Why Does A DPF Filter Get Blocked? Most Common Causes

As a former Ford tech I can honestly say that if it's a 2.0 or 2.2 duratorq diesel between 2006 and 2013 or so. It would nearly always be Either DPF pressure/soot load sensor or the pipes leading to it. The amount of customers I had getting ripped off by other garages quoting new DPF's is sickening. I recommend keeping a DPF pressure sensor that works handy as a spare to check the condition of the existing sensor without wasting too much time on diag. If the sensor is at fault then you'll get a different reading of voltage or on the laptop, a soot load percentage. Some sensors (2.0) mainly on the Kuga have rubber pressure pipes from the DPF to the sensor. _ALWAYS_ check these with a pressure/vacuum testing tool. Look for splits/cracks in the pipe as this will give incorrect pressure readings and trick the ECU into thinking the DPF isn't blocked. Equally if soot gets clogged in the pipe it will constantly think it's got a blocked DPF and will repeatedly fault even after a £1000 DPF replacement job has been done. Hope this helps anyone with these issues. I am a *Former* Ford qualified tech so new issues may have arisen with these cars in the past 3 years that I don't know about so always consult a current tech before selling out to Ed in a shed.

I'd like to add to that list, regen halted because of oil dilution or oil level too high. Most diesels i see have oil level sensors and oil dilution calculations on board. If they get too high, no more regens. After service, they need to be reset to allow regens.

I had a Mazda 2.2 diesel SKYACTIV, that when wrong from new with only 7000 miles on the clock, blocked DPF, turns out it needed new injectors at a cost of thousands, all done under warranty, now I have a petrol that's like a diesel, new SKYACTIV X works on compression ignition but it's a petrol, very clever engine !

I'm pretty sure oil dilution is mainly cause by worn piston rings which can be caused by not changing engine oil soon enough ( a lot of newer cars just have cheep shit piston rings that cause blow by , blow by is when oil or fuel gets by the piston rings ) keeping the right spec oil in your car it dose matter especially if your car has a turbo and the Dpf will do it's job better because of the oil additives or lack of which matter as well , keep your oil topped up but never over fill or oil gets in place's it should not be or at least to much oil can be pushed in to the cylinders and then ends up in the exhaust system and clogs up the Dpf sooner .

​@@paulgilraine3127Fuel injectors need to be right, could be poor spray pattern, could be leaking, blocked and dribbling etc, unburned fuel can get by. In a petrol maybe there's no spark and we're just washing the cylinder walls.

To me it looks like someone hates diesel engines, and to make them unpopular, they claim NOX is a monster released to the air we breath in by the evil diesel engines - they are so mean! Just because someone claims NOX is a problem, how can we know? I recently learned that all we have been told about the dangers of Cholesterol has been incorrect or irrelevant. It turned out that Cholesterol isn't any problem at all. RE: does rain wash NOX out I don't know! But the concentration in the air isn't increasing and accumulating, is it? If not, there is something that picks up NOX somewhere. Maybe by a chemical reaction? How much NOX has been released to the air the last billion years, and how much is left? Where did it go?

Alright mate I bought some of the launch UK dpf cleaner & flow restorer... Just read the label and it says compatible with all diesel engines without on board additive dosing system system... Mine is a vw crafter 2016 with add blue... Is this no good for my engine?

I have a Volvo c30. I have just had my alternator replaced. About 2 days later I have had a dpf blocked fault.i called the AA out. They couldn't clear the fault. However he said there was no blockage and everything was fine. I drove it home and it seemed fine. The next day it was back in limp mode. Any help would be appreciated.

Mine regens all the damn time. Every 6 miles on the Mway the glow plugs come on, it heats up to 600 degrees, the pressure drops a little and then repeat. The pressure is at 1 to 3 at idle and can go to 14kpa at 3 to 4 thousand revs. Very frustrating and a waste of fuel.

Its a flawed technology and drivers have very little if no understanding of this , time to say goodbye to diesels on anything other than trucks or tractors.

We’ve had 3 DPF equipped vehicles in our house ( between the 3 my wife and I have probably clocked up between 150-175000 miles. We’ve never once had a DPF light on. We live in the country up in the hills. The issues with DPFs are mostly driver behaviour by people who don’t understand how a particulate filter works & how to maintain it.

@@Mith29 If you predominantly do short journeys then yeah get a Petrol car, but if you do long journeys or a mix of both, diesels usually work out quite a bit cheaper over a few years.
