what really hit me is Suikoden 2 Nanami, I remember when meeting her at the first time she made the hero mark on the ground as a funny gag (by crashing the hero and then drag him.. XD), but in the middle of the game when we can run away with her but we have to keep going for some reason... (to see the real end) she choose to keep supporting the hero, and when u reach castle level 4, u can see her room full of practicing tools, and u read a letter and heard the rumors that she keep practicing in the middle of the night showing that she really tries to do her best to protect/support the hero. and to give the final touch... she dead while protecting the hero... T_T (yes i know we can save her with best end but still). since this time Suikoden always remain deep in my mind as the best game that delivers such a deep story.
@88games864 жыл бұрын
Yeah Nanami is definitely an awesome character. You really get a sense of her inner-conflict throughout the game as she struggles with wanting to get away from the war but also knowing that her brother has his duty. Just one great example of character development throughout the series, but definitely an important one
@IricAlexis4 жыл бұрын
@@88games86 yeah but contrary, where I do feel Nanami is great but not so with half part of the Suikoden 2 story (especially after beating necklord the second time) i think after that point is pointless. that "duty" u mention is sound BS to me personally, since the start, I can understand the hero motivation to defeat Luca Blight, but after his defeat, I really didn't have enough reason to keep continuing other than want to see the ending. for me either ruled by the Hero/Jowy or another person (since in the best end, hero, jowy and nanami is leaving) it doesn't really matter since I know Jowy won't do much damage like Luca is. but people keep pushing the hero like they will lose much if the hero leaves. (and that people is Shu... where at the start he rejects hero offer by saying BS like he said it's doesn't matter who rules, money is the truth BS) I honestly want to escape with Nanami since it makes sense for me (except i want to beat necklord first then run away) since the start, the war is triggered by Luca and he is now a dead man, when the hero goes to Muse and Jowy ask him to surrender, I really think this is a pointless fight and want to surrender, (i also agree with Jowy making peace is not the solution since if there is still Highland and City state they will be a war next time) but ofc... victor must get his spotlight time and rescue? the hero. I also always see Nanami "resurrection" kinda BS since how 108-star destiny linked to the hero can/cannot save her (not like Suikoden 1 when it's literary give Leknat the power to do that, and that also one time only as Leknat says it) but in Suikoden 2 it's never shown Leknat or hero use their power, how TF Dr. Huan can/cannot save her because 108-star destiny is beyond me. we can only assume the hero tries to use BSR to heal Nanami that affects her recovery but it's never really shown since the hero chose to battle Gorudo instead where I think Jowy can defeat him alone (normally the scene will say "save her I will take care of this" or so but no...) and worse, after that, the hero only see her dead scene.. literary... he has one of true rune with so much healing power but ofc the hero doing nothing and have to see her death scene... so for me, I always see that continuing pointless war between Hero and Jowy just resulting Nanami dead (honestly didn't care other char like riddle or kiba that much compared to nanami), yes highland have a problem with Harmonia want to resurrect beast rune but the city-state also has an issue like genkaku issue, racist, selfish, etc. (i think this is the major issue why Jowy chose Highland side since in his last time in city-state he saw they are selfish being that makes a priority for their own state in Muse city meeting. and people said the hero unite them... but in the "best ending".. the hero leaves them with Jowy and Nanami... so will they have civil war again after that?)

I loved how characters which seemed to be throw away characters would come back with a vengeance and get expanded on, using history that was hinted on (Georg, Killy, Lorelai, Luc, Clive) Remember how in 2 Richmond mentioned how Georg had a hand in murdering a Queen in the south? Or how he mentioned Lorelai and Killy having a past with each other? Or when Luc used the power of the true Wind rune in 2 and started a plotline with Sasari that would be rapped up in 3? Heck, Luc in general going from a minor/major ally in 1 and 2 to the big bad in 3. And 4 showing why Ted was older then he should have been.

It's all those things, of course, but I'll mention a couple more The charm of those simple sprites...minimalist and stylized graphics that have maximum impact despite being low poly/pixel. They are just as cool today as they were back then. The music. A great variety of tracks that perfectly set the mood for the Suikoden world. The comedy. These games had some comedy due to translation challenges but much of it was deliberate. The original team clearly have a sense of humor. I mean....flying squirrel combo attacks? A chef fighting with a flying pan? They knew what they doing and they were laughing while doing it. Finally...while building your own army there might be an important life lesson in there about bringing unlikely people together to fight for a brighter future. Some of these characters are difficult to recruit but almost all of them are useful once you get them to join your cause. These games don't look like much on surface but when all the parts come together you have something pretty amazing.

I think another thing that you didn't really mention was, well, for me, Suiokden was one of the first games I played where characters died that I cared about. I know FF7 had Aerith. But it was iconic for me when **spoilers for those who have never played some of these games to follow** Gremio sacrificed himself so that the team could get out of Sonier Prison. I think that was the name of that place. And it was the first game that made me angry and actually give me the choice to kill the man who put us in that position. Then there was Pahn. (Funny story, my Grandma played and loved this game too lol, and she did something that made it so after Pahn died fighting your father he was still playable in her game, which I thought was awesome. But both deaths meant something to me and were iconic with that game. Even Odessa and Ted's deaths were all iconic to me. The same goes for Nanami in the 2nd game. After that it lost its touch a bit with 3 where you didn't really care for Chris's father much and as much as I liked that girl who sacrificed herself in Chris's story, I wasnt attached enough for it to really hurt-hurt, ya kno? So that one didn't sting too bad. And 4 I never really cared much for, same for Tactics tho I did finish Tactics. But 5 they bought it back with a vengeance with Lyon. I loveddddd Lyon. And I cared about Sialeeds. I liked his parents but we all kinda saw that coming for him to play a prominent role in the story. Another aspect of Suiokden that I loved was the different battles you could have. I loved the one on one system and I loved the war battles on top of regular stage boss battles. The fact that you got a castle and you could interact with everyone. Cook offs and do plays where you could have characters play roles that were the complete opposite of their characters. I loved being able to put Sid's wierd ass in plays and crack up at his awkwardness in the scene. These games were sooooooo good. And I hope the new one does this series justice. I hate seeing characters I love die but this game does an amazing job when it does it so I hope that trait remains in the new one. Iconic deaths that you will never forget. I love these games with a passion. But those were a few things I would've added to your list. The death aspect I felt was worthy of top 3 criteria. But that's all opinion and every body has their own. But I liked your video, Man. 😜👌 Heres to the new one being amazing too!!
@88games864 жыл бұрын
Hey man, thanks for thoughtful comment! Yeah you're right about the deaths being super impactful. I think that impact comes about as a result of many of the things I mentioned, like the depth each character has and how personal each relationship feels. I think the fact that the deaths have such impact is testament to how well the characters, their relationships and the story were fleshed out and developed. Anyway, thanks again for you thoughts, dude!

Spoiler alert: Correction. Pahn dies if he/you lose the duel against Teo. If he/you beat Teo then he survives. Also in Suikoden 1 if you gather all characters, Gremio gets revived by Leknaat. Similarly if you collect all characters in Suikoden2, Nanami survives and is revealed in the end of the game. Basically if you collect all characters in the game, you unlock the secret endings of the games.

@@nellioclark7571 The duel mini game isn't something completely standalone with no ways to influence it. Your character level, his weapon level and gear matter. So if you haven't been using Pahn to keep him well leveled, geared ect ect then obviously you'd have to rely way too much on observation of Teo's words in order to beat him in this rock-paper-scissors sort of minigame and luck. And even then if Pahn is way too behind in levels, grear/weapon level, then you can't win. If you kill Milim-The flower guy, you can't gather the 108 stars. If I remember correctly he is one of the stars you must collect or you need him alive to recruit some other character. It's been a while, I don't remember every detail. You must collect all 108 stars of destiny before the large briefing and gathering of the huge fight that is to come against the Empire(which if I remember correctly happens either after or before the fight with General Sonya). I suggest to play Suikoden 1 again and save often and keep separate saves. If you don't want to go through the process of trial and error then I suggest to google for a suikoden 1 character recruiting guide.

Yeah I guess it's good for that, and it's not a terrible game by any stretch, for me it's the horrible world map experience with a slow boat, long stretches of open ocean and stupidly high encounter rate just made the game unbearable. That said, I am planning to speed run it fairly soon so maybe I'm just a masochist haha
@PS1Fan19914 жыл бұрын
@@88games86 I will say that V didn't fix the high encounter rate which was a disappointment. The large stretch of ocean is only bad in IV when you don't know where the stars are; so it isn't great for a blind run, but in saying that, other Suikoden games had the same issues in their own ways with finding Stars of Destiny. As people have mentioned, getting Viki does improve travel and the boat does have a speed up function. III and IV had the most mixed opinions in the series, but they still get a lot of love. There are people who hate on them, but there are still plenty who love playing them. Personally, I love all five, but II in my opinion is the strongest entry comfortably.

Suikoden 1 and 2 were exceptional games on nearly every level... The game was so innovative and such a fresh approach to an RPG that I haven't seen anyone replicate as well. From the day I first got Suikoden one all those years ago they are still my favorite RPG's of all time... I have them on my phone so I can play them when I feel like it. I'm super hyped about Eiyuden Chronicles! The only thing that really went wrong with the games was the involvement of Konami who rushed development and gave us shoddy translations... Glad that the developers are now crowdfunded to work independently on Eiyuden! And they have a huge budget... 4 million more than they requested.

I played trough suikoden 2 once and I never understood how I could have gotten any other characters or story plots than I did, to me it all seemed like a normal linear jrpg (one of my favorites)

Pretty decent video. I only own Suikoden 2 but am working on Suikoden 1 via bug fix patch before I begin Suikoden 2 which I will ALSO play via bug fix patch. I only want to and am going to play Genso Suikoden 1 and 2, as well as the SuikoGaiden 1 and 2 psx visual novel with dating style elements hybrid side games to Suikoden 2. I have tons of games I am currently working on and I wont lie, at the moment Lunar 1 and 2 PSX have my priority attention as does Thousand Arms, and Tales of Destiny II PSX(Tales of Eternia), as well as Arc the Lad collecton and others like Wild Arms but regardless Suikoden is great atleast the 2D games anyway. I have started the new Fan translation of Genso Suikoden or SuikoGaiden: Woven Web of the Centuries fan translated into english for PSP(last "suikoden" titled game to release anywhere and its sadly got next to nothing to do with Suikoden in any way. It looks good for a PSP game but anyone expecting true suikodwn gameplay and story/connections you will be out of luck. As a stand alone game its quite decent, but dont expect "what makes suikoden special in it...its not there. Alright vood job on video and take care man. ✌

great story, great character development, and the challenge to gather all heroes are my reason to play suikoden when i was in junior high school #LOL, but tbh neclord fight's and luca blight's songs are epic!!

I have to agree about Suikoden 2. I think Suikoden 1 is good, and it was an important stepping-stone for the developers and allowed them to arrive at Suikoden 2, but personally I wouldn't necessarily rank it as an amazing game. But 2 is a legit masterpiece imo
@Symphony85p4 жыл бұрын
@@88games86 Suikoden is pure magic imo just a shorter game than Suikoden 2. Suikoden 2 is my favourite but the first one is up there too from the amazing soundtrack to the introduction of Neclord Gremios death so many moments that still is glued in your head. I like to combine suikoden 1 and 2 as 1 game and that results in the ultimate rpg imo. 👍
@StewNWT3 жыл бұрын
@@88games86 Disagree personally. Suikoden I was a better game for me, though I know I'm in the minority. The music is better in 1 than 2.

I'd say in Japan lot of the audience were girls as they like this type of storytelling (specially the bromance and rivalry part) which FF and DQ didn't offer yet. Being based on Chinese classics (actually the original inspiration were mangas with lot of main characters at the time like Captain Tsubasa and Saint Seiya, for instance). The characters and story linger with you as well. The game being sprite based aged better over the years. The graphics are charming. I like S3, but I think that one aged the worse in the series and usually it seems people are less fond of this one, specially newcomers to the series. Even S4 seems to get better praise nowadays. The games were overall easy, so easy to pick up. The focus on story and characters first and then gameplay and graphics later were the selling points not many games did. The games feel a complete experience even if they lack polish if you are used to Squaresoft and Enix games at the time. I'd say it was one of the games that change your views on what a good game experience is (sorta similar to games like Demon's Souls and Undertale in more recent years). Also, lot of the fanbase are "new" (in relation to the release years) and didn't really play back then. I don't think nostalgia plays much of a factor, but the word of mouth slowly increased the fanbase in the background. I consider this the GoT of JRPG before GoT was a thing. Maybe a more apt comparison would be LoGH. An anime that was very niche despite having a decent following in Japan, with a huge cast and expansive storytelling and charming dialogue. Fanbase in the West starts praising the series in the background and now it is a cult classic for Westerner fans as well. The intense love of the initial fanbase helped boost the cult status of the series. Collectors may also play a factor although it may be just a chicken and egg problem. Fanbase praising the series made this a cult classic which increased collectivity as it becames a must play PS1 game and then increasing exposure.

It is a simple JRPG....Simple Battle System, Characters are amazing from their backstory, Character Development and Growth, Story and many more....Even if this is your first time playkng it you will love it.. My suggestion is play Suikoden 1 or 2 first
@robertxhacker4 жыл бұрын
Its one of our first rpgs; ever or on a disc based console. Even though its an entry level rpg, its well done. Sometimes simple is best. Character development Plot Turn based Replayability Characters can die permanently (thats probably a pro and a con)

1 question. Is Suikoden 1 the only game you will play in twitich or you are planning to play the rest
@88games864 жыл бұрын
Great question! I actually started a casual play of Suikoden 2 on stream a few days ago and I'm going to continue it tomorrow (Saturday). At the moment, the plan is to alternate streams between speed running Suikoden 1, and casual playing Suikoden 2. Then when I'm done with those 2, I'll be moving on to others in the series for sure!
