@@chriswf The assembly of the cellphone at Foxconn in China is but 1 to 2% of the value of the phone. And Foxconn doesn't use children. So who supplies the 98 to 99% of the value of the phone? Makers of the components, such as the boards, the processors and the display. They all come in from South Korea, Germany and other countries. Flown in for just in time production and flown out as finished cellphones.

@@LV_CRAZY isn't Foxconn the place where their labor practices are basically slavery? I haven't read much about them in a long time, but I think I remember they used to have a TON of suicides there because they were pretty much enslaving people. But that might be old news. Anyway, I think it's the lithium and battery manufacturing that uses the child labor the most. Not just for phones, but all lithium based batteries.

@@chriswf Foxconn has changed. I believe you are thinking of the cobalt used in lithium batteries, some cobalt being mined with child labor in Africa. There is a Consortium of so-called ethical lithium battery manufacturers that ban child sourced Cobalt. And cobalt free batteries are coming out.

I have two battery packs. One is the Luna pack 13.5 ah using LG cells and it gets about 1150 watts max fully charged . The other pack I have which a 6ah purchased from yours truly JNO , has samsung cells and it gets close to the 1300 w max on my bbs02 , I see 1250 or so when fully charged going up the same steep hill behind my house. Samsung 30q cells push by bbs02 to 1250 watts or so while the LG MJ1 cells push it to around 1130-1150 or so range.

Years ago there was a lot of truth to this. No longer. I am not talking battery capacity or weight. There are minor differences there. I have yet to disassemble a generic battery that did not have Samsung or Panasonic cells anyway. Because they have to mass produce these now, mfg processes are more and more standardized. There is not a significant difference in quality of assembly from a mfg. The odds of a battery fire, from a factory battery that is not attached wrong, damaged or charged with the wrong charger, is a whole lot lower than the odds of being killed on your bike. Nearly all reported e-bike fires are actually e-mopeds. An amazing percentage are being over charged in homemade charging stations. Other than them, home made (hand made) batteries, aftermarket "rapid chargers," cracked cases and questionable connections, account for nearly all battery fires.

I have to add für the people, which are reading this, that it’s not completely correct. Yes, there is a difference between cheap Chinese cells and good quality cells, and I would advise everyone always to use the good known one (Samsung, LG, Panasonic…) but you can’t just say that they need to cost 4$ and more. I use the Samsung 50E cells and buy them for 3,50€ from an official store. Bigger manufacturer will always get good Rabatte when they take some thousands of cells. A simple maths shows, that for example car maker pay under 1$ for a cell and they surely don’t use the Chinese one. The next thing is, that I agree, that a not properly build battery pack is very dangerous but it surely doesn’t cost 200$. When you know how to handle high voltage and high current it’s actually really easy to build the battery pack and unless you are not a big brand like Bosch, you will use every time the same Chinese housing and Chinese BMS and so on. In the end there is no need for paying 200 ore 300$ more. This will not guarantee you any quality. It’s better to see if the seller lists which cells are being used and what’s the reputation or feedback of the seller.

This past week when doing research on hydraulic disc brakes for electric brakes, I came across a seller that recommended against me using the same brakes included on super expensive premade brakes on any ebike. Also when asking if the brake levers were left or right, they didn't answer until I asked three times. I got my BBS02 from you. You clearly know more than the seller of my front hub motor. I had to try si many different tools before figuring out that T20 Security is the right tool for the hub motor disc brakes. Amazon sellers don't always know everything and you are definitely at risk of getting something that doesn't work. I got refunded for a bike that came with a bent front fork and the seat post also got stuck inside the frame. Big frame scratches too.

better brakes are always the choice for e bikes My little carbon folder tops out at about 35mph/50kph. This is with little 20inch skinny tires the last thing you want is bad brakes at 30+ mph If you have the opportunity go with good disc brakes everytime . I live in a very hilly area , at most times I'm full stop on both brake levers going down steep inclines. They work very well

It's also a logistics issue. Small low volume sellers simply won't have the ability to buy like the brands selling 10's of thousands of products. If I buy a motor kit locally I might have to pay twice as much to buying through a Chinese seller who maybe ships from the UK or Europe. I doubt if the factory door price of those decent cells are $7 that is probably the price for small volume buyers, it could be high volume buyers pay only $4 maybe less. I mean walmart sold a very basic ebike I think for $399 if I remember rightly. You break down all the components plus shipping, tariffs, profit etc you probably have no more than $50 for the included battery. Samsung do a very safe abuse-able cell that is not particularly energy dense which features in a lot of battery packs as its a recognised brand. The battery pack will end up a bit heavier than battery packs with better more advanced cells but still a good option. Any complete ebike sold in the UK, Europe and US through normal retail channels (not personal imports) has to go through the certification process and the cells will have to be fully certified i.e. properly tested to be legally sold even those super cheap walmart ebikes. However on aliexpress sellers have filled cells with sand (not kidding) on some battery packs and powerbanks. It's like only half the cells are real cells and the rest is just padding. That's why its important to take your time if buying on aliexpress and go with the sellers with very positive reviews and a high number of sales if you are trying to save money. Also I think some of the Chinese cells are ok, they aren't all bad but many are unfortunately. Some of the complete ebikes sold at retail across Europe, US etc do have Chinese cells. I bought a couple of battery packs from ebay before the pandemic. Ebay had a 15% off code at the time and the seller offered a generous discount if you buy two battery packs. They have the basic Samsung cells in a Hailong case. I think I paid £150 each approx possibly slightly less and they were 48V 12.5Ah. I think now I'd be lucky to pay less than £230 each.

I bought an Aventon Level, 48V. The battery pack failed right at the 2 year warrantee point. After the dealer got them to say they would replace it, they never did. They want $500 for a replacement. Why would I buy a replacement from them when the original was a POS? I don't think it was the battery cells that failed, more likely the circuit board. I've gone back to using my pedal bike. It cuts how far I can go. The E bike is worthless W/O a battery. Is there a circuit board control that I can buy?

The mantra of ‘avoid burning your house down’ is not just rhetoric. As an investigator, I have been to houses that have burnt to the ground as a result of cheap lithium batteries. One unfortunate bloke had just received some generic batteries in the mail and left them to charge while he ducked out. He returned home several hours later to find his family house ablaze. We later identified the charging point as the point of origin for the fire. Saving a few dollars for cheap battery packs is not worth the risk.

Sounds cheap but you didn't even say the voltage (48V, 52V?). So if the battery cells alone cost ~£250 or more how would they pay for the battery pack itself and the worker who put it together? That means the cells are way cheaper than £250 and the pack too and worker likely wasn't very skilled since their isn't much money left over either when you add it up. Maybe listen to the video because it answered your question already. You bought a cheap battery.

I've always had excellent service from them and most of what they sell is up to the mark, as long as you don't expect miracles. The best advice is always read the reviews before purchasing. I've noticed you can very easily get packs from Ali that come without a case, they seem to be half the price or less than a 'good' battery like a UPP ( loius rossmans exploded though ). I don't make my own because the individual cells cost a LOT of money particularly the high discharge rate ones, theres some sort of conspiracy to keep people from buying individual cells and to jack up the price. I just let the expert at the factory deal with all that trouble, they have the experience and specialized tools that makes it way easier and cheaper than to DIY it.

First video I ever see on this channel and so many contradictions. First he talks about “cheap Chinese” batteries and immediately praise the quality of Samsung….Samsung is made is China. Then he talks about cheap components and labor and how important is to pay for highly skilled adult worker to assemble a battery….well 99% of e-bikes components are made in China. There are awesome cheap e-bikes that works wonderful and have batteries that last 3-5 years. Just because you are paying more for a more established brand don’t mean necessarily that you are getting better components, as a matter of fact those components are probably made in the same factory. What are we supposed to do, open our battery pack and dissected to look for quality? Listen, China it’s all over, not like in the states…just cause it’s less expensive it does not mean better built…not in China.
@JohnnyNerdOut
@JohnnyNerdOut Ай бұрын
In short you have cheap cells that sell for under $2 a piece. Generally referred to generic cells (cheap). Then you have premium cells that can sell for over $7 a cell (premium cells). That is the biggest variable in price. Approximately 3x more cost for the same capacity. Cells are engineered for specific work applications. Next you have the components that join all the cells together, the BMS, the nickel and lastly the worker that solders and quality checks (hopefully) the final product. When you have seen the hundreds of variants, you quickly can recognize cheap from premium. I would not want the cheap in my house. Not worth the risk. There is a great book about “lithium batteries in a portable world” that goes painstakingly in depth about what I made broad brushstrokes on. In summary, buy from a reputable vendor that does the vetting on selling only well made batteries. Not worth the risk IMO.
@felixortiz9330
@felixortiz9330 Ай бұрын
@@JohnnyNerdOut ok that’s fair, it’s important but when a person buys a bike from any seller you don’t go ahead and open the battery to check out if the components are good quality, and to check it’s build to see if it’s safe. Also buying a more expensive bike does not guarantee a better battery since there are several battery builders in China that build the batteries for 90% of all e-bikes sold, cheap and expensive bikes.

No scale there? Even if I order the minimum of 5000 cells to get the cheapest price, it's still a complete ripoff. @@polska9052020 messed everything up for shipping, supply chain, tariffs, ect. in many industries. I was building my first PC around that time and had to deal with shortage on power supplies which made the price go up when a quality one (Seasonic) was finally available. Now getting into e-bikes for commuting/groceries and it's not a surprise certain things were cheaper years ago as well. Pre-built e-bikes are cheaper overall though so happy for that. I'll add that big automobile manufacturers spend a lot more on batteries and buy way more than these smaller ebike ones do so it's not really close. There's also new lithium battery types that came out after 2020 so of course those are gonna cost more than the batteries from 10 years ago. And I hope you're not comparing them to the cheap heavy lead acid batteries.

I've got a question for you. I bought a Polarna M5 that came with a supposedly 48V 17.5 Ah battery (that's what's written on it anyway), but I'm not convinced that it's really 17.5 Ah. Anyway, I'd like to buy a second battery (it's a foldable ebike with a battery inside the frame with a D-type metal casing). I've looked everywhere (Amazon, AliExpress, Alibaba, eBay) for such a battery 17.5 Ah but with reputable cells (Samsung or LG) and can't find any. Batteries for my ebike on Amazon go from $471 to $629 (Canadian dollars) for the same amperage, but no one states that the cells are known brands. They're all Chinese cells. Where to go to get a 48V 17.5 Ah D-type casing foldable ebike battery with high-quality cells? Thanks for any reply, and thanks for this video.

Hi AlainHubert, usually most of battery manufacturers didn't use Samsung or LG cells unless customer ask for it(They can but they usually don't). And there is a rule that sellers (on Amazon, AliExpress, Alibaba, eBay) can't use Samsung or LG as title or keywords in their published product, because it will cost very much to get the permission of Samsung or LG to use their name. That's why you can't find a seller who claim using Samsung or LG cell. I am also a ebike battery manufacturer, you are welcome to ask me some quesiton about battery.

Highest quality 18650 cells are around $2.50 wholesale ($6 retail) with cheaper quality Chinese cells around the $1.50 price range ($3 retail). Great video. Question...I'm new (self taught) to electrical engineering, repair + maintenance of ebikes. I installed a 4-light system on ebike - backlight, high beam (×1) and low beam (×2). I run everything through a 12v/24v power source (bank). Recently, I decided to add rocker switch (×2) to separate high be from low beam. I noticed that the LED indicators on the rockers will sometimes work, sometimes not but the lights will always work. I've looked for shorts, can't find anything. Power source is rated for 12v/24v. I register 28.5v on multimeter when everything is turned on. Could this be the cause why the rocker lights don't work? I've switched out rockers twice....same result. Hope u can help. Why are you cheaping out on components when there's electricity involved? If a quality mountain bike easily goes for $800-$900 why would you buy an e-bike for $400-$500? That makes no sense no matter how "broke" you are. Your house and life cost more than that. People out here buying e-bikes that cost less than a good battery smh. If you want to save money use an old bike you have or from a friend or get a used one for cheap then convert it into an e-bike. A different situation but in 2020 instead of buying a computer I studied and bought parts and built my own that was more powerful than anything I could've bought for the same price.
