In recent years, Saudi Arabia has not ceased to announce investments that are as ambitious as they are crazy. Of all of them, the most outrageous is the city of NEOM: a project to create a city-state 33 times larger than New York. This city would be located in the middle of the desert, in an area that is currently populated by a nomadic tribe.
All these projects are the vision of Mohammed Bin Salman, the absolute leader of Saudi Arabia. They are his strategy for diversifying his country's economy. The idea is that these mega-cities will attract billions of dollars of foreign investment and become true economic capitals in the style of Dubai or Singapore.
However, to be able to carry out all these projects, Bin Salman needs foreign investment... and that is not easy. Will all these Saudi mega cities really be built? Will we really see things like a Jurassic Park or an artificial moon in the middle of the desert? In this VisualPolitik video we answer these questions.

I'm not an economist but it seems like spending billions upon billions on projects that could easily be a gamble may not be the best solution. If it were me, I would visit countries like Germany and New Zealand that have strong and stable economies and see what more stable options are do-able in Saudi Arabia. It just seems like these ideas are a big gamble.

There are so many inaccuracies in this video. One example is the map you brought up is completely wrong. You can easily google Jeddah and find that it’s not in the south. Another thing is that not all of your stock photos are from Saudi Arabia (i know for sure that one of them is from Qatar). And nobody in Saudi Arabia was forced to buy stocks in aramco. There are more inaccuracies.

The Saudis is paying contractors to build this dream with very low pay Slave labor from Asia, so all money the worker makes will be sent out of the country and they will pay little tax money, this will cause a decrease in the country GDP when all the contractors and workers leave with their money to go back to their country, Bin Salman, He can modernize the country all he want's but no one will want to live there due to the barbarian laws, no matter how pretty it looks.

Alright man Im a Saudi and I listened patiently until 22:01 that is the breaking point. I have an obligation to clarify and correct a lot of lies you told. Like, not all who got locked up in the Ritz Carlton had been charged with corruption, in fact, many have been cleared and returned to their jobs. The guy who got killed because he did not give up his land is true, however, he resisted with a gun and had a shootout with the police he even recorded it and it is clear that he has allegiance to ISIS, look up his recording. The guy had no time for courts. There is a lot you said Im not going to talk about. But, what really struck me is how you said that the government AKA MBS forced citizens to buy shares in ARAMCO like holly molly this is a first to me, alright lets say we were forced how would they do it? Knock on doors? Steal it from bank accounts? Get out of jail free card? Like what is the process man you should have elaborated so we can all laugh and thought of it as a joke. You want a joke? your sources are a joke.

I'm not sure that Saudia Arabia has the cultural and political institutions necessary to attract the global audience to pull this off. Why would a foreign technology firm want to setup shop in Neom for logistical reasons when there's pleanty of countries a hop skip and jump through the suez canal that would be less messy and troublesome to do buisness with? Dubai isn't really an economy i would want to emulate unless i had to. Retail and tourism are the first to go in a downturn and extremely vulnerable to online retail and whatevers trending with travel oriented influencers on social media.

VisualPolitik got one thing wrong in this video. Pandemic is very fortunate event for Saudis. They tried to trash oil price for some time with the purpose of eliminating competition - mostly shale oil producers (who have much higher costs than Saudis) and striking decisive blow to Iran which is biggest enemy of Saudi Arabia. They have massive financial reserves and will survive covid in much better condition than any other producer.

@ 2:56 - Not Saudi Arabia @ 4:50 - Not Saudi Arabia Since this is supposed to be a video with a visual focus, it would be nice to actually get footage from Saudi Arabia. As a Saudi VisialPolitik fan, I do find it annoying that videos about Saudi Arabia have 0 positivity. I've lived here all my life and I've also travelled all around the world. The positive changes I'm seeing are enormous. Here are a couple that weren't highlighted in your videos: - Riyadh, the capital, is most probably hosting the Asian games in 2030 - Jeddah (2nd largest in population) is hosting Formula 1 starting 2021 with a Red Sea coastal street track for 15 years - Formula E hosted in Riyadh for 10 years since 2019 - Weekly transparent public reporting on corruption cases in public and private sector - A public security mobile application developed with options to report all kinds of cases, including harassment - Fiber optics internet is covered in more than 60% of urban cities in 2020. With speeds up to 500 Mbs (not to get confused with MbS). - 5G has been introduced way before most western countries and it currently covers relatively large metro areas. - Family owned housing rate has increased from 47% in 2019 to 60% (target was 52%) in 2020, despite COVID. - Tourist Visas can now be issued in less than 15 minutes for citizens of 50+ countries. I'm gonna stop there while I can keep on going. I'm not quoting an article here, I'm living it. With all the mistakes the government has done, the country has improved in almost all private & govt. sectors since MbS came into power as a crown prince. I'd be more than happy to give content for your next video about Saudi. And also help with your pronunciation.

@amirfarjad
@amirfarjad 3 жыл бұрын
Guys, I'm surprised that you find my comment this controversial, but the truth is that's not how you attract investments. exuberant projects usually attract tourists but this does not necessarily mean that investors are attracted to it. Investors are (Usually) quite smart and are looking for sure things rather than bets. in this case, you are investing in a region with a lot of problem beginning from the nomads that have their land was stolen from them which could easily turn violent, Bin Salman doesn't have the support of other princes and there could be a coup to replace him and that is very likely these days. Aramco has been attacked by the Houthis multiple times and also as they are on dangerous grounds with Iran they could be targeted directly by them. Since human rights are not respected and the people are suppressed there could be a revolution and these are just the tip of the Ice Berg. One external example is since Saudi Arabia is an ally of the US they might be overpowered by the Russians or more likely China and therefore the investments are all at risk. All of this will make a country like that unsafe to invest in and my point is in order to attract investors they cant follow the same path as UAE because they have way more to deal with than a small country like UAE. As for the question about why shouldn't they do big projects to attract investors. Well, I'm qualified to answer this as an Urban Planner. Cities are Complex and planning for them is a tough task. The classic model of city planning suggests that you should provide the infrastructure first to allow the city to take place and that is the first and the most expensive part of the project. Saudi Arabia is doing the same thing as you saw in the video, But new articles suggest that planned cities rarely reach their true potential and fill their population capacity and they take more than 40 years to even begin to be profitable so it is quite clear that their investment will not be returned to them in the short run but it is possible to be able to earn a profit if you plan it right. In most cases, new cities are very much dependent on the megacities around them for amenities and the job market. So if you're are going to live in a project like this then you must be wealthy to have enough money to support you. Now with this in your mind imagine the Target society that is going to live here, the wealthy, now tell me if you're a wealthy man wouldn't you prefer to live somewhere in a mansion with amazing weather and natural beauty away from all the worries in the world? Sorry for blabbering on by the way :-)

Thank you your video but there are so many misleading information in your video. - You said revenue from oil exports is 90% but I beg you pardon it accounts for 70% and accounts for 42% of the country's GDP. source: www.opec.org/opec_web/en/about_us/169.htm - You said unemployment rate is more than 15% but in matter of fact it is around 6%. Now it may have gone up a bit like any other country during the COVID19 pandemic. source: www.statista.com/statistics/262524/unemployment-rate-in-saudi-arabia/ - You said only 20% of Saudi youth population have "Technical degrees" and the rest have degrees like theology and Arabic studies. Well, let me refer you the world education news article about education in Saudi Arabia to how much the country invested in education. There are more than 80000 students with scholarships studying abroad and I don't think they are getting degrees in Arabic studies in US, UK and Canada. wenr.wes.org/2020/04/education-in-saudi-arabia - The 2017 campaign was anti-corruption campaign against people who benefited jobs and contracts with the government. This is an ongoing campaign that started from top of the pyramid going downward. This is an article about the most recent arrests on corrupt people. english.alarabiya.net/en/News/gulf/2020/11/27/Vision-2030-Saudi-Arabia-arrests-226-people-involved-in-158-criminal-corruption-cases- - Al huwaitat tribe people were compensated with money and land of their choice. english.aawsat.com/home/article/2348411/saudi-arabia-grants-free-plots-land-people-compensated-neom-project Also Mr. Al Huwaiti who passed away may he rest in peace fired his gun at law enforcement agents and we know what that means. By the way, there are so many brilliant doctors, engineers, scientist, researchers who leads the nation top centers and universities. Saudis are highly educated people with deep connections to their roots. Please when you present facts, present all of them and don't cherry pick'em. The video is insulting not only to simple citizens like me but to your viewers as you are telling them lots of misleading information.

I'm struck by how simplistic most of the comments are (I don't give a shit what your teeth look like). Saudi Arabia is building what will become fantastic ruins, and they created the basis for this back in the 20th century when they did not use their oil to create industrial infrastructure. No metal smelting or other basic industries. They could have undercut the rest of the world by providing these industries virtually free energy and using the funds saved to bring in experts to show their people how to run and manage these assets. Now, we are in the early 21st and they are trying to build modern cities with no underlying industrial infrastructure anywhere in the country. Once the oil either runs out, or is no longer required by those countries with industrial infrastructure they'll be left in the middle of the desert with no resources of any use to them or of interest to Outsiders. Furthermore who wants to visit, let alone invest, in a place ruled by fundamentalist Dictators who have no compunction about killing anyone who vaguely irritates them. These projects are doomed to become spectacular ruins in the desert.
