@Cristian Roth It was also kinda a propaganda move by the Entente powers to show that they treated the enemy well even in death and claiming the Central Powers did not. Though the military leader of the town he was buried in did threaten to leave if locals didn't stop trying to desecrate his grave site so I guess that counts for something
@Metalhammer19934 жыл бұрын
In WW1 it wasn't that unusual. People still had a rather feudal mentality towards war. these were men that did their duty to the country. no one you had t ohate or disrespect, different to WW2 which was just one big historical grudge match. So if your enemy was a skilled warrior of honorable character, it was the "right thing to do" to bury him like one of your own.

I get it, he was a hella of a pilot and probably not a bad guy, but fuck me, how the fuck do you defend that to all the parents who lost their sons, the widows who lost their husbands, and the children who lost their father? How do you defend to your own countrymen and the people you are charged to defend with your life, that you're putting on full ceremony and honors for the guy who killed their loved ones? What possible rationale makes up for that insult? That he was good at what he did? That you respected him? That he was a good person? That doesn't soothe the ache he left behind. The term is "Ace of Aces," it's a title given to the active pilot with the highest confirmed kills in a branch of service in times of War. Because "Active" is a qualifier for the title, it tended to move around a lot throughout the two World Wars. Von Richthofen claimed the title in the Imperial German Air Force after his mentor Oswald Boelcke was killed and held it until his own death (from groundfire, he was never shot down in aerial combat), and after the Great War ended the title was posthumously returned to him as the Imperial Ace of Aces with a final confirmed count of 80 Allied planes. Please note that this is only his "confirmed" kills, because von Richthofen operated in a squadron that was stocked with Aces by the time the war ended (edit: among them, his brother Lothar with 40 confirmed kills. Of the two brothers, Lothar was the stereotypical fighter jock that took risky chances. Manfred was more by the book and wasn't a fan of high risk maneuvers, he thought they were stupid and pointless) and a kill was only "confirmed" if it was witnessed by at least two others, be it ground troops or fellow pilots (hence the red plane, easier to say, "yep, the red one got the kill" when watching from the ground). It's been theorized that his actual kill count was almost double. His counterpart, the Allied Ace of Aces, was named Rene Fonck, with 75 confirmed kills. Fonck survived the war, but was a commoner who did his best to avoid the limelight, and who really remembers second place? Also, the use of the organ at the beginning was a nod to Jagdgeschwader I, the Air Wing the Red Baron commanded made up of his four hand picked Jasta squadrons. Their planes were very colorfully decorated to make the aforementioned ground identification easier and they traveled all over the war on both fronts, which earned them the nickname "Flying Circus." The organ opening was meant to sound like a foreboding circus introduction.
