I've noticed that most musical theater fans dislike La La Land, while people who usually hate movie musicals love La La Land. I wonder what the reason for this dissonance is.
@AUMOTmusic Жыл бұрын
Biggest issue in my opinion is that this movie is trying to work in the musical theatre/musical movie idiom without actually doing a great job at a lot of the key elements: the dancing is mediocre, the singing is often not great, the lyrics are Pasek & Paul's usual garbage, and the music is trying to force modern pop harmony into Great American Songbook stylings. The filmmaking is very good and the leads' acting performances are superlatives, but all those weaknesses pile up and are more obvious to musical fans
@deletedwaffles Жыл бұрын
This. I love musicals but I'm kind of indifferent about this movie. I didn't hate it but I didn't love it either but my friend who HATES musicals loved this movie. For a month straight after they saw this movie I had to endure them playing the soundtrack in their car every time we drove to places.

I will preface by saying I’ve actually never seen this movie in full ever. But I would say that in some ways instead of a musical it feels like a movie with music. Like the way old Disney movies weren’t musicals but instead had 1 or 2 songs and that was it (and yes I understand there are more than that in this movie). But it still does just feel like a movie with music rather than a musical. Personally as a musical fan I just had no interest in seeing this music so I have no harsh feelings toward it
@Tannerj50 Жыл бұрын
@@AUMOTmusic as much as i'm kind of an outlier because i'm not a theater kid(heavy metal guitar,versatile bass player)city of stars is really the only part of it that works,and it works amazingly but unfortunately its constantly shoved down our throats for most of the movie when it really should have just been at the end. the full ending version still makes me cry, but if the rest of the movie had the quality of that last 10 minutes it would have been much better.
@PileOfStones Жыл бұрын
I think it's mostly that La La Land lovingly satirizes the old style of musical like Singing in the Rain and kind of winks at the camera to be like "oh see that's the point is that modern life is so more embedded in shades of grey so they don't get their happy ending and the singing and dancing is this 90% quality, Ryan Gosling isn't supposed to be a knock you over with how good he is at singing!" and that's awesome I really like it but actual live theater has evolved past that and made fun of it or subverted that anyway... so it's nothing new but if you have a special fondness of what La La land subverts it's even more polarizing.

i felt like i was the only one who wasn't feeling this movie when it came out. and it's weird because i usually enjoy a good movie musical, but my cousin who despises musicals loved it to death and went to see it a couple of times. it made me feel empty and dissatisfied just like the greatest showman did and the whole time i was questioning the hype behind it (i was today years old when i realised the same duo is responsible for both of these which explains my frustrations perfectly). it still has a couple of banger songs and a great performance from both leads.

I don't like this movie much either and I think it's because it's one of the best examples of, if you like this movie, watch THIS movie instead. Like everything its paying homage to, I can just go and watch the better version instead. In ten years (tbh even now) I don't see anyone pointing to La La Land as one of best 2000s musicals. There's something about WSS, Singing in the Rain, An American in Paris that this movie just does not have. It feels like the entire runtime is convincing you it has IT and it just doesn't. It's devoid of spark but at least Ryan Gosling was cool

Although La La Land is my favorite movie of all time, I can agree in the respect that Whiplash being an almost complete 180 from this can put people off. It’s kind of interesting being that Whiplash was made in order to actually fund La La Land even though they are both such incredible stand-alone films. Love the commentary as always, much love and support SAG!
@XekTOr89 Жыл бұрын
This is why it's so weird that people follow everything a director does, as if everything he does has to be similar in a way. I loved Whiplash and La la land and they are my favourite movies of his, doesn't mean I'd like everything he ever makes or that everything he makes has to be in the same vein as his earlier work.

Yeup and that's why I really enjoy it. It has a different vibe that sets apart from many musicals and is simultaneously a love-letter to Los Angeles, a city that for all its drawbacks is near and dear to me. Also it came out at a time when I was having similar feelings about a previous breakup, so the timing was perfect in that regard.

@@XekTOr89 Yeah, I get what you mean. It can be very rewarding, though, sometimes. Like with Nolan and his use of black and white in Memento and bringing that back for Oppenheimer, that was very cool to see. But it’s also really great to see versatility in directors as well!

I wasn't that big of a fan of LA LA LAND either, mostly because I thought the movie was too scared to go all the way with a happy ending and shoved the bittersweet ending in out of a weak attempt to be 'artsy'. It felt so bizarre for a movie that was fully embracing itself as a jazz musical to suddenly chicken out of the perfect Hollywood ending.

John Legend's character made the most sense out of everyone in this movie. Jazz, like everything else, has to evolve, and we must change with it. Yet, Sebastian joining Keith's band makes it seem like he's selling out.

Yeah that part bothered me. He made total sense. And the music they played wasnt even that bad. I was actually very impressed by that one piece they played when Mia was in the audience
@lukeferraro01 Жыл бұрын
Sebastian was selling out because he personally hated what he was making and thought it was bastardizing the art he loved. John Legend makes a good point but Seb fundamentally disagrees with the direction and therefore only does it for the money hence he’s selling out

That’s how Sebastian views it, but the movie does not portray it as an objective sell out

Personally speaking as a filmmaker and musical theatre lover, I felt the same way as Eric when I saw this film. La La Land is phenomenal on a technical level, the cinematography, direction, and performances are great. But I never really cared for the music, the song sequences, and the story for that matter. Unpopular Opinion, I think Steven Spielberg's adaptation of West Side Story was infinitely better than La La Land. It felt like an old school music with a few modern updates, but stayed authentic to the genre it wanted to be. While still being a technical marvel with its direction, cinematography, production design, and song compositions. I think the issue for me is that La La Land is a film that tries to emulate elements from older musical films, but the music and modernized setting just doesn't catch my interest. People like to shit on The Greatest Showman, but I'll always prefer to listen to "This is Me" over "City of Stars."

it took me a couple of rewatches to like the film as a movie lover tbh because my biggest take away from it is how much of a call back it was to old hollywood and the city of dreams. films used to be very casual, romantic and had a hint of immortality that everyone wanted to reach. and yet this one hit you with a more modern mix of tragic reality where no one really gets their happy ending together but apart because of how hard the industry can actually be. as much as i wanted this film to end with them together, the bittersweet aspect made it linger on my mind. really visually pretty and fun but the whole ‘THATS LIFE’ made me upset cause come on i use movies to escape reality not get hit with it again😭

Like cinematography was absolutely beautiful and I enjoyed some of the choreography, costumes and a couple of the songs but the rest?
