In primitive churches of the Anglo isles and Northern Europe many christian men cut their beards short or were completely shaven. This was in rejection of the pride that many of the barbarism races in which men had great pride in their beards and hair. We see that come to fruition in the Viking age where men could spend hours each day helping each other dye their hair and braid their beards. Men with short beards were made fun of. It’s beautiful how the small t traditions of our faith can differ but fundamentally come from the same principles.

Amen! Honestly, as an Anglican I don’t think it’s a bad thing to shave but if you don’t want to shave and grow out all your hair that’s ok too. Long hair and beards are nice but they do take more to brush and wash.

why do english people speak of barbers (barbarians)? If all orthodox men decided to grow all their facial hair without triming the edges or manicuring it they would not have the appealing look the west likes today. Many men would have scragly knarled face hair with crazy hairlines and bald spots. If the west saw the mangy, bald spots many men have in their beards they would think we are crazy since we didnt care about our outward appearance. Then we would truly Christian. I knew a scizo dude that was more Orthodox than all of us.

@@keagaming9837I only shave and cut my hair every 2-3 months and it works great. It doesn't get so long or crazy that it takes extra time to wash and clean and then I'm also not wasting minutes shaving every day. I think it saves way more time to only shave occasionally. Its not like it takes special shampoo or super extra scrubbing techniques to deal with a shortish beard.

@@ouebIt's fine to be somewhat vain. Everyone is to some degree. You have to live in your body all day every day for your entire life. @@somethingelse4424 if men werent biki waxing, then you may have a point. i find putting shaving on the same level as washing the dirt and sweat off is interesting, is that your perspective of men? they need to wash the hair of their face to be acceptable? to be vain is not a positive trait.
@somethingelse4424
@somethingelse4424 5 ай бұрын
@@oueb I don't go clean shaven, I just trim it down to maybe 2-3mm or something. That feels clean and comfortable, and I think it looks best on my face without risking ingrown hairs and looking like an actual baby. Whatever level of maintenance makes you feel comfortable in your own skin is what is right for you. I guess my point is that even the manliest men still take steps to affect how their body feels and is presented to the outside world, and I don't see it as a feminine practice. It is a human practice. Clean shaven looks a bit goofy to me, but I don't associate it with femininity. The male bikini waxing makes me slightly uncomfortable, but I think I would apply the same principles I described with facial hair.

My understanding is long hair and beards were a hindrance in warrior cultures when men did a lot of hand to hand combat. Short hair and beards couldn't be grabbed, giving the attackers a better chance to clonk you over the head with an axe. Long hair and beards in men are akin to the long fingernails Chinese elites and scholars grew - it shows you don't do manual labor as the very long beards and hair could get caught in machinery or get full of muck and other disgusting stuff.

I can naturally relate to this, I hate having to care what my hair looks like. I like it better when I can just brush my hair and not be conserned with how my hair looks and then mess with it throughout the day. It's a sentiment that I was not taught as a kid, If my mom didn't give me haircuts, my hair would've been extremely long. I've always kept that sentiment, I'm trying to grow it out long to see if I would like it, but I"m not liking it so far and learning that I like my hair medium length. I feel like it's a fantastic sentiment to have little to no concern over your looks (brushing our hair is needed though), it eliminates insecurities that we shouldn't have.

Genuine question. If it doesn’t matter about what you look like, what do you want to look a certain way i.e. wearing robes and certain types of hats. Personally, I’m a 50 year old heavy-metal kid and when I look at orthodoxy, I think it looks super rad. The fact that you have like a uniform, and with embroidery and stuff. It reminds me of like heavy-metal Jean jacket with patches on it, so this question is coming from a good place. And for me, long hair is almost like part of a certain look that I think looks cool. So should I cut my hair? Haha

Here are pieces of scripture that comment on long hair and beards, I would love to hear if anyone else has more to share for or against as I want to grow in knowledge with all my brothers and sisters 🙏 Leviticus 19:27 You shall not round off the hair on your temples or mar the edges of your beard. 1 Corinthians 11:14 Does not nature itself teach you that if a man wears long hair it is a disgrace for him, Ezekiel 44:20 They shall not shave their heads or let their locks grow long; they shall surely trim the hair of their heads. Leviticus 21:5 They shall not make bald patches on their heads, nor shave off the edges of their beards, nor make any cuts on their body.

Roman legions recognized that long hair and long beards was a detriment in close quarter combat as your enemy can grab hold of your head and dominate you. Long hair and beards is also a hygene problem as a soldier, so Hebrews kept their hair and beards relatively short as did the Romans and most militaries since. Shaving became easier in the latter centuries with the advent of razors. In the epistles Paul says it is self evident that long hair is a blessing to women and a shame for men but there is no prohibition for gentiles. There is no Nazerite vow as in Sampson's day in Christianity. Long hair is rather vain with young metrosexuals and just lazyness with dirty hippy types. As a former Soldier and Sailor i prefer short hair and a short beard or clean shaven. Its easier and requires less effort to maintain and if you are attacked there is nothing for your enemy to grab hold of on your head.

These things are funny, because except if there's harm involved for any of the parts (be it human, animal or nature for example), why should anyone be concerned about any personal preferences, such as beards and clothes? Even if someone thinks every men should not shave their beards, it doesn't stop anyone from doing so. So it doesn't really matter what others think.

Funny thing is dudes take way longer trimming and primping their beards than the 5 min it takes to shave your face

Shaving and cutting your hair short has nothing to do with looks or primping, it has to do with being comfortable. Having a long beard and long hair is objectively uncomfortable and is a nuisance to take care of. Speaking from experience. It’s easier to stay clean when everything is trimmed. That is the actual reason for shaving and cutting your hair short.

“Shaving and cutting your hair short has nothing to do with looks or primping” yes! mostly likely and most people are vain about it. “Having a long beard and long hair is objectively uncomfortable etc…” that’s subjective some people are unbothered by long hair and some in fact like having long hair and maintaining it. “It’s easier to stay clean when everything is trimmed” I agree but everyone is not the same. Some like long hair and maintaining it and others don’t

Didn't Jesus say for women to have long hair and men to have short? I don't think anything was said about beards. I think that was the reason people started cutting their hair
