There is a group of wolves in British Columbia that have taken on a more piscovorous lifestyle. They were forced out of thier old hunting grounds a few generations ago and had to find new sources of food. These wolves are smaller, better swimmers, and are becoming genetically distinct from inland wolves.

@davidgantenbein93623 жыл бұрын
I read that cephalopods have a problem to hunt crabs over longer distances due to their respiratory system. So they use their intelligence and other characteristics for ambushes instead. So it seems less of a better respiratory system and more of a different approach of how to use oxygen compared to fish or crabs.

Great video on a fascinating topic. And I have often wondered myself about the counter-intuitive benefits that terrestrial tetrapods have in the water compared to fish/sharks. I never considered the benefits of breathing oxygen through the air with lungs as being a vital component for a large brain... but it totally makes sense. And as intimidating as a great white shark is, they’re tactical amateurs compared to the Orca (which occasionally preys upon them).

Because land is much more tuff. Land animals are so overwhelmingly good they even dominate under water. Simple mans answers.
@maniacram3 жыл бұрын
Not really. It's just boosted metabolism and brain power due to ability to breathe air, cause they have lungs 🫁. A water breathing animal has no way of maintaining the speed or brain power of animals transitioning from land since there is just not enough dissolved oxygen boost their metabolism. For example fast swimming fish such as sailfish can only maintain their speeds for short bursts. Maybe go with actual facts instead of trying to boost your ego next time. It also goes both ways. For example insects were the dominant land animals at one point, so why didn't they 'toughen up' and take water too? Instead it was the aquatic fish who invaded the land at that time. Who knows, next it might be the turn of the octopi to invade land and start dominating as a species.
@blackchang19813 жыл бұрын
I had a similar thought/question earlier this week when I came across the concept of "Devolution" and wonder why certain mammals decided to go back to aquatic life when evolution "seemed" to move away from being restricted to it (Aquatic life). Great video 👍
@windhelmguard52953 жыл бұрын
yea mammals have many adaptations that no other aquatic animal has, they have more effective hearts and ears, not just brains.
@Ispeakthetruthify2 жыл бұрын
Well terms like evolution and devolution, can be tricky. Evolution is a term that means going forward, "evolving" in what is considered the "right direction" for progress. And devolution is the opposite of that. But in the real world, and many times in nature, that's not always the case. Nature is about survival and taking advantage of opportunities: If you're a land animal, and happen to figure out that there is more food and resources in the water/oceans, you may begin the process of becoming fully aquatic. It's like people living on an island. Food sources on the island may be scarce to none, but the water around the island, is full of food sources. So the people take to the water to make a living. And there is more water than land on this planet, so going back to the water, would not be restricting at all. You're actually expanding your horizons, coming from the land.

I believe the easy answer to the question is that terrestrial animals breathe air, and there is more oxygen to breathe in the same volume of air than in the water. That means air breathers can be more energetic than water breathers. I suppose aquatic animals do not evolve to breathe air because evolution only takes a step if each step is incrementally better than the previous one, and evolving away from functional gills to functional lungs is not beneficial for a fully aquatic animal until the transition is complete. There was no need to fully transition to lung use except when transitioning from water to land, but when transitioning from land back into water, it is not beneficial to re-evolve gills since lungs are better.

So it’s basically the ability to develop into a semiaquatic lifestyle as a jumping point that makes this possible. But what really doesn’t seem to happen at all anymore is aquatic vertebrates developing into semiaquatic or land based animals. It seems that this evolutionary direction is totally blocked by the land based vertebrates since quite some time.

This is a question I've had on my mind for a long time, I was wondering why reptiles and mammals were able to outcompete fish for the niche of alpha predator in the ocean. I assumed that because fish have gills and thus are better adapted to aquatic life that it was odd for them to be outcompeted by terrestrial animals. I was unaware of the Brain size issue. Thank you for the great video.
@Ispeakthetruthify2 жыл бұрын
Well the term outcompeted, may be a bit of a stretch. Fish are by far the dominant species in the oceans, in terms of numbers and variety. Nothing is better at living in the water than a fish. Sharks have dominated the oceans for hundreds of millions of years, longer than either marine mammals or reptiles. And even with new competition from former land dwellers, they still haven't skipped a beat. Nor has any other fish species in their presence. Now marine reptiles and mammals, have indeed been HIGHLY successful in their journey back to the water, but much of that has to do with vastness and richness(food wise) of the oceans. Even with a lot of niches filled, there are still numerous open niches, and plenty of food to go around. Once you find a niche, become successful in it, now you may have the luxury to start expanding your range, and adding other niches to your species' resume. And in this process, some advantageous physical features may begin to evolve, especially size and maneuverability. The ancestors of modern whales first took to the oceans eating small fish, crustaceans, and aquatic plants. They eventually evolved and expanded to be good sized meat eaters. They then learned to take advantage of the GREATEST food source the oceans have to offer(plankton and krill), and evolved into the largest animals the planet has EVER seen. That's nature for you, you just never know. Who would have ever thought some small, relatively defenseless primates on the African savannas and forests, would go on to become the dominant species on the planet?

So aquatic vertebrates evolved into land reptiles which then evolved into aquatic Mosasaurs which then evolved back into land reptiles like Komodo Dragons. That's some kind of DESIGN strategy for sure. Forcing the fish to have large brains caused them to have smaller guts? Interesting concept, because it is thought that human ancestors became more carnivorous, which decreased their gut size which enabled them to support larger brains. It's also thought that the first human ancestors originally left the trees to escape competition, forcing them into a new hostile environment, which required larger brains. That almost makes you think that it is the survival of the LEAST fit. Makes you wonder what "fit" even means. Very good video, thanks.
@NORTH023 жыл бұрын
I do not think mosasaurs evolved back into land animals, I am pretty sure they went exstinct. The reason fish evolved smaller guts in the study was because they had spend more oxygen on their brains. This in not analogous to humans at all. The point is that breathing water is just less efficient than air breathing. Also humans developed smaller guts not becuase of a lack of oxygen but becuase of more nutritious food. Thanks for watching!
