Talking about gay eroticisation of nazi uniforms, I wonder how much Touko "Tom of Finland" Laaksonen's homoerotic art of men in them played into their pop culture relevance. He was a soldier in the Finnish army during WW2 and thought the Nazi officer uniforms were the hottest, even though he also said he despised the ideology. I am thinking only about the picture itself. The whole Nazi philosophy, the racism and all that, is hateful to me, but of course I drew them anyway-they had the sexiest uniforms!" @@Kriegter That's a bad take though. The average German officer would not have been a fat guy, that is just the elite. Just look at the way Nazi rallies and propaganda was instigated. They build entire buildings or even cities with a certain classical style. It was not just a bunch of uniforms it was a holistic approach to the style that made it stand out. Nazis copied/adapted it from the Roman Empire (which is where the Third Reich is coming from, it was the third iteration of the Holy Roman Empire (of the German Nation)). The Nazi greeting is literally a variant of Ave Caesar. Many nations copied (parts) of it later on for their propaganda. The fact that their uniforms were designed at all made them stand out. The Brits were just wearing brown potato sacks at the time (very utilitarian). Just google "1930s Nazi Germany Nuremberg Rally in color" and tell me that that is not an impressive show of force (not in a military sense). Image search "Berlin Hitler’s 50th birthday midnight" or look at the cover of In the Garden of Beasts by Erik Larson (the picture of the illuminated Brandenburg Gate). It all just oozes a certain style. Horrible ideology, the worst, but you can't mock their CI. It's top notch.

I fucking hated every second in costume. So uncomfortable. 2. The media representation factor is real. Waiting in the wings, our silhouettes on the backstage walls were cut right from a 1980s action movie. 3. The wool and padded lining combined with the belt made every man wearing it look good. Skinny guys, athletic guys, old guys with a belly - their shoulders, chest, and waist looked better than they did in street clothes. 4. Well-made clothes just look good. Fun fact about that medieval-looking unit: They are the Swiss Guard, and only 189 strong against a combined army from multiple countries, they saved the Pope from an attempt on his life during the 1527 sack of Rome by holding a defensive position long enough for him to escape. A lot of them died doing so. To honor them, the Vatican vowed to maintain their unit in perpetuity, and to this day, that unit wears the same uniform and trains with the same weapons that the Swiss Guard did five hundred years ago. Sabaton actually made a song about them called The Last Stand. They are pretty rad.

Yugopnik made some videos on the nazi uniform which I really loved and broke down why fascists love the uniform, and how it projects power. Pretty sweet

I think it’s common for military officers to have their stuff super fitted. But yes the uniform is meh, me personally I think it helped keep alive by the fact George Lucas kinda used the style in some of his movies for baddies

This is a nerdy aside on that Nixon white house presidential guard uniform, but that holster only makes sense if you're a cavalryman riding across three states in the nineteenth century. That flap is there to keep the old timey gunpowder in your revolver from getting wet when it rains. Totally unnecessary with modern cartridge ammo, and if you have to draw your gun in a hurry the flap just gets in the way.

Active duty uniforms are not allowed to be tailored as they are designed to be functional. You will actually be charged if you do that. I am pretty sure that the Australian military does not even allow the higher ranking officers to tailor even their dress uniform (hence the name uniform, to all conform to the same standard.)

That austere big brother art with Mussolini's visage gazing emptily over the masses is indicative of the era, but before Fascism became established and still had the legitimacy of being revolutionary the art of proto fascism was undeniably stunning. It couldn't last because conformity ruled the day. Check out the Futurists.

I always assumed the praising of Nazi fashion was a meme. Look pretty similar to other uniforms of the time period.

I never understood this either. As a goth i always just saw it as edgies not understanding you can do edgy goth looks with nice boots and lapels or whatever without the fascism. Like you can do rich-goth without idolizing the fucking sith run galactic empire.

Also, Hugo Boss is just a bragging right. It's unusual. I'm not personally impressed by it, I'm just saying it's common sense that a lot of people get a buzz from a designer's name, period.

I think everyone is overlooking the emacculate drip of The Buckingham Palace Guards. Cannot argue with that ICONIC look. They reached perfection 200 years ago, and are still waiting for the rest of the world to catch up.

Vaush has a good point. But most in so far as the fact that the nazi uniforms weren’t uniquely stylish. I think a big problem here is that they are shown a lot more, especially through things like Indiana Jones and other films. While many other contemporary military uniforms had nowhere near the same level of continuous exposure throughout popular culture. That said, military uniforms almost only look cool when they fit well. No matter which uniform you’re speaking of. Another issue is that (imo) the US service uniforms we mostly see to contrast the nazis in movies and such are far more utilitarian and nowhere near as fashionable. But even so they are super cool in their own right. Context matters, but in general I’m a big fan of downplaying the nazi hype, and it is mostly that, hype.

I hate the use of them for the same reasons: the only reason anyone likes them is because people on the internet recreate them and make them out to be good, so those who dont look are just told they look cool and belive them: i dont blame them, its the facist people who post first. Im a big fan of the French uniforms (basicly from 1806-1916) and similar stuff. The modern stuff i dont like, the US marines look bad i think. good video.

I'm like, 2 minutes in and the only thing I'm taking away from this video is that you do not, in fact, have to give it to fascists that they were stylish. Also, the point about their uniforms not being special or unique is true. A lot of military uniforms from this time were of similar design/function. The name escapes me, but there's a German-speaking channel that actually examines uniforms of the US and German units fighting in the Hurtgen forest. They point out that German uniforms had considerably dropped in quality for most units, and that the US uniforms were also more functional in many aspects.

420. hell we can't even have our own modern day military having well-fitting uniform. my sister's dress uniform did not even fit - they just took one look at her height and said "here'. the only way the jacket would have fit her was if se suddenly lost 30 pounds - as for the skirt - no way that is going around her waist.

It’s a fact that the Nazis paid very close attention to their uniforms and as a result they did in fact look very sharp. However I hate when people talk about this and act like every other country didn’t also look sharp at this time. People just cared about the uniform more. And I personally love those jodhpurs that American and European soldiers wore back in the day. Though that was very early.
