@@theboombody Yes, and that’s a good motto for moral humility, and encouraging people not to judge others. No one likes the “holier than thou” types My Dad’s church actually had that message a while ago; they said ‘you don’t have to condemn what you don’t condone’ You can see someone make a decision that you feel is wrong, and choose differently, without judging the other person for their choice. I really like that. Regarding the scientific method, you literally can’t prove something to be true, you can only prove things wrong. This encourages an epistemological humility. We have to be open to the evidence and be willing to abandon idea that contradict reality. So it’s kind of a different context, but yeah, humility is good.

When superstitious Bronze Age primitives invented God, they gave him every day single human character flaw they had, because they simply projected their own uneducated thoughts onto their imaginary God. Men created God in their own religion I suppose that one reason I have always detested religion is its sly tendency to insinuate the idea that the universe is designed with 'you' in mind or, even worse, that there is a divine plan into which one fits whether one knows it or not. This kind of modesty is too arrogant for me. Life is but a momentary glimpse of the wonder of this astonishing universe, and it is sad to see so many dreaming it away on spiritual fantasy. You can't convince a believer of anything; for their belief is not based on evidence, it's based on a deep seated need to believe It is far better to grasp the universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring. We seldom realize, for example that our most private thoughts and emotions are not actually our own. For we think in terms of languages and images which we did not invent, but which were given to us by our society. Morality does not come to this mortal world from some imaginary paradise. It rises from the neurons of mortal humans. Morality seems to me to be a natural phenomenon-constrained by the forces of natural selection, rooted in neurobiology, shaped by the local ecology, and modified by cultural developments. Many believers are usually incapable of understanding our position and not willing to do the research that refutes their beliefs make evolution seem that much more reasonable. A primitive mindset unwilling to see or understand opposing views; believe with their emotions and feelings. That’s why majority of intellectual people who have truly evolved from primitive thinking mindsets don’t believe in gods.

Videos like Brandon's helped me deconstruct a lot of the lingering harmful concepts from my old religious beliefs despite leaving religion by ~10 years old. Some were harmful towards my mental health, and some were harmful to others. Even at 16 after surviving assault, purity culture haunted me long after losing belief in the religion that spawned the culture. Not a day in therapy could help until I could detach from the painful, irrational, bullshit concept of "virginity" and "sexual purity". Progressive skeptics opened that door for me when no one else did. I still watch skeptical videos and research world religions today because 1) my friends and family have different relationships with and perspectives of religion, and I wish to understand their point of view better, and 2) I live in Texas and have seen my rights stripped from me in rapid succession from the most fundamental of religious zealots that have seized a powerful minority. They're close to harming one of the most important pillars of society: education. I need to learn everything about them, ethics, and reason to be the best informed voter that I can be to speak against their harmful, bigoted politics.

Believe me, if you can act more loving than them, oh boy, it’ll stick with them far longer than name calling. And if they are nice in return, you can have a pleasant exchange, where both parties can listen and learn from each other. I know that I am saved and have a relationship with God beyond all doubt and all true born again Christians also know beyond all doubt that they are saved and have a relationship with God. Think about this... How can a true born again Christian ever deny the existence of God when they have God's Holy Spirit dwelling within them? True born again Christians wake up every day with the very evidence of God dwelling within them, a true born again Christian can't deny the existence of God even if they tried because such a thing is impossible because you can't deny the existence of something that is dwelling within you. It is NOT logically possible to be able to deny the existence of God if you are a true born again Christian.

It's worse than not being able to *deny* the existence of God, is not being, willing or able to *question* it; not even tentatively. You say you KNOW beyond all doubt. But that's not impressive, because your capacity to doubt is crippled by an ideology that demands you to believe, promises eternal paradise and/or threatens your eternal suffering. A sick little game of Mafia style emotional blackmail and extortion. The underlying premise that you can wilfully choose to believe something is absurd to a rational mind. The ideology is obviously sold on fear, greed and doxastic volunteerism, regardless of your claim to have some magic spook stuck inside you. Go see a doctor preferably a psychiatrist. The reason you believe what you do is because you've been indoctrinated into believing a delusional ideology. Many other religions indoctrinate their followers to believe their doctrines with just as much dogmatic certainty as you do. Besides all that, I don't know why you expect your testimony to be convincing. It doesn't prove a damn thing. Sorry but the phrase "cult of human invented fiction" seems to be contrary to "All human existence is beautiful. " Religion is part of human existence whether you like or not. Is it possible that atheism is nothing more than the rationalization of one's emotional reaction to their perception of religion?
@kharma4ever730 Жыл бұрын
@@logicalmuslim1590first you must understand the definition of fiction. 1. literature in the form of prose that describes imaginary events and people. 2. something that is invented or untrue. So a human invented untrue imaginary event as religion dictates in a deity would be the human invented fiction or cult of religion. Making human existence beautiful. Unlike the human invented fiction or cult of religion dictates. The fact that one may choose to believe a human invented fiction does not make it true for anyone outside of their own existence. I’m not or ever claimed to be a atheist. Those are your words. I am a human being, a beautiful human being.

The need for life to have some kind of meaning is a big one. When I first lost my faith I struggled to grapple with the fact that there is no ultimate purpose. I wonder if it's easier for people who weren't raised religious and take the arbitrary nature of the universe for granted.

I definitely think that not being sold on something more grand helped me with the realization of how reality is. There's no letdown of expectations, no cognitive dissonance from trying to make things fit. Besides, the idea of being given a purpose sounds way worse than choosing my own. What if I was given one I don't like or I'm bad at? I'd rather choose something that matters to me. I might have anxiety about choosing it, but I would also have anxiety about fulfilling my assigned purpose - especially with God's impossible standards.

Even as a lifelong atheist I've asked why some atheists feel the need to make what we do not believe, the center of their lives. Not in a comment, but just to myself. I came to the conclusion eventually, that this type of content is important for those who have been indoctrinated their entire lives into a theistic worldview and are now grappling with those concepts, while also dealing with the people around them that are not happy with them de-converting. It's also important for those who may not even necessarily be grappling with it, but genuinely want to know where (some) atheists are coming from. What had me had me a little antagonistic about this type of content at first, was I felt like you content creators were speaking for all atheists on matters not directly related to simply not believing in gods. However, I've softened from that position, realizing my perception was not accurate and from the positive impact it has had helping those described above. The comments from those benefitting from this type of content really made me realize that any minor misrepresentation of my worldview someone might glean from one of these videos pales in comparison to the support it provides.

Religion is divisive and prejudicial which ultimately leads to violence."* Again, no, and this point specifically is rejected by those who study the sociology of religion, as exemplified in "Empirical Perspectives on Religion and Violence": _"There appears very little support for the notion that there is something uniquely religious that causes violence among followers."_

For myself, as someone who never believed in a god and was, at some point in my childhood, shocked that people actually believed this, instead of just sort of believing it, my reasons for wanting to talk about religion are slightly different. People keep telling me that there is a good an just being out there that wants to have a relationship with me and that it will reward me if I am open to that. Now, I am open to hearing from any being that wants to have a relationship with me, but it will need to be that being itself, and not just through intermediaries. The fact that I am as sincere in this as I know how to be, yet this entity, despite promises its believers make, doesn't get in touch with me means that it either doesn't (yet) want this relationship (in which case its believers don't understand it), my mind work in such a way that I am incapable of hearing this entity (yet that still locks me out of the reward which would mean that the entity isn't just), or the entity doesn't exist. In all of those situations, its believers are wrong about at least one aspect of it. I care for the truth and I want to help other people who care for what is true get to the bottom of these issues that are, according to them, vital to whatever this soul thing might be. I am fortunate enough to be surrounded by modern and moderate believers, who don't claim that I'm not being sincere. This seems to shake at least a small part of their believes every single time. Of course they can come later convince themselves that there has to be a reason for this, but the fact that they don't know an off the cuff answer to this position strengthens my believe that the entity they believe in doesn't actually exist.

I don't understand the Christian feel the need to legislate their beliefs. In fact it seems ryey should want the opposite - no one gets to judge but God. He laid out his rules and you can follow them or not, and he'll deal with it after you die. But instead we get a plethora of laws trying to keep other people from breaking those rules. I've said this before: you can't legislate someone into heaven.
@michaelsbeverly Жыл бұрын
I understand them completely on this issue, they are no different from most atheists who tend to be left leaning and tend to want to force their beliefs on everyone else as well. The Christians want to legislate their beliefs because they believe it'll make the world better, just like non-believers who vote and try to legislate their beliefs do. Which is why I'm a non-voting anarchist. My opinion and belief is that if something is good for me, you shouldn't have to force me to comply with a gun to my head.
@zar3434 Жыл бұрын
@@michaelsbeverly The difference though, between atheist (or closer to correct, secular humanist) and Christians is that the atheist is generally trying to legislate maximal freedom and good, irrespective of beliefs. They want abortions to be legal, but they're not forcing anyone to get them. They want any two people to be able to marry, but they're not forcing anyone to marry a person of their non-preferred sex. There's a world of difference. You say you don't vote, and you're free to do that, until someone takes that right away from you because you didn't vote against them. Always remember one day your rights could be on the line too.

Why does everyone talk about God as though He is a he. If I am created in HIS image...how does that work if I'm a girl? If God is real...what is "his" pronoun? Why haven't christians...in all this time...figured that out?

I agree with you, but this god is clearly built from a male dominated society. His pronouns through every book are He and theirs descriptions of his “very large” penis also lol. Ive never understood why women would want to follow a god that obviously thinks so little of them

I guess as an atheist you don't believe in god, so you're not going around inventing new ones or improving the ones that already 'exist'. The christian, jewish and muslim god is clearly defined as a man... it does help with the idea of how weird it is that in the 'real world' women are actually the carriers of the new life, and that's more than just 'doing the work', women also give the majority of the DNA to the newborn... men have a weaker genetic configuration...

@@MindShift-Brandon my mother was catholic, I always found it weird how she would feel adoration for the pope, I admit John-Paul II was a rather fit guy, but still... and the fact that I have two sisters, which would not be allowed to become priests, neither would she herself be welcome as priest in her own church... interesting how she never questioned that, and she wasn't an exception, you would see many older women in church.

@@marcdc6809 well...how depressing...but...to fill out your inference about how I'm currently thinking as an atheist...or maybe a wannabe atheist...I do not believe there is a true gender defined deity anywhere...but when I was a christian...I wondered about that question in all seriousness. After all... who defined God as a man? Why...some man..of course.

@@MindShift-Brandon I wondered that too when I would go to Bible studies...but women seem to lap it up...go figure.

Love your approach to this subject. Also congratulations, you have managed to draw some of the major KZbin theist trolls to your videos to drive up engagement! 😂

I found your channel recently and have been really enjoying your videos and basically attempting to binge (most of) your older stuff in the playlists. But, I have to, as someone who wants to be a professional screenwriter, I HATE being put under limitations in storytelling. It can be rewarding to try to tell a story in an expansive universe and find a creative way to connect two things that nobody else would have ever thought about being connected, but it's also taxing. And I'd very much prefert to just come up with an idea that not many have seen before or a creative way to do something that has been done before, rather than find a creative way to tell a story in a world where so many other stories have been told. Because it doesn't feel limiting, really, it feels restricting. Constraining. It feels in order to tell the story I want to tell, I have to sacrifice elements of it in order to make it work and fit within the established canon of that universe. Of course, the issue is less and less severe the less content a given franchise has, but still. As much as I would love to tell stories in so MANY franchises I love, I would feel more free and creative if I created a franchise of my own. Or just an IP. It can only be a franchise if it's successful. Edit: I also acknowledge that not all artists, and maybe not even all writers will think the same as me. But I just wanted to give my perspective on it.
