My puppy that we got when I was 4 has always licked me significantly more than the other 4 members of my family. Even 14 years later, she won't even lick my mom's feet for more than a second, but I've sat on the floor with her licking my feet, arms, and legs for 30 minutes straight before. And it's not that she doesn't love the rest of my family, because she's a sweetheart of a black lab and she loves everyone. She just only licks me. I think it might be because she sees everyone else in the family as an alpha, and me as someone to take care of, since I was so small when we got her. We jokingly call her my twin, because that's how she treats me sometimes.

Whenever I feel that a dog is going to lick me i show negative emotions and facial expressions which gives them sign that I do not like it, so they suddenly stops and do something else to win my heart.

I only have to say "kiss" for my Aussie buddy to lick my face. And even without that, if I get too close to his head while, say, brushing him, he randomly starts licking me. He's a very affectionate dog too, always up for a cuddle, some caresses or a scratching session. And since I spend a lot of time doing that with him, licking is probably his way of showing appreciation.

My GSD, Maggie - eats cat crap and gets the kitty litter in her intestines. Her heart rate skyrockets as a result and she hyperventilates for a few hours. I don't know why she does it. She knows not to. I've never had such a stupid German shepherd dog before. Thinking about it now. She's probably inbred. My 2nd GSD, Gunther - was shipped from Germany. Smartest dog I owned.

I saw a television program stating that the reason a dog licks your face or more specifically your mouth is because it’s from their wolf hereditary, in the wild, a dog licks it’s parents mouth to encourage regurgitation of food that has been gathered by the parents, so, by licking your mouth, this is their way of connecting with their “parental” owners. I might be wrong, but, that’s my understanding.

I have 3 little boys, 1 15yo chihuahua mutt and 2 twin 5yo Maltese mutts and my 15yo cookie who I’ve had since 2nd grade (I’m 20, I got him 13 years ago and he’s always been my best friend sleeping in bed, family trips etc. and he’s actually laying on me as I type this he’s my little man) he has always been a overly affectionate dog but only with me, he use to be a huge biter and would bite my mom for waking me up for school or if someone tried to hug me and he has calmed down but he still bites my boyfriend if we wrestle, but he’s never been like that for anyone else just me. When we got him he chose to sleep in my bed I didn’t insist on it and he was my first little dog so I wasn’t use to that. He has always kissed me, he does it when he wakes up, if I lay by his face, if I talk to him in a happy voice, when I get home, and he even knows the word kiss and will kiss me if I say Mommie kisses, he does it basically all day everyday and when I got my 2 Maltese’s Andy and Oppy, Andy was a nervous shy puppy and he kisses me easily and from the start (and I obviously praised them for it) but Oppy was more outgoing and a everyone kinda dog and he would only do it if I got him super excited. So I decided to almost train him to kiss me, I noticed he would only kiss my nose and forehead so when I started only kissing his forehead and cheeks instead of all over his face, but mainly his forehead and over time if I would kiss his forehead he would kiss mine back. Now years later they all lather me in kisses when I get home, wake up, talk in a happy voice to them, give them pets while laying face to face and I know I showed Oppy how to kiss and that I enjoyed it by praising him and doing it how he wanted instead of all over and stressing him out with that and in return he kisses me like crazy. It doesn’t matter what this video or any other says I believe they do it out of love and praise. This video actually missed the number 1 reason dogs lick us. It's because of deeply ingrained doggy social behavior. In the wild, canine pups will lick returning pack members around the mouth to stimulate regurgitation of food. This is how adults carry food back home from the hunt. If you notice when a dog goes to lick, they are almost always going for the mouth. Domesticated dogs have been selectively breed for thousands of years to maintain these puppy like traits into adulthood because these are the traits that have kept them docile and tame. This is why puppies tend to lick so obsessively. But the behavior gradually decreases as a dog's get older and more mature (usually depends on the breed).
