When I was 8 years old I got braces to wear overnight so it wouldn't limit my daily life. I've been told that it prevents misgrowing and it looks better when finished. For people in Germany it's quite common to wear braces in your child/teenage life. To be honest, a few years ago I would've considered yaeba teeth as bad, but since I got to know more about Japan and its culture I started to get a sense for it and I wouldn't mind at all. Cheers!

You do know that some people are born with straight teeth don't you and maintain straight teeth irrespective of their dental care? The shape of your teeth have nothing to do with wearing braces or how often you visit the dentist.
@lupuscorvidae7 жыл бұрын
I am a dentist in the USA. I also lived in Japan for 3 years. I was highly aware of the differences in the two cultures as related to dental awareness. The genetics between Asian and Western teeth aren't really all that different. (In other words, most people aren't born with perfectly straight teeth no matter what their heritage.) But there are huge cultural differences. The US has the highest standard of dental care in the world. People in the US are very harshly judged if they have dental problems. People will judge that you are poor or uneducated if they see you have poor teeth. People here confuse straight teeth with healthy teeth. Straightening your teeth doesn't mean they are healthy, and teeth that aren't straight aren't by definition unhealthy. It's a matter of function at some level, but mostly it's a matter of esthetics. Straight teeth look better to the US eye. And even that's not enough. People have unrealistic expectations when it comes to how white they want their teeth. There is now a huge business in the US to bleach people's teeth to unnatural levels of white.
@lupuscorvidae7 жыл бұрын
Interesting...I've never heard that idea. I'm not sure if I agree, but it is a unique view. The problem with it is that most people in the US also have crooked teeth until they get orthodontics. Otherwise, we'd all equally have crooked teeth.

Yeah Hiroko is right. In the UK it is near mandatory (and is the norm) that you have braces in order to have perfect teeth. When you are in secondary school (high school equivalent for other countries), you will see people wearing them for at least 1-3 years depending on how bad their teeth are and it is very unusual to see people not have braces, unless their teeth are naturally perfect. The reason why so many people can have perfect teeth is because the NHS offer braces for free if your teeth dont pass a certain test which dictates if they are 'good' or not. Hope this helps any foreigners reading this.

I think the more important aspect of getting your teeth fixed is being overlooked; more important than looks. Crowded teeth/crooked teeth are harder to care for. It's really hard to evenly brush or floss severely crowded teeth. It's not uncommon to get cavities at the areas which teeth are pushing against each other, or under pressure from surrounding teeth. So even if you don't care about how they look, your mentality might change when you start losing teeth earlier in life than you expected. It just sucks that it's so expensive.
@tirorinn127 жыл бұрын
Exactly. I could have gotten braces as a kid, I didn't care about how my teeth looked. However 10+ years later now they've crowded more and are harder to care for I wish someone had told me the health reasons rather than the cosmetic. Now I'm having to save up thousands to get them fixed. :(

I've often wondered why Japanese people more than others (though British ppl seem to have it often too) seem to have crooked teeth. Now it's pretty clear it's simply the high dental fee's required for braces. When everyone around you has a similar look, it doesn't bother but what if prices become affordable and most people start getting braces? Pretty sure their view on crooked teeth will change too.

It's a very "finely tuned" instrument that are made to fit you in specific and on top of that, it's measured in precise "pull" measurements on your teeth so that it doesn't "overdo" it. This requires a lot of "engineering" you could say from professionals. On top of this, you need to go there to have the procedure to put them in, this also takes up time of a professional. In terms of dental *work*, I think it's just high demand and not many people go into it as a job. I have a friend who studied it for 5 years I think and then when she graduated she had no intention of actually working in it. She said she made a huge mistake and it's way complicated and detailed that most people think. I guess you need to have surgical precision for some of the things they do but yeah.. High complexity and low supply of manpower is the most logical reason to me but then what do i know..

I feel this obsession with perfectly straight, perfectly white teeth is more of a typical AMERICAN phenomenon than anything. It's not really that common all over the world. I'm not from Japan, my teeth aren't perfect, but I don't worry that much about it and it hasn't had any real impact in my social interactions with others either. I think Japan should stick to the yaeba-ideal rather than conforming to the american ideals of perfect straight, perfect white because it really doesn't mean anything to oral hygiene. Teeth with a slightly yellow tint does NOT mean that they're "dirty" or diseased in anyway. It just means that they have been discoloured to to certain types of food and drink (smoking can also influence it) bit it's not "dirt", it's just a chemical reaction to the enamel of the teeth. Assuming that teeth are "dirty" because of this is like saying that a sun-bleached hair or sun-tanned skin is "dirty" which is of course ridiculous. The only reason why the perfectly straight, perfectly white has become so idealized in the U.S is in order to keep oral cosmetic dentists in business. It has no basis in health or hygiene whatsoever.
@ankita73425 жыл бұрын
Uhh, I don't think so. White teeth are pretty much idealised everywhere. Ofc it's deemed hygienic since it's much easier to take care of straight teeth. I live in India and the dentists here live really hard lives. My dentist even told me to never pursue dentistry lol. But who doesn't love a set of clean teeth?? It's just that ppl here aren't that self-conscious and don't care, and then again, it costs a lot. I don't think it's a phenomenon that began in the US.
@aakashm15 жыл бұрын
Let me educate you on dental hygiene before you continue to spread falsities to other people. I'm a dental student and I can tell you that yellow teeth isn't exclusively due to a diet high in tannins (tea/coke/coffee). That type of staining from tannins is called extrinsic staining and appear as brown spots on the tooth surface, not generalised yellowing. These extrinsic stains can be easily removed via a scale and polish or microabrasion. You are correct that smoking can cause yellowing of the teeth. The yellowing that the vast majority of people will have is due to the enamel layer of the teeth (which has a white colour) being dissolved by plaque bacteria, revealing the yellow colour of the dentine underneath. Therefore, yellow teeth are a result of poor oral hygiene due to an inability to brush plaque away effectively and consistently.

Crooked teeth are the result of eating *soft* food as a child, e.g., rice and sushi. It is more prevalent in industrialized societies that eat "modern" diets consisting of cooked/processed foods. Without enough pressure from chewing tougher foods, the two halves of the maxilla (i.e., the roof of the mouth) do not expand sideways. It leaves less room for the larger upper teeth as they emerge. It also does not allow the lower teeth to line up against the upper teeth properly nor allow the mandible (i.e., lower jaw) to come forward. That's how you get crooked teeth with a small/receded chin. It is because of the childhood diet.
@selfish35204 жыл бұрын
My teeth are perfect with no use of braces, my chin is also perfect and forward, I don't breathe with my mouth or ever did. As a child I ate rice and beans everyday, not many tough things to chew.... genetics come into play much more.
@michelle-yt7qr4 жыл бұрын
Um no, genetics and environmental factors play a role. Mouth breathing like the other commenter said they didn’t do, does damage to your jaw and alignment. Early tooth loss also plays a major role in teeth crowding and misalignment. Using a pacifier and bottles past a certain age does damage as well.

I personally also think yaeba is really cute. Some Hollywood Idols have it and it gives a certain unique vibe to them. I've lived several years in Brazil and now I live in Gernany. And for what I've experienced, children get their teeth done very early in both countries. Although in Brazil the procedure really is expensive, even people with less money pay for it. Sometimes even adults still have braces as they can first afford it when they work themselves. I think this says a lot about the country's standard. As for in Germany, I experienced a rare situation, when a myself got my teeth done. The doctor told me that I should maybe think twice as the "flaw" was minimal and not necessarily a flaw. "It just made me unique in my own way." Looking back I think this should be something every doctor should say to a patient wanting to undergo a beauty procedure. Especially childreen should be told that a lot more often.

Here in the U.K most kids get braces (and retainers after your braces are taken off) for free under the NHS if your teeth aren't straight. i am japanese american and i always wondered this as well so thank you for doing this video. i could never bring myself to ask my japanese cousins who were born and raised in japan why japanese have such bad teeth, not only just crooked, but very discolored as well. i always thought americans drank coffee so should have more staining than japanese who drink tea, yet americans seem to not have as much discoloration. and i know japan has whitening toothpaste. i also wanna know why teeth are of little aesthetic importance in japan seeing as how everything else superficially is, such as having white skin, double eyelids, fashion, makeup, etc. why is teeth not included in the aesthetic beauty category in japan? is it because they hide their teeth when they laugh, so they don't see the need to make them nice, because they don't have to show them? are teeth seen as just a chewing tool there? do japanese get biannual teeth cleanings/checkups and are they covered by insurance? also, why did that girl have braces for 6 years? is it because orthodontia isn't perfected there? that's a really long time to have braces. my braces took two years and i had really bad teeth... yaeba, multiple exractions, headgear, rubber bands for the underbite, etc. this was because i have the smallest mouth and hugest teeth on the planet. if orthdontia isn't perfected there, i wonder why, because japan is really cutting edge in most other fields, especially medicine. but then again, japan is full of contradictions because cash is still preferred over credit cards and many hotels use physical door keys instead of cards keys. i guess japan picks and chooses what they want to be advanced in? also, i don't think cost is an issue because japanese have no problem staying at $500/night hotels in hawaii and scooping up LV and Hermes bags.

Straight teeth is a pretty big deal where I live in the West. I live in the US. I grew up as a thumb sucker and it gave me a bad overbite so my teeth formed into a triangle where my overbite is. It made me uncomfortable to smile showing my teeth and it gave me a huge lisp. Right now, I'm currently 19 with braces, and I ended up having them put on when I was 16. My teeth are pretty much straight right now, but I still have the top of my jaw pushed out a little over the bottom row of my teeth. People ask me how long have I had them on and when I say 3 years, they freak out and act so shocked. Imagine how they would react to the girl that said 6 years in the vid haha. In order for my jaw to be completely fixed, I'll need to go through an expensive surgery but in my eyes, my teeth problem is not really THAT deep for me to have to do all that. Yes, it's so my teeth can end up as precisely straight as possible. And everyone around me is nagging me to do it. But I currently have a super decent smile, and that's ALL I need. I'm satisfied now. But my whole point of this rant is to show you guys, how serious people take straight teeth here. If people in other countries can live with crooked teeth, then so can I with my current decent set of teeth.

i'am an indian ... and i personally like that 'yaeba' concept.. my sister was cute when she had perfect teeth at the time when she was very small...but as her teeth started to fall off, one of her canines grew abnormally.. and now she is cuter than before.. P.S - love japan and anime..

_The Japanese 🇯🇵🇯🇵🇯🇵 must have not yet learned how to _*_MEW._*_ Mewing helps straighten teeth and enhance overall facial profile naturally._ What is *MEWING* (orthotropics)? In short, to mew is to place tongue in palate (roof of the mouth), close lips together and breathe through nose.
@KZ-hu9uj5 жыл бұрын
Wait... That's a healthy thing to do? My whole life I have felt like a weirdo for my tongue naturally resting on my palate, and thought that I was doing something wrong! This comment just changed everything wow. I'm glad I just naturally do this haha

It' seen as something disgusting if you have crooked teeth either in my homecountry Russia or here in my second home Germany. Personally, I think, yaeba is cute but very bad teeth aren't good... also for your health not only for beauty standards

Straightening your teeth doesn't mean they are healthy... You can have healthy crooked teeth as long as you clean them right
@tejasbele14565 жыл бұрын
Well in India your teeth should be white. If your teeth are slightly yellow then most of the people started to ignoring you. And if you are going through dental treatment like you have braces your teeth then teenagers make fun of your teeth

In spain there are two kinds of childs: - The poor family guy that can't have his teeth repaired because here it costs an insane amount of money to go to the dentist. - The rich family guy that since he was born went to the dentist and brags a lot about how nice are his fathers for putting on him such a nice smile.

What about the people born with perfect natural straight teeth? Somehow that was my case even though my sister had crooked teeth.
@TheMaru6666 жыл бұрын
Ortodontics are expensive , and some of theese kids , straighten theirs after they start working when older . But most parents try to afford it if it is really necesary , and not only for stetics .

Getting braces was the norm here. I remember kids getting them throughout elementary school to highschool (and after that too). I had extremely crooked teeth (at least in Canada), including the yaeba fangs. I remember being made fun of because of my teeth, and being so insecure about them. I got braces in highschool, and now have perfect teeth though. It's straight cause my former teeth basically look like most of the interviewees teeth in this video, and I wonder if I wouldn't have been as insecure about them if i were in japan ..

I think straight teeth and clean healthy teeth are super important. Blame it on Hollywood or even all the KZbinrs with perfect teeth, but anytime someone with bad teeth shows up on video it really stands out and not usually in a good way. Pretty much every one I know here in California has near perfect teeth, it's just considered normal. Personally I had braces as a kid and veneers as an adult, totally worth the money and discomfort to be confident when talking and smiling.

For anyone wanting to do orthodontic treatment its best to wait till wisdom teeth grow. I had my treatment done before wisdom teeth grew and now my treatment has lapsed as wisdom teeth came out at an angle costing me surgeries and two root canals.
@animetwilight757 жыл бұрын
My wisdom teeth are growing in sideways and it's pushing and damaging my back teeth in front of them. I also have braces on but they're telling me that I need to get my wisdom teeth out. I'm nervous because I'm not sure what to expect and I really dislike the idea of all of this

animetwilight75 you won't be able to eat solids for about 3 weeks. And your face will be swollen for a long time. There will be a black mark for a long time. That's why you shouldn't get all 4 taken out at once. Cause that will hurt like hell. Only get the ones out your dentist tells you to, and max. 2 at a time. But it's worth it in the end. Because there won't be any problems anymore.
@Aurorya6 жыл бұрын
Flower Dolphin I had the 4 taken out all at once and it didn't hurt that much thanks to the anesthesia... and even the weeks after it was ok (why didn't you take medicine if it hurts so much? ). I agree on the rest, I had "hamster cheeks" for 2 weeks after the surgery x)

I am a new subscriber and love Japanese culture! I am Latina living in the U.S. My teeth were crooked when I was in elementary school but when I went to middle school, I noticed many of my white classmates had braces or straight teeth! I felt inferior somehow with my crooked teeth so I convinced my parents to get me braces. During my college years, I lost my retainers and my teeth gradually became a bit crooked again. This time I got Invisalign's and now have to wear a retainer every night for the rest of my life. I think it is worth it though because I feel more confident with my teeth and my smile. I feel like in this country, people are judged a lot by their looks and clothing. It is a bit superficial but those with money take better care of their looks because they have the money to do so. In short, looks can show your socioeconomic class level. Now my daughter wants Invisalign's and my son will need braces when he is older. I am okay with buying these for them in the future but I have to save my money for it.

I used to have protruding fangs like yaeba but I got braces and extracted the 4 teeth next to my canine/fang teeth to make space for them to move into. I like the look of yaeba, especially when smiling but this is more practical to have straight teeth and I'm very excited seeing them get more uniform and straight month by month. I still have very long sharp fangs that protrude like a 1 or 2 mm below my teeth line (idk what to call it) and I'm liking this look. It still adds that little accent to my smile. My younger sister still has her yaeba (maybe genetic?) and it reminds me of what I lost but she's planning on getting braces too.

in germany we have health care laws and you get supported to let make your teeths and if you don't have work or too less money it can be that you have to pay nothing because the State is doing then. Thats propably why we have for ussually good teeths

In spain , although general healthcare is excellent , dental care is not covered by public healthcare , only extractions . Kids might have teeth done for cavitis , but not straightened if they are crooked . If you want to brace them , you should pay .
