I'm a Saab guy, so take this with a grain of salt. 1. Try to run it with the MAF unplugged. 2. Check the throttle body, perhaps loose/leaking butterfly. 3. Might be coolant temp sensor whacking out the computer... My $.02 Love the channel Mike.

Mike, not sure if your Volvo is equipped with one, but maybe a throttle position sensor? Seems your trans works fine if the engine is working properly. If it has the sensor, I’m sure there’s a DIY procedure to reset it. Good luck. Always enjoy your videos.

I'd check all of the hose clamps for tightness. When it makes turbo boost, it could be blowing the metered air out of the hoses and then the mixture would be too rich to run properly. Also check the distributor cap, rotor, plugs and wires.

Remove or keep in place the coolant temperature sensor. Then do an ohms and voltage checks with a multimeter. Check the table/chart etc to see if the sensor is operating within the specified ranges, if not remove and replace.

Hi Mike, love the content as always. I am by no means an expert but it’s only surging when it’s under load would make me think it’s something electronic. Do you think possibly one of the ecu is causing the problem? Either way if anyone can fix it you can. Look forward to more brilliant videos

Collapsed cat converter? We had a ford mondeo where it used to bog down to idle if you floored it hard. The cat had collapsed and the innards were loose, under hard acceleration the internals would push back onto the exhaust exit. I also wouldnt do too much more headscratching until that other big pipe with the tie wrap is replaced

hey mike i think i can help you out, i am a mechanic. i have a few cheap ideas you can try. first and foremost, what people say about those 850 Turbos is very true, they are awesome cars and very easy to work on and modify them for alot more power. they are also pretty rare now, especially the 850 Turbo, i have a 1996 850R and i absolutely love it. I would HIGHLY reccomend that before you do anything else i would get some techron fuel treatment which will clean the injectors out really well and only add it to a quarter tank of gas that way it is twice as strong, and then i would do a seafoam treatment becuase i think a big part of your issue is that the valves and intake system probably has never been cleaned, those engines are amazing they dont build up a ton of carbon but any engine will build some up if it is not taken care of. if that doesnt help your issue then i would change the spark plugs to iridiums and also check how strong the coil for the spark plugs is, if that doesnt help then i would do the fuel filter as that has probaly never been changed either and possibly the fuel pump because it may be weak or wearing out, just please do not get rid of or give up on that car! trust me you will never let that thing go once you get it driving good, its a fast little car that has the perfect mixture of stiffness and softness to absorb the bumps. my very first car was a 1997 850 base model naturally aspirated and i got bored of it and stupidly sold it for $1300 with only 128k on it! ever since i sold it i have regretted selling it lol and now i finally found myself a nice 850R and it is awesome, especially at car shows everyone loves it. keep me updated on the repairs, send me a message if you want and we can exchance contact information and ill help you out!

I doubt electrical. Fuel mixture problems. Put a vacuum/boost gauge on it. It could be leaking anywhere, then check fuel pressure while operating. I suspect a pressure regulator that is being told to drop the pressure based on input that is not sustained....It thinks there is no boost when there is and it is cutting fuel when it needs more. Turbo's are very leak sensitive. Is there a TPS??? For sure test the TPS.

Hey Mike! The issue you are having with the Volvo, appears to be a defective throttle body. I hope this helps. God bless!

I’m not a Volvo tech but the bucking under load could be a misfire. Even though it hasn’t thrown a check engine light or code for it I’d check plugs, coils or for a bad spark plug wire. The high RPM at idle could be a sticky (IAC) idle air control.

Have you done the mass cleaning? MAF sensor, throttle body etc? Another issue might be dirty injectors and/or fuel rail. Have you done the fuel filter(s)? If the latter is in order, be sure to blow out the fuel lines in case there is rust buildup or a collapsing hose.

Do you have a smoke machine you can hook up and see where all of your leaks are? I'm guessing you need to fix one problem at a time otherwise your going to be chasing your tail. Once you have all of your vacuum leaks fixed you might find that something that is controlled by vacuum is your actual issue. ✌
