You nailed it. My 1500 has these mirrors, and when they are down, when I look into the "blind spot" mirror prior to changing lanes on the freeway, I have to peer carefully at it to see what's around me. Having the mirrors in the tow mode, the "blind spot" mirror is in its logical position.

I have a 2018 mega cab. I drove with them down for the first 600 miles. I put them up when towing my toy hauler. They haven’t been down since. It makes a world of difference. I didn’t even know the tow mirror meme was a thing until later. My grandparents have a 2016 mega cab. I only recently just asked why they always left them up. Grandpa said “I can see more area behind me. There is no point to having them down, ever. In maybe but not down.” I agreed.

I’m a truck driver...totally agree that the mirrors are more functional when up than down. On my truck, I can’t bring myself to do it. They stay down unless I’m towing. It’s annoying adjusting them when changing, but with memory buttons it’s not a huge deal. There’s a happy medium with the spot mirror where they work up and down without adjusting. Btw, just to keep you updated, with a knee surgery the wife is enjoying the steps! Thanks again!

I don't think anyone questions the increased functionality of the mirrors when they're up, its the issue that Dodge doesn't make the arm retractable. I've got tow mirrors on my Silverado but when it's not in tow mode the mirror pod is only about 3 inches from the body instead of 8 when the arm is at full extension.

Thanks for finally explaining. The mirrors are definitely a poor design. Mirrors should not become less effective when not towing. I would absolutely be irritated having to deal with those & I even like ram pickups!
@ram895726 жыл бұрын
Brian Roszel I’d disagree that they become less effective when in the down position. I have a 2016 Ram 1500 with these same tow mirrors and I always drive with them down and still see fine. It all comes down to how you adjust them. Also when you have them up you have to turn your head more to see them which means more travel time and less overall road awareness even if by only half a second.
@rev9fan14 жыл бұрын
Well no it's an awesome design when flipped out, honestly the only reason I think Dodge gives the option for flip down/up is for off roading. I own a Power Wagon and with the mirrors down and adjust right I can see every rock I'm crawling and it's great for spotting everything. But not many people actually off road with their trucks, it also gives another 3 inches or so of clearance between obstacles, but I have auto fold in so it's not really a problem

you finally articulated what so many people don't get. The mirrors are WAY more functional for everyday driving in the two position. In fact, I almost never use the larger glass on my mirror... the small one oriented in towing position is amazing. Big one only gets used for when I need to adjust it to see clearance of the boat or a low angle when parking or something.

@larryschmitz42816 жыл бұрын
I just bought a 2014 Dodge 1500 Big Horn. I wasn't aware of the capability of folding the mirrors up. When I first got in the truck to drive it, when using the mirrors I felt that my eyes were crossing due to the set up of the outer convex mirror. I'm used to driving a semi. I'm sitting here 1200 miles away from our yard hoping my mirrors will fold up. It would be so natural for me to drive with them on the up position. As I was heading to the yard to leave out this run I almost had a close encounter with another car riding in the lane next to me. There is a lot I still have to learn about the truck due to not getting an owners manual with it. I do have a manual on it's way to the house now And yes, your truck looks sharp.
@f16grinch33 жыл бұрын
I don’t disagree with the extra vis laterally back behind me when vertical. However, I found when I had it vertical, I had a substantial blind spot to the left and right to look around when I come to a T intersection and have to clear left and right before proceeding. Additionally, I use the small mirror only to clear my blind spot at my 7-8 and 4-5 o’clock position and the large mirror to see the larger area (5 parking spots) you are referring to with the small mirror.

I've got an F250 I keep my mirrors in cause I don't want to slap mirrors with someone on a narrow road an I pull a 16 foot trailer everyday. What I don't like about the Dodge trucks with the mirrors up is there so much wider than down.
@justinbarnes54983 жыл бұрын
As a professional delivery driver pulling trailers that are up to 8.5 wide daily, I can tell you that it is customary to have the tow mirror in the outward position. Some ask why I don't retract them after delivery - and it's because when you are used to the convex portion of the mirror being in a specific spot of view, changing it back and forth only serves to confuse things. When I need to change lanes abruptly, I need to know that the lane beside me is clear - I don't have to time to waste searching the entire mirror for the convex to verify nothing is the way.

I have a Ram with the regular mirrors and have wanted to get the tow mirrors since I got the truck and finally got the option and I would drive with them flipped up most of the time because of all the reasons you mentioned in the video but I have heard alot of people yourself included say they are kinda pointless with the mirrors down and the view is way less which I understand but is this the same view as the regular power fold mirrors? If so I am alright with that but I don't want to get new mirrors for the normal position to be worse than my current mirrors. Thank you. Edit so I have the mirrors now and even in the down position I believe it's rougly the same view as the regular mirrors but takes a little getting used too i have noticed everything is a little bit off on the main mirror but it could be the way the mirror is angled and the lighting, the convex mirror in down position is pretty much pointles

Usually if I see one parked with it mirrors up ill put just the passenger side one down for him. You know, out of courtesy.

When I had my 4th gen whether I rode with the mirrors up or down the small mirrors or blind spot mirrors how ever you call them I never had to adjust because they where in the perfect spot either way
@thekeatons46 жыл бұрын
I have mine adjusted perfectly where they are the same up or down, but I leave mine up. I do it for safety. Seeing if a little car is in my blind spot of my dually is more important than some teen saying I look stupid! I tow a 40' trailer often so I don't want to have to think about where my mirrors are or if they are up and down. Switching back and forth can't be good for you especially if you need to see if you're able to merge quickly and you don't have time to think!
@TylerB1756 жыл бұрын
TheKeatons4 I understand why you leave yours up all the time then, to me if you rarely tow anything I would leave them down, mine stayed down seeing the fact I only towed once in a blue moon

If mirror hits mirror its 100% on you if yours are out , dot allows for the mirror itself in width ,not unlimited brackets

All those upgrades and the truck will spend 99.9% of its life on blacktop and never pull a trailer. Such a waste of a good truck.
@ryan25466 жыл бұрын
It’ll pull and haul things time to time, but I’m truck enthusiast and building them is what I love so although I’m not slinging mud with this one I’ll def pull and haul some stuff don’t you worry

Cant believe these young guys think they look cool in mall crawlers. Tires sticking half way out the fenders. Truck that never sees mud. Pathetic

@@kc8653 yeah, because fuck having nice shit when you can afford. Just leave it factory and beat the hell out of it, am I right?

I could be wrong but I didn’t see anybody talk about the difference in the width, with the mirrors up. I think it’s about a inch or maybe 2 inches wider. Not much difference here. But I drive on country roads with narrow roads. That inch or so could mean a possible broken mirror on some roads, passing another truck.

whichever way works best is what id go with when im backing up id rather see more of whats behind me than a little bit of it theres nothing wrong with seeing more so you know where other people are or cars and tbh that view backing up cant be beat

I run the tow mirrors out on my Ram 3500 for the same reason. Especially being lifted 6”

Exactly Can’t see shit with them down

That makes sense, but it’s not as easy to get in garage with mirrors up. Also more wind drag with mirrors up. (Fuel mileage)
@kc86536 жыл бұрын
Did he just really say it's hard to keep it clean. Lmao. It's a truck if you ain't got mud on it you got a car. Which this is basically well built mall crawler

First video I watched was the easy tailgate thing It just popped up so I watched it. I bought my first pick up truck a couple weeks ago. And it is a 2008 Dodge Ram 4.7l magnum (not a hemi 😭 ) and it’s 2wd unfortunately so I’ll be making it a street truck.

Slam that thing and tune it up!!! Only ways I like trucks! Jack em up or slam them on their nuts

Hate the Dumbo mirrors but you are absolutely correct! I won't drive in Moose Mode unless I have a trailer for the simple fact I don't wanna be "that guy"!
@DavidWykofka2 жыл бұрын
When I drove a ram I used the down position most of the time but what I didn't do is overlap the view. There is no reason to see the same thing in both mirrors so you just adjust the outer mirrors right edge to the inner mirrors left edge and you get MOST of what you get in position 2. I got a couple of mpg more with the mirrors in position 1 so it was worth it.

Had those stand up mirrors on my 2004 Ram, I had them up ONCE for towing a trailer... Just traded it in a month ago...

Anybody else having head gasket coolant issues on their 6.7's? I got a 2017 dually 4d 4wd with just 100k mi and it is loosing coolant like crazy until I put some Bars Leak professional in it and I'm afraid it's gonna go again soon. Been about 2000 mi with no issues yet but I feel like it's a ticking time bomb. 4300$ to fix they say even tho online it says it ranges from 950 1100 for parts and labor

I drive mirrors down unless I'm towing my 36 foot camper. Then it's mirrors up. Also, pickups, regardless of what make are small. The crane I drive down the road on my channel is over 11 feet wide and 85 feet long. A pickup is like driving a Prius after a day in the crane. Lol

I guess I see where your coming from. I’ve got a 2000 2nd gen and my mirror doesn’t have the big bottom mirror is why I ride with my mirrors down.
