In the engineers defense (or not), my guess is that Chrysler, like so many other carmakers, have a standard procedure of sucking out the oil from top, and the drain is just still there because there is a legal obligation. If though, Chryslers oil change manual for Chrysler workshops does not state to suck out the oil, then it's really dumb.

@@kallekas8551 No! Often doing it the simple way would have cost less. Normal people: KISS (Keep it simple, stupid. Engineer: It needs more features. Example: Connector on speedometer wires under Plymouth Voyager. Bottom of connector had TWO rubber seals to seal the plug. But upstream, there was no sealing. So water ran freely down the two wires (Gravity? What's gravity?) into the plug where the engineer thoughtfully double sealed the water inside, shorting it out. Drive on wet streets, lose speedometer. 💡

As an engineer who's been a mechanic for years I can say you're absolutely wrong. If you know anything about the complexity of a car factory and all the processes involved you would know it isn't simple at all. That engine isn't in this car alone. It's cost a lot of money to change the oil pan. The pan it self isn't the big cost, the planning, the stock etc etc that's the problem. Especially for this minor inconvenience.

Not really. Engineers will make good products they just get screwed by management. Moving that bolt a half an inch means a change to the assembly line and a different part instead of shared components. This happens all the time and engineers at a large company don't actually get to make those decisions, accounting does
@Epilon5 ай бұрын
@@caseymurray7722exactly. The majority of bad designs can be more blamed on the bean counters than the engineers themselves. There is a hidden beurocracy that affects almost every design decision in large companies. Oftentimes engineers have to fight management for better products, but most people get burnt out trying to do shit that they dont get paid for. Management also tends to lay off the experienced staff (especially those who are vocal) and hire new people (oftentimes from offshore) with little to no clue what they are doing.

It actually turns out to be a good design because no matter how fast that oil is flowing. It always comes down into the bucket at the same spot. Where is the normal way? As the flow rate slows? It can easily go 300 mm difference and all over the floor if you're not careful
@shanerorko807614 күн бұрын
It's because the drivetrain is manufactured in a totally different place to the chassis, and then the model engineers have to use what they are given. They might've asked if they can get a oil pan revision, but were likely denied due to cost. Many cars do this now on various different components of suspension, the workshop fix is to use flexi funnels to direct the oil.
