Took up metal detecting 2 wks ago , i bought myself an XP Deus , I know the odds of findings gold/silver coins are about the same odds as winning the Lottery . I bought this metal detector to find iron , steel or whatever of lesser value . I just want to find something interesting now and again , I like the feeling that when i find something i think to myself " someone stood on this very spot " wither it be 50 , 100 or maybe more years ago . It gives me the goosebumps
@Addictedtobleeps6 жыл бұрын
Hi, Peter! Actually, the chances of you finding silver is pretty high. Gold, a little less so. You've got a brilliant machine there, and it's only a matter of time. But yes, the historical stuff is as interesting, or even more interesting in other ways.

I share my finds with anyone who's intrested. I pull our my phone a show my finds sometimes in videos other times in pictures . Out of the many who see my finds I'm quick to tell them it's not easy. If you plan to do metal detected be aware that the success rate is very low . Most of the time you'll go home with a pocket full of modern coins . I do say it's about the thrill of the hunt and the chance to be outside and enjoy nature . The reward is exercise and occasionally something spectacular and valuable. Bottom line most people won't do it no matter what . Getting a thrill when you find something valuable is addicting. I find metal detecting very relaxing . Thanks for the video Big Mex from California USA

This is so true I started metal detecting with a friend we bought a garret together but after searching for about 3 hours he gave up and now 2 years later I am the only one that uses the metal detector and still didn't find anything nice not even a modern coin but just doing metal detecting is something that I love sure it is nice when I find something nice but that's not the reason why I metal detect
@SilverSteveDetecting8 жыл бұрын
I think one of the main reasons is the huge difficulty of finding permissions, even after watching all the guides including yours when I started out it drove me to quit, because every answer was a "no", and after putting in so much effort to go home with several "no" responses for weeks on end was extremely depressing and aided in losing all motivation to continue the hobby. But after several months out, the bug is always there, and I now look for other ways to enjoy the hobby by planning on going to rallies and such, and just hope one day I pick up those permissions :)

This video is awesome! I watch heaps of videos on metal detecting and want to start up, but everyone just shows the rings they find rather then showing how long it took to find that. This video is actually really helpful in the sense that, once I start, I can't just give up because I didn't find "treasure" straight away.

I gave up the hobby about 25 years ago. I had a nice White's detector, paid about a grand for it. But it was HEAVY. I've got a bad back, and after 30 minutes of swinging the detector my back would start hurting like crazy. That took all the fun out of it. I gave up and sold the detector. BUT all these years later I've started watching KZbin videos and my interest has peaked again. I bought a nice little Teknetics Delta detector that weighs nothing. Once the ground thaws out I'm going to give it another try. Thanks for the video. :-)

I'm always pleased when a video is made showing the hobby 'like it is'. Hoards and other exciting things are not everywhere and many fields seem to contain nothing but old iron junk. Even if there is something, you have to walk over it and swing the detector in exactly the right place to get a signal. People often don't really understand just how small the coil's detecting field is once you get down to six inches or so! Sometimes the iron can mask the good stuff so you have to get the iron out first. I've been detecting for two years on and off and have only just found my first Victorian silver sixpence. Maybe I'm getting the hang of it I thought - and next day I found relatively little but still a naval button from the Napoleonic Wars era. This is one of those 'keep trying' hobbies and if you ask those successful detectorists what they've found the answer will be 'loads of junk and some good stuff - and it took many hours to find the good stuff'. Thanks again for the frank comments.

Great video as always Kris, you're spot on about unrealistic expectations, for me and a good few detectorists I know, the joy isn't in finding 'treasure' tho I like to joke about it, it's finding things that are interesting, even if that is just something I don't know what it is and I go away and research, be it a button, a badge, coin or even a gate hook.

Trouble is watching KZbin videos and basing expectations on them. Reality is as pointed out in the comments you may go out for 4 hours and find nothing, but the next time you go out for an hour you find something. I started and in the first 2 months I found two gold rings, forward on three years and finds have gone down and no more gold rings.last winter I was out 4 hours a week down local beach with minimal finds. Land searches are more fruitful with beaches as a backup. Beaches will have all been detected over the years and probably days before you detect. Try and detect smart and push your detectors capability as far as it will go. Dont expect to find too much but dont give up. Give yourself 3 months rather than 3 detecting sessions before you decide if the hobby is for you. It's a good hobby as it gets you out the house and in the fresh air.

I stay with it for the thrill of "Its bound to happen, when you least expect it" Land Finds in 2017 1. Hundreds of Coins, 3 knives, 1 silver Necklace, 1 Titanium ring, cellphone, bullets, trinkets lots of nails and bottle caps. Underwater Finds (Those are gold mines) Swimming holes, Shallow kayak/Canou docking areas, Rope Swing Areas 6 Cellphones, 5 watches, 2 wallets, 4 necklaces, 10 earings, 2 rings (Gold 18k and a Silver Ring) 8 knives, hundreds of Coins, Tackle. Other stuff too. If you have shallow water in your area where people swim and hang out. Those are hot spots. Imo i get better overall results from underwater hunting in hotspots. 90% of the time someone drops something underwater they never retrieve it. 70% of the time on land people will notice something fell and retrieve it . Its all mathmatics and process of elimination and averages. You got to do the research and have a game plan. When you do. It turns into an adventure everytime.

Answer is very simple ! After purchasing a detector and ringing your local club they inform you that the club is a closed group and absolutely no places will be available for around 20 yes that's right 20 years and the club has ALL the permissions for miles in every direction ! More than one of the club work for the local authority ( council ) and actively work to inhibit other detectorists from taking up the hobby !

As you said - expectation exaggerated by tube vids. The reality is you won't find a Saxon or Roman item if the Saxons or Romans never went near that bit of land! You are most likely to find bits of shrapnel, nuts and bolts that fell off machinery, horse-shoes, nails, etc. If you don't look at the ground you are standing on, you won't see the flint tool or pot sherd from the stone age, because flint and pot doesn't trigger a detector!

Experience tells it all. And if you are honest and do it from the heart it's wonderful. After a few months maybe a year I'm still playing in my garden, been digging and finding "nice stuff" not :) maybe some interesting ones. One day will post my pics. but so far I collected a bucket full of glass, garden and rusty metal bits and 2 bin bags of rubbish :)

How do you think coins and thimbles end up out in the middle of fields like that?

Really enjoy your channel. You actually make me laugh out loud! “... salute three times to the magpie “. Lol! I’m so new to this, I don’t even have a detector yet. I’ve recently moved to the coast here in Northern California, and beginning my homework before I make a purchase. I’m a new subscriber and look forward to viewing more episodes. Any advice from anyone would be greatly appreciated! Thank you
