Criticism sort of exists in this doomed space where a lot of people who are employed by someone else as a critic review things with the intent of introducing a product to an audience that's stumbling across it on twitter, or searching for it on Google because they're not super familiar, etc. The big problems then are 1.) that the people who most reliably find these critiques are people who already have a significant emotional investment in the franchise and are looking for other people to gas up the thing they like a little bit, and 2.) the people who become professional critics often do so because digging really deeply into a game (even one that you love) to figure out what it's doing right and wrong deepens their love for the medium. They've also typically gotta do so on a time crunch, without burning their boss's connection with major publishers, and have to do so before the public narrative around a game has formed. There's also the issue of "objective critique" as you mentioned, where a lot of people seem to want reviewers to try and remove their own experience from a review of a medium whose core appeal is that you can interact and form a personal relationship with the art. I largely chalk this up to the fact that "caring about reviews" is itself a holdover from when gaming was a niche hobby - most people out there are not going to have their day changed by what Pitchfork said about an artist they found on Tiktok, but gaming outlets are still huge and have an outsized presence for a hobby as large as gaming.

it's nice to finally find a channel that is able to word and sort through the sludge of modern gaming discourse as well as you did

Thank you for an actual nuanced and respectful take on this "issue". (Also, I feel exactly the same way about the Souls games you're not alone)

Basically IGN has to review this as a video game. Not as a biased Dragon Ball fan. It still gets points for catering to those Dragon Ball fans. Its not like IGN gave it a 4 or something. But, come on, guys. You really think Sparking Zero deserves a 10? Or even a 9? A 7 is perfectly fair. As a huge Dragon Ball fan I would personally give it an 8. But 7, or even 6, is not outside the realm of being reasonable. As for Concord also getting a 7? Yeah. Also fair. And, no. The fact that it failed commercially is not "objective proof" that it was a bad game. It was a fine game in a sea of much better, free games of the same genre. Everyone just wanted IGN to validate their preconceived thoughts of the game and give it like a 3/10. If they had rated the game based on the Internet's rage instead of as its merits as a game they would be failing at their job as critics. They would just be puppets who dance for coins and parrot back what their viewers are saying in an attempt to appease them. Gamers act so smooth-brained

Gameinformer once upon a time had a cool format with second opinions from another reviewer. It'd be a smaller opinion but often times would be like someone who has a pretty contrasting opinion or just an upon ion that agrees fully. I can get the hate for the DragonBall review because for dragon ball fans it feels very like holy heck you are NITPICKING. Like you even said it yourself a 7/10 for both sparking and concord seems a little sus possibly though concord was serviceable enough just nothing remarkable so maybe constituted the 7 but to many constitutes less than a 7 cuz its not pushing any envelopes or properly servicing like ANYONE really. And counter to that to a LARGE set of people sparking zero IS remarkable and servicing A LOT of people as such a 7 grinds gears for the opposite reason. I don't think either perspective is wrong per say it's just there is a lot of levels of nuance to this AND THIS IS WHY METACRITIC AND ROTTEN TOMATOES ETC EXIST. Research the media and like get an aggregated idea of what it's about. Which requires a bit of work and critical thinking which again the internet lends itself to not being to high on at times lol. As a whole critiques have merit, but the main point of said merit comes a lot from taking in a group of critiques lol. I can see their points on sparking just feels low to most fans which by this point is such a huge portion of the globe lol. And when you compare sparking zero to the other arena fighters as they've been coming out its like night and day at times. So a few gripes on menus and tutorials when the game has a nice level of depth and content and you compare this game to like the jujutsu arena fighter or jump force or what have you your like HOW?! Lol it's like what DBZ fans want but also what general anime arena fighter fans want in a game and it's nice to see an arena fighter come out not being some cash grab. Though demon slayer and Narutos have both been pretty good so it's kinda always been a mixed bag. Just all convoluted and feeling based which means we're all gonna hate some things and like somethings lol. Much like I don't like the 2 open world Zelda games much so people or your dark souls example (which I'm also not a fan of) its like we all have things that are popular we dislike and things we like that are barely popular. Life man it gets weird out here lol
