The zoo has come a long way, transforming from a place of public entertainment, to the modern zoo, which many see as a centre for conservation. So why do we even need modern zoos? In this episode, David explores this very question.

So glad to hear this information, I get fed up of people moaning about zoos, but they are so geared around the animal now, they have loads of space, and it's a chance to get up close and learn about the amazing animals around the world!
@kevinclement1533
@kevinclement1533 5 жыл бұрын
The thing is, people who argue on how zoos and aquariums were evil towards animals might not be concerned about wild animals at all in the first place if they never heard, much less visit any zoo or aquarium. Zoos and aquariums help spreading awareness about the beauty of natural world.

Okay but there are a handful of species that are deprived of what they need, apex predators for example. Many of which exhibit stereotypic behavior representative of severe mental distress.

@@billyrayner7904 the thing is that people ten d to give animals human traits when they are very diffrent from us. if you see a lion in a zoo sleeping then you might think it is board but this is normal since lions sleep for 20 hours a day. in fact if you see a lion in a zoo pacing around then it is a sign that it is stressed.

They don't have LOADS of space at all! Think of yourself in a mansion with all that you need for YEARS. Would you stay? NO. Just like us, they deserve their freedom. Their habitat is the forest and it should stay that way. Besides, with the technological advancement today, zoos are pretty much useless.

This is a great video. Thank you. I want to use it for my First Certificate exam class for Spanish students, hoping they can use the points brought up in this video to write an essay with arguments for and against zoos. In the past I had always been against zoos as I hate to see caged animals and even today in most 'modern' zoos we see animals that display neurotic and atypical behaviour the result of boredom, a lack of mental and physical enrichment and lack of their own social structures. But this video does go some way towards making a better argument for having zoos (although ultimately, I'd rather know, not necessarily see, that an animal is happy and free in its natural environment). I'm afraid I would not enjoy a day at the zoo because I love animals and respect them, but I hear the arguments presented here. The subtitles are disappointingly bad. I have written exactly what the presenter says if anyone wants a copy, let me know.

Helen Keenan we would love you to use the video in class. We are getting around to making a video about the negatives of zoos; not only from a welfare point of view but from a conservation science angle as well. Ultimately we would love to see all animals in their natural habitat, but sometimes this is just impossible. There are big negatives to zoos as well and we will cover them soon. Thanks for watching! And thank you for making better subtitles!

Because if not we would have trophy hunters “sustainably use” every single endangered or critically-endangered animal on this planet, and more often than not the most endangered of all groups of animals, that we paradoxically don’t really care or think about, either, are the ones they don’t want as trophies. For example in South Africa where *legal, regulated* hunting has actually saved some of the species being targeted like lions and white rhinos (which, I’ll admit I hate with a passion, too, and I’ve often gotten into heated arguments with trophy hunting proponents on the Internet despite the fact that it helps support poor local people there, as well. None of us are perfect), however, penguins living in the southernmost parts of the country, as well as in Namibia, are still very much endangered and in decline, and guess what? Sport hunters don’t want them in their collections, even though, once again, *legal and well-regulated* hunting has saved the “Big Five” in South Africa, thus it’s sort of a slap-in-the-face to us at least interested in working in properly-accredited zoos and aquariums where we work with captive-bred birds in order to at least have a viable breeding population. Turtles and tortoises also aren’t usually targeted by the industry, either, and yet, statistically-speaking, *they’re the most endangered group of vertebrates on this planet, right next to primates* (which I’ll also get to in a minute), so many, many properly-accredited zoos and aquariums, along with the Turtle Survival Alliance and other conservancies, collaborate to breed more endangered turtle and tortoise species so that they can, eventually, be re-released into the wild, and the great apes, for example gorillas and orangutans, that sport hunters also don’t target simply because they share over 90% of our DNA with us, are also considered critically-endangered in the wild due to habitat loss and the unsustainable bushmeat trade. The Indianapolis Zoo’s International Orangutan Center, for example, helps fund research in the Leuser Ecosystem National Strategic Area in Sumatra: www.indianapoliszoo.com/exhibits/orangutan-center/orangutans/ Simply put they help species in decline trophy hunters don’t want.

U can't do that, if u only take the endangered people that used to hunt them will hunt the un endangered species and that species will go endangered too and u just take that only endangered and release the previous one, it will get hunted again and will go endangered again.. It's just keep looping.. That's why PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE

Did anyone came out of the zoo and really thought: "I got to save tigers (or any other animal)" and did more than spending a few bucks to WWF. Did anyone after a visiting zoo stopped consuming palm oil products to save rain forest and the endangered species that are living there? I guess not..
@FatManJackson
@FatManJackson 2 жыл бұрын
The big guys make the difference. Rich people's donations are what is needed, big companies' decisions to produce palm oil products are the cause. You can not go around asking a million people asking for a 100 dollars expecting it to work if only 100 people with a million dollars are needed. Greed is what makes rich people rich and poor people poor.
@JoshZnh

That's why they build zoos, people growing palm oil in the wild and threatens the animals there, so they built zoos..
@themotions5967
@themotions5967 Жыл бұрын
One factor of this manner isn’t going to typically change those types of behaviors. From my own experience people who stop using palm oil or other harmful products tend to do so because a variety of stacked reasons, and the proper messaging at modern zoos could play a part in that. I also think it’s important to note just how much these facilities can spark inspiration in children especially. A child might not be able to donate after a visit, but could grow up to be a conservationist that changes the game.

@tekkencentre
@tekkencentre 2 жыл бұрын
We do that with cats and dogs too. It does not, in and of itself, mean that an animal is unhappy or not properly cared for. Granted, there can definitely be such a thing as insufficient living space for an animal, but that is not a reason to shut down all zoos; rather, it is an argument for increasing the standards of the life of animals in captivity.
@themotions5967
@themotions5967 Жыл бұрын
That’s already a issue that’s been vastly addressed and taken care of in most modern facilities. Most animals at these facilities not only have habitats that are usually designed to be larger than what is needed, but often are intentionally designed to hide up to a half of the exhibit space from public view. Not to mention things like elevation changes, and hidout spots that give privacy as well. This didn’t to mention most animals also have multiple indoor spaces kitted out for them as well and many also have alternate outdoor spaces that are the same size as their publicly viewed habitat
