has its own host of problems - mostly budget and management-related. Even though I had access to the discounted sailings with a DVC membership, the cost was just far too prohibitive when you factor in transportation to FL from the Midwest and then from MCO to WDW. I am devastated to learn that they are closing it instead of reevaluating the base price. I only hope that they don't wash their hands of multi-day, immersive experience attractions in the future while pointing to their sole misstep as the reason why. If anyone can do it right, it's Disney, but as we've seen they're also most likely to muck it up through self-sabotage.

I feel like they could condense this into just a dinner experience if they wanted. Allow people that have park tickets to take the shuttle, or if people don't they can just drive there and park. You don't need all the check-in people or the baggage handlers etc. Have like a 30 min period in the atrium, have the lieutenant show up etc. Then go to dinner, have the gaya concert. Dinner gets interrupted, have the Kylo/Rey battle. Then give people another hour or so to shop, play around on the bridge or go in the small bar and that's it. They can cut most of the staff that way, a few of the characters etc. They might only be able to do 2 shows a day this way but I think it could be a way to save it to some extent and if the dinner is somewhat reasonable priced it could be way more popular.

Then they opened a SW themed hotel that would create an experience that made one feel closer to SW without being hokey or too crazy expensive. They could have kept that thing filled forever. The mistake was combining a hotel stay with a dinner theater. They are very different in nature. Most people paying that kind of bread for a hotel want a lot of amenities, things like tennis, golf, pools, spa, high-end restaurants. For a dinner theater, people want a decent meal but a really fun experience for a few hours (not a few days). Disney would have been better off going with the dinner theater experience, with all the cast members from the various movies, lots of action and excitement, guest interaction, and merch sales. That may have worked for a reasonable price.

The price was the problem for sure. As others have said, if it was priced like a cruise it would have eventually made back the ROI. That closed down to the dismay and sorrow of many. It featured a highly detailed environment and a talented cast of denizens, and a bucket load of special effects. I think it would be a mistake for Disney to think the idea was just too new, groundbreaking and something never done before. They have a couple of decades of numbers from Disney Cruise Line to know how to cost a two night experience with character interactions and live performances. They also know the demand for their concierge level suites on those cruises and what passengers would expect for that price tag - i.e a balcony, large suite, and a complimentary bottle of bubbly on arrival. If this was a product developed under DCL, and directly marketed as a cruise, it may have performed better.

Many of what people in this comment section are saying is “looking at the concrete wall is not as special as visiting a park.” But there was always something to do and I actually felt as though I was somebody else actually in the starwars universe. From the unique dinners, to the look of the ship, it all felt so real to me. The story made sense, and there was nothing better than being invited to secret meetings my parents and sister weren’t. The cast members were amazing at what they did and one of the sajas really sold the trip for me as real, I was in the outdoor simulator and stacking some rocks when she came in and talked to me for 20 mins, before instructing me to hold my hand out and think about some things, the rocks all fell and pulled toward me. I’m sure it’s magnets but it felt so real and special. I forgot what the bad dudes name was on this, but he kept making an effort with my sister (who was playing the bad side) which was special to her. Of course you will love the experience, but if we consider the price i dont think its worth it unless you really loved star wars

In the 90’s all the Disney hotels had cruise type pricing. All Disney parks, including water parks, were included in the price and you you could purchase a food package for the hotel you stayed at.

I was really upset when Disney built this hotel. Especially because they canceled the Mary Poppins ride and Spaceship Earth refurbishment.

I recently went to the Disneyland after dark Star Wars nite and granted, that’s a very different experience, but I had an amazing time and really felt like I got my money’s worth. It’s not immersive in the same way but getting to hear Star Wars music everywhere, meet some of my favorite characters, try some really cool food, see an awesome fireworks show, and the general ambiance of everyone all dressed up with their lightsabers was really cool. Plus you also get to actually be in the park and ride rides and stuff. I think if they brought a Star Wars nite to Orlando it would be much more popular than this hotel/cruise/whatever was

If they had made this more like an escape room where there are several different room themes where you can book different activities and at different levels based on your needs, they could have made sooooooo much money. They could have a room for light saber training and a room for the ships control room, etc. Then multiple families could have enjoyed it at a much more affordable price range and still have been able to go enjoy the parks or something else if they wanted to. They made it so that you were fully surrounded by this world but then they rushed people around and did such cheap stuff for the decorations and activities, it was never going to be worth that price point. We all said it from the beginning. Thinking of all the cast members who had to be there for each cruise, including backup performers and people who were never even out in the public eye makes my head spin. Disney was never going to be able to significantly drop their price because they had to cover all there cast members. If they had set it up with screens where you watch performances, instead of it being live it would have been somewhat less immersive but it could have cut costs quite a bit smh.

Went exactly one year ago - we saved up big time to go (Covid lockdowns helped) - and my 21 year old son and I had an absolute blast - mind you, we are very much into Star Wars, and were game to immerse ourselves and cosplay. Very expensive enterprise, and I do hope they’ll open it as a boutique inn for fans.

Here’s an idea, lower the cost and retheme to Hollywood tower hotel. That I’d stay in.

I appreciate the “big idea” and execution learnings. It’s been a rough 2-3 years so I can understand why it didn’t bring in the expected revenue. I’m excited to see how Disney takes these learnings and make something truly magical at an affordable rate.

Such an excellent video. I love your fair reporting style about this controversial attraction/resort. It was definitely over-priced. I hope it remains in some form like people have suggested. A normal themed resort would be fantastic and far more obtainable for many folks. Thank you for your wonderful take on this. Bright suns!

Take out the DEI and the New Trilogy Material and Put In Original Trilogy and Prequals material and Characters... and they'd be printing money riht now.

Definitely the price tag that had me saying "oh hell no!" At about $1250 a night per person, I just couldn't justify the cost.
