I truly appreciate the title of this debate. Western journalists would never frame a question like this. It is very specific, direct and unambiguous as it is clear as day that France has a clear hatred of Muslims and Islam.

The West hates politics combine with religious dogmas That's the reason why we as westeners hate the political Islam. Not Islam. The Islam that motivaties the reason why you do not have to respect the constitution or other laws of the country. That political religious obsession is very damaging for the person and the society when there are too many of them. I met a lot of muslims that are very nice. Even docile. Once in a group they behave differently, like wolves depending of the size of the group. "Together we are strong." In western societies that value and respect creativity, individuality and individual responsebility , the national laws are the binding factor. If you put your religious laws, or the law of the streeft above that of the western country you live in, you become an outlaw for obvious reason.

Frensh Laicité constitution and individuality, personal responsebility are not things that come naturaly to people comming from muslim cultures.with group thinking, strong leadership and religion that dominates the public. for these people it takes quite a a lot of intellectual gymnastics to overcome the gap. The people who find the right match do have opportunities and succes. That opendoor policy of France has led to great numbers of rural people, with a fatalistic archaic religious mentality. That's the root of the problem. The parents were not able to give the kids the right tools to find their way in society. Some succeded more ore less, some very well. but a problamatic big group didn't. The quantity of these, what I Call, deplorables was too big to handle. I don't have to tell you with what consequences. Maybe you know better than me. The Total picture doesn't look good. . That leads to prejudices. Add to all that the way Islam people act on world stage, than the picture becomes very grim. You can't deny, everywhere where muslims are a majority there is fight among eachother. Everywhre in the world where muslims have to share the soil with non muslims there are big problems. Look how oilstates use their money to fuel anger, to promote the superiority of Islam to their muslimbrothers. Churches put into fire on a regualar base. Africa, Asia. One koranburning and the whole Islam worldcommunity in a brutal, furious anger. Ofcourse they have their own reasons but it's theirs. But Come on. It comes to the way you are raised.. Is it strange that the Frensh or Europeen reflex when it comes to the word Islam, or Arab, is not a positive one. The good Islam people, also a lot of them, are the victim of it.for sure. Nahel's death was an accident. The camera footages show him driving on side walks and against traffic, threatening the life of pedestrians and bikers, before even being chase by the police. Also he was driving a stolen car, under age for a driving license. When the police finally stopped him, he refused to get out of the car. This was a tragic accident but not motivated by religion.

It's the side effect of colonialism. Humans generally, when told that there is something better out there, would want to get that something better. When you combine that with a mindset that the former colonial power could be solution to your daily problems, then you would want to settle there. It is easier to do it because those colonial powers to claim the mantra of equality and fraternity, and also brought their colonial language and imposed upon the occupied lands. So logically it makes sense since the language barrier is also removed. But only after you migrate and settle, you realize the equality is only for the natives, and just because you know the language does not mean you can run away from your other attributes like lineage and skin colour. The best way to think about this is to look that Muslims do not settle in Japan, even though that is also developed society. They view Japan with respect and do not have a desire to move there at same time, due to absence of Japanese colonialism in Muslim world.

I'm a Muslim from France and I agree. The image you reflect is so important in France. That's why you have to put your photo on you CV in France while in the UK and other countries it's not needed. Being an introvert that speaks softly and that grew up in a richer neighbourhood, I spoke and behaved more soflty than many other Muslims that grew up in poorer area, so I was most of the time treated well by French people. Even racist French used to tell me, "you are different from others" to justify their racism 🙄.

This was an informative interview. I recently immigrated to France and I can attest that French people as a whole are very nice and friendly. But of course they don’t know the issues Muslims face because it does not affect them. It’s such a big headache for me to find work because I’m afraid that they’ll tell me to remove my hijab.

Thank you for this solid episode as always! As a Muslim who was born and raised in France and left the country 8 years ago, it pains me every time I look at our situation in France. I'm usually very optimistic about the future of Muslims in the world, but I can't help but become pessimistic when it comes to the future of Muslims in France. I'm afraid that in a few generations, many Muslims in France will no longer be Muslims, or will be Muslim in name only, as you can see in the former Soviet countries. Mainly because of the extreme pressure from the government, the apathy or hostility of the rest of French society and the complacency of many French Muslims (and how disconnected they are from the rest of the Ummah). Leaving France was the best decision of my life and I'm trying to convince my family, especially the younger ones, to make plans to leave France. Some friendly advice from someone who has been a big fan of this podcast for a while: I hope you can include more diverse voices from France if you plan to address this issue in a future episode. One example would be Marwan Muhammad, who is fluent in English and has a long history of activism against Islamophobia in France. I'm not in any way questioning the legitimacy of the guest, but I do feel that people outside of France very rarely get a good understanding of what's going on in France, and each time we are only scratching the surface. So giving a platform to a limited number of voices from France is not doing due diligence. I strongly believe that giving access to a diversity of voices in every community within the Ummah will only enable a more connected Ummah.

Good video on the topic however, there are plenty of French, Muslim, English speaking academics who are specialised on this matter such as Dr. Ibrahim Bechrouri (political scientist), Dr. Hanane Karimi (Sociologist), Dr. Fatima Khemilat (sociologist), Dr. Marwan Mohammed (Sociologist). I wish English speaking Muslim KZbinrs did more research before inviting guests so they can give platform to brilliant people in the ummah who are specialised in their local context and dedicate their lives on the matter - but sadly constantly ignored by their own communities because it's not "trendy" or fashionable to be a Muslim academic. Dr Marwan Mohammed for example, has been studying Islamophobia in France for almost 2 decades, written the book "Islamophobia in France: The Construction of the Muslim Problem" and is specialised in urban phenomenon such as the one happening right now. I'm just sad no Muslim Anglophone channel thought of interviewing him - but that's not really surprising anymore. I understand people stick to their own networks rather than seeking people out there (I'm completely in support of CAGE, and since they're UK based, it makes sense for a UK channel to go ask CAGE) - but I believe we can do better.

I can't believe some of the discussion here. The French law is neutral in the same way that the law in UAE or Libya or anywhere is equal. In Saudi Arabia, non-Muslims are forbidden from drinking alcohol. Thats not because they are racist, or because they are trying to be unequal.. its because their values are very much anti-alcohol. When it comes to things like wearing the Niqab, that behaviour goes very much against the values of France, in the same way alcohol is in the Middle East. In fact, you are more than free to wear a hijab or niqab in the privacy of your own home, which is more than can be said for drinking alcohol in Saudi Arabia.

You can buy land in a country without being a citizen and move to whatever country as long as you have your passport and satisfy the civic criteria. Your movements to another country will be dictated by interests (work, business, studies, better fiscality, welfare etc.) So it is crucial to understand that while we enjoy the comfort we have nowadays with internet, information available in clicks, and world trade which allows us to enjoy various diets, we have to accept the bad perks of globalization: having to live with different people you may not like, and having to deal with feeling lile a minority all the time.

Your argument would be correct if we do not consider the history of colonialism. You asked if a muslim does not like the condition and the way of life of the west. Then why dont they just leave. My counter-question, where to? But what I have learned here, it is crazy, you cannot be a Muslim in France! If I can’t pray or fast then I am out of there! I assure you that France is not a racist country. I am also from north Africa and never had any problem because I don't wear sportwear to go to a job interview, my french is impeccable, it is a much less racist society than the US are at their core or even arabic countries against ppl of color or jews. You can check the video. He was driving without a license, exceeding the speed limit, putting the lives of 3 people at risk; and when the two police officers stop him (it should be noted that one was on the car) he tries to flee and they shoot him. Good interview. I would've liked more on the political options available for Muslims in France that began towards the very end. Granted that all current parties are more or less islamophobic - what prevents Muslims from forming their own party to cater to a substantial voting population of 6 million or so? In the European context where many parties can make it to parliament unlike the first past the post system in Westminster style governments - there is room for a dissident party that represents minority interests. Whether its a few seats or a hundred - simply having that visible minority in parliament challenges the state narrative. But I get the sense that Muslims in France are very apathetic and are woken up out of their lethargy when clear atrocities like Nael happen.

You assume that the killing is intentional. I do not. The work of the police is not an easy one, and under certain circumstances, mistakes could be made in which lives are lost. Don’t tell me this is impossible. If you can prove that the killing is intentional, show the proof. In any case, a trigger-happy cop would have found much better ways to massacre innocent victims rather than doing so in the open, in broad daylight, with a partner possibly contradicting his testimony.

I just saw the video with sound. I agree that the officer opened fire once the car started moving again. To prove murder, it must be proved that there was an intention to kill. Nobody can see into the hearts of men, except God, so it’s unlikely that murder can be proved. That must be why he was charged with manslaughter instead. It’s reported that he was driving dangerously prior to this (e.g. running red lights, swerving towards a police officer). In this context, a case can be made that the shooter opened fire to prevent loss of life to civilians. The shooter’s partner tried to get the boy to stop the car engine by talking to him and punching him. Shortly afterwards, the car accelerated and the shooting happened. I can see that the police gave him enough chances to surrender, but he did not comply. There’s no footage of the events prior to this, but if the reports are true, the boy put innocent lives in danger and he had to be stopped. Is it the wisest option to shoot him? Maybe not. But if the shooter considered that his continued driving may cause accidents later on, he may think that shooting the boy is the only way. And he may be right.
