Whenever our border collie, Maggie stares at us, we ask her simple questions such as potty, play, walk, drive, bedtime until she responds with her "yes please" circle. She came up with her own version of yes and it is soo cute! she does a full 360 turn twice and then prances in place.

You are the smartest doggie-mum. Dogs use very specific body language to communicate. I did not own a collie, but a very smart, beautiful mix. I taught her all her directions - left, right, up, underneath, around and how to say yes and no. She nodded yes and did a no-no head shake, pointed to whatever she wanted and knew the names of all the rooms in the house, objects like the couch, the bed, the fridge, her bowl, the names of each of her toys, people's names, her favourite places to go names like the park, the beach, etc. Now that is the basic functions of a human being. Dogs are experts at body language - they read us like a book. We humans can be blind and insensitive. We can learn so much from dogs - trust, kindness, open, loving hearts, a keenness to learn and understand the other. Dogs are just smart and very special to live in a cruel human world and to still care about us. They are precious gifts.

It’s funny you would think that but each dog is unique and I had a mix breed of god knows what the only thing I knew was she had border collie. She is the best dog ever. We got her at 2 yrs old and she already was calm, independent, and perfect for us. We never looked for a breed just a dog that had the right temperament. Turns out my doggo named JJ fit that. She can be a couch potato and also loves running but she isn’t the type to need the full amount of exercise as a normal border collie and enjoys chilling by the window. We’ve had her for about 7 years now and we love her to death. She also is super smart like a border collie and knows body language well and it is impressive how kind she is considering what she probably went through in the shelter, through moving through families such as the foster to us, and whatever happened for her to loss 2 teeth and damage 1 with a scar across her lip. She is nervous but never aggressive probably because she trusts us and I always work with her to get used to people by teaching people how to approach her and her looking at me for guidance and knowing I am ok with people

i have an australian kelpie and they are similar to collie dogs, i assume they used collie dogs to breed them in the beginning. it depends where he is starring from, on the bed in the middle of winter he wants his little mini blanket thrown over him, yeah he has his own little blanket !!!. he cant talk so he just stares at me thinking i need to learn to be a mind reader. i love that dog but he can be a pest some times ???, but overall we understand each other and i work hard at relieving him of his boredom which is actually painful for collies and kelpies !!!

Sadly, I lost my Gyp a couple of months ago. After watching your video, I can still see "those" stares. If I got a "stare" - I just said time for wee weeeees. Then he thundered down the stairs and waited at the front door. (We have a huge spread of grass and trees out side) The difference between dogs and bitches is that a bitch will go outside, do her wees and come in. A DOG however, has to sniff at every blade of grass, pass a drip then onto the next ...Oh, we had so much fun together. BTW, loved watching your dogs. (Those eyes!)

yeah my dog has to piss on every tree he passes and lamp post as well ??? i suspect he is marking his territory, some owners don't like that, but i say let him fulfil his natural instincts if it makes him happy, he is a dog after all and if letting him piss on what ever he wants to then so be it, as long as he is happy, it is all secret doggy business anyway, who knows why they really do it, but it cost me nothing to let him sniff and piss on everything when we walk, he is always off lead anyway so i don't have to go out of my way to accommodate him, he has been off lead nearly all his long life, he is 9 years old already, but being off lead suits him and me just fine !!! he is happy to be off lead and running from one pissing spot to the next, but unfortunately when he sniffs vigorously he starts to drool and that is an unpleasant sight, i get a stick off the ground and brush it off when it gets to much, that's my only complaint, but i can live with it, which is lucky because there is no fixing it at all, just brushing the drool off ???

I have a question- what happens if you stare dogs in the eye for too long. Will they react? 🤔
@TheDogVlog
@TheDogVlog 4 жыл бұрын
Many dogs will react by either staring back or showing signs of stress (lip licking, looking away, sniffing etc). People sometimes think this is a way to show a dog you are the "leader" but it actually stresses dogs out. If you are the dog's owner and you are just looking at the dog they don't usually feel pressured. But a continuous stare, especially from a stranger, can provoke a bad reaction from many dogs.
@charlesmartin1121

In our dog play group, which has a few Border Collies, I have often returned their stares without any negative effect. On the other hand when doing so I am not approaching them. I think you are making people unnecessarily afraid, especially as Border Collies are known for their characteristic stares.
@TheDogVlog
@TheDogVlog 2 жыл бұрын
Which part of the video came across as scary to you? Yes some dogs won't react negatively to staring and many others do. It really depends on how you define staring. Unblinking stillness directed towards another is something none of my dogs have enjoyed. It's something to consider when approaching a dog, especially if you don't know the dog. I would like more people to learn how to approach dogs in a way that makes dogs comfortable, and sometimes that means not even approaching at all. We can be much less afraid of dogs if we learn more about their body language and what makes them comfortable and uncomfortable. And yes every dog is an individual.
@charlesmartin1121
@charlesmartin1121 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheDogVlog I am not practicularly afraid of dogs in general. That said I treat them with respect, and would never approach a dog without conversing with their owner first. If you want to give a good safety tip, tell children to never hug a dog by draping themselves over the animal's hindquarters. Dogs like wolves see this as a dominance move, and may react aggressively.
@TheDogVlog

@@TheDogVlog The advice you offered at the end, I felt could be taken by some individuals to act in a sheepish manner around meeting a new dog. I have found from experience that dogs, being socially astute animals, can pick-up on hesitancy and may interpret it as fearfulness. Sometimes with negative results. Approaching a new dog with a calm confident demeanor is best, which can include some eye contact (though obviously not a stare). Have a good day.

They are all winners in my book 👍I'm glad I've learned not to stare dogs in the eye. I've met lots of dogs that aren't happy that their parents didn't tell them their house is for sale.
@TheDogVlog
@TheDogVlog 4 жыл бұрын
Yes lots of people don't know about approaching new dogs and that many don't like eye contact. And I'll bet you do meet a few unhappy dogs - strangers coming into the house can be confusing especially if it didn't happen much previously. I had a flood so will be having my flooring replaced. That should be interesting - have had reno's with previous dogs and it can be a bit scary for them. So I'll have to come up with a plan for the dogs and I. Might be in the car a lot! lol

there often to smart for there own good at times, it would be better to have a plain dog sometimes than a professor for a dog, they are just so keen and alert not much gets past there keen attention. they are just keen and ready to go, they just want action and adventure, boredom is their number one enemy and a board border collie dog is trouble or about to become trouble they will find some sort of adventure, the lesson is find as many games, puzzles and amusement's as you can for your dog, if they suffer too much boredom they will become delinquent dogs and they will be ruined !!! i keep my australian kelpie well amuse, his favourite toy is the remote control high speed buggy he loves to round up, and it gives him an excellent work out, he huffs and puffs chasing that high speed buggy, but he needs many games and toys to keep him stimulated and away from long screeches of boredom !!! dont let a border collie get too board for too long, it makes them crazy and they will become insane pests !!!
