It is worth noting that a lot of the time hues are used to substitute expensive pigments for cheaper ones in order to save money You will very often find a cerulean hue or cobalt blue hue made out of phthalo blue/ultramarine and white in student grade lines because those pigments are cheaper

I knew that already , as I had previously read books on recipes for making paints, varnishes, pastels, etc" "Hue" means artificial, not genuine. For example, Cadmium Red Hue. "Lake" means glazing, always transparent. Glazing colours are used as the final layer. You smudge or rub the glazing paint over last dried layers of paint. For example, Crimson Lake.

Thank you so much! I always wondered what "hue" meant. I generally assumed it meant "cheap paint" but your swatches give really interesting results. 😊

The pigment numbers confuse me too much so I just go with color name but that sometimes means I get a muddy color when I don’t want one by mixing a cool with a warm. Good video and explanation as always.
@teohyc3 жыл бұрын
To avoid muddy mixes, look at the colour wheel and choose primary colours that are near each other. Handprint.com has a colour wheel with pigment codes

How did you know? How did you know I just wondered about the HUE thing yesterday while unpacking my W&N Cotman watercolors :o

It looks like Schmincke made a non toxic version of their Cobalt Cerulean, with Cerulean Hue, because in tone they looked very similar. That would be my guess as to why it appeared so dark compared to the others.

Hi Bro. I thoroughly enjoy ur advice. I'm slowly putting together a smallpalette of watercolor. Can't afford to buy all the colors at once. Old u guide me on the first 5 colors to buy?

I always thought it was mostly because of toxicity....btw, I would love to see your views on this someday. Are you going to make a video about WN cadmium free colors?
@teohyc3 жыл бұрын
Some pigments are phased out due to toxicity. Eg Manganese Blue. Some are phased out due to supply issues, eg PO49 WN Cadmium free colours are just mixed pigments. Same as DS “Cadmium” colours.

There are hues made up of two or more pigments and then there are convenience colours made up of two or more colours, such as Hooker's Green. So is Daniel Smith's New Gamboge really just a convenience orange?
@randalllaue40423 жыл бұрын
The color changed when Company moved to different country, different laws on toxicity...
@muskndusk Жыл бұрын
I would always buy the hue of any cadmium colour, from the assumption that it's made with non toxic ingredients.

May I ask what's the largest difference between mijello and schminke.
@JayNathanWatercolor3 жыл бұрын
For me the biggest difference is that Schmincke is much more active wet in wet. I think that's because Schmincke contains ox gall where as Mijello doesn't.

I’m assuming that all the pigments that start with a P is because they are pigments. As in PY150 would be Pigment Yellow 150. So why does the Rose Madder start with an N?
@ace_oneseven3 жыл бұрын
N is from natrual ,natural pigments are extracted from plant or animal material, e.g. B. indigo, chlorophyll and cochineal. Rose Madder NR 9 is a natural colour from the roots of the common madder plant called Rubia Tinctorum.

That dark Schminke Cerulean Blue is kinda weird, especially when it contains a white pigment :/
@jennw68093 жыл бұрын
A lot of companies do that, putting in white to simulate Cerulean, but it's not very satisfying as a substitute.
@natford82713 жыл бұрын
HOW does one pigment create different colours? My chemistry background is confused by that. Also you say the swatch labelled WIN is Schminke but I am guessing it is Winsor & Newton. 😉

?? I guess I need to watch again. Maybe I don't even know enough to understand.
@jennw68093 жыл бұрын
It may not make a lot of sense if you aren't familiar with pigment numbers and names. For instance, Cerulean Blue (the real stuff) is PB35. If a paint company makes a similar blue with a different pigment like PB 15 instead, they should call it Cerulean Blue Hue.
