Happy Thanksgiving! Thankful for your channel. My two Rolexes were bought at AD. Two tone DJ41 and mint green DJ41. Frankly I enjoy the chase and the AD game. I enjoy going in periodically and trying on watches and chatting. My guidelines are buying Rolexes, Tissots and Tag Heuers from my AD because I try to support them. “Waiting” on SS Date Sub and Sprite. Rolexes make me smile when I look down and see them on my wrist. That’s why I buy them. Perceived or real scarcity makes me desire them even more.

Concerning purchasing a watch, I’ve never been interested in the grey market nor contemplated how much I can get for resale. I pretty much buy watches that I planning on wearing and Im not concerned about what people think. I purchased from AD’s so I have no concerns. Great video as usual Tony not to worry you make perfect sense.

You are spot on. We never thought about resell value or value retention back in the days. A watch was usually THE watch you would wear, having some watches in the drawer didn’t equal to a „collection“ it was just the „old“ watches you had. Anyhow, nowadays, with the easy access to sell and purchase watches, it’s way more important to look at the resell value, we want to experience more watches in a shorter time. If I want a watch, I either really look at the best way to purchase it legally and in the best condition without issues. Mostly it’s pre-owned but pretty young watches. But I also keep an open mind if I come across a good deal on auctions etc. sometimes I end up buying a watch that wasn’t on my radar at all and ended up loving it way more than I would have ever thought….🤷🏼♂️

Thanks for another thought provoking vid Tony. Ive been a watch addict for years. Since retiring my number of fixes per year has reduced but the affliction is still there! Ive always bought what I liked from Rolex to Citizen and usually to mark an event in my life, for example I bought the new 41mm sub date to celebrate my retirement. I never considered the re sale value or watches as an investment. The you tubers who were pushing the investment aspect seem to have changed their tune with the repositioning of the market. Keep up the great content man.👍

Hello, thank you Tony for the video! I really enjoy your videos. I got my Rolex OP 41 black dial at AD, and I just walked in and ask what watches they have in stock. Goodness they have exactly what I was looking for! In less than 30 minutes I walked out of Rolex dealer with my new Rolex, and I didn’t pay the premium price for it. Not just that but I have my Rolex warranty from Rolex and not from any gray market dealer warranty. Tony keep doing the good work!

Great video Tony, always love this type of content. There is a grey market dealer here in MA area called Paul Duggan whom has been around 40 years. Paul was like the OG grey market guy. But I think even he would tell you he never would have imagined what happened in the grey market just prior to and of course during COVID. Completely insanity. I for one am glad the market is cooling and those of us who really love Rolex can hopefully get them sooner than previously thought.

Great video Tony. There definitely has been a paradigm shift in the watch market. People are more concerned with a watch retaining its value more than ever before. You are very correct in your assessment of Happy Jewelers. They guarantee the authenticity of any watch they sell and they give a two year warranty. I’ve been doing business with them for over 20 years. They are my go to watch and jewelry shop. They are the epitome of the American dream. They have become very successful in the last several years, but you’d never know it because they are so very down to earth. Great guys. You really need to visit . Let me know your availability and I can introduce you to the owners, Danny and Gabe. Take care.

Hey, Happy Thanksgiving. Love hearing you talk about pre pandemic facts. I thought there always were grey dealers (only because they say they were there selling under list, not because I knew about them at the time) though. I bought a Datejust on IFC when I was 20 (fantastic move) and was surprised to sell it for what I paid for it years later. Waited a year for a Sea-Dweller decades ago, but could walk in and pick up a Deepsea or Hulk maybe 8 years ago.

Great video Tony. I’ve never bought a watch with the thought of resale in mind. I bought it because I wanted it. As a matter of fact, I bought all of my Rolex watches from a grey market dealer 25-30 years ago, only because he was cheaper than any AD and I avoided sales tax. In hindsight I should have kept every one of those watches and not stupidly sold them to fund the next purchase. Ever since he stopped selling, I’ve purchased AD only. Maybe it’s just me, but the only Daytona I was a fan of was the meteorite dial one, and even that one I found it difficult to see the time. Not enough contrast for me. Too noisy of a dial to tell the time. Same goes for a Breitling. Can’t see the time unless I look hard enough. That’s why I love the Sub and GMT, plain and simple.

Happy Thanksgiving Tony! This video made perfect sense to me; I know exactly what you are saying. For me it has always been I see it I like it I want it. That being said when I was buying my Milgauss years before pandemic I did consider preowned and would regularly check out Bobs watches. I did have to save up for it so if I could save some money it would make sense to me; I ended up not buying preowned.I never bought watches thinking about selling them. I never plan to;however, I did take into consideration if SH*T hit the fan and I needed money my Rolex's would do decently in keeping a large part of its value.

I've bought one watch on the grey market, and completely agree with the point - if something happens, I'm kinda limited to walking into a Rolex AD and taking my lumps. I've also bought pre-owned from my favorite brick and mortar jeweler - and much prefer that - I trust them and know they'll take care of me.

Thanks for the episode. I would love to buy from the AD, but I just can't get a call for the watches I'm requesting. I should add too that they are not popular models i.e. white gold submariner or entry level calatrava :-(
@talkingtimepieceswithtonyАй бұрын
Man, that sucks. Just keep checking in. Hope you get the call soon.
@kk7smАй бұрын
That was certainly an interesting ramble and I identify with it! I mostly buy from the AD and I mostly want things that are something special in some way, at least special to me. I like Rolex, sure, but they're like the Starbucks pumpkin spice latte of the watch world. You can only get them at certain times and they're honestly pretty basic. Thus, I don't really have any burning desire for a Submariner or a Daytona. Today, I'm wearing a 25 year old Seamaster GMT that just does great. Yesterday, I was wearing a JLC Polaris in the green. Back to the topic at hand, I don't consider residuals on a watch purchase at all. I'm far more interested in whether I like the watch and it speaks to me in an emotional sense. So, I own one Rolex someone bought for me that rarely sees the light of day and I wear watches I think are cool and well, because I like the ones I bought so much, I just very rarely sell one.

I think there is human nature to try to get something that is elusive. I liked the sub in the 80’s and when I bought it in 2008 is 0:06 was exactly what I wanted. The Hulk was right next to it in the display case along with GMTs, Daytonas etc. I try to remember that time when I could have anything in the case. I got the sub because I had liked it since I was a teen or knew anything about the market.

It’s a valid point - I never thought of or researched the Cartier tank must (black dial) until I walked into Cartier and bought it based purely on aesthetics. I usually buy based on a combo of heritage, design and movement - but truthfully I sell most of my watches after a few years and move into something new. Not the tank must - I just can’t get enough of that watch..quartz, no hype, cheap crystal. Most worn.

I would go grey market for a few reasons: not using watches as an investment, not moved by the buying experience, and an AD isn’t going to discount enough to justify an unnecessary purchase. I don’t “need” a Seamaster Professional, so it’s best to waste as little as possible.
@talkingtimepieceswithtonyАй бұрын

@ FWIW, I do feel there’s some added value to brick and mortar stores or ADs. You can build a relationship, keep money in the community, and even occasionally get a better deal. It comes down to whatever dollar amount we’re willing to pay for the added value or sense of security that is supposed to come with buying from an AD. It could be something simple as a full warranty, original papers with your name, receipt, or wanting to experience interacting with a real person if it’s a big moment. My Sub was from an AD. It was great experience, but well over 20 years ago. I’m different now and can more or less get the same experience from a used piece with normal wear. Another factor is that I work someplace where an expensive watch would be perceived as showing off, so it’s normally a G-shock or Fenix 5
@aaronoldaker-d4iАй бұрын
People want it because it’s expensive or they can’t have it or it attracts recpect or perceived wealth. And then there’s us; we want it because it’s cool.
