I noticed this too! Recently my feed has been really misogynistic and alt-righty… even though I always click the not interested button. Recently, I’ve been getting a lot of videos of this judge who really likes to stick it to women and call them gold diggers and stuff in custody court. Weird.

The type of "rule following" Jarvis is talking about is a good example of having a strong sense of "horizontal morality". Horizontal morality is a logic/empathy approach to deciding what's "right" versus "vertical morality" which is more like, "this is right because it's the law"

I tried this purely as an experiment, and got what I wanted - no more vile manosphere filth. I'll confess, though, that I may have got a bit indoctrinated in the process.. because I feel like I'm starting to see a clear picture of who's really behind this mess. I’m so glad Alanah brought up the comments cause it has been SO BAD. I ended up deactivating my tiktok about a year ago because I started getting slightly popular in the space I was in and it was terrifying when a video would go outside my bubble. That and I had a coworker find my tiktok and publicly shame me at work for talking in a video about taking a pole dancing class. And in that video I didn’t even show myself in the class it was just me in regular clothes at home being excited about trying something new. I want to be creative and talk about things I love but being afab on the internet is honestly so scary to me now and I can’t handle how mean people can be sometimes

@@woody_you_want i feel like you are overestimating the influence social distancing had. Most people didn’t really even adhere to guidelines for more than a year anyways. I think it’s more likely caused by more people online in general due to covid, and tiktok having very lax guidelines towards censorship or threats. You’re also assuming that toxicity on the internet has increased which i think is very speculative and difficult to prove. Personally that’s something that I don’t really believe has increased a ton since before covid in the first place. The internet has always been toxic and a safe haven for horrible people under anonymity

@@christiantretter4605 idk, but I feel like it's the same on Instagram. I actually felt safer on tiktok (had it last year) than I do on insta, where nearly all of the comments are full of n-word and people bringing up their transphobia and homophobia even under unrelated vids. Statistics about hate crimes have definitely risen in multiple countries during last few years (UK is a big example, especially because it had a big boom of transphobic articles), so I would say that internet aggression is a direct reflection of real life aggression that has been going on. I think the backlash that a lot of feminists have to the idea that "we are failing young men" is not that we think it isn't true, but that women are disproportionately expected to cater to men's emotions without reciprocity, at home, at work, in relationships, etc., and it is just so exhausting. As an afab person who is already expected to do a disproportionate amount of emotional and care labor at work, I just don't have the energy to also do the emotional research for disenfranchised men and boys. One of the things that I very much appreciate about this podcast, and about Jarvis's other content especially, is that the guys are using their position of privilege but also understanding to reach out to people in this demographic and help bring them forward with sensitivity and care. It's the work we all need to be doing around our own intersections of privilege so that the burden doesn't always fall to the people under attack to fix the problem.

Right. We need more men uplifting men and it’s nice when they stop expecting us to do so. I watched other men call a man a bum, and was telling a woman she should “date down”. And then here comes these other guys, mad at the woman. All for saying she wouldn’t, because she’s been abused before by poor men. She doesn’t believe any men are worth it, but feels that at least a well off man could not leave her more broke. So they get mad at her, but not mad at the men calling them bums. They save all their anger, for those they feel they can take it out on.
@lunaverse4977
@lunaverse4977 Жыл бұрын
Yeah!!! The problem is that "the world is hard for men so women need to cater to their emotional needs" is literally already a big point of the patriarchy. It's how the classic capitalist model keeps men under their thumb, by promising that while their jobs may be soulless and exploitative they'll have a nice obdient wife at home to take care of their every need. All these systems are interlocked and work together. Just recognizing that men suffer under this system too isn't enough, we need a model to fix it better than "women just need to be nicer to men" we tried that already, didn't work.

We (men) are failing young men and non-men by setting that expectation.
@jessearmstrong-kooy2930
@jessearmstrong-kooy2930 Жыл бұрын
Absolutely. But it shouldn’t just be men who have to support other men, just like it shouldn’t just be women who support other women. We as a society need to support the struggling groups, which means collectively & individually. I understand that women are always expected to do emotional labour to support men & that it is just not ok. This doesn’t mean a woman should never do any emotional labour to help someone who’s struggling, rather that it’s done as a decision & not an expectation. If we get to a point where NO women do emotional labour to support young boys, that will make them hate women even more because it wasn’t women who came to their aid when they needed it. By helping boys when they are in need, we all set better examples of what women & men are genuinely like, and this effectively helps prevent the formation of negative gender stereotypes in their minds.

As a teenage guy myself, I think that this type of dialogue is super important. In my school and even with some of my friends I find that the idea that "nice guys finish last" is still being perpetuated. @lankenstein5884
@lankenstein5884 Жыл бұрын
I think that can be a really easy hole to fall in- even for some women. It's important to note the semantic, colloquial and psychological differences between "good men" and "nice guys". "Nice guys" probably do, and should, finish last- because anyone who talks about how nice a guy they are is probably full of shit. There is definitely a "nice guy" trope; a guy who thinks being "nice" makes them instantly deserving of women's attention or that it's a type of sexual currency (open the door for her, tell her she's pretty and if she doesn't jump in bed with me it's because "women only like assholes"). It baffles me how they can convince themselves that it's "nice" to expect women to fawn over you because you *pretended* you practice basic human decency. A "good man" *is* a nice guy- genuinely. Actually kind and thoughtful. If a good man does something nice for a woman he does so because it's the right thing to do, he wants to make a good impression, he genuinely enjoys her company (regardless of sex). Being a good man doesn't guarantee that you get everything you want, but when you inevitably experience rejection you will be able to handle it gracefully. Not that you asked, but my advice would be to call your friends out on their BS. You can do it kindly, but maybe ask them why they think being nice entitles them to sex or having a girlfriend, or whatever, and whether or not they're really that nice if they're only doing things to try to "get ahead". I gotta say that I completely disagree with these guys on Jordan Peterson though. I think he's an excellent role model for young men who talks about a lot of the same things they do. I really don't get the disconnect.

TW: Suicide/Suicidal Thoughts I know they only briefly touched on this but I related so heavily when Jarvis was talking about how he wouldn't have to do his interview with Microsoft if the plane went down. I was suicidal for many years, and while not being suicidal anymore is a very very good thing, one thing that was really hard for me to deal with was not having an out for things that made me anxious. Because my go to thought for stressful situations was either, I wouldn't have to deal with this if I was dead, or, at least if this goes badly I can always just die, and there is a level of comfort to that. While I'm not suicidal anymore it was intially very hard to not have that safety net, so it is reassuring to know that other people have had even slightly similar experiences, regardless of the scale, severity, or context.

A man accused the entire country of preferring to eat Irish babies over establishing any kind of social welfare and people still haven’t got anything more fun to discuss about the country. Some of the most popular stories from England and Britain are about the British oppressing Scotland or some guy mansplaining things. Pink Floyd kicked off the modern counterculture movement by pointing out the fact that in spite of being very proud of fighting the Nazis, the UK was still an incredibly fascist and cruel country. I can agree with Jarvis that I was fed "nice guys finish last" stuff and could have gone down that road and didn't because I didn't hate women, just like Alanah said. I had trouble with women in high school, got a girlfriend, had to move across the country, dated someone, then could barely get a dad for 3 years before I found my current girlfriend. I had several female friends who I cared about and I had male friends telling me nice guys finish last. I even had my best friend (a woman) tell me I should read one of those pickup artist books because I was having such a hard time. I hated the book and the only thing I learned from it was to squeeze a girls hand you were talking to and if she squeezes back, shes actually into you. and it worked and I figured out thats how my current partner was definitely into me. I didn't hate women though. I saw a lot of girls I tried to date who said no to me date guys who ended up being total shit heads to them. I saw several of my friends who were girls get cheated on or left for another woman. And I struggled. I realized it was all bullshit though. I cared about those girls/women. I wouldn't want to use shitty tactics against them or I'd be just like those assholes. One final thing that finished it for me, before I met my current partner was my best guy friend had a crush on my best gal friend. He was the one who was telling me nice guys finish last. Well he tried to date her when she was vulnerable after a bad breakup and be there for her emotionally, after she felt better she said she did not want to date him but thanks for being there for her. He then became a douche and tried to guilt trip her and make her feel bad. After that our friend group met a pair of sisters and my guy friend had a crush on the older sister and I had a crush on the younger sister. My friend, the douche, told the older sister I wasn't a good guy and to watch out for me since I liked her younger sister. She told her sister that and the sister knowing me thought that was weird and told me. I never did anything to show that I treated women, or anyone in general poorly and him being one of my best friends should know that. I realized he was a backstabbing asshole and I stopped talking to him after I moved out of our place and turned my back on the whole "nice guys finish last" bullshit. it still sucked I was having a hard time with women, but I knew it wasn't the fault of women. I just had bad depression and anxiety and was awkward and that was my problem, not theirs.

And then they have the GALL to say that it's just "biology" or whatever. That is an insult to women and the larger science community as a whole.

I'm starting to feel like it's a collective propaganda effort, to bombard us with negativity and ensure that we have nowhere intellectually calm to talk about things. Even on this video, alot of the people being hateful and aggressive in the replies have profiles with no content, many of them created recently, and they rarely argue back if you make a coherent point, just saying something crappy to someone else. It reeks of a social-media organized disinformation campaign, where a few hundred/thousand people are making loads of sock accounts to make us mad, and to make it seem like "their side" is everywhere and more popular. But that's me putting on my tin-foil hat and rambling (sorry). The alternative is that there's actually a crap-load of absolutely frothing-mad boys and men that can't help but to metaphorically scream at anything they don't like, and that's even more terrifying.

The discussion about society failing young men is one that plagues my mind daily. One of my good friend’s boyfriend (cishet white man) constantly laments about how society throws people like him to the wayside but uplifts marginalized communities without thinking twice. Now, he was raised in a VERY toxic household in rural Pennsylvania (Appalachia), so those dynamics definitely shape the person he is and for sure he has less privilege than the dudes I went to high school with who had rich parents and went to Ivy leagues without thinking twice. It’s a weird balance between helping young men understand the dimensions of intersectionality and how those identities are perceived on the surface by society while also acknowledging that young men & boys need to still be emotionally fulfilled as people
@fluidthought42
@fluidthought42 Жыл бұрын
Thing is that society does disregard the wellbeing of men, but it's still a patriarchal society that's doing that to men. It's more productive to view the system of "privilege" as less of one where men are dominant, but rather one which uses flattery and promises of rewards to men in return for subservience to the system (which can involve demanding more control over women). As Fiq once out it, it's not men vs women, it's everybody vs the patriarchy. Because as much as the patriarchy paints itself as the natural right and ultimate fulfillment of men's desires, in reality it's the force that grooms men into having fears and insecurities that drive men into conforming into the social hierarchy. It's promises of power and fulfillment are just tools for planting the seed of insecurity within the hearts of men; as any good marketing strategist knows a good way to sell a product by creating or inventing a need for it.

Another banger episode! I think this might be the best discussion yet. Alanah was a great guest and I'm a fan now. And she's right, there is so much more blatant, open misogyny online now and it's not just festering in the internet dungeons of 4chan and the like. It's the knock-on effect of the mainstream prominence of redpill/manosphere figures like Tate and Pearl in a post-Trump "war on woke" cultural battleground. It's patriarchy driven to it's logical extreme by late capitalism concentrating wealth (and therefore true manhood) in the hands of less and less, while simultaneously dispossessing/disenfranchising the majority of men. Jarvis was spot on in his analysis that there's a material inequality driving this surging wave of misogynistic sentiment that creates insecurity, anger, and frustration-which are all valid-but the problem is the system of patriarchy itself not the women who unilaterally suffer under patriarchy even more than the men. Gender inequality is inseparable from economic inequality. The solution would have to involve not only the dismantling of patriarchy but also the destruction of the capitalist socioeconomic order, and replacing it with an system where the workers have fair say over the work they do and the collective value they generate (socialism, communism). Anything less is unsustainable, like what we're seeing play out right now. The contradictions are piling up to an existential, collective ego crisis. The only way out of the cycles of conflict is through compassion.

The part about misogyny being more prevalent was a tough watch. Jarvis was constantly refocussing the conversation and by default invaludating Alanah's feelings. Jarvis desperately needs to look inward to address his biases in these conversations. I see him time and time again identifying with the ''lonely men'' (I think in this one he even said something like ''I was like that'') and it SHOWS. "We are failing young men''? Are we als failing white people if white people choose to engage in racist content and choose to be more racist? No those men who are choosing to engage in misogynistic (and lets not kid ourselves, homophobic, ace-phobic and all kinds of other -phobics) content are failing themselves and are also endangering everyone around them because of their entitlement. The situation for women is ABISMAL, women dont have the rights to their own bodies, they are left to die for populistic policies, SAed and killed and there is a bunch of other rights that are on the line. But yeah, we are definitely ''failing young men''.

The driving rant is so relatable 😭 there’s something about driving that brings out the most selfish, dangerous, inconsideratness of some people and “debating” the types that drive that way is equally as infuriating

I saw the engagement reel Alanah mentions and I remember seeing her comment and feeling such relief that someone was showcasing that women are not some awful monolith. It might seem silly to some but thanks, Alanah. That comment section was rough

There's two ways for a gym rat to go... gym rat to misogynist pipeline or the gym rat to leftist pipeline

My anxiety and depression are really intertwined so it's really interesting to hear someone talk about having depression but not being anxious at all. Like... I genuinely can't fathom what that would be like.
