It’s imposter syndrome and it’s normal.
We tend to go into work believing that we need to know everything and have all the answers. We’re afraid that if we don’t know everything, people will think we aren’t good enough. Then we look around at everyone else at work and worry that they may find out that we’re not perfect and we’ll get fired.
That’s the nature of imposter syndrome.
The key is that you’re not getting paid to be perfect. You’re getting paid to solve the problems you were hired to solve. If you don’t know what to do, allow yourself the time to figure it out. If you go in a direction that doesn’t work, change direction.
Any good manager should recognize that perfection is not the goal. You’re working together to solve problems.
Everyone is human. You’re going to be okay.

The thing is there are things at my work that do need to be done perfectly everytime or else something is getting really destroyed , with large repair bills and down time. I just find myself always thining about work and always feel so incompetent when doing something new specifically if its a highly skilled motor task with large consequences

Sounds like a high pressure job. Strictly speaking you are not competent when doing something new. Being incompetent is neither a good thing nor a bad thing. Don’t feel bad about yourself in these situations. You will learn faster when you trust yourself to handle new situations.

@@jasonmillercoaching4578 thank you! I really appreciate the reply and the video , and oddly enough I work on a dairy farm which isn't inherently high pressure but there are certain things that just can't be messed up. Which I'm sure is true for all Jobs

Of course. How do you think people learn how to do critical tasks? No one just walks in, hears the instructions for the first time, and nails it on the first attempt. Give yourself room to learn.

I’m in the army, I do IT and for some reason at the beginning I’m sharp and on the move and all of a sudden I start feeling dull and start calling myself an idiot out of nowhere. I start having an internal episode and shut down completely… idk if it’s because I’m on a rotation and been away from my wife and son is getting to me but I can’t stop insulting myself….

Exactly same as me. I really feel dumb. Although I used to be one of the smaryest always. But now it's like I'm the dumbest. I think it's all the internal talking and chattering that makes us feel this way.

Sounds like it. Were you able to do it? If so, then you are smart enough for the job.

@@jasonmillercoaching4578 To put it into better words, I did a mistake and was told to be better next time, an employee proceeded to tell me to be smart. I took it as him insinuating that I was stupid or dumb. However, he did not say all of that either. Of course, he was not trying to insult me, because I know his intent. Yet, I cannot help but feel like every time I walk into work everyone stares at me and wonder how I even graduated college. Of course, this is my imagination running wild because the world does not revolve around me, but I get in my head. I would love to be in a lab instead of a cubical anyways, but I am slowly working to get out of there.
