Robots are assumed to lack by default. This allows the author to highlight and explore a single trait without breaking suspension of disbelief. A "human learning to love" story... has to have a broken human. Either a young child, or a spectacularly unlucky adult. But a "robot learning to love" story can start with a believable, empathizable robot from the beginning. A "human learning to dream" story... has to have a broken human. A "human learning to choose" story... has to have a broken human. A robot can be imagined to lack those by default, so we keep suspension of disbelief that it needs to learn. A human has to grow into who we see on screen. Their past has to be justified, their problems contextualized. But a robot can simply appear as is, built for purpose, which simplifies the narrative.

I would like to add , that robot stories shows how heartless constructs doing their best to grow or earn a heart... that itself is already a strong point to remind ourselves that our own hearts can sometimes be neglected or even be sacrificed at times with the choices we made for us to get a "better outcome" in our life. By seeing how the robots go through so much to the point of sacrificing their own lives just to have a heart really speaks volumes on how important our hearts can be.

Now I’m picturing an alternate universe where robots rule the world, and their top selling blockbusters are about humans who rise above their emotions to logically solve problems in an orderly fashion.

The Iron Giant broke my heart when I was a little girl... I can still hear "Je vais... mourir ?" in my head, and DAMN, I start crying 20 years later !! I recommend reading or watching Pluto (by Naoki Urasawa); this manga covers everything you talk about in your (very good) video!

Have not finished vid so I hope it gets brought up but the Iron Giant was built up on the question "what if a gun had a soul" or I've also seen "what if a gun didn't want to be a gun," and I think that's a big part of these robot stories. Robots are machines, i.e. tools, meaning they have a designed purpose. But they also stand in for people, so they all get to this core question of "can we be more than what we're supposed to be?" At least thats how I like to look at it.

Robots are a INCREDIBLY powerful tool for contrast against humanity. It's interesting that when a robot can communicate, it has way more human characteristics and emotions. This also happens with animals so that when we can actually understand them, they gain humanity. Us humans have probably a similar view of robots and animals "It's in their nature". Thanks for the amazing video, made me appreciate and rethink other robot movies as well.

Also because they're robots, writers have no problem giving them consequences they normally would not give human characters.

Robots also bypass whatever prejudices the audience might have. The set up for what they were is pretty easy and already shorthanded by the very fact that they are a robot, so the writer can just jump into the story shortly.

The sad thing is, scientific discovery is showing we have no free will, our dreams are thus determined by this and in reality, love is conditional, even from parents. Robots let us explore and express our desire to be human, which embodies a naive freedom, maybe even longing.
