In the case of iron deficiency anemia, the blood is unable to transport sufficient oxygen, and muscles cannot store enough oxygen. Therefore, even if our bodies have plenty of fat and sugar, without enough oxygen to burn, we cannot produce sufficient energy. Our cells and organs cannot function normally. This leads to the most common symptoms of iron deficiency: fatigue and weakness.
The brain also requires oxygen and energy. This results in the brain receiving less oxygen and energy than needed. Thus, this is the indirect impact of iron on the brain, and also the most fundamental impact.
Moreover, besides determining the brain's oxygen and energy supply, iron also protects the brain in many other ways.
