Why Do Border Collies Nip?
Border Collies are dogs that are especially prone to nipping, for a variety of reasons. They are a movement oriented dog, originally bred mainly for their herding talents. So it's not surprising that they sometimes will nip a child or person who is moving quickly. This doesn't mean they are vicious, but it's also a behaviour that is not appropriate in a family setting.
Here are some ideas on why border collies nip and a few tips on what to do about it. Understanding more about the border collie breed and typical breed behaviour can help you to understand and communicate more effectively with your dog. These are special dogs that need some special understanding.

i tried to get help early in my dogs life because i couldn’t curb her nipping/ biting, i had to get to telling her no because calm redirect wasn’t working. she will suddenly jump on my husband and nip him, i no longer use the no but instead put her in a lie down. she’s 19 months and back to having a lead on inside because i have to be able remove her from the situation. she still does some back talk with barking. i taught her a few months ago to sit if she wants me to play….but if i’m not in the room it’s a different story. last week she put her mouth on my 7 year old granddaughter to get her to reach a ball behind a fence. she didn’t bite but it upset my granddaughter, this is probably not the right dog for our family….we love her and will continue to try to make this work. i do appreciate your specific breed information. i suspected her behavior was herding, this is my first herding dog, always golden retrievers and labs before…..VERY different breed tendencies. 😟

I stumbled upon your channel some time ago, and I hecking love it! The whole game show thing is hilarious (and cute as well), you show a deep knowledge of border collies and to top it all you seem like a wonderful person! While we do have a border collie (either mix or a working one, he is an owner surrender), your videos help us mostly with our other dog - he is 4 years old, a malinois, has literally zero skills due to him being on a chain, then cooped up in crate (he did not even know what stairs are). Teaching him how to integrate back after so much time alone sometimes feels impossible, and I really want to thank you for your videos, because they have given me patience and understanding in times when I felt like ripping my hair out.

Aw... it can be so hard, I know. Thank you for giving your malinois a second chance in life. It's small steps at first, at the dog's pace. One small step at a time can lead to great things. Wishing you the very best of luck! Hang in there.

@@TheDogVlog thank you again, and you are right, those small steps will add up in time into a big journey. This whole thing is most likely the biggest and most important patience lesson of my life (yet).

I re-homed a BC from Dogs Trust. The reason he was placed there was because he bit the owner's child. I am so pleased that he did! because we would never have met and he would never have had a proper home, with me.

Sooooo… I have a 3 months and a half girl border collie puppy. She really bites me and my family a lot, especially when we’re sitting or trying to put her harness on/off or washing her with a cloth after a walk. But in general, she really nips and nibbles and bites and pulls clothes A LOT (not with strangers though, only with closer people). I think she has this problem because we adopted her two weeks too early without knowing it could be bad for her education; also her mom had 16 puppies and very few experience and I think her breeders weren’t that good either. I’ve tried EVERYTHING on the internet and it doesn’t seem to stop. She understands commands really well but that’s the one thing she doesn’t want to do. I mean, she’s still very young and probably her teeth hurt, but what do you suggest me to do? I’m desperate

Super game show set up. You’re adorable too. We would make great friends but my border collie is kind of a b**** lol. That’s why I’m watching your videos. She’s a pandemic girl and wasn’t properly socialized. I have to put this into consideration when even inviting someone over which is ridiculous. and if I separate her from us she just howls. So it’s just too much and I don’t invite anyone over. A new one we just learned was I was sitting and my roommate came up and put his hands on my shoulders and she started growling and put herself inbetween us. Uh oh. I have a very over protective girl on my hands. They live in the same house! But she’s my whole world and best friend.

Have you tried keeping her separate but within visual distance. For example behind a gate or in a wire pen? I recently had 2 of my dogs crated while my plumber did some work on the sink. They just watched him. :D

@TheDogVlog

The best thing to manage these situations so that your border collie isn't able to chase or nip when children or others are running. If dogs rehearse behaviours constantly they generally will continue to repeat them. Not giving them the opportunity to do the behaviour is the first important step to changing a pattern. In the house you can gate off an area or use an x-pen, or contained area.

I have a BC mix. I badly want him just to be who his is. he does nip. He'll nip my rat terrier for falling behind in walks around the park. He also goes nuts when I have to pick up the smaller dog and carry her for short distances. She old, plus there's a few non shaded areas. He'll hurl himself against me. nip various parts of me and the smaller dog in my arms. I find it funny at time from other times not so much. Yesterday he nipped at the smaller dog and she lunged at him with a bark. he stopped, so that was good to see. I couldn't help but lmao about it. he's a mess. and they love each other.

Sometimes dogs get nippy when they are overstimulated. My youngest BC will get really excited when I pick up my cat. One tip is to leash your dog inside the house (under your supervision) or contain them in an area so they can't continually bounce around and get themselves too excited. The other thing that can be helpful is disengagement games. These are games that teach your dog that it pays to focus on you and the activities you give the dog, and not on the environment (or the small dog). I have a loose leash walking video that demonstrates one kind of game. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mWTOhGiEfsuAmM0 I'm glad you have a sense of humour about it! We all need that with our dog struggles.

@@TheDogVlog I really want him to be an off the leash dog like all mine have been. I think it's the park that really gets him crazy. But after a bit of walking he does calm quite a bit. Unless I pick up the smaller dog. lol My smaller dog is named Kayla. And while we're walking I would tell him as a joke "Bucky, if I pick up Kayla we can go a lot faster." But now I only make up to "Bucky, if I pick---" and he's jumping up on me. He then always goes back to where she is lagging behind and prods her on with a light nip or even pushing her. So I'm definitely encouraging the behavior. I need to tone him down. I agree about games. I need to do that more. He's a blast to play with. Learns so fast. He's a rescue. He already knew shake paw. I taught him the difference between his left and right very very quickly. I even screwed up at first and had to restart so he would do his own left and right from his perspective. But he's about 99% perfect on that.

@@TheDogVlog I have a separate question about something he did Sunday. I plan to ask around about this behavior. We have stray cats I feed. He gets along with them. He's never been vicious towards them. Well, one of the strays had some kittens and only 1 survived. They sleep on a piece of carpet toward to the back of the carport. The bc has been curious about this kitten and will go over to look. I tell him not to get too close since the mother cat will hiss but only if he does get close. Sunday the kitten somehow made his way to just outside the door to the carport where me and bucky come in and out. As we passed the kitten went into his scary act, splaying his paws, silent hissing and that funny spitting they they do. Bucky was very curious of this but I was telling him to keep back. But before I realized what was happening he picked the kitten up by the back of it's neck and carried it a few feet away to the rear of the car. The kitten was freaking out a bit at this. I yelled at him and he put the kitten down. The kitten had a fear reaction and became unconscious for a short time. The mother cat was very distraught as she inspected the kitten. I put Bucky indoors and went back out. The kitten eventually came out of it and the mother cat calmed quickly when she realized the kitten was just fine. Things are back to normal. I don't think Bucky ever meant to hurt the kitten but I'm not sure. I know dogs and other animals kill by biting the neck from the bottom not the top. They use the top sometimes to carry baby animals around. But on the other hand, bucky likes chasing squirrels and barks at them in the backyard when they are on the other side of the fence.
