Unfortunately maintaining your own pool depends heavily on watching the weather and responding to certain conditions. It can be time consuming and inconvenient but the weather can’t be ignored. Wind introduces organic debris and pollen, rain dilutes and brings in fertilizer, heat promotes evaporation requiring water additions, high UV destroys chlorine. Once you have an effective method to address these changes it’s just a matter of checking a good weather app and staying on top of the conditions

Just happened to me and my chemicals are ALL in check with fc 3ppm, 5ppm total (2ppm combined from sustain shield). PH 7.4, ALK 100, Cy 30, Hard 220. Added CB7 algaecaide as preventative about a week ago. We don't have a cover and we've got trees so it's a constant challenge early in the season to keep organics out. Cicadas also a nuisance as well. Had a little development of green in the corner of the deep end which I was in the middle of vacuuming. I thought it was dead stuff from the algae killer. Power went out, came back on, and everything I vacuumed went back into the pool. I'm using the sustain system, which is overpriced but usually does well.

I struggled with the same problem but now zero algae for years with this approach: Get your CYA up to 50ppm. Add borates to 50ppm. Test and treat for phosphates. Get your phosphate level down to zero and keep it there with a 1 oz PhosFree every 1-2 weeks. Even if my chlorine zeros out for a week the pool stays clear.

2.41 free chlorine w 2.54 total. My cyanuric acid was at 88 which is high. So we drain the pool halfway and refilled it. But it happened again. We have the frog system.

I belieive a high amount of phosphates can cause the water to repeateadly turn green. When algae is killed, phosphate is the byproduct, which causes more algae to grow. So in my opinion, after the applied shock kills the algae, add phosphate remover to keep the algae from coming back.

The source of the phosphates aren’t dead algae but rather a component of decaying organic matter, pollen, skin care products, laundry detergent, etc. Phosphate is literally a component of commercial fertilizer and this promotes plant growth such as algae. Algae actually consumes phosphorus so it’s net effect is to reduce and not increase phosphate levels. Most pros recommend levels below 500ppb but problem pools are better off staying near zero. Easy fix by testing, training and then weekly preventive micro dose of remover

Great info I didnt know about the Cyanuric acid levels. My pool is crystal clear and has always been for years. Every once in a while I may get a haze but I clear it up in a day with chlorine and filter. Knowing this I'll keep a closer eye on that level. Then being in Upstate NY we drain some in winter and refill in spring so this may just keep the level good for us here.

I am just north of you and it is mostly the same here in that the partial draining and refilling for winterizing helps to keep CYA under control in most pools here.

In regards to CYA levels - if you don’t test then you don’t know. But given your pool is staying clear I suspect those early water changes are keeping CYA in check. It’s easy enough to check CYA every couple of months during season to avoid the occasional algae bloom

Constant battle I have with my pool in Florida after every storm. The rain ends up causing organic tree crap like pollen and leaves to fall into my pool water promoting algae growth. I then end up having to shock the living crap out of the pool to get the water crystal clear again.

Add borates. That way you have a second buffer and an algae static agent when your chlorine zeros out It’s also likely that the rain is washing fertilizer into the pool. Even trace amounts of fertilizer is high in phosphate that causes algae to multiply rapidly. Test and treat for phosphates. Then micro doses phosphate remover weekly and your levels will always stay at zero

Hi, good video, thanks. I boost the Cl every time rain is due but I always find the pH rockets with rain. Other than reducing the pH in advance is there anything I can do to buffer the pH against the rain's effects?

Alkalinity resists upwards movement of pH and the higher you push alk the stronger the buffering effect. So could be your alk is not high enough. Another solution is to adjust everything to balance, and then explore using borates at 30 to 50ppm which also helps to lock in the pH values against movement.

Alkalinity (baking soda) then pH (muriatic acid vs soda ash) then calcium hardness (calcium chloride) then stabilizer (cyanuric acid) and lastly chlorine. Then you need to test and adjust about twice a week for the rest of your life! Welcome to pool ownership
