Just purchased a Rad Rover, been looking at E Bikes for about a year, and with your review , & many more , I bit the bullet & purchased one. I plan to use it to go from a boondocking site into to a town for supplies, & ride the trails. I purchased the Rad Rover because it is one of the few that will accept your large battery pack, which I intend to buy, along with your upgraded controller. I realize those upgrades will void my warranty, but I'm fairly mechanically minded, & have worked on bikes over the years (I'm 72). All ways glad to see a younger person create their own world like you have. Kudos ! The Bohemian Sojourner

My Juiced ebike came with a Cycle Satiator. IMHO, It's an overly complex charger that most owners don't fully understand (including me), but the one thing I wish it would do, it won't... discharge the battery! It sounds dumb, but for me, the end of the riding season happens when the weather turns bad. At that time, I want to bring the battery down to 50% soc. You'd think just ride the battery down to 50% or lower, but usually the weather is so rotton by then, I can't (I only ride in good weather... period!). To plan a ride simply to bring the battery down involves good weather, time, and having range anxiety on the 9-mile one-way bike path. These are 3 things that are difficult to plan ahead for. I'm done whining now. :)

At 03:18 you say that a 2A charger will take 5 hours to charge a 10Ah battery pack. That's another one of those "Yes...but..." answers. That's only the minimum time to reach the maximum voltage for the charger (e.g. 42.0V for a "36V" ebike battery). However, that does not include *_Balancing_* time. It can take much longer to fully balance a given battery pack (my experience has been that the LED "turns Green" only after balancing has completed, meanwhile, the LED will sit there and stay Red, even though the battery has been already charged to the maximum voltage the charger can provide). Older battery packs may take longer to balance the cells, which is much better for the pack long-term. Also in general, the Ah capacity of a lithium ion battery pack decreases with usage, so that affects charging time as well. Other factors, like cold temperatures, can lengthen charging time by quite a bit. Definitely don't try it near freezing (0C/32F).

@jesp9994 жыл бұрын
on Aliexpress they sell much cheaper AC to DC chargers for under 20 bucks, that you can set the voltage on so you can choose to charge your battery to 80 or 90% . If for example you are charging a 48v ebike and set the charger to charge to 53.7v instead 54.6volts you have basically lowered the percentage of charge to protect your battery. Also they also sell dc to dc chargers that you can also set to use to charge your ebike from a range of DC sources or for example a 12v or 24 v solar set up. I have a solar set up in my van with 100 watts of solar and a 12v 100 amp LiFePO4 lithium battery and I use BST-900W 8-60V to 10-120V DC Converter LED Control Digital Boost Converter Voltage Transformer Module Regulator that I got on aliexpress for $15 to charge my electric scooter. So because with fun sun my lithium van "house" battery stays fully charged i basically am getting most of the charging directly from the solar in the daytime. If you get a dc to dc charger where you can regulate the amps to know it is not super high draw, you can use such a device to charger you ebike directly from your car when it is running. I have both a 36volt scooter and a 48v scooter , when set correctly it works for them, but I think a 52 volt ebike might be pushing the limits depending on the capacity coming from of your cars alternator. You want to make sure your not charging at too high a draw from the alternator, so you do not damage the alternator but for people who take their ebikes with them on a bike rack it is nice to know you can charge your bike from your car if you have the right devices and they are way cheaper than the most fancy stuff, but can do the same thing for you if you research it right. Also I would not use a cigarette style plug as it would get too hot but wire it more directly into your cars battery and add a fuse in the line to be safe. www.aliexpress.com/snapshot/0.html?spm=a2g0s.9042647.6.2.48c54c4dO4TZjF&orderId=8013333928029536&productId=4000466244260 Also one addition maybe a slight correction to the above video, on most chargers with lithium ion even when the light turns green the charger does not shut off. The charger does sense the battery is near full but ultimately it is the battery BMS that switches of the charging to the battery. The reason this is important is because you can switch chargers to the aliexpress or any charger to lithium as long as it is a constant voltage charger. So if for example your 36v ebike came with its factory 42 volts charger (maybe it was 1.5 or 2 amps) you can use any charger that puts out 42v and the right amount of amps that you battery can take. you do not have to use the factory charger. So it is OK to switch chargers if they are the right voltage. However do not ever use a lead acid bike charger on lithium or visa versa because unlike lithium the lead acid battery needed special chargers that do change the voltages at different stages in the charging process.

After _only_ 3 years? 😊 I noticed an obvious drop in performance and discovered that the voltage after a full charge was only 50.4 volts. I've had my bike 7 months. The charger is only producing 49.9 volts on my multimeter. The online place I bought the bike said it's the battery and wants to sell me one. I'm pretty sure a new battery won't solve the problem.

Before moving the input select switch (from 110 to 220, or, from 220 to 110) always assure that it is disconnected from the wall and the battery. If the designer did not put protection into the circuit to cover this senaro, it could be like shifting from D to R while still in motion.

Some battery chargers also strongly recommend disconnecting the AC mains BEFORE connecting or disconnecting the battery pack to the charger. It helps prevent damaging surges, spikes, and electrical arcing. Arcing can toss around bits of molten metal.

Use a PURE sine wave inverter. Maybe 1000watt should be good. It depends how many watts your charger needs, you'll want at least double that for the inverter. Then use your bike charger from the inverter. That's the safest way.

A great video matey! 👍 I'm like you, in that I've had many years messing with RC cars and planes, and therefore also with balancing Lithium polymer battery packs. Personally I've never had a single problem with li-poly battery packs, because I've ALWAYS balance charged every pack before use, and storage charged each battery after use. I store and charge the batteries in metal ammo tins. But I want to ask, do you really believe that the 20, or whatever, cells in an e-bike "battery" get properly and accurately balanced by the generic chargers?

Giant also charges like $300 for their "smart" charger... while everyone else sells these 36v (42v) 2-4AMP charges for $30-50... only problem is what seems like Giant's proprietary 5 pin connector... any insight where to get just the connector? then I can solder it on any generic $50 charger and keep the change... I believe everyone will want a 2nd charger at point B if they use their bike for committing from A to B but spending another $300 on the charger seems like too much of a luxury

My 48v, 500watt ebike is still going strong after 5+ years of almost-daily 5 mile rides on level ground. My charger flashes green when it gets to 80%, so most of the time I disconnect at that point. About once a month, or just before a long ride, I let it charge to 100% to balance the cells. My question: does the charger amperage have an effect on battery life? It seems like a 2 AMP charger might be easier on the battery than, say a 4 AMP charger.

Great idea for a video. My 48VDC 11.6Ah battery pack will not take a charge. My search on how to check for the culprit is lacking any helpful information. Hope you can help. None of these suggestions have been tried until I know for certain I am doing it correctly. Many suggest disconnecting the BMS (Battery Management system) from the battery pack and connect the charger that came with the bike to the leads going to the battery pack. This should somehow wake up the batteries so the BMS, once connected, can do what it was designed to do. Others state I should take out the batteries wired in parallel then charge the group with lower voltage assuming the charge voltage should be lower around 4.2VDC(not sure of the exact voltage). The idea here I assume is the battery voltage in parallel is the same voltage as one battery. This will require I purchase a power supply with current limiting? Still, others tell me I need to disassemble the battery pack and do each cell individually. If you can help please do. BTW the battery pack is from VOLTBIKE and the model intercepter.

My chargers 3A output (with a fan) for charging a 48V 13Ah battery pack. To me the charger is perfectly fine if a little slow - it still charges easily over night and I get a good 15 miles out the battery before I start to worry about draining it too low. Maybe I am paranoid but I am an electrical engineer and I understand draining fully then recharging fully ANY lithium cell no matter how fancy the “pack” is - is never a good thing. In fact the real “smart” packs automatically disconnect and won’t let you fully drain the cells and the real “smart” chargers will balance the cells out and ideally if it’s customisable, encourage you not to fully charge them all the time. As a rule of thumb you don’t want to go below 20% and you don’t want to go above 80% routinely. I don’t know if this is still the advice but I do understand lithium battery technology and although the chemistry and manufacturing has slightly improved year on year, fundamentally they are the same as always and suffer from the same degradation as always. So keep your battery at room temperature when not in use and as I said when possible use that middle 60% of charge rather than drain to zero, fill to 100% and repeat like you would a gas powered vehicle. Especially when considering that a replacement or to me briefly considered “spare” battery would cost me £399!! So far from cheap and not something you want to be replacing sooner than you need to. I am interested in the smart charger you mentioned, since I would love to set mine to charge much like a modern EV car to cut out at say 80-85% and also control the time of which it charges. Going to look in to that thank you!

that is interesting. I recently learned about a new kind of plug that mitigates that spar with an additional curcuit that has a fuse in it i believe as you plug the charger end to the battery end. and then as the plug goes deeper into the socket it goes into main charging curcuit the youtuber of Ebike School spoke about it and some other too.

Great video, question, I thought a bike battery was good for let’s say 300 charges, I thought that was 300 charges from empty, if I only run it down to say a quarter empty, does that not mean I get 1200 charges. In your analysis. If I ride 10 miles and then charge the battery, that means I will only get, 300 x 10 miles 3000 miles out of my battery? Sorry for the long post.

Than you, i couldn't find this answer anywhere else, can i just upgrade a 72v 2amp charger to a 72v 5 or 10amp charger for my Ebike without having to replace the controller etc.

Hi there. Thanks for the educational video. I have a charger from a bike I bought from a company called Lectric e bikes that I think it's faulty. I plug it into the wall and right away I see the green light. I then plugged the other end into the battery and it continues to show the green light. Why does the charger behave like that? It's supposed to show the red light as you explain in your video and green light when the battery is fully charged. I have reported it to the company among other issues. Have a brand new bike in the garage without properly using it the one it was designed.

The "Cycle Satiator" (08:35) you mentioned is ~$300...really shouldn't be that expensive. The base manufacturing cost of adding the components and firmware needed to add that functionality over and above a simple fixed-output ebike charger just isn't that much. I'd think something 20% higher retail price than that of a fixed-output charger at the upper edge of ebike voltage range (like 72V?) would be sort of "reasonable". You can buy a very flexible Lithium/NiCd/NiMH/Pb charger/discharger/storage prep/etc/etc programmable unit designed for lower voltages and wattages for less than $50, so making a unit capable of handling up to 72V and higher power in my opinion is just a scale up of an existing design and should not cost anywhere near $300.
