Kashi Sinha Sikhism does not force people to keep hair. Its your own choice whether you want to keep this unique identity or not. People are free to enter as well as free to leave sikhi. Sikhs who keep long hair, wear turban and keep beards do this bcoz of choice not force. Besides, google about khalsa aid and see their work towards humanity. We sikhs believe in humanity. Gurudwara langar is another example. I am amazed at your comment. So you love the fact that married woman in your religion are forced to keep fasts for their husbands during karwa chauth? Don't get me wrong, but in my personal experience, many of female hindu friends who were comparatively "westernised" were forced to keep karwa chauth by their in laws. Is this correct?

The way I see this is that it can go both ways. It depends on how you view yourself with hair and beard. Buddhist monks for example see the hair and beard as a point self and pride and link to the material world, so they would shave.

What about nails? Unlike hair, they are dead and serve no spiritual or practical purpose. Nails are actually a detriment because if left uncut they can cause infection. Hair on the other hand is actually alive, and the point of the kang is to remove to dead hair.

it is very hard for people here in America and western countries to follow 5ks ... it actually becomes issue because people who call themselves Sikh are sometimes not able to be of service to their families due to lack of job opportunities, etc... i feel you would have more young followers if they didn't feel ashamed and like they aren't "true" Sikhs due to 5ks.. if cutting hair was welcome you would have many young punjabis following SGGS but the 5k prevents them due to shame and feelings of inferiority for having cut hair

@@ssingh8166 it's not a slap to Hinduism, it's just evolution of Hinduism, Sikhism does address some of the bad cultural practices, like casteism, and untouchability, of Hinduism followers, but then those bad things were never a part of the vedas, or Sanatan dharma, they were latter additions through others like Manu smriti. Guru Baba Nanak dev ji, helped clearing those cultural ills. Hindus consider Baba Nanak dev ji and Sikhism as a path to God, and respect Sikhism as one of their own.

@@rudrahx4496 I think it all depends on what your motivation is to change your appearance a certain way. In my case it is to keep my marriage without drama. My act of cutting my hair is selfless, it were entirely up to me I would let it all grow, but if I did that my marriage would fall apart and my wife would be unhappy and my two young children would be traumatized by that (my parents divorced when I was young). Therefore I cut my hair to keep the peace in my family. If keeping kesh is in my future then Waheguru will make a path where no one is hurt by it.

The shed hair entangled on scalp are removed by combing , they are replaced by growth of new ones in their places and the cycle goes on . Trimming of out grown nails are like trimming the hair .so your analogy of combing out hai and trimming nails is not correct .

Kesh is for identity only and applies to uncut head hair for men and women and in addition beards for men only. Amritdhari women are free to remove body and facial hair. Bhatt Vahis were scribes of the Gurus (from Guru Arjan’s times onwards), the scribe from Guru Gobind Singh’s time was ‘Narbud Singh’, his writings and accurate account from the Vasakhi event of 1699 is still available today. His writings clearly state that in 1699 when Guru Gobind Singh created the Khalsa order, the 5 K’s were, Kara (iron/steel bracelet), Kachera (underpants), Kirpan (sword/dagger), Kanga (comb) and Keski (meaning head covering, Dastar or Turban). The four prohibitions for Amritdhari Sikhs are: - no halal meat, no intoxicants (alcohol, tobacco or drugs), no extramarital sex and no cutting Kesh which means head hair for men and women and in addition beards for men only. His writings clearly state ‘Keski’ as one of the 5 K’s and not cutting Kesh (head hair and beards for men - only) as one of the four prohibitions. If Kesh was one of the 5 K’s, then it would not have been one of the four prohibitions as Guru ji would not have repeated his instructions, also all the 5 K’s have to be given, keeping Kesh uncut is an instruction that has to be adhered to as are the other 3 prohibitions. Guru Gobind Singh did not use the word ‘roam’ which means all body hair as one of the prohibitions, (nor did he use it as one of the K’s which would have meant 4 K’s and 1 R (roam). Therefore, women including Amritdhari women are free to remove facial and body hair. All 5 k’s were articles of a soldier’s uniform, Kara to protect against a strike to the wrist, Kachera for ease of movement in battle, Kirpan for defence, Keski a head guard and the Kanga for discipline of combing Kesh. ‘Kesh’ meant uncut head hair (and beards for men only), the joora on top of the head was meant for two purposes, to protect against a blow to the head in battle and to create a unique identity to distinguish Sikhs from other faiths e.g. Muslims wore turbans and kept beards but did not have uncut hair, Hindu Sadhus kept jooreh but didn’t have turbans. Hence, the combination of uncut head hair (and beards for men only) and the Keski (turban, dastar) created a unique identity distinguishing Sikhs from all others. The ideas of the SGPC in their rehat maryada and of others who claim keeping unshorn hair across the body equals spirituality is wrong and is only an after - thought as spirituality has to come from inside one’s mind and body. Kesh is for identity only and means head hair for both men and women and beards for men only.

I think what Bhaji is trying to say is that we are of no value (in a good sense) so to keep kesh or not isn't all that important, what matters is how we perceive our selves. I'm a westerner coming to Sikhi and kesh and turban are a challenge. I WANT to grow my hair and would love to start wearing turban, but I don't because I am married and my wife met me before I found Sikhi. I cut my hair and don't sport a beard because it would create much difficulty in my marriage which wouldn't only affect me and my wife, but also our two small children. I understand the reasons behind kesh and turban, but it shouldn't be over emphasized which I think is what Satpal is saying?

Please give some feedback on the following: The beard and hair don't make sense to this one; It's easier to eat, to take care (clean) a human which is short in hair and beard, it's easier to practice exercise as well. If that's how a human is and we should accept it, why did we develop clothes to protect from the elements? Why do we develop science with the intellect? We wouldn't have developed language, it was invented! Why do you use a turban, isn't it learned from your ancestors or cultural influence? It's not how human came to be!? These might have a different argument to give them power and truth, seems to me it's just a choice that you've made for your character, easy to say you chose to do nothing, but now... don't you have to do certain things to keep the beard clean which you didn't need to do before? Don't you have to use different products to take care of it? Or do you let it be natural? Seems to me there is always a way to justify your actions. Enlightenment has nothing to do with the way we look, it is internal, it is understanding by experience of the self. How can I interact without the I? There are no questions in the silence which is called the self, but there are no answers either, we need the person to play the game, don't we? I also don't understand how several gurus say that the moment of enlightenment is the same as leaving the body, like a thousand volts... I've come a long way in understanding and experiencing, but I might be away from enlightening since I didn't die or cried as much as the stories tell, I also keep using the word I, since I keep referring to myself as person, but it's the character that I use anyways, how can I not use the I and be on youtube. André Periquito yes Ideally sikhi is all about learning and we believe the spiritual battle is within but the significance of the outer appearance of a Sikh regarding the outer appearance was established by the 10th Guru Gobind Singh ji when he established the Khalsa and the Khalsa is a saint-soldier ; so a Sikh has the spirituality of a saint but thinking and appearance of a soldier. When you take Amrit then you accept this hukam(order) from the guru as you become Khalsa.

An average Sikh is a ‘sadhu’ without ‘saadhna’. The whole system is upside down. We create sadhus first and then expect them to do saadhna. Ideally, it should be the other way around. One does ‘saadhna’, ‘tap’, meditate, goes inwards, connects with that ‘oneness’ and in the process gets rid off his/her ego. And once the ego is gone, how one looks, complements from others, importance and attention from others, all these things becomes insignificant. The question of cutting or not cutting hair, tying daarhi etc… becomes irrelevant. The sikh community is in a sad state, we are giving our children sadhu’s roop on a plate. We forcefully tell them not to cut their hair, we threaten them that if they did, the ‘babbaji’ is gonna be angry and you will have to pay for it when you die; or blackmail them with the qurbaniya stories of gurus. The child has done no tap/saadhna/meditation whatsoever, he has no realisation of the god other than the baba ji sitting somewhere in the skies keeping a watch on him if he cuts his hair, his ego hasn’t vanished yet and then these kind of questions arises in his mind. I personally feel that the 10th guru missed the trick by making kesh mandatory, anything we do as a mandatory act or a rule has no significance whatsoever and sooner or later it loses its value. May be it worked 300 years ago, but it has no significance in todays time. The point you made that one cuts his hair because he wants to look good or want complements, are you implying that long hair or beard makes one look ugly? The explanation that sikhs don’t cut hair because one shouldn’t focus on physical appearance doesn’t sound quite right when you consider that the 10th guru clearly instructed and made it mandatory for sikhs to wear a turban so that they ‘look in a certain way’. He gave his followers a ‘physical identity’. It’s a harsh truth - ‘Look’ has a very important place in Sikhism; one needs an unbiased mind, free from the baggage of ‘qurbaniyan’, to see that. And when there is a physical identity, there is ego. Sikhs often say that their turban is their pride, pride is nothing but food for ego. The 10th guru made it mandatory to wear a turban, didn’t he focus on physical appearance or ‘the body’ or how he wants his believers to look in a certain way? Isn’t that contrary to the whole concept of how I look should not matter? Cutting hair to look good or to gain complements and wearing a turban as a uniform, both are fundamentally same, as in both cases, one is focussing on the physical appearance. Looking good is not always the reason why some sikhs cut their hair. I know many sikhs who just can’t understand the concept of wrapping their head with such a huge piece of cloth all day long. I live in the scorching heat of Rajasthan, when I remove my turban after having it on for 12-14 hours in 45 C of heat, my hair is drenched in sweat. How is that even intelligent? Wrapping your head in a 5-meter-long and half a meter-wide cloth for all day has no practical significance.

The world is more interconnected now, more people are travelling to new places, meeting new people, learning about other faiths, cultures, lifestyles, there is more exposure to ‘counter-viewpoints’, all these things will contribute towards planting the seeds of doubt and scepticism. @@tanuj886 During Guru Gobind Singh’s time, the turban, carried a totally different connotation from that of a hat in Europe. The turban represented respectability and was a sign of nobility. At that time, a Mughal aristocrat or a Hindu Rajput could be distinguished by his turban. The Hindu Rajputs were the only Hindus allowed to wear ornate turbans, carry weapons and have their mustache and beard. Also at this time, only the Rajputs could have Singh (“lion”) or Kaur (“princess”) as their second name. Even the Gurus did not have Singh as part of their name, until the Tenth Guru. The downtrodden followers of the Sikh faith did not have the means to display aristocratic attire, nor were they allowed to, even if they had the means. (Doing so was usually equivalent to a death sentence.) It was in this context that Guru Gobind Singh decided to turn the tables on the ruling aristocracy by commanding every Sikh to carry a sword, take up the name Singh or Kaur, and have kesh (hair) and turban displayed boldly, without any fear. This effectively made his followers see themselves on a par with the Mughal rulers. When we are in the presence of the Guru, Guru is giving us the gift of his energy. That energy is sacred and when we retain it, Guru's energy lives in us and that gives us the living experience of Guru. To help retain that energy we cover our heads with a turban.

Thanks for this video! Cutting hair is just a way to fit in society.. I'm living in France, and not coming from Indian background.. having kesh and turban is just alien to me, even if i am interested in Gurbani. You seem to neglect the fact that hair and turban is much more cultural than spiritual. Punjabis also grow beards and tie turbans to look smart and reliable to others.. looking like a nihang with chakar and all is just a kind of folklore ! The dal and sikh warrior units are not relevent in Europe.. if you are Indian and want to fit in sikh orthodox practicing people then its okay, but if you are just a regular french citizen, it's just excentricity.

To grow your hair is to accept the will of the Lord. If God is perfect and does not make a mistake, then he didn't make any mistake by putting hair on your body. Remember, satgur Nanak sahib gave three commandments to bhai mardana, and one of those commandments were to never cut the hair. Know this as well, guru gobind Singh sahib also said to remain in the "saabat soorat" form as it is the will of the Lord. Your birth isn't to make people happy or it fit in, this is your chance. Gobind milan ki eh Teri baria. This is your chance to merge with the Lord. So take your pick, you want to make your beloved Guru/Waheguru happy who can eradicate your ego, or you want manifest in the wordly pleasures and waste your chance.

Our tenth Guru had asked us to keep our hair, he did not meant to grow it. When you cut your hair regularly, that means you are actually growing your hair at the speed of six inches in a year. So if you start cutting your hair regularly, that means you would have grown your hair ten feet long. So my final question would be ,why do you want to grow your hair ten to fifteen feet long in your lifetime.

Hair bands didn't exist in that age - the turban is old technology. It's not obsolete tho. A real Singh protects his head and avoids strikes but inflicts them. Therefore keeping his honour and turban in tact. Warfare is a different subject of course it will come off but there are also elephants horses and arrows to contend with.

The bhunga is thick cloth and contains the hair so is better technology than a thread. Some Sikhs find hair a hindrance in fights because they are not trained. The guru gave us arms to fight with as opposed to bare fist as it is cleaner and avoids risk of the hair becoming a detriment. He understood unarmed fighting was scrappy and hair may be a hindrance. In times of guerilla warfare when Sikhs were heavily out numbered. Arms helped allot. Again it all comes down to the hair being a mark of a warrior.

I don't believe in rituals of hinduism bcz they don't make sense that's why i leave it (it is very hard still on this date to repel my parents specially mother to do things for hindu gods krishna sculpture and forcing me to do rituals too.) It is very hard to go against them bcz im not financially independent i also feel regret to do this but only one thing motivated me spiritual life questions and at death what I'm gonna think about my life. How to tackle this all hinduism and sikhism with studies. 2. I don't want to sikh bcz i found rituals in sikhism specially in shej dharis ryt now . 3 but i love teachings of all gurus they are so meaningful loving towards creator specially of (1,5,10)th guru. Kesh is for identity only and applies to head hair for men and women and beards for men only. Amritdhari women are free to remove body and facial hair. In 1699 when Guru Gobind Singh created the Khalsa order, the 5 K’s were, Kara, Kachera, Kirpan, Kanga and Keski (meaning head covering, dastar or Turban). All 5 k’s were articles of a soldier’s uniform, Kara to protect against a strike to the wrist, Kachera for ease of movement in battle, Kirpan for defence, Keski a head guard and the kanga for discipline of combing Kesh. ‘Kesh’ meant uncut head hair (and beards for men only), the joora on top of the head was meant for two purposes, to protect against a blow to the head in battle and to create a unique identity to distinguish Sikhs from other faiths e.g. Muslims wore turbans and kept beards but did not have uncut hair, Hindu Sadhus kept jooreh but didn’t have turbans. Hence, the combination of uncut head hair (and beards for men only) and the Keski (turban, dastar) created a unique identity distinguishing Sikhs from all others. The Bhatts were scribes of the Gurus (from Guru Arjan’s times onwards), the scribe from Guru Gobind Singh’s time was ‘Narbud Singh’, his writings and accurate account from the Vasakhi event of 1699 is still available today. His writings clearly state ‘Keski’ as one of the 5 K’s and not cutting Kesh (head hair and beards for men - only) as one of the four prohibitions. Guru Gobind Singh did not use the word ‘roam’ which means all body hair as one of the prohibitions, therefore women including Amritdhari women are free to remove facial and body hair. The ideas of the SGPC in their rehat maryada and of others who claim keeping unshorn hair across the body equals spirituality is wrong and is only an after - thought as spirituality has to come from inside one’s mind and body. Kesh is for identity only and means head hair for both men and women and beards for men only.

Guru Nanak taught us how to connect to the oneness in the Japji Sahib. The 9 guru’s prior to Guru Gobindji did not require their disciples to have the five K’s to connect to the oneness within our selves. What Guru Gobind ji gave us is unique and special but I feel that those things do give us an identity for our selves as Sikhs and to the world. But we must realize that these things are part Of the role of characters we play in the material world. I think Sikhi is for everyone, whether that person has long hair wears a kara or wether they wear a turban or a hijab or has a completely shaven head etc. does not matter. And that is what we are taught I believe in the Japji Sahib. We are not our bodies or our minds, And only through this realization and seeing the oneness that ties all of us together can we truly connect. The tool is through Naam Simran… meditation because these are the tools that opened our eyes to see the reality. So I think we should understand that the five K are not necessary for our connection because if they were then what sikhi has to offer it would only be for those people. The purpose of the five keys I believe is for different purpose. But they’re not prerequisites to what we are taught in the japji sahib.

Guru Gobind Singh Ji didn't need them but he still accepted them as he believed considering himself different then others is a sin which can be a good karma only if it is commited by the divine himself... krishna Said that he makes maaya himself and doesnt breaks its rules even when he can as he is the jyot himself he has taken birth and will die by his choice as he made this rule himself he would implicate this on his human incarnition as well, what is wrong and what is right he has decided himself, the feelings of anger, stress, love and joy he controls them all at last only if the mayaavi or the divine wants only then we will Japa the naam... he tests us and when you reach reach shambhu avastha or buddha(bud=buddhi or intellect, dha= separated or above) when you get above your own intellect and become a yogi or what we say enlightened or gurmukkhi... here you are with the state of shambhu or shiva where you become bhola and bhola is not the one who is a fool but the one who knows everything that maaya knows but as he is above it he manages to understand maaya and use it in such a way that it benefits them without being a dharmic and hence they have the jyot lightening in their faces as they have complete control over maya but still if they come in ego and do something that challanges the mere existence of maaya ie; doing magic for personal wealth etc etc... they are captured by maaya of ego and they are stripped off the naam itself... it is the reason why guru tej bahadur ji offered his head when he was asked to show maayaavi shakti just for fulfilling his ego he didnt do it as he had no ego in him... but we all are still learningand we must learn until the day we die... waheguruji da khalsa waaheguruji di fateh, Jai Shree Krishna, jai Bholey...

Dead hairs come out automatically when you comb, but dead nails are not that easy so you cut them. See, when someone pulls your hairs, they are connected to the scalp. Scalp continues to provide hairs nourishments. There is pain and they are still living. we don't cut nails to that part where it hurts, you know what I mean.

keeping hair is completely insignificant (not important). I come from a sikh family. Born and raised in California, USA, I was excessively religious in my childhood. Due to the cultural norms, I kept long hair and an external look which was considered mandatory to be a sikh. All my family members were religious up to a point that I considered people from other religions inferior to myself. I was also expected to recite as much prayer as I could everyday, without the right to question my faith. When I was 12 I started taking part in a "gurbani kanth muquable" competition due to family pressure and got on first place for 4 years ( up until I stopped participating). As I became 16 years of age, I began to realize the importance of engaging with the society outside the religious circle. Through the people I met, my narrow minded views faded away. I became conscious of my surrounding and the role that society plays in my life. Discussions with my classmates made me feel the importance of engaging with people from different cultural backgrounds. Through these experiences, I realized that most of my friends were suppressed by their parents to follow a specific guideline. This was the first time I began to question the morality of parents forcing their beliefs on their children. As of now, I fall under the category of an atheist whose morality is derived from spirituality rather than religion. I convinced my parents to let me shave and get a haircut, although they still are religious (6 month process). Their agreement has strengthened our relationship as i began to realize how much they love me without taking into consideration the fact whether I am religious or not.

I have been taught about the so-called sacrifices of people who identified as sikhs, however, I realized that every religion has sacrificed something, so nothing is unique about this religion. What about cutting hair because it causes irritation? Can't the distraction of irritation detract from making a connection or union with waheguru, and in this case, it be preferable to shave? Also, in a sense, couldn't the non-cutting of the hair be largely a statement of identity to the world that one is a Sikh - and is this a type of manifestation of ego? I ask respectfully as an outsider new to the beautiful religion of Sikhism.

Hi Robert!! The point is, if your intention and will is to connect with the ONE.. anything (thought, physical distractions, self identification (EGO) of any sort) which is a hinderance should be removed. It's a complete surrender of yourself...when you attain that state nothing else will matter. When even a bit of your thought manuevers you to yourself, the essence is lost and you have to start again.. surrender again...and this needs practice. Simran (recital) is a form of that practice. The more you do the more the probability of union with ONE will increase. It is easier said or preached than done. It's a BIG question everyone should ask themselves with deep interogation... How can I achieve the ultimate peace, solace from this ongoing struggle of MIND (it's just an organ which deceives us to think we are what we are). So emptying the MIND will do the trick. And Simran is the way. Waheguru ji ka Khalsa waheguru ji ki Fateh!!!

guru sahib asked to keep hairs coz these are natural things and also might have some spiritual reason which i dnt know but facial hairs like mustaches and besrd to a girls isnt normal..if they comes that means ur bodu is actively producing some hormones in excess so i guess girls can cut head hairs must be kept coz they are natural🙏

Naam Simran is the remembrance of the Almighty Universal Creator - God. Naam Simran is basically a form of meditation, where you chant God’s name. For Sikhs, we chant ‘Vaheguru’ which is what we call God, but if you’re Christian, Muslim or any other religion, you can chant God’s name as how you call him, for example Allah, Yahweh…etc.
