Take Me Back to Eden was an intense listening experience. This is one of those albums that you have to listen to from start to finish instead of picking out tracks. It perfectly encapsulates everything I listen to in one perfectly arranged and performed collection. I am a big listener of blues, jazz, soul and classical (B.B. King, Frank Sinatra, Adele, Post Malone, Beethoven) but I am predominantly a metal head that listens to pummeling metal/metalcore to the tune of Periphery, Oceano, Suicide Silence, Signs of the Swarm. Deftones still reign supreme on my playlists though. Sleep Token is without a doubt my AOTY, and quite possibly in the top 10 I have ever heard.

You definitely don't have to lots of weird time signatures. In fact I would dare to say that making music with weird time signatures just for the sake of it often results in crap garbage that is almost unlistenable. Weird time signatures should only be used if they really fit the song and make sense musically. Making music complicated just because makes terrible music that only other weird musicians like to listen to.

Would have thought that a swing groove would be something like a 4/4 time signature. Prog metal is the genre that was popularised by Dream Theatre and other bands starting in the mid-eighties, and Sleep Token fits into all of that reasonably well today.

It feels like you’re struggling to come up with the term “dotted (quarter) notes,” but that’s what you’re hearing and describing. In this prog/djent genre, it’s almost always an underlying 4/4 with polymeters and/or polyrhythms over it. Once you DO find the 4/4 groove, that’s what makes the impact of these dotted notes and sub-divisions so darn rewarding. 🤘🏼🤩

So this might be a hot take, but I think the song is actually 4/4 all the way through, but heavily syncopated for several measures in a row that it doesn’t feel like a standard time signature. This is my many years of music in school that lead me to this possible conclusion. I admit, I’m not 100% sure about this, but people who aren’t trained in odd time signatures regularly tend not to write in them without having extensive experimentation doing so.
@667neighbourofthebeast
@667neighbourofthebeast Жыл бұрын
I'm unsure why standard time signatures, such as 2/4, 3/4, 4/4 and 6/8, are considered rudimentary and basic. There can be difficulty performing in any of them. Variations, changes in tempo and key changes do make a composition interesting even if it only makes sense to the composer. The type of music I perform has evolved from simple three part variations of a theme, into an unnecessary complexity of overused syncopation, staccato, pp to ff crescendo in short measures et cetera. I honestly have doubts if the audience appreciates the articulation and direction of the orchestrations, or are just dumbfounded and bewildered by an experience which isn't supposed to be challenging to listen to and analyze. Sometimes one just needs to go back to the roots, to the inspiration, and cut out all the superfluous racket for awhile.

@@667neighbourofthebeast definitely appreciate the idea to not be worried about crazy time signatures. I love standard time signatures. 6/8 is probably my favorite of all time because it has so many intricacies. Super versatile time signature for sure.

Other than the cool midi/quantized blast drums and over-processed modern metal guitars, I really don’t get all the praise. It’s a combination of 80s pop with computer/DAW-generated metal. It’s not for metal fans. The vocalist is getting a lot of praise from snobs but the voice just doesn’t suit metal. Kinda like Polyphia being good technically but not for metal fans. Not something I would listen to after the novelty wears off after two songs.

Absolutely brilliant "band" (actually, singer Vessel writes and performs everything on the albums, except for the astonishing drums, played by "II")... They were phenomenal right out of the gate on their debut "One" E.P., (a true masterpiece from start to finish, IMO), and, from there, even before they'd released their first full album, they'd created some of the most innovative, breathtaking musical offerings in the form of songs like 'Calcutta', Jaws', and Vessel's fantastic remake of the classic OutKast' hit, 'Hey Ya'... It's been a magnificent journey of continuous pleasant surprise, witnessing their evolution and ascent to widespread acclaim... I can't imagine a singer/songwriter and drummer in their league at this point in time... As always, can't wait to see/hear/feel what they do next... \m/

The machine looks like a giant warhammer droid. They ARE definitely inspired by Tool. I've been a huge Tool fan since Lateralus and II is a beast of a drummer! Being a drummer myself I noticed II has done some drum 🥁 patterns (can't recall which track) that is very similar to what Danny Carey played on "Eulogy". One KZbin comment said they transcend genre, the more I hear the more I agree with that. Their track "Aqua Regia" has what can only be described as dinner jazz piano in the mix too. I recently saw them play at the Apollo and became one with the synth bass. It was that freaking loud and reverberating through my whole body AND I was standing near the back wearing proguard ear plugs. But the summoning practically went viral. At least compared to any previous track by them. Math metal is def another way of describing them but those elements are a bit more Meshuggah in my view. Suffice to say it's sublime music Justin but Igorr is another band that transcend genre. I also first saw them at Download same year I first saw Sleep Token there in 2018 I think. Clown 🤡 core also defy genre.

Sounds like a British officer from one of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies decided to start a band and sing about how much he loves/hates Jack Sparrow.....the HEAVY accent honestly ruins the songs for me. Ozzy has such a thick accent you can't understand a word he speaks irl, but when he sings you can understand every single word.....that ability is important because unfortunately for you that Cockney style accent reminds lots of us of every British stereotype character in every movie we have ever seen and it sounds ridiculous. ELLO GUVNAH!!! DO YOU WANT A SPOT O TEA? YOU AUGHT NOT DO THAT ME LORD!!! etc etc....this band is just awful.

As a non musician who doesn't know how to play anything, I just like the sound. I'm not counting anything or working anything out. Just enjoying it.

Hello Justin! I think you should talk about the great song "Lord Intended" by the great De La Soul that you did such a great job singing on from their album "and the Anonymous Nobody".

I’ve heard one other ST song, but didn’t like it very much. This one I actually liked a lot more. I realize they’re one of the popular up n coming bands of today, but idk, it’s kind of all over the place, yet sounds very poppy to me. Don’t get me wrong though, they sound like a great band, I just don’t think it’s my style atm. 🤷🏻‍♂️

For me sleep token's nothin special really. Heard some of their songs years before, they suddenly kinda made changes when the "thall" and "djent" sound exploded. I went through that rabbit whole and I could say is there are so many bands that they kinda copied. Personally the whole thing is just hype and gimmick really.

Sleep Token is objectively good at what they do, but I find myself lf skipping through the slow stuff to find those nice chunky breakdowns. A lot of it feels really self indulgent. Curiously mentioning Tool at the top of video is apt, because they do similar things in their music. But I from what I understand Tool isn't cool, while Sleep Token is? They're just not for me.

Why do people listen to Sleep Token..? Hmmm, probably because they're more than just one song, they are a band that defies the single focused culture in music in a way that still results in incredible success and continued support. This isn't one song or one album that got them to where they are (not a shot, don't take it that way). They're 3 albums deep with 800k to 1 million+ plays on every single track. This album has done significantly more press and the numbers are climbing, but it's not an anomaly in their discography either. This is a band that has created a mystique that defies the continual outward seeking of fame in an attempt to create a dynamic and eclectic spanse of collected releases across both the visual and auditory spectrums. The fact is, they're not just exposing non-metal fans to metal songs.. they're also exposing metal fans to non-metal genres. It's referred to as 'worship' by their fans by the ease at which the band transcends genre stereotypes and fan expectations, often times within the same song. Sleep Token is a band that people can go to when they might not know of one exact type of music to describe their present state of being, and chances are pretty high that they'll find something there to connect with.

It could be asked the same of you? Why do people even like you? It's taste in music. the Darkness in a lot of people's opinion is rubbish and yet in a lot of people's eyes it's amazing. You ask questions like how long is a piece of string when really it is all just down to taste and opinion. I think Sleep token are really good. Don't like all their songs, but in general think they've done really well with the composition, writing, and blending of genres.

Enough of this bs… people putting their faces out into the ether. Don’t put your face around my door. The Darkness is a comedy band. A parody à cabaret… couple of catchy tunes 20 years ago when rat arsed etc…

When I think of math rock, I think of toe. This does not sound like toe xD That rhythm at the start is just dotted eighth notes, AKA a 3:4 crossrhythm. snare is still just wacking the big backbeats

It's okay. They are trying to appeal to too many listeners, which in my book spreads the musical message thin and makes them seem wanting for attention, but hats off to them for the musicianship and artistry. Somebody in the band likes warhammer.

I always felt counting time signatures is a monumental waste of time. I know music can be broken down into scientific formulas just like everything else. But I just want to rock.....so . F a bunch of counting shit.

Justin, please get well deserved rest now after an incredible tour! I don't think you covered any of HIM or Ville Valo music before, would be really interesting to hear your opinion on his newest solo stuff, as in my opinion he is one of the most iconic voices and musicians in Europe. All the best to you, hope to see you and the Darkness live still this year!

There are some extra bars here and there but it's actually all 4/4. Try to listen tho the rythm guitar only. Its the triplets and some unusual snare placements throwing you off. BTW: I think you are one of the most underrated singers of all time.
