Ok so for those who haven't read the description there's a few of corrections necessary to what was said in this video: Voice actor/director Clifford Chapin pointed out that, contrary to what we implied at 7:58, voice actors will usually pay for their own flight when going interstate for a recording, rather than the studio covering it. Original response: twitter.com/CliffordChapin/status/940095605392654336 Natalie Hoover further clarified that paid travel may sometimes occur in union dubs however in general it depends on the project. Original response: twitter.com/nataliehoovervo/status/941390019264176128 Secondly, Caitlin Glass also corrected us on something we said at 10:08. We mentioned that since FUNi has a lot of anime work that aspiring VAs can feasibly move to the Dallas Fortworth area in hopes of mostly working with them. However this does NOT mean that the anime work there will necessarily be enough to make a full living. We did mention that additional jobs would be necessary to cover expenses but yeah in retrospect that doesn't do the reality of it justice. Original response: twitter.com/caitlinsvoice/status/940088135047720961 Also, at 17:07, we had reason to believe that Chris had recorded this cameo at his personal studio but, according to Terri Doty, he had apparently recorded this scene specifically in California twitter.com/TeeDotally/status/940365070495834112 And of course as Erica Mendez pointed out, what this video covers mostly concerns the Texas scene, however there are some aspects that may apply across the board: twitter.com/tsunderica/status/939963488738222080

fun fact: the italian voice actor for vegeta(which is currently one of the most famous VAs in italy, although not many VA get much popularity at all in italy outside of youtube) was just a random dude passing outside the hallway of the dubbing room for the first dragonball z episodes, they needed a new VA for vegeta, and thinking they wouldn't see the guy anymore after the sayan arc the just picked the first guy they could find who was capable of lip-sync to an acceptable degree. turns out walking around random places can give you a lifetime career.

I'm pretty tired of the same predictable casting these days though and the problem is that for same reason these actors re just shoehorned in off availability or through their good agents, rather than genuinely cast for the role anymore. With these actors that have barely any range always getting the leads. Its starting to creep into video games. People just assume those you hear over and over must be good because you hear them in everything in the same roles.

or at least be able to throw their voices around. that english voice actor Vic Mignogna is complete garbage. his voice acting is souless AND he sounds exactly the same for every single character. a good voice actor will change their voice to suit the person. look at Mark Hamil. he voices the iconic Joker but did you know he's also the Fire Lord in the last airbender? no? thats because he can throw his voice around, which means he's a good voice actor. it baffles me how people like english dubs.

THIS!! I'm a musician and what especially bugs me is that the way real people talk, there's so many distinctly unique pitch patterns in existence in all sorts of frequency ranges, yet there's that few handful of frequencies that have been stereotyped to their roles. Airheaded, energetic girl? Mature busty lady with glasses? Tsundere with twin tails and a fang? I bet any anime fan can already picture the voices for these characters and 99% of the time it'll be exact. When dubbing was fairly recent, they had the leeway to experiment more, but now these stereotyped voices have been in use so long that new voice styles stand out uncomfortably so. It ends up being way easier to fallback on the standard voices, even when they don't suit the characters well. It'll still be an "anime voice," something that the majority of dub fans will be fine excusing since it's what they've come to accept. Those of us who want dubs to be taken to the next level are in the minority, so sadly the industry won't likely ever see the need to push the envelope further.
@Spideyman.w
@Spideyman.w 3 жыл бұрын
@@HerroVincey I think the problem is is that back in the day anime characters had more diversity or maybe since anime wasn't popularized in the US changing the voices up wasn't as big of a deal. But now since there's not as much diversity or because subbed anime is so popular now, changing the voices sticks out a lot more.

Actually I'm one of those "few" people who like hearing both newer people and the more experienced voice actors; as long as the dub's good then that's all what matters to me. @Gemnist98
@Gemnist98 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I agree as well. Since dub directors tend to focus on specific patterns (Kyle Phillips, for example, gets new talent and whoever was popular in Fairy Tail for his dubs - which is great because that means Todd Haberkorn stays with Funimation), if I were an ADR director, I would have newcomers take on the main cast and then have veterans play smaller roles, while going for truly the best person when considering breakout characters. It's for this reason, along with overall quality, why Colleen Clinkenbeard is my favorite ADR director in anime. My ultimate dubbing desire, however, is for all actors that have worked with Funimation to be in One Piece - I don't know why, it just sounds cool. Besides, Johnny Yong Bosch appeared for twenty seconds in Fairy Tail but can't appear in One Piece? What heresy is that?

Yeah, I don't want all of the veterans to disappear. (Please note Luffy and Naruto don't have the same voice actor just a hypothetical example). So I go with it and everything is all good.

I disagree. When you hear the same VA in similar roles all the time, you eventually just hear the VA themselves and not the character. All their characters start sounding the same and worse when they end up just using their normal voices for every role.

It's pretty much true that the most famous Japanese VAs are literally in everything. And top stars like Toshiyuki Morikawa voice act not just in anime or video games. They also do dubbing of big Hollywood movies, commercial ad voicework, drama CDs, announcements, etc.

I'm currently taking Chris Rager's voice acting class and I got to experience the difficulties of dubbing. You gotta have control of your pacing while still being able to emote. It's difficult work and you won't always get big roles, especially not starting out. So we should support any up and coming voice actors and give them a chance to prove themselves. Also if you want to be a voice actor, then act. The word actor is still I that title.

alize0623 some of the stories we've been told were pretty cringe inducing. People show up to auditions in their cosplay, others showed up days before their scheduled audition, and they no longer use their open call list because almost none of them were legit voice actors. It has to be either recommendation or agency call.

The Cartoon Cipher guess what all Anime dubs are changed so now they still say the same Sex Jokes just like in the subbed version so their Authentic Japanse voice and the English Language have Merged into one so now we have the redubbed version of Fate stay night in Netflix there is lots of Ejactualtion scenes in it and in Glitter Force in Dark scenes when fighting in the last episodes saga in Season one they say Lesbian Jokes and their Emotional feelings comes out and in Yugioh season 2 in the blimp Tristan and Duke were doing fist fights and Duke said one sex joke that Grils are Dick for Men of action and in Fairy Tail people said so many Sexual jokes to Lucy and Lucy called them Pervert in a loud voice so today's English dubs are different that does not Censor anything they only scatter them around certain scenes so now All Anime are now Authentic Japanse in English Redubbs even in Inuyasha because the old Anime fans who started watching Anime as Kids have grown up so now All Anime has grown with them too so now Anime is both for Kids and Adults and it depends on the Genre like that the shonen version as all boys only as Main Protagonists and in Romantic and action and Fantasy Genre they both have boys and Grils as their own Main Characters for the show make a video about this

Grimoire: Nope, i'm not a weeb. My consumption of anime or japanese culture in general on a yearly basis isn't nearly enough To qualify for weeb-level. In about 50 movies I watch, maybe ONE of them is a japanese production. The same goes for television series. In general i'm kind of turned off to japanese anime because the entire industry suffer from a bad case of tv-tropes. (every single character is an interchangeable stereotype that's practically identical to millions of other characters in different anime) My reason for hating dubs is actually more based on american films and television series. For starters, my english skills wouldn't have been nearly as good as they are if it weren't for subtitles of english speaking films and television series. Second, I prefer immersion when i'm watching fiction. It makes no fucking sense having a bunch of supposedly japanese characters run around and speak in english, if the anime is supposed to take place in Japan. For the same reason, I also hate hollywood productions featuring ancient history (like 300, Troy, Alexander etc.) and every character looks like a blonde american and speak american english. It makes the whole thing unbelievable and unimmersive as fuck.

The point about dubs always casting the same actors is because of overexposure. I like pizza, pizza is delicious, but I would start to hate pizza if I had it for every meal. This is probably the best video I've ever seen that explains dubbing because it's respectful. Thank you so much for that and for handling this with true maturity and understanding, something nobody else has done. I enjoy both subs and dubs but will seek out dubs when I can. Admittedly, big names do draw me in more than smaller ones. If I see Crispin Freeman or J. Micheal Tatum is voicing something, I'm more eager to watch it. Shamefully, I've given the pass to anime with no recognizable names, especially if the plot of the show seems lackluster (though sometimes, explanations don't do justice to the actual show). We are seeing more diversity, slowly, and I should embrace that more because it'd be great to get new voices. I think my biggest dubbing confliction so far was with Eren Jager, Kirito, and Rin from Blue Exorcist all being voiced by the same person. His screamy voice does indeed work for all three of those characters because they pretty much ARE the same character so it makes sense for him to play all of them. But I still was a tiny bit disappointed to not hear someone else for at least one of them. I'm conflicted between "I want something new!" and "Don't fix what isn't broken". Overall, I'll always support dubs and I never want it to go away. On a different note...your editing of this was great! I don't think anyone's praised you on that. At first glance, the clips might seem random but they actually fit for what you're talking about at that moment. You used at least a hundred or more here and that must've been very time-consuming. If you read this, keep up the great work...as difficult as that work might be. It pays off with great content like this :)

They watch with japanese audio first because it's released first and so now it's weird to them when they hear characters they are used to looking, sounding and acting a certain way with different voices and speaking in an entirely different language. I started Boku No Hero Academia in English for the first season and I switched for the second one as soon as I heard it. The voices were just better overall. This idea that the main influence is always habits is false. It's taking one single factor (A real factor, I'll give you that) and making it responsible for too much. I generally like the original version because in media (films, video games and anime) it's most of the time the best one, having worked directly with directors and being the one with the most effort spent on. When it's not the case however, I have no problem switching even if I started with the original version. For example, for FMA:Brotherhood, I directly started with the sub but after giving the english version a try, I switched to that one because I liked it better which is an example of "first heard is better" not being a rule. It's particularly true as far as sub version in anime are concerned. To get into sub requires an effort. Of course you get used to it and it end up flowing as naturally as the dub at some point, but you need a reason to even start going down that path. That reason is very often that people are able to form opinions on the quality of a voice that's independent from other consideration like "which did I hear first".

Whatever I hear the mangas better anyway It's why these people always complain about dubs being "unfaithful" (even though almost all modern ones are extremely faithful to the source material sometimes to the point of absurdity) yet their favourite ones are usually DBZ, Yu Yu hakusho and Pokemon

I understand the reasoning, but at least for me, it doesn't change the fact that it's completely immersion breaking to hear Ed from FMA or Ichigo from Bleach playing the lead role in another anime using the exact same voice. I think part of the issue is a lack of range for some of the VAs, I don't care WHO's doing the voice acting as long as it's not the exact same voice they always use. Good video btw, it's really interesting to see the reasons behind this.

I've always thought it was strange that people complain about hearing the same voices a lot. For me, if the voice fits the character, I don't care who it is or if I've heard them voice someone else before. I both enjoy learning about and hearing newcomers, and finding out that one of my favorite voice actors is voicing a new character. I'll never complain about who's voicing who unless their voice just doesn't fit. It seems stupid to do otherwise. A lot of the veterans are veterans because they're just that good. And a lot of newcomers fly under the radar because people assume they're someone else when they're not.
@TadpoleSuperhero

And to that I'd mostly disagree, on two grounds: 1) English actors don't necessarily have a more limited range, but are often brought on for the same types of performances (something you see a lot in Western cartoons and animated movies - the same actors seem to play the same roles a lot, and featurettes will tell you that actor was picked because they've been typecast) 2) I just disagree that English voice actors don't match the characters very often. But that's down to personal tastes and how people hear things, so I'm not going to say you're wrong (because you're not), we just hear things differently and have different perceptions on what fits and doesn't. I've heard plenty of performances in both Japanese and English where I just don't feel they fit the character, but those also are thankfully the minority, in my opinion, both in Japanese and in English.

I want to say "as long as the dub SOUNDS good, I'll be alright." But everytime I hear a vetraen like chris I just go "oh hi picollo" and continue watching as if I seen this type of character before. Its just somehow, if a vetrean plays a character type I haven't heard them as, they some how make it work. Take Jon bosh(I always butcher his name) for example. He is most well known for doing ichigo from bleach, a semi-hard headed character. But he also did yukimura sanada in both sengoku basara AND samurai warriors. a semi-poetic prodigy who takes his lessons he learned on the battlefield to heart. Also I do listen to subs more than dubs now, but when I watch a new dubed anime and hear all these new actors, it throws me off guard. Some are good dubs, others feel like they threw in new actors just because. Sort of a take it(stay dub) or leave it (stay sub) situation. But I understand why this is now thanks to this video. Thank you for making this. You guys are honestly better than diggibro and jeff. I'm not saying that to throw shade. They are biased anime channles in my opinion. You guys look at the whole picture. c:

We already had enough harsh comments, roasting and dead threats from the sub only fans.The only way to have a sub vs dub healthy argument is to have the same amount of people supporting each side and to be considerate and well mannered to each other. Well done and informative. More intriguing issue is why Japanese studios can not hire an English voice actor for English sentences. I mean they've got more budget and revenue, can't they just keep a few as pets in Japan instead of torturing people with horrible Engrish? Its effect is especially devastating when characters are impressed by it or when it's supposed to be serious work like Psycho Pass the movie. Even if those were the same 4 people it would be better. Or find an English-Japanese bilingual, though it would be much harder as only Nano comes to my mind and she is a singer.

Norio wakamoto always plays the manly man,Rie kugumiya always plays the pissed loli. Tomokazu Sugita always plays the slacker/himself. Mamarou miyano always plays the crazy guy or the best freind.Matsuoka yoshitsugu always plays the harem MC. Eri Kitamura always plays teenage boys.Nobuyuki Hiyama always plays the loner,Megumi ogata always plays the coward or lady killer. Inori Minase tends to play deadpan / monotone characters,Arai Satomi always plays supporting characters. Just pointing out this double standard,japan does the exact same thing,I don't see anyone complaining though. Hypocrites.

The thing is, when they watch subs they can't tell who's who on the Japanese end. They hear foreign noises and read subtitles, it's not like they can actually gauge the actor's identity or ability, unless it's a distinguished voice. The only reason they bitch about this situation for dubs is because it's more obvious, because they actually understand the language.

@@impacc4182 They sound like they're speaking in a comic book font. It's like the actors seem to constantly try to make the character sound cool, and it gets in the way of inserting emotion into the character. You get the Sonic effect of a character sounding pretentious and cool even in a scene where they're meant to be experiencing immense fear or torment. Have you even heard a convincing scream of terror in an anime dub? IMO they always sound like they're mocking someone else's scream.

A great informative video as always buddy. I enjoyed your previous video regarding dubs and I was indeed surprised that you got more under your belt. Now on to the video, yes IT IS justified why voice actors are being reused but that does not mean there is room for improvement. I was very happy that you referenced Einshine the dub hater like many other dub haters to debunk HIS feelings NOT facts about dubs. Remember facts don't care about feelings, and the facts are dubs are still improving overtime and there will be no stop to it as there will be more passionate people that will input their creativity. After all the practice of anime dubbing is still young if you put that sector next to American voice over, seiyuus ovice over, teatrical acting, on-screen acting, etc. Heck probably some poeple would be surprised if you told them that the film industry is 100 YEARS OLD, older than their grandparents.

Something people need to also keep in mind is where voice actors/actresses and the studios are stationed. Japan will have them in mostly Tokyo or somewhere in the Kansai District (where cities like Kyoto are). The time it takes to go from Tokyo to the far end of the Kansai district is about 4hrs with public transit. It would take a few days to do that going from Texas to California or New York, and flying is expensive.

It's not as common anymore, but at one point it sort of was. In the mid 2000s there were multiple actors that overly used. Todd Haberkorn and Vic Mignogna were very common. It's not their fault though, English dubs are incredibly niche and underappreciated. They also don't have the time or money to get even more voice actors. Currently that's changing . Dubs keep getting better and better, people appreciate them more. I know some sub elitist that really prefer the dub of My Hero Academia over the subs and other newer shows too. I feel like that's an acomplisment.

I don't even pay attention to the dub actor's names usually, but off the top of my head I could name a dozen characters to Todd Haberkorn, Vic Mcnugget, Young Bosch, and a fair few others. My favorite English Dub voice actors have to be Johnny Yong Bosch, Vic Mignona, Michael J. Tatum, Brina Palancia, and a couple other voice actors I can’t think of off the top of my head right now lol. One of my favorite KZbinrs, NateWantsToBattle aka Nathan Sharp, started doing English Dub voice acting and got his first major role as Yoshichicka Tsurugi in Luck and Logic in 2016. He also voices several other anime characters as well, with his most recent being Axel Blaze and Hunter Foster in Inazuma Eleven: Ares. I think he’s pretty good at voice acting. I will admit, not perfect, but he’s definitely getting there! I hope to hear more from him in the anime industry soon!
