You nailed it. My 1500 has these mirrors, and when they are down, when I look into the "blind spot" mirror prior to changing lanes on the freeway, I have to peer carefully at it to see what's around me. Having the mirrors in the tow mode, the "blind spot" mirror is in its logical position.

I have a 2019 ram 3500 and i leave the mirrors up for one simple reason. I can see way more with them up...i virtually have no blind spot and can see 5+ lanes of traffic at all times. I agree with you completely.

you finally articulated what so many people don't get. The mirrors are WAY more functional for everyday driving in the two position. In fact, I almost never use the larger glass on my mirror... the small one oriented in towing position is amazing. Big one only gets used for when I need to adjust it to see clearance of the boat or a low angle when parking or something.

It definitely is more practical having them up. That's how I'd run them. I am glad my jeep Cam with those Walmart stick on wide view mirrors, they are such a help especially backing out if a spot.

I just bought a 2014 Dodge 1500 Big Horn. I wasn't aware of the capability of folding the mirrors up. When I first got in the truck to drive it, when using the mirrors I felt that my eyes were crossing due to the set up of the outer convex mirror. I'm used to driving a semi. I'm sitting here 1200 miles away from our yard hoping my mirrors will fold up. It would be so natural for me to drive with them on the up position. As I was heading to the yard to leave out this run I almost had a close encounter with another car riding in the lane next to me. There is a lot I still have to learn about the truck due to not getting an owners manual with it. I do have a manual on it's way to the house now And yes, your truck looks sharp.

I disagree with the remark to have your vehicle insight of your mirror. The amount of your vehicle that you can see in your mirror could potentially be a car that you would’ve seen if you didn’t and my teacher always taught me the expression when you get into an accident how pretty did your truck look before you got hit.

As a professional delivery driver pulling trailers that are up to 8.5 wide daily, I can tell you that it is customary to have the tow mirror in the outward position. Some ask why I don't retract them after delivery - and it's because when you are used to the convex portion of the mirror being in a specific spot of view, changing it back and forth only serves to confuse things. When I need to change lanes abruptly, I need to know that the lane beside me is clear - I don't have to time to waste searching the entire mirror for the convex to verify nothing is the way.

Not sure if anyone said it yet but it's also annoying having to adjust them to see. When you flip them up, the controls on the power mirror are backwards which makes it difficult to adjust. Then just to flip them down and re adjust and then back up to tow, re adjust (backwards again) ... just easier to leave them up because of all the pros

I don’t disagree with the extra vis laterally back behind me when vertical. However, I found when I had it vertical, I had a substantial blind spot to the left and right to look around when I come to a T intersection and have to clear left and right before proceeding. Additionally, I use the small mirror only to clear my blind spot at my 7-8 and 4-5 o’clock position and the large mirror to see the larger area (5 parking spots) you are referring to with the small mirror.

Just tried this for the first time on my 2021 Ram 2500 and it’s a day & night difference. Soo easyto see the blind spots now amd definitely easier to backup. The only downside I see is that the truck is much wider now and gotta be more careful not to hit the mirrors. My wife will definitely have a hard time getting ised to the change 🤷‍♂️😎

I have an 07 cummins 5.9 with the 3rd gen tow mirrors and they are super nice even down but up you can see way more I also haul cows so much that I just leave em up but even without a trailer they are helpful up

I have had Ford's and dodges and never had a problem with visibility hell my 1977 dodge has 7 inches of lift and and 45 in tires and I don't have side side mirrors

You don't need to see the side of your truck with the regular mirrors, you need to see the blind spot, which when aimed correctly takes the blind spot away. The mirrors, in cars with a rear window, are for seeing the lanes next and rear of you. The rearview mirror, on the windshield, is for behind you. If you can see the car behind you with the side mirrors, you are not seeing the car in the next lane over. Next time at a stop light, look at the guy in front of you. If you can see their face in the side mirror, THEY cannot see in their blind spot either. So, on the drivers' side, aim the drivers' side mirror, so the lines of the lane are what you see closest. Then you are looking at the next lane over. I could be wrong but I didn’t see anybody talk about the difference in the width, with the mirrors up. I think it’s about a inch or maybe 2 inches wider. Not much difference here. But I drive on country roads with narrow roads. That inch or so could mean a possible broken mirror on some roads, passing another truck.

My 03 1500 has the other mirror in the corner and it's not adjustable. I flip it up so that I can use the big mirror for regular use and the small mirror then points at my back wheel which makes backing up a breeze. Cheers man

i put tows on my 98 318 dakota because i had the AWFUL mickey mouse ear mirrors, my blind spot was terrible when pulling (i pull a lot, my truck came with 1/2 ton suspension and it pulls like a dream for a dakota) and these new mirrors made a world of difference even for a smaller sized truck😂

When I drove a ram I used the down position most of the time but what I didn't do is overlap the view. There is no reason to see the same thing in both mirrors so you just adjust the outer mirrors right edge to the inner mirrors left edge and you get MOST of what you get in position 2. I got a couple of mpg more with the mirrors in position 1 so it was worth it.

While I doubt that mirror position is the most controversial issue concerning heavy/super duty trucks (more likely: rolling coal, excessive lifting, stacks in the bed, aggressive driving, etc., but just my opinion), I'm sure it does generate a lot of opinions. I leave mine down unless I'm towing; I think it looks goofy with them up and no trailer, but to each his own. However, I'll tell you a more practical reason I leave them down. Just yesterday I was sitting at a stoplight, and a Tahoe went by in the left turn lane and their mirror hit mine (yes, if your truck is lifted, you probably only have to worry about semis and other larger trucks hitting your mirrors). Fortunately it only left a tiny scratch, but if the mirror had been up, it likely would have busted it. I was annoyed that they got that close, but not much I could do about it at that point. Just thankful that it wasn't any worse.

I tow a trailer during the summer 2x a week. I can’t get used to using the mirrors in the down position. Ford and Chevy guys don’t like it. That’s because they are always behind the dodge and they can’t complain about the power of dodge, so they pick on the mirrors.

Your side mirrors are not adjusted correctly if you're seeing your truck. If you are, you basically have 3 rear view mirrors. Adjust your mirrors correctly and put your mirrors in.

The reason you can’t see as much is because you have them adjusted WRONG. The spotter mirror should look down the side of your truck and down at an angle to where you can see your tire touch the ground, then your main mirror should be adjusted out until the inside most point of it is picking up right where the spotter mirror leaves off. I can see 2 lanes over at my back bumper and 3.5 lanes over at the back of most trailers. It would be more intuitive if the spotter was on the inside, but if you know where you aimed them, it works fine. Lack of how to use a side mirror properly is an epidemic in America.

Where did you find a manual? I wish they could be easier to find. My last manual was a 1995 Ford F-150 with the 302. I loved that truck and the manual shifter. My next truck was a 2003 Ram 1500 4.7 awesome truck. Since then my next 3 trucks were all Dodge / Ram

Sooooo much more range of view with them flipped up. When towing driving a Ford I never had to extend them out because the vertical mirrors were more than capable. Dodge mirrors are meant to be vertical imo for daily driving and towing.

Ford so far are the best towing mirrors because you can get them to telescope out electronically and fold in. Gmc i don't think you can fold them out or in electronically. Nor do they telescope electronically but the design is better than dodge. Dodge they can fold in but to flip up the moose horns you gotta manually do it. I have a few tow trucks and my dodge i refuse to flip up my moose horns because it's just not asteticaly pleasing to me.

People don’t complain about Ford and Chevy guys having their tow mirrors out because they don’t drive with them out! At least 90% of them don’t. I have owned all three brands. An 04 F350, an 06 Dodge (5.9) and 00 Chevy. Never occurred to me to drive with tow mirrors out. Unless I was towing. yeah they give you more visibility, that’s the entire point of tow mirrors. Bit Ford and Chevy tow mirrors do to and they don’t drive with them out. It’s just annoying to the rest of the world because they take up the ENTIRE lane. Feels like you have to ease over when one’s coming because it looks like a plane. And in parking lots they need a spot for the truck and half a space on either side for the mirrors. Also they look stupid out. I know that’s just an opinion but pretty much everyone who doesn’t drive a dodge thinks so. lol I got much love for Cummins!!! Just fold your mirrors in! Everyone will appreciate it and your trucks will look cooler! lol
