In primitive churches of the Anglo isles and Northern Europe many christian men cut their beards short or were completely shaven. This was in rejection of the pride that many of the barbarism races in which men had great pride in their beards and hair. We see that come to fruition in the Viking age where men could spend hours each day helping each other dye their hair and braid their beards. Men with short beards were made fun of. It’s beautiful how the small t traditions of our faith can differ but fundamentally come from the same principles.

why do english people speak of barbers (barbarians)? If all orthodox men decided to grow all their facial hair without triming the edges or manicuring it they would not have the appealing look the west likes today. Many men would have scragly knarled face hair with crazy hairlines and bald spots. If the west saw the mangy, bald spots many men have in their beards they would think we are crazy since we didnt care about our outward appearance. Then we would truly Christian. I guess my point is that even the manliest men still take steps to affect how their body feels and is presented to the outside world, and I don't see it as a feminine practice. It is a human practice. Clean shaven looks a bit goofy to me, but I don't associate it with femininity. My understanding is long hair and beards were a hindrance in warrior cultures when men did a lot of hand to hand combat. Short hair and beards couldn't be grabbed, giving the attackers a better chance to clonk you over the head with an axe. Long hair and beards in men are akin to the long fingernails Chinese elites and scholars grew - it shows you don't do manual labor as the very long beards and hair could get caught in machinery or get full of muck and other disgusting stuff.

Roman legions recognized that long hair and long beards was a detriment in close quarter combat as your enemy can grab hold of your head and dominate you. Long hair and beards is also a hygene problem as a soldier, so Hebrews kept their hair and beards relatively short as did the Romans and most militaries since. Shaving became easier in the latter centuries with the advent of razors. In the epistles Paul says it is self evident that long hair is a blessing to women and a shame for men but there is no prohibition for gentiles. There is no Nazerite vow as in Sampson's day in Christianity. Long hair is rather vain with young metrosexuals and just lazyness with dirty hippy types. As a former Soldier and Sailor i prefer short hair and a short beard or clean shaven. Its easier and requires less effort to maintain and if you are attacked there is nothing for your enemy to grab hold of on your head.
