It's really not easy to get the balance right, the Island lacks many things but has an abundance of natural beauty. I lived on the Island until I was 26 when work took me away, we returned every year frequently visiting family and holidays. A lot of British seaside towns are in a very bad way but the Island is in a much better position and thankfully still attracts many visitors, with lots of attractions, perhaps with the exception of Sandown, which unfortunately is getting left behind.

Am I right in thinking I can purchase videos and photos of the Island from Isle of Wight stock?

The one downfall island has is the cost of the ferry. Most conversations you'll have with people boils down to that. It's a killer for local people, businesses and opportunities for young people. The island has a lot going for it otherwise.
